Language teacher Yvonne van Deursen-Bakx regularly gives updates on Dutch habits and at the same time gives a mini-lesson in learning the Dutch language. Early summer you may see Dutch flags with school bags. On Radio 4 Brainport, she explains.

Learning the local language also means being emersed in Dutch culture and in Dutch habits. Una Paloma Blanca had a grand opening of their new facilities at the NRE Area on May 11, 2023. Antonio Gutiérrez Rubio explains how for instance Dutch course uses real examples of experiencing the Netherlands, including learning how to ride the bike and the need to protect your bike from it getting stolen. But UPB teaches many languages, we may even call it a language hub.

Eindhoven is a hotspot for innovation and TU Eindhoven plays a key role in starting innovation. May 11th is the day that rector Prof Frank Baaijens hands over the helm to Silvia Lenaerts. In fact, Stijn Steenbakers had the honor to decorate Frank Baaijens on behalf of the Dutch King. Alderman Stijn Steenbakkers (CDA) reflects on the role of the outgoing rector for the university and for the region.

We recorded the interview at the official opening of the Una Paloma Blanca language hub. Connecting people, facilitating a social life are also key elements to maintain an innovative region, as the Alderman explains. We took the opportunity to discuss the challenges of being an international city at the forefront of innovation, with all the dynamics of the large and small enterprises and the scale jump ambitions of the university.

Running up to the 2023 elections for the water authority "Waterschap de Dommel", Henk Schepers explains the challenges of managing water in the Eindhoven Brainport region. Making sure that nature, farming and the population have enough water even in a dry summer cannot just be solved by just filling a big reservoir. The soil needs to contain enough water continuously to avoid irreversible changes and to ensure that it can still suck up water in wetter periods afterwards. The “battery model”, just cycle charge- discharge is a dangerous misperception that can heavily impact nature and farmland if we would use that as the operational model for managing water.

In a Radio 4 Brainport interview with Jean-Paul Linnartz, Henk Schepers also mentions that in a country full of water experts, still the Brainport region can contribute much more to sustainable water management by offering technical solutions to clean medication residues from sewage water.

Besides pollution by inhabitants, farming, or economic activities, the many criminal drug factory are a very costly factor in keeping our water safe. In Brabant these are a big issue. Illegal dumps in nature pose a huge cost to society.

March 15, 2023 is the day of the elections for the water authority. Mado Ruijs pitches the position of Water Natuurlijk, Lijst 1 in the Eindhoven region.

Mado Ruijs is a member of the executive board of Waterschap de Dommel. Running up to the elections for the Waterschappen on March 15th, 2023, we dive into the dilemma's of avoiding flooding during intense rain, or to maintain adequate ground water levels during draughts. While the Dutch already installed water boards in the 13th century as the first governmental body, its role is dramatically changes. Climate change means more rain in shorter periods but also longer periods without precipitation. But how about the quality of our surface water? While in the past, industries contaminated water with cadmium and zinc, the Dommel is far cleaner than 20 years ago. But the new challenges are also to get rid of medication that ends up in our sewage water.

While Mado also pitches her position as the leader of Lijst 1 WaterNatuurlijk for the water board, she particularly invites internationals to also engage in the dilemmas and challenges of water. Meanwhile ecologist Nuno Curado of Wild Eindhoven explains the essential role that water has on wild life and on a the natural habitats in the Eindhoven region.

You may remember that we at Radio 4 Brainport asked you before Christmas to send in your holiday wishes, and as an incentive we promised to give away a DAB radio to one of the contributors. Today, we went to Sweet Dreams bakery to hand over the receiver to Aralys and Amar. Nothing better than a dive into the sea on New Year's Day? Ralu Nistor-Lustermans tried it our for herself. To Jean-Paul Linnartz of Radio 4 Brainport she disclosed that it really gives fresh energy for the whole year. Cool!

When Jeroen Dijsselbloem became the new mayor of Eindhoven in Sept 2022, the city had become far more vibrant then when he left at the age of 19. Eindhoven had benefitted for many decades by bringing in new people. Anne Yianni interviewed Mayor Dijsselbloem for Howdo Magazine, after being in office for a couple of months. Radio 4 Brainport chatted with Anne about how she expereienced the interview and what were her take-aways. Build, Build, Build is a priority to craete 70,00 houses for the talent that the High Tech companies want to attract in the coming decade.  

Heleen de Coninck is frequently seen on stage to pitch her drive and her hope to contain climate change. As a co-author on IPCC climate reports,  as professor of Technology, Innovation & Society at Eindhoven University of Technology and associate professor at Radboud University in Nijmegen, she feels the urgency to increase knowledge about environmental issues, but at the same time she is hopeful that we can revert the course towards catastrophic changes.

At the Park Theater,  in her "Moon speech", she pitched that we should change global systems in order to tackle the major environmental problems, thus apply major changes to industry, transport and mobility, but also the food system.

Is the weather reaching tipping points in warming the planet, from where irreversible changes with set on and accelerate further warming? She sees social tipping points from the population really starts to think and behave differently, and collectively strive for new values.

Timeless Tales in Translation is Chaitali’s third work in translation. It is a collection of 12 notable Indian short stories written my famous, award winning, Indian authors. The stories bring out a meticulous picture of India in the colonial times. These contain some of the most groundbreaking, progressive, and thought-provoking writing in Indian Literature from 1855 to 1955, considered as an important period in the literary history of the subcontinent.

Chaitali writes and translates fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. A reviewer and journalist, her first collection of prose poems Cross Stitched Words received the Honorable Mention award at the New England Book Festival 2021.  Her books are there in our Eindhoven Library, and also catalogued in the US libraries.

Starting a PhD in February 2022 meant for our radio guest Lev Azarkh that he got out of Ukraine just before the Russian troop approached in on his home town Kyiv. Now that winter is kicking in and Putin's forces relentlessly bomb the citiy infrastructures, we chat with him about December in Eindhoven and back home. What does Christmas mean for him, how is celebrated in his home country?     

As a physiotherapist at Praktijk Welschap in Meerhoven-Eindhoven, Anke Eliëns saw more people coming to her practice for help in COVID times. Apparently working from home is not always best for your posture and your fitness. A massage or even medication may not cure the problem in the long run, creating awareness and changing personal habits and behavior are key to a full recovery.    

But Anke is also interested to learn more about internationals. More and more people of Indian descent visit our physiotherapist praktijk Welschap. To provide the best possible treatment for people of Indian descent visiting a Dutch physiotherapy practice, she likes to perform a study. Studying for a Masters degree in Manual therapy at the Hogeschool Arnhem en Nijmegen (HAN), she wants to identify the expectations about physiotherapy by people of Indian descent.

Particulate matter (fijnstof) is a key factor that deteriorates the air quality and in Eindhoven air quality can be improved. Transportation, large industries emit PM. Also agriculture contributes, as Brabant breeds more pigs than it has human inhabitants. Yet, citizens cannot only fingerpoint to companies, to farmers, to logistics. Meanwhile the energy crisis is not helping to reduce emissions from houses. Some households start to burn wood rather than to use gas for heating. So in fact, these are forces in opposite direction than towards green heating via renewable energy. Jean Paul Close promotes a transistion towards a sustainocracy. Clean air os part of that ambition.

Talking about classical music, you may think of it as an icon of Western European culture dominated by white male composers. For a long time, Chi-chi Nwanoka found herself as the only black player in the orchestra. But in her journey of promoting diversity and inclusion, she also found out that there are great classical composers of color or that Dvorak had listened to native Americans and to the music of slaves in the Southern states. Can we even say that classical music sounds more authentic with black musicians?   

In 2015, double-bass player Chi-chi Nwanoku founded Chineke! Orchestra supporting young mucians. The orchestra made its debut in the Royal Albert Hall during the BBC Proms in 2017 and has been successful eversince in the large venues thoughout England and beyond, including the Rotterdam Doelen and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Before their performance in Eindhoven in November 2022, Jean-Paul Linnartz interviewed her for Radio 4 Brainport.

A light system that always controls the light such that it takes away your desire to interact is not the best lighting system. Good interaction paradigms do search for active participation and engage you.  Jean-Paul Linnartz explores what makes an interactive lighting system work well. Prof Berry Eggen of Eindhoven University of Technology is our guest. "User preferences do not exist", at least not in the way that some researchers believed that there were stable, invariant preferred light settings.  

 Trying to understand the human by AI is giving a new dimension to interaction concepts but still the interaction by itself with key. The lights may ask you a question or explore new settings that you have never thought of yourself.

During the renowned Dutch Design Week 2022, they hosted a series of events based on the subject of designing for all.

Unfortunately the daily news nowadays consists of war reports in Europe. Is peace possible? Peace, the European promise? Students from Hogeschool Zuyd think "yes" and organize an event on November 9 called Peace and Europe. An event where we from different Europeans cultures share our common values and show eachother our complementary differences. 

These differences are expressed by you, as a participant by bringing food from your country to the Park Theater in Eindhoven and share it with the international participants. Radio4Brainport talked with two organizing students, Pauline Doyonard and Johan vd Ploeg, about this event in the Park Theater. Good for children too.

The European Union plays an important role and impacts the Brainport region. It influences our work and how we learn and what we can do with our earned degrees within the EU. On a regional level, we talk a lot about the main problem in Brainport, that we need more engineers and high-tech specialists.

More education to get more engineers working, so to say. The conference Learning and Working on November 15 in the Park Theater in Eindhoven will dive into this. Peter Simons, Radio4Brainport, interviewed Jacques Giesbertz (Europe Direct) the organizer of this event. He gives some insight what you can expect.

At Eindhoven University of Technology, Student Diversity Officer Lara Hofstra emphasizes that the diversity week is for all students and for all staff. Feeling at home starts with allowing yourself to be authentic. Early in the academic year, the diversity week is full of events. But most importantly, it is about creating a culture of trust in which listening respectfully is key.       

Walking from Eindhoven to India, it will be quite an adventure but Christian de Heij  is not so worried about the outer journey. It is all about the inner journey. Learning about himself.

What made Eindhoven a hotspot for Design? We may go back to Louis Kalff, but in the 90s, design of electronic systems underwent a revolution. Thanks to multiple initiatives, and thanks to the Brainport culture to work together, forces were joined to create a strong eco system that is world famous. It is not only renowned for its events and innovative ideas, but the (often patented) concepts found their way into may products, internationally.  

And from the past, we fast forward to the future. Wat does AI mean for human interaction with technology? TU Eindhoven Professor Berry Eggen takes us on a journey through the creation of a design ecosystem and wjhat is now famous as Dutch Design Week.

For many internationals, the Netherlans is all about wndmills, clogs and .... flowers. But in Valkenswaard, just south of Eindhoven you can experience what it means to see more than 2 million flowers in one big parade. Radio 4 Brainport interviewed Robin Wijnen of the organisation of Bloemencorso Valkenswaard.  

In Valkenswaard, the tradition of a flower parade stems stems from the liberation on September 17, 1944. After years of parades with decorated bicycles and wagons, the first flower parade moved through the streets of Valkenswaard on 17 September 1953. In those early years the cars were still 'uniform and almost symmetrical in construction'. Today, Bloemencorso Valkenswaard is an exciting spectacle of dahlias, technology, drama and music. The organisation calls it even a moving open-air theatre.

Over the years, the wagons became larger and more complex. In 1963, more than 150,000 dahlias were processed throughout the parade. With the same number of flowers on one car, we now speak of a small car: the total procession today counts almost 3 million flowers. Valkenswaard also explores the new construction technology and adds moving parts, plus theater and (live) music.

The meaning of freedom is different for every human being. Freedom creates and embraces diversity. To celebrate India's Independence Day, we spoke to the youth of today and young children about freedom. Let's listen to Kiara, Nevaan,  Anushka and Divya about their take on Freedom.

In July 2022, cyclist Jonas Vingegaard won the Tour de France. It was a team success of Jumbo-Visma, building upon insights from Professor Bert Blocken, the team’s permanent advisor on aerodynamics since 2017. All main riders in the team have been in the wind tunnel with him to optimize their aerodynamics with the goal of gaining time.

Communication via Light, Li-Fi, can resolve the congestion of the radio spectrum. The EU Horizon 2020 project ELIoT works towards widespread deployment in the market. Standards are an important prerequisite for such mass deployment. As Light Communications can serve a wide variety of applications, a single standard is not sufficient to allow for high-performance cost-optimized solutions for all cases.

Current light communication standards already fulfill many of the requirements covered through the 5th generation mobile communication system (5G).  It can be leveraged with current 3GPP specifications to provide 5G services over light communication. However, further standardization is required to fully leverage the capabilities of light communications for use cases and requirements that are currently outside of the possibilities of wireless interfaces.

Our guest is Kris De Prins, managing director of Holland Expat Center South, short ‘the expat center’. Kris, together with his colleagues, runs the one stop shop for internationals coming to the region: they help the internationals with their formalities (municipal registration and residence permit), inform them on topics such as taxes, housing, healthcare, and they help them integrate in our society. 

The expat center helps approx. 600-700 internationals (working at 70-80 different employers) each month with their formalities and it organizes several events (webinars, workshops) the year around for internationals but also their employers. A year of the Tiger is approaching. Every year we ask our Chinese internationals how they celebrate the spring festival.  How do you celebrate the Chinese New Year in Eindhoven? How do you make your dumplings? Are you also wearing something red?

After our first-in-the-Netherlands media report on the risks that COVID seems to spread via aerosols, Radio 4 Brainport had another chance to speak to Prof. Bert Blocken. Time for an update.

Two years after our interview in March 2020, we know much more about how COVID spreads, but it has taken far too long before virologists and even the WHO took aerosols seriously. By now, the aerosol route is generally accepted as a serious risk. We now know that viruses cannot hop from one aerosol to another, but can travel far via directly exhaled aerosols when people cough, sneeze or just sing. There remains discussion about whether delayed infections can occur via air conditioning ducts that keep circulating the same air for prolonged periods. But it is clear that properly controlled air flow and air cleaning can avoid many infections that would occur in poorly ventilated rooms.

Scientific research addressed two stages: the airflow engineering research on the reduction of the risk of circulating infected aerosols and the medical virologists research question of to what extent small amounts of aerosols can still infect people.

Bert Blocken was heavily disappointed by how media, politicians but even scientists from other disciplinesmisinterpreted properly conducted engineering research. In particular, the engineering community has developed theories that are later used as common knowledge and common sense. One would not have to hypothesis-test the fundamental laws of physics. Nonetheless, there seems a lot of unjustified criticism to properly conducted research work. More seriously, he missed the acknowledgements from decision makers and even from scientists that certain things were not known at an early stage of the pandemic. It took the World Health Organization 16 monthsto take the aerosol risks seriously.

Reducing the risk of infection heavily depends on ventilation. A wide-spread misperception is that the best ventilation is natural ventilation. Well-designed buildings have mechanical ventilation that can effectively reduce infection risks. Indeed, controlled airflows are the most efficient, and are a proven technology in residential and other buildings worldwide. In addition, air cleaning is a proven technology as well, used in professional environments such as surgery rooms and clean rooms. In addition, UV disinfection can wipe out viruses in upper air areas in the room. In the interview with Radio 4 Brainport, Prof Blocken dives into details of how these systems can reduce viral load. In fact, at a series of schools in Belgium and the Netherlands, air cleaners are being installed in a new project.

But not all air cleaners are effective. Bert Blocken does not see it as a professor’s role to recommend specific products, but he sees an urgent need for the public to know what systems are effective and which are poorly performing. He recommends and urges governments and the EU to swiftly come with certification of aircleaning products.

For the generation of children, years of education and social contact have been affected by corona at critical periods in their development. Let's talk about lingering effects of unfinished learning, parents facing dilemmas to risk Covid infections or risk normal childhood. International families are in a different position than native Dutch families when it comes to facilitating the development of their children. While the region maintained a strong economy, COVID does affect the interactions that are so typical of our Brainport eco-system and may affect sourcing international talent. Paradigm shifts come along maybe once in a generation. The COVID-19 pandemic has created multiple paradigms shifts the likes of which have never before seen. How will we, the region, and us individually come out of it?

Joining us is a panel of honorable guests: Alderman Stijn Steenbakkers, Councilor Miriam Frosi, and Education Director Geert Simons who professionally see the impact. Yet, Radio 4 Brainport, also invites parents and students, Beena E Arunraj, Karishma Vij, and Anushka. As an interim director of Eindhoven News, Beena hears the voice of many internationals.

Mental wellness is often taken for granted and neglected, especially when you live in such a high-tech region. Meanwhile, the seriousness of it should not be underestimated. The source of stress and depression can come from anywhere, including your work, family and environment.

Coming from her own experience, Irene Anggreeni once worked in a high-pressure profession and suffered from depression. She survived and would like to help others with her experience and expertise. She is now a certified dance therapist and mental wellness coach and founder at Expat Wellbeing.

Lotte’s podcasts are daily on-air at 7:30 PM, but today she gives a live update on visitor reactions. Elke reflects on the track record of light installations from ILI and on the enthusiastic participation of many students.

A light beams that comes to meet you and then invites you to dance. To some extent it is an extension of Philips Ross' Gibson installation on the Stadhuisplein, but this time, Team Ignite goes much further. The light beam is really interactive and predictive it anticipates your moves and at the same time leads you into a dance. Is it the rotation of the light? Is it the light-footed motion of the swirling beam?

What intrigued our reporter Jean-Paul Linnartz most is that there is in fact a fundamental mathematical concept behind it, one that is notoriously hard to explain to students. It is known as a Kalman filter. Boring or hard to grasp in math classes, but at GLOW it is taken a little “out of control” with a setting that are suddenly is inviting to dance.

Growth: It starts with chaos. When get closer you see structure building up. In fact, the installation interactively responds to what visistors do and grows its patterns. We interviewed Thijs de Koning of Hypar Collective during their try-out at the TU/e campus.

Pre-Corona GLOW attracted 750,000 visitors. Philips Ross is one of the leading designers of installations. Particularly, of installations that are interactive and that engage visitors. Jean-Paul Linnartz of Radio 4 Brainport had the opportunity to look forward to the 2021 edition.      

Henk Kuiten recollects the stories of his father Marinus Kuiten (1923) who was detained in the Scheveningen gevangenis during World War II, and escaped from forced labor in Germany. Shortly after the liberation of Eindhoven, he joined the Brits in Operation Market Garden and ended up in the battles of the Ardennes Offensive. What shaped him personally, what made him decide to take the risks of escaping from forced labor, to wander through occupied territory, to hide in Eindhoven, and to join the fighting army voluntarily?

What ever happened after Inmotion showed just a mock-up at DDW? Well, they revealed ""the real thing"" in August 2021:  a prototype of their all electrical racing car. Developing technology for very fast electric charging is their dream, besides winning a Le Mans 24 hours race. We interview one of the students on the team. What does it take to be an international student here? Our guest is TU Eindhoven Bachelor student Arda Karuca.

Even a crowded city like Eindhoven is full of wild life. Nuno Curado has been working with wildlife and people, in different organizations and in hos own businesses. Radio 4 Brainport broadcast a highlight on the relationship and long history between the Dutch and the Indonesians! The INYS (Indonesia Nederland Youth Society) strives to connect the two (young) groups, whether it be professionals or students, not only in Eindhoven but in all of the Netherlands.

Pawan Dhawan, an electrical engineer by background, worked for 27 years in Philips and retired as Senior Director of Procurement at Philips Nederland. He was the founding director of the "Kala Bharti" foundation and is passionate about social work, especially education for all.

How do they feel after going back to their own country? Was it an easy decision?

Holi is New Year’s Celebration according to the Hindu Calendar. This festival marks the end of winter and beginning of spring. Before we introduce you to our tonight’s guests , we would like to tell you all the significance of the celebration. Holi is New Year’s Celebration according to the Hindu Calendar. It is especially important for the farmers. In India it is around this time of the year , farmers celebrate their good harvest.

Holi celebrations begin the night before, when bonfires are lit to cleanse the air of evil spirits , and to celebrate to the death of the evil demon "Holika" after whom the festival is named. Last but not the least this festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil, of light over darkness, and of knowledge over ignorance.

Internationals enjoy making music together, already for many years. In COVID times that may not be easy but nonetheless we see an active organisation that brings together internationals: Music with Strangers.

With The Sound of Eindhoven, "This is Eindhoven" challenges musicians and producers to create an anthem or soundtrack as an ode to the city. On Radio 4 Brainport, we contacted internationals who you live here and have a strong connection with the city and who joined the competition. Enrique Cruz created an Eindhoven Anthem, that is a tribute to the city that appreciates in so many aspects. Alex Furnica and Mohsen Mehrafrouz have chosen "The City of Light" as a title, to reflect the multi-cultural society, the many nationalities.

On April 2, we celebrate the World Autism Awareness Day. But there are many spectrums of autism. While Brainport Eindhoven is the smartest city, with the largest number of patents per inhabitant, it is also a city with relatively many people that are "on the spectrum". That seems more that sheer coincidence: There may well be a correlation between prevalence of autism and "systemizers: who have an urge to understand how systems work. And that thrives well in cities with many centers of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)?

On April 27, 2021, we had three wonderful guests to help us guide through the colorful and bright side of autism. First, Dr. Barry Prizant, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, who received widespread recognition and many honors in his career. He is an invited speaker at the UN for World Autism Awareness Day back in 2013. Our second guest, Teddy Lytle, an Associate Artistic Director of Spectrum Theatre Company, a Neurodiverse Theatre Company in US. Our third guest is a very enthusiastic mum Tally Nothey from London, who calls herself as Accidental Hero and is working on a lot of Autism Awareness activities in UK.

A highlight will be the automobile parade, ranging from historic DAF cars to the record winning Stella to the innovative solar-powered Lightyear. King Willem Alexander himself will drive a reworked Daffodil designed by Michelotti and with 750 cc air-cooled engine with Variomatic CVT transmission. A car that was in the possession of the Royal Family for a long time and used in Italy, but is now with the DAF Museum.  

With longer daylight, we look forward to a warmer and beautiful summer when we (hopefully) can once again go on a city trip. Our guest today is Hilbert de Wal, city guide and cultural expert with via-cultura.nl. The common theme today are the historic places that commemorate Carolus Magnus or Charles the Great or Charlemagne, the 'founder' of Europe. The springs and the Dom in Aachen, the unspoilt industrial heritage of Liege, fortifications and cathedrals in Maastricht. Why was Aachen in the early medieval far more important as a city than Maastricht or Liege with their strategic location on the river? What was Charlemagne's greatest innovation? He is seen as the inventor of education.     

Margot Nijkamp is MD of the Open Innovation Academy and works with the human factor in open innovation. She believes that open innovation is only possible in a culture that has so-called feminine aspects. Margot will be running a workshop at Female Tech Heroes, entitled “Be your own career hero”, during which she will share practical tools for creating successful mindsets.

Radio4Brainport visited Margot to find out what it means to be a Power Girl – and how this relates to the human factor in innovation.

Life in a rapidly growing tech startup is not for the faint-hearted. Especially if your timelines are decades into the future. This is the daily reality for Tessie Hartjes, who is Chief of Sales and Marketing at Lightyear. Tessie will be one of the many inspirational speakers at the launch of Female Tech Heroes, a new networking platform dedicated to women working in technology. Female Tech Heroes kicks off at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven on 21 May 2019.

Female Tech Heroes is a new initiative in the Brainport region, designed to make more women enthusiastic about technology. In the first episode of the podcast series for Female Tech Heroes, Erika van der Merwe of Radio4Brainport.org speaks to Ingelou Stol, Communications Manager at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, about why the High Tech Campus is taking the lead in connecting women in the tech industry.

“When we talk to companies in the region, we hear that they are all looking for female talent – and that it is a struggle to find women in such a male-dominated world. With research showing that diverse teams – diverse in background, gender, experience, etc. – deliver the best successes and innovations, it all comes down to encouraging diversity. In our view, creating this event and this network builds towards such diversity”.

Female Tech Heroes “will be more than an event: It will be the start of a network for women in the tech industry”.

This year’s programme reflects the resolve to ensure that meaningful connections are forged. “This time there are more ways for women to interact, and more room for networking. Amazing women will tell their stories – women in high positions, researchers, engineers – all talking about their creations and how they work in the world of tomorrow”, Stol says.

Female Tech Heroes launches on 21 May 2019, at the High Tech Campus. The jam-packed one-day programme includes eight speakers, one panel discussion, 14 workshops and plenty of networking opportunity.

Female Tech Heroes is a new initiative, created with the aim of inspiring women to explore the world of technology. Former European Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, was the face of the launch of this new network – a fitting role for a woman who has devoted decades to forging the way for women in business, politics and technology.

Erika van der Merwe, on behalf of Radio4Brainport.org, spoke to Neelie at the launch of Female Tech Heroes in 2019, at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, in the Netherlands.

Anique Soetermeer believes that teamwork is the key to success in innovation and in doing business. Based on her experience as co-founder of the start-up accelerator HighTechXL, she is also of the view that diversity within the team increases team performance – provided that the diversity is nurtured and managed well. In the fourth podcast in the series for Female Tech Heroes, Radio4Brainport spoke to Anique about the power of diversity.

“The team is everything, because a good business model can be copied and IP can be worked around. But a great team can’t just be copied,” Anique says.

She refers to a plethora of research on the key elements in creating a high-performance team, and cites vital characteristics such as having a common purpose, and establishing trust amongst members of the team. “There is an important characteristic for team success – diversity – which I think is a special one.”

Research suggests that more diverse teams outperform more homogenous teams in a number of ways, but that there is a caveat: A non-performing homogenous team will outperform a heterogeneous team. “So, it is quite a risk to build a diverse team, but it is worth the risk, because in the end it will give you so much more.”

Annually, an average of 6,4 billion hens lay 1,1 trillion eggs. Simultaneously one third of all food per year is lost or wasted which includes eggs that have short shelf life and whose fragile shell is not the most suitable protection against processing and transport. In the project ‘how do you like your eggs’ the content becomes container, an egg cup is produced from discarded eggs. In fact, damaged and b-stock egg whites and shells are thermoformed into bio-plastic cups with zero additives.

BC Materials transforms pure earth of construction sites to local building materials such as clay plasters, compressed earth blocks and rammed earth for walls and floors. These products are circular, carbon neutral, healthy and possess minimal grey energy. Jean-Paul Linnartz interviewed Anton Maertens about the project Exploded View at Dutch Design Week 2020. 

Ons veranderende lichaam is een gevoelig onderwerp. De samenleving waarin we leven heeft een hoge mate van maakbaarheid en met behulp van allerlei filters profileren we ons op social media als mooi, jong en vrolijk. Tijdens de corona pandemie ondervinden we allemaal dagelijks het gevolg van onze lichamelijke kwetsbaarheid. In het maatschappelijke debat hangt de zorg voor het veranderende lichaam samen met de steeds hogere kosten die gepaard gaan met veroudering of ziekte.

Social designer Joost van Wijmen onderzoekt hoe het lichaam verandert. Door het lichaam verzamelen we ervaring en kennis over deze veranderingen, het toont onze flexibiliteit en veerkracht evenals onze kwetsbaarheid of koppigheid. In zijn doorlopende project ENCOUNTER staat centraal hoe de mens deze veranderingen ervaart. Aanvullend werkt Joost met het zorgdomein om te kijken hoe deze ervaringen een plek krijgen.

Facebook increasingly influences how we view the world. We see the opinions of our friends responding to news that may or may not be fake. But which messages we see first and which messages remain hidden is all controlled by algorithms. Algorithms based on Artificial Intelligence. And these algorithms are the work of a large research team led by Professor Yann LeCun.

LeCun, thereby is one of the leading technologists behind one of the largest companies in the world. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerburg recognized that his ideas could really boost Facebook, when LeCun was building a formidable reputation in the academic world with his convolutional neural networks, and when already almost all handwritten checks are processed by his algorithms, but when the link between social media and AI was still unexplored. Meanwhile, social media controlled by AI are influencing our lives every day.

AI in Motion, a start-up at the Eindhoven TU/e campus, is making a virtual digital track to support autonomous vehicles. That makes it possible to introduce AI-driven shuttle busses in the near future. AIIM succesfully tested 5G communication to remotely control the vehicle.
