Barry and Abigail discuss Sounds Like This by Eric Hutchinson and sample Fortescue Fisherman's Ale, It’s A Wonderful Ale 2022, Sparkles Sky Dancer Strawberry Short Cake, and Into the Dankness from Glasstown Brewing Company in Millville, New Jersey. Many thanks to the owners and staff of Glasstown Brewing Company, including the dynamic sister-brother duo Jenifer Simmons and Mike Rossi, for speaking with us and for opening the taproom early to allow us to record! Read about the history of glassmaking in South Jersey! Abigail plugged Lolita Podcast by Jamie Loftus in reference to Outside Villanova. Barry recognized some elements of U + Ur Hand by P!nk in Rock & Roll. Barry compared Oh! to It’s My Job by Jimmy Buffett. Barry and Abigail were admiring James Jamerson basslines in three videos sent to Barry by friend of the pod (and bassist) Jack Cornell. Jukebox: Can I Do (Olivia Newton-John and ELO and British Beers)

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Greg Jong [The Procession, previously discussed on Musique Marécageuse (The Procession & Swamp Head Brewery) and interviewed on A Dozen Updates (The Procession Reunion Special)] discuss Greg’s Jukebox submission, Xanadu by Olivia Newton-John and ELO. We also sample London Pride from Fuller's Brewery, Morland Old Speckled Hen from Greene King, and Newcastle from Lagunitas Brewing Company. Barry once again brought up A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs, specifically Episode 160: “Flowers in the Rain” by the Move. Greg referenced an advert for John Smith’s beer featuring a jingle about a widget. Check out Greg’s website, and buy his new album with Pure Reason Revolution, Above Cirrus! Listen to ReduXanadu, which has this album’s song resequenced in the order in which they appear in the film. Our next Jukebox episode will be Mutemath by Mutemath, submitted by Frances Walton. Bonus: A Christmas Day’s Eve (Original Holiday Songs by Friends of the Podcast)

Bonus: A Christmas Day’s Eve (Original Holiday Songs by Friends of the Podcast)

We are excited to share this bonus episode with all of you. Several musicians who have appeared on the podcast or will be making their debut in early 2023 were kind enough to share their Christmas greetings… and their Christmas songs… for our Pops on Hops fans! Some of these are older songs, and some were recorded specifically for this episode. First up is “The Christmas Song” performed by Connie and Nick Martino (feat. Daphne Martino). Nick will be joining us next season to discuss his work with New York Funk Exchange. Our second entry is from Matt Carlson of Harborcoat. Matt produced a new Christmas single for 2022, a cover of Valley Winter Song by Fountains of Wayne. Listen to Matt’s interview in our episode Friends are Inclusive. Up next is Jack Cornell, who shared an old Olympic Ass-Kicking Team song, “Christmas on the Faces.” Listen to Jack’s interview in our episode Friendship Wins. Rounding out our special is a song by Grammy-winning artist Jon Carroll, formerly of Starland Vocal Band. Jon shared his recording of Going Home For Christmas, a song he has long played at the Annual Jingle Jam Concerts in Leesburg, Virginia, to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Listen to Jon’s interview in our episode Today (With Jon Carroll). We will see everybody when season three begins in March 2023. We will kick things off with a discussion of Xanadu by ELO, submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Greg Jong of The Procession. This episode will be released on March 3, 2023. A Sampler Platter (The Platters and Christmas Beers)

A Sampler Platter (The Platters and Christmas Beers)

It’s time for “Pop’s Pop on Pops on Hops!” Barry, Abigail, and special guest Barry Hummel, Sr. (Barry’s pop and Abigail’s pop-pop) discuss A Christmas Album by The Platters and sample three Christmas beers: Merry Monkey from Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown, Pennsylvania; St. Nikolaus Bock from Penn Brewery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Peppermint Porter from Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. in Lexington, Kentucky. Barry put in a plug for A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs’ Episode 31: “Only You” by the Platters. Barry, Sr.’s favorite song by The Platters is My Prayer, as canonized in our series of Hummel family favorites albums. (His favorite Christmas song is The Greatest Gift of All by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.) Barry loves The Beach Boys’ version of Auld Lang Syne. The Platters included a version of For Auld Lang Syne on their original Christmas record. The Platters appeared multiple times on American Bandstand, music-performance and dance television program that aired in various versions from 1952 to 1989. Watch their Bandstand performance from 1959 and their Bandstand interview from 1967. Up next… Xanadu by ELO, submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Greg Jong of The Procession. This episode will be released on March 3, 2023. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we’re drinking when we’re not on mic! Twisted Tasters (Tori Amos and Twisted Trunk Brewing)

Twisted Tasters (Tori Amos and Twisted Trunk Brewing)

Barry and Abigail discuss Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos and sample Gardens Gold, Papa Pump, and Beer:30 from Twisted Trunk Brewing in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Before her solo career, Amos was in a band called Y Kant Tori Read. Their eponymous debut album was a commercial failure and the band disbanded shortly after. However, Amos still had to comply with her six-record contract. Early versions of Little Earthquakes were rejected by the record company before the album was reworked with a new producer and eventually released. Abigail heard elements of My Same by Adele in Happy Phantom. Beer:30 features the experimental YQH-1320 hop! Up next… A Christmas Album by The Platters Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Bonus: Pink Floyd Leftovers (Pink Floyd and brewLAB)

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Jeff “Jafo” Shettler discuss some Pink Floyd songs and some beers that were “left over” after Jafo’s Jukebox episode, Wish There Were Beer. We sample Uncertainty Reigns and Sweet Zombie Jesus from brewLAB in Carpinteria, California, as well as one of Jafo’s own homebrew creations, Ukrainian Imperial Stout. At the time of recording, Wish There Were Beer was tied for our fifth-most-listened-to episode. Tracks we discuss include Hey Hey Rise Up, a single featuring Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Ukrainian band BoomBox. The vocals are lifted from a viral video of “Khlyvnyuk singing Oi u luzi chervona kalyna (Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow)”, a Ukrainian patriotic march written in 1914 to honor the Sich Riflemen. Proceeds from the single support the charitable organization Ukraine Humanitarian Fund. We also discuss When the Tigers Broke Free and What Shall We Do Now?, two tracks that appear in the film Pink Floyd: The Wall but do not appear on the album The Wall by Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd, the main character in Pink Floyd: The Wall was played by Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats. He later wrote Do They Know It’s Christmas? by Band Aid and organized the Live Aid concert held simultaneously in London, England, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Chats About Beer (Maroon 5 and Brewery Leftovers)

Chats About Beer (Maroon 5 and Brewery Leftovers)

Barry and Abigail discuss Songs About Jane by Maroon 5 and sample “leftover” beers from previously reviewed breweries: Eau Melon from Intracoastal Brewing Company in Melbourne, Florida; Fall Shakecation from Mastry’s Brewing Co. in St. Pete Beach, Florida; and Double Vanilla Scoop Shake from 3 Sons Brewing Co. in Dania Beach, Florida. Abigail and Barry recognized similarities in the stories told in This Love and Twice as Hard by The Black Crowes. Abigail compared the chorus of The Sun to some of the lyrics in What I Did For Love from the musical A Chorus Line. The imagery in Must Get Out reminded Abigail of Love Comes Tumbling Down by Matt Nathanson. Double Vanilla Scoop Shake was a collaboration with Mikkeller, a brewery based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and featured Mostra Coffee (based in San Diego, California) as an ingredient. Hummels Love Hops (Hindu Love Gods and Side Hustle Beer Company)

Barry and Abigail discuss Hindu Love Gods by Hindu Love Gods and sample Porch Pineapple, ...and There's Your BFF, Enough Space - Collab With Hilton Head Island Coffee Roasters, and Rocket Emoji from Side Hustle Beer Company in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Hindu Love Gods was a side project of Bill Berry, Peter Buck, and Mike Mills of R.E.M. with Warren Zevon (whose most famous song is Werewolves of London). This album contains a cover of Battleship Chains, a song written by Terry Anderson for The Woodpeckers. We covered this story in detail during our interview with Jack Cornell, Friendship Wins (Jack Cornell and Tripping Animals Brewing). The Woods’ recording of Battleship Chains is not available on the internet, but The Georgia Satellites’ recording is. Bill Berry’s first musical group since R.E.M., The Bad Ends, recently released a single (All Your Friends Are Dying) ahead of their debut album to be released in January. The only two other Hindu Love Gods songs available are Gonna Have a Good Time Tonight and Narrator, the latter of which was written by Bill Berry. Bonus: Today (with Jon Carroll)

Bonus: Today (with Jon Carroll)

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Jon Carroll (Starland Vocal Band) discuss Jon’s musical past, present, and future and review three of his recent singles: Today (Not Tomorrow), (You Gotta) Stand Up!, and Rich Man’s Daughter. Jon and Barry met in the wonderful Patreon community of Stand Up! with Pete Dominick. Jon recalled some of his favorite tracks from his youth: Mahalia Jackson’s If I Can Help Somebody and The Chimes’ Let Your Hair Down, and the track that made his mother appreciate soul music: Brook Benton’s Rainy Night in Georgia. Jon also remembers where he was the first time he ever heard Dire Straits’ Money For Nothing. Jon suggested we listen to Harry Nilsson’s Nilsson Sings Newman… so we added it to our Virtual Jukebox! Jon listened to our episode on The Black Crowes! He thought we should have compared the Crowes to Faces or Humble Pie instead of to The Rolling Stones (no one is safe!). Follow Jon on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or YouTube for information about his upcoming album! We closed with Jon Carroll’s Tight Connection to My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Love), a Bob Dylan cover. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Bier Himmel (Jimmy Horzen and German Festbiers)

Barry and Abigail discuss Oktoberfest ist Wunderbar by Jimmy Horzen and sample three German festbiers: Weihenstephaner Festbier from Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, Oktoberfest Märzen from Hacker-Pschorr, and Oktoberfest Märzen / Original Münchner Märzen from Paulaner Brauerei. Read the Untappd article that inspired Barry’s beer choices for this episode, including information on the “big six” Munich breweries that can use the Oktoberfest label on their beers. Watch as the wonderful Latvian-born accordionist Ksenija Sidorova introduces her instrument as part of Classic FM's new video series Discover Instruments. Watch Anders Flanderz One Man Band perform the Harry Potter Theme (featuring an accordion!). Watch relative of the pod Zachary “Def Poppa” Hummel play the tuba. Schnitzelbank is a cumulative song that reminded Abigail of Children Go Where I Send Thee (the version she is most familiar with is by Natalie Merchant). Why do beer steins have lids? Jukebox: Make Your Flight (Incubus and Hell 'n Blazes Brewing Company)

Barry, Abigail, and guest Derek Hummel, Sr. (Abigail’s uncle and Barry’s brother), discuss Make Yourself by Incubus and sample Sap Tap, Mabel's Monster Mangos, AIS Chief, and Smoked Pumpkin Habanero from Hell 'n Blazes Brewing Company in Melbourne, Florida. Three Incubus songs were on Abigail’s core musical rotation in high school: Drive, Megalomaniac, and Anna Molly. Sap Tap reminded Abigail of Blueberry Maple Gose by Pompano Beach Brewing Company. Privilege reminded Abigail of the music of RENT (especially the titular song Rent). The “mental piracy” mentioned in When It Comes reminded Abigail of the themes in Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5. The Deviant Crowes (The Black Crowes and Deviant Wolfe Brewing)

Barry and Abigail discuss Shake Your Money Maker by The Black Crowes and sample Nefarious Nebulas, Norwegian Wizard Crisis, I Ain’t Afraid of No Roast, Sourmanjaro, and The Desert Spoon from Deviant Wolfe Brewing in Sanford, Florida. This album reminds Barry of 70s Rolling Stones albums such as Exile on Main Street (you might know Happy), Beggars Banquet, and Let It Bleed, as well as the single Bitch. Barry introduced Abigail to a new genre term, roadhouse blues, encapsulated by The Doors’ song Roadhouse Blues. The Black Crowes originated as Mr. Crowe’s Garden, a name based on Johnny Crow’s Garden, a children’s book written and illustrated by Leonard Leslie Brooke. Ageusia is the loss of the sense of taste. Thick N’ Thin has some piano elements that remind Barry of Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis. Read about sotol. The Man I Used To Be reminded Abigail of Never Tear Us Apart by INXS and I Want You (She’s So Heavy) by The Beatles. Barry heard elements of Oh, Darling! and Honey Pie (The Beatles). When Barry was recently in Asheville, North Carolina, he visited White Labs Brewing Co., who are known for brewing beers of nearly identical recipes, only altering the yeast, to produce noticeable differences in flavor and aroma. How to Save a Life was once certified as the best-selling digital album of all time at the time, beating the record previously held by Coldplay’s X&Y. We present that conversation to you here, approximately one year after we released our own R.E.M. album rankings on R(ank).E.M. (R.E.M. and Royal Palm Brewing Company). Matt and Barry met as Patreon subscribers of Stand Up! with Pete Dominick. Check out the playlist of Barry’s and Abigail’s favorite songs from their favorite R.E.M. albums. Barley and Rain (Midnight Oil and Intracoastal Brewing Company)

Barry and Abigail discuss Diesel and Dust by Midnight Oil and sample Southern Style, Mini-Weights, Oh Snap! Crack! Pop!, Commodore Crunch, Burberry Baltic Porter, and Vine And Dandy from Intracoastal Brewing Company in Melbourne, Florida. Barry saw Midnight Oil live at a Club 1235 in Miami Beach in June 1988 with his medical school classmate, Dr. Michael Franz. Abigail heard the iconic first three notes of Beds Are Burning as very similar to the iconic first three notes of Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. Abigail associated Dreamworld with Can’t Get There From Here by R.E.M., although she couldn’t quite put her finger on why. Androporosphere (which appears in Whoah) is a made-up word that is a play on anthroposphere. Barry recommended Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson. Abigail believes The Home Depot Beat may be a direct rip-off of Sell My Soul. The double clap at the beginning of Sometimes reminded Abigail of this TikTok. Jugs (Florence + The Machine and Cypress & Grove Brewing)

Barry and Abigail discuss Lungs by Florence + The Machine and sample Scarlet King Red Ale, Well & Good, Lost In Oz Hazy Double, and Tall Pine Porter from Cypress & Grove Brewing Co. in Gainesville, Florida. See the setlist of the performance that Barry and Abigail saw in 2011 when Florence + The Machine opened for U2. Watch the available music videos for this album. Kiss With a Fist reminds Barry of early music by The Pretenders, such as Pretenders, previously reviewed by us on Hoptenders (The Pretenders & Chapman's Brewing Co.). Kiss With a Fist saw an early incarnation as Happy Slap by Ashok, an earlier musical project of Florence Welch. Florence + The Machine covered You Got the Love by The Source featuring Candi Staton. SIP (INXS and NOBO Brewing Company)

Barry and Abigail discuss KICK by INXS and sample Island Paradise, Jalapeño Honey Blonde, Lichtenhainer (German Smoked Sour Ale), and Caramel Apple Pie from NOBO Brewing Company in Boynton Beach, Florida. Read about the mysterious death of Michael Hutchence, the frontman of INXS, and read this list of songs inspired by his life and death. Barry went through the exercise of resequencing this album as Kicked Again. The chorus of Devil Inside reminds Abigail of the chorus of You Really Got Me by The Kinks. Wild Life reminds Barry of Apache by The Sugarhill Gang. Mystify reminds Abigail of Fever by Peggy Lee. What is Frühschoppen? Dorks on Corks on 4-1 (“Weird Al” Yankovic and Schnebly Redland’s Winery)

Barry and Abigail discuss In 3-D by “Weird Al” Yankovic and sample AvoVino, Carambola Wine, Guava Wine, Passion Fruit, and Lychee Wine from Schnebly Redland’s Winery in Homestead, Florida. Barry saw “Weird Al” in July 1996 at The Fonda Theater in Hollywood, California during The Bad Hair Tour. Years later, in August 2015, Barry surprised Abigail with tickets to see “Weird Al” at The Broward Center for the Performing Artsduring The Mandatory World Tour. JP, our wine tour guide from Schnebly, recommended pairing several of the wines with locally-produced smoked fish dip from What Are We Smokin'? Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo in Beat It by Michael Jackson. Rick Derringer of The McCoys (who produced In 3-D) recreated the guitar solo on Eat It by “Weird Al.” Don Pardo of Saturday Night Live fame appears on I Lost on Jeopardy, “Weird Al”’s parody of Jeopardy by The Greg Kihn Band. The Egg Scrambler is a real product advertised by Ron Popeil that was referenced by “Weird Al” in Mr. Popeil. Ron’s sister Lisa Popeil was one of the backup singers in “Weird Al”’s Mr. Popeil! Bonus: Friendship Wins (Jack Cornell and Tripping Animals Brewing)

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Jack Cornell discuss Jack’s album One in Wins and sample Octopus Backyard and Hundreds of Babies from Tripping Animals Brewing Co. in Doral, Florida. Jack and his friend Terry Anderson have been musical partners for over 40 years and have collectively formed the rhythm section of The Fabulous Knobs, The Woods, and, most recently, Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team (or the O.A.K. Team). The musical genealogy of the North Carolina music scene is complex, and we do a lot of name dropping in this episode. For a more detailed explanation of the cast of characters we reference, we recommend reading The Fabulous Knobs Wikipedia page or visiting our website to read the extended edition of these show notes. Jack contributed a cover of You’re So Rude by Faces to Be Good to Yourself, an album featuring original songs and performances by North Carolina artists to benefit musicians battling addiction and depression. Jack volunteers with the Novick Cardiac Alliance, a charity that provides total cardiac care to children in low- and middle-income countries. Abigail matriculated Jack into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music by comparing his song The Man to Stop Stop by The Black Keys. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Queen of Hops (Matt Nathanson and 26˚ Brewing Co.)

Barry and Abigail discuss Modern Love by Matt Nathanson and sample Pompano Pale, Galaxy Skate, and Liquid Abstract from 26˚ Brewing Co. in Pompano Beach, Florida. Matt Nathanson has released two cover albums, Pyromattia (Def Leppard covers) and Achtung Matty (song-by-song covers of Achtung Baby by U2), and recently released Junk Life, a single with Brett Dennen, who was previously reviewed on See the Gourd (Brett Dennen and Pumpkin Beer Samples). Jukebox: Hoptenders (The Pretenders and Chapman’s Brewing Company)

Barry, Abigail, and guest Todd Sider (Abigail’s uncle and Barry’s brother-in-law) discuss Todd’s Jukebox submission, Pretenders by The Pretenders, and sample Harvester, Undaunted, Dr. Jekyll Low Cal Hazy IPA, and Mr. Hyde High Cal Imperial IPA from Chapman’s Brewing Company in Angola, Indiana. Abigail's only knowledge of The Pretenders prior to reviewing this album was their Christmas song 2000 Miles. Other woman-led punk rock bands of this era mentioned were Pat Benatar, Heart, and Blondie. Try listening to Eminence Front by The Who or Where’s the Orchestra by Billy Joel with only one headphone in! This album includes a cover of Stop Your Sobbing, originally by The Kinks. Hi (Peter Gabriel and Maui Brewing Co.)

Hi (Peter Gabriel and Maui Brewing Co.)

Barry and Abigail discuss So by Peter Gabriel and sample Waimea Red, Pono Life, and POG Hazy IPA from Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, Hawaii. Barry’s first exposure to this album was the music video for Sledgehammer. Abigail’s knowledge of Phil Collins and Genesis comes from the Tarzan soundtrack, which Phil Collins wrote. Barry incorrectly remembered that Sussudio by Phil Collins was knocked out of the Billboard Hot 100 #1 spot by Sledgehammer; in fact, it was Invisible Touch by Genesis that Sledgehammer replaced. Mercy Street was dedicated to Anne Sexton and inspired by her poem 45 Mercy Street. Guy Fieri visited 3 Sons Brewing for the food on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Barry heard Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello, and Jakob Dylan in Cory Chisel’s voice. Calico Jukebox (Jimmy Buffett and Florida Keys Brewing Company)

Barry and Abigail discuss Coconut Telegraph by Jimmy Buffett and sample Key Largo Passionfruit Lager, Bloody Iguana, Resistant Strain Double Hibiscus Kolsch, Cranberry Cinnamon Sour, and Kritter Needs Jesus from Florida Keys Brewing Company in Islamorada, Florida. Before medical school, Barry’s entire knowledge of Jimmy Buffett consisted of Margaritaville and Come Monday. Barry recalled first hearing Why Don’t We Get Drunk on the jukebox at the now-defunct CJ's Oyster Bar in Gainesville, Florida.  Abigail’s first exposure to Jimmy Buffett was The Parakeet Album, a collection of Buffett hits sung by the W. O. Smith Music School singers. This reminded Barry of Disney Songs the Satchmo Way by Louis Armstrong. Justin and Dr. Sydnee McElroy discuss Buffett’s medical maladies on Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine, episode 374: Jimmy Buffett. Abigail thought the opening of The Good Fight by Jimmy Buffett sounds like the opening of Ricochet by David Bowie. As always, the “Anosmia” jingle was performed by our friend Pete Coe! Barry and Abigail discuss Eye to the Telescope by KT Tunstall and sample Respect the Escalator, All Tea, All Shade, Tony Bag O' Donuts, and Barrel-Aged Coquito (Pistachio) from J. Wakefield Brewing in Miami, Florida. J. Wakefield Brewing is in the Wynwood district of Miami, known for Wynwood Walls. Johnathan Wakefield, owner of J. Wakefield Brewing, hosts The Beer Hour, described as “the intersection of craft beer + pop culture,” on SiriusXM’s Business Radio (also available on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts). Aside from Eye to the Telescope, Abigail’s only other exploration of KT Tunstall was the song Hold On from her subsequent album Drastic Fantastic. KT Tunstall headlined Times Square New Year’s Eve 2022. You can watch the full broadcast, including two performances by Tunstall, on Facebook. Read about the contralto voice type. Barry and Abigail discuss A Fab Four Christmas, Volume. 1 by The Fab Four and sample P. Swayze IPA, Chet Belgian Tripel, Schweinator, and Voidgazer from Lincoln’s Beard Brewing Co. in Miami, Florida. Read the story of Grace Beddell and her impact on Lincoln’s beard. John Falco, co-owner of Lincoln’s Beard, is a big fan of Patrick Swayze, and many of the brewery's beer names are references to his filmography! Oh, no! Fry’s Electronics recently closed after 36 years! Another source for Barry’s impulse CD purchases has bitten the dust. Bonus: Greet the Hummels... and Friends! (Original Holiday Songs by Friends of the Podcast)

We wish all of you a healthy and happy holiday season! We are excited to share this very special bonus episode with all of you. Several friends of the podcast, musicians who have already appeared or will be making their debut in early 2022, were kind enough to share their Christmas greetings… and their Christmas songs… for our Pops on Hops fans! So, pour yourself an eggnog, settle in, and enjoy the magical “Christmas presence” provided by our friends! Paul Zawacki - and his daughter Hannah - shared an original Christmas song by The Procession, All I Want is Nothing For Christmas This Year (Pops on Hops exclusive!). Be sure to catch our discussion of The Procession and our interview with members of the band from last spring. Matt Carlson (Harborcoat, The Stick Arounds) shared his cover of Old Toy Trains by Roger Miller (Pops on Hops exclusive!). Matt will be joining us early in 2022 to discuss Harborcoat's 2021 release, Joy is Elusive. Austin shared his brand new Christmas single, Christmas Kiss (arranged and produced by Ian Rees), available on iTunes. Ian Rees made his Pops on Hops debut last fall to discuss his most recent solo album, Panic Induced Love. Also, be sure to check out Austin's 2021 release, TTYL. Jack Cornell, bass player with Terry Anderson and the O.A.K. Team, shared their original song Eggnogorant. Jack will be joining us early in 2022 to discuss his recent solo album, One In Wins. To wrap it up, Abigail and Barry share their 2007 family holiday greeting, recorded in the style of The Beatles 1963 Christmas fan club single. Little Species (Talking Heads and Invasive Species Brewing)

Barry and Abigail discuss Little Creatures by Talking Heads and sample Splash Pad, Sour Slurps Disco Future, Snake Jazz, and Ninja Juice from Invasive Species Brewing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Abigail recalled seeing David Byrne at the Hollywood Bowl as part of KCRW’s World Music Festival. Read this review of show’s premiere on June 26, 2005, featuring David Byrne, Arcade Fire, Si*Sé, and the Extra Action Marching Band. Abigail feels that this album “lives in the same space” in her head as Business as Usual by Men at Work, which we previously reviewed in #10: Drinking as Usual. Barry thought that Television Man told a story similar to Being There starring Peter Sellers, based on a Jerzy Kosiński novel. Abigail thought the gospel choir used to open Road to Nowhere was similar to the a cappella opening of Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes by Paul Simon. The “Anosmia” jingle was performed by our friend Pete Coe! You can follow this happy noisemaker on Twitter at @petecoevo. Barry and Abigail discuss Let’s Dance by David Bowie and sample Golden Hour, Bavarian Dreams, Galaxy Starship, and Mk Ultra Cherry from Cultured Collective Brewing in Orange Park, Florida. There was a great debate about the song China Girl by David Bowie and Iggy Pop, which was a rerecording of China Girl by Iggy Pop. Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod (Ian Rees)

Barry and Abigail interview family friend Ian Rees to discuss his latest project, a solo album called Panic Induced Love. Ian discusses many of his musical influences along the way, including The Beatles, Yes, Primus, Radiohead, Sigur Rós, Animal Collective, and Steve Vai. Ian also discussed composer Bruce Broughton, who worked with his father on Disneyland Paris’s CinéMagique attraction, as an influence on his decision to pursue a career as a soundtrack composer. Abigail describes Panic Induced Love as an “edgier version of Owl City.” Ian shared that the track Reasons (A Love Song) was inspired in part by Sleepyhead by Passion Pit. Ian also shared that the track Feathers was inspired in part by Phone Call, a track from the soundtrack to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Everyone discussed their fascination with depressing, complex lyrics that are masked bouncy music, including Jumper by Third Eye Blind. Or just depressing but powerful lyrics like the album Hospice by The Antlers. Ian plays every instrument on every track. Bonus: Atlantic City Meets the Beatles

Bonus: Atlantic City Meets the Beatles

The Beatles performed before 18,000 fans at the Convention Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on August 30, 1964. Among those in attendance were Barry's aunt, Carole Hummel, and family friends Carol "Cris" Crisafulli Johnson, Joan Bacon, and Marie Falzone. Despite the fact that Barry has been a huge Beatles fan since high school, he finally found out about this while discussing our recent Tripping Walruses episode with his aunt! The night before the concert, they stayed at the Lafayette Motel. At 2:15 PM, they left in the back of a fish truck, and a short distance from the Convention Hall, they switched to their waiting tour bus. The Beatles performed their standard 12-song set: Twist And Shout, You Can’t Do That, All My Loving, She Loves You, Things We Said Today, Roll Over Beethoven, Can’t Buy Me Love, If I Fell, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Boys, A Hard Day’s Night, and Long Tall Sally. After the show, The Beatles left the venue in a laundry truck, as their limousine was too conspicuous. That night, they stayed at the Marquis De Lafayette Hotel in nearby Cape May, where they stayed for a few days prior to their September 2nd concert in Philadelphia. During their stay in Atlantic City, John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote two songs for the Beatles For Sale album: Every Little Thing and What You’re Doing. Bonus: R(ank).E.M. (R.E.M. and Royal Palm Brewing Company)

This podcast was the result of a long discussion during the pandemic. There was a lot of talk, but no action. So, Barry bought the basic gear required to record a simple podcast, and wrapped it up for Abigail for Christmas in 2020. During that holiday break, Barry and Abigail put the equipment together to test it, and recorded a brief sample podcast to see if they thought it was worth pushing forward. Today, as a bonus episode, we are going to share that original recording! Barry and Abigail rank their top five R.E.M. albums and share their favorite song from each album. Guess what! We have similar taste in music! We also taste Bubba Shet from Royal Palm Brewing Company in Royal Palm Beach, Florida and hear the long-awaited answer to the question “When did Barry first hear of R.E.M.?”. Welcome to the Pops on Hops Podcast, where we listen to some pops, drink a little hops, and Abigail Hummel gets to hang out with her pop, Barry Hummel! Each episode, one of us will bring a musical assignment to the table, and the other will bring a selection of beers from a craft brewery of their choice. Our goal is to discover new or old music that we love that we may have missed out on due to the generational divide between us, all while sharing some delicious craft beer along the way. Our regular episodes drop every other Friday, but don’t be surprised if we sneak in a few bonus episodes featuring artist interviews and other alternative content. If you want to join the fun, consider submitting an album selection to our Virtual Jukebox. Visit our website for more details.
