West Didsbury Comedy Festival 2020: New Act Heat 3
When lockdown hit and all shows were cancelled for the foreseeable we weren't too sure what to do next with West Didsbury Comedy Festival.
After a few weeks of crying I dusted myself down and decided to get some shows out online and to make the most of the situation.
This episode is the audio from our live streamed Heat 3 of the New Act competition and it is an absolute beauty.
I joined MC Chris Brooker throughout a lot of the show as we introduced some brilliant new-ish acts, plus the amazing Micky P Kerr who closed the show.

Tony is a rapidfire gag merchant with an arsenal full of one-liners, for laughs-per-minute he's tough to beat! Renowned on the circuit for his quick wit and beautifully crafted material I am personally a big fan of Tony and his work! Something of a Twitter sensation, Tony's jokes turn up in all sorts of places, from greetings cards to The Times newspaper, even if you've never heard of him there's a good chance that you'll have laughed at one of his gags.
We enjoy a lovely rambling conversation which takes us everywhere from dog walking, to family life, static electricity, corona virus, online comedy and bins...mainly bins.

LEE JONES
LEE JONES is both the owner of ROFL comedy club and also the owner of both WBU and WBF World Boxing Titles.
Its a fascinating discussion about boxing (I know literally nothing about it, but how often do you talk to a world champion!) and how Lee ended up with first a comedy club in Burslam and now currently ROFL in Newcastle Under Lyme.
Not too surprisingly Lee is a focused and determined man who likes things just a certain way, and it is that attention to detail and winning mentality that is gaining ROFL rave reviews from both comedians and audiences. A chat almost from the other side of comedy where we look at the impact of Lockdown on his business and what a club owner thinks about the circuit.

S2 E10: Boothby Graffoe should have been performing a sold out on opening night of my comedy festival, WEST DIDSBURY COMEDY FESTIVAL. Now for obvious reasons the festival could not go ahead, so rather than be beaten completely we teamed up with Jokepit.com and EVO Didsbury to put a mini version of the festival live and online. HOWARD READ
It’s been too long and I am very sorry! Here is the brilliant HOWARD READ and we chat all things from wood burning stoves to cruise ships. Howard Read is an award-winning writer, stand-up comic, songwriter, actor and animator. He specialises in writing and performing family and children’s comedy for stage and TV.
Howard is best known for his unique creation Little Howard, an animated interactive six-year-old boy, who performs alongside him on stage and screen. Together they stole the show at the 2007 Royal Variety Performance. They had their own show Little Howard’s Big Question which ran for three series on CBBC, BBC1 & BBC2 and won the Writer’s Guild Award for Best Children’s TV script in 2011. Howard has since been one of the most sought-after writers in family television. He is currently has various comedy projects in development for television, stage and online.

MICK FERRY
MICK FERRY describes himself as ‘A jobbing stand up comedian that is too old for TV’. Of course he is much more than that. A ridiculously talented standup, Mick is admired and respected by everyone from the newest open spot to the biggest names in comedy. Able to switch from surrealism to anecdotal story telling to topical to on the spot observations in a flash, it’s no surprise that he is one of the most in demand comics in the UK. He should also be a household name. As genuinely one of all my all time favourite comedians, I was a bit nervous before this and was determined not to mess it up! I nearly managed it...but sadly not quite. We cover a lot, I’m not going to list exactly what, you will just have to listen. All I will say is if anyone knows who did the material about the frog stuck in ice please let me know. JOHN SCOTT
JOHN SCOTT has been a pro stand up comedian for 15 years and it’s all been going very well: Gigging all over the world, hugely respected in the industry for his satirical and topical humour, award winning and arse kicking festival shows. Behind the mask though John has had his struggles. His misdiagnosed mental health condition labelled him schizophrenic for five years before he took himself to hospital. There he came face-to-face with psychologists who had seen his comedy and had decided the performer they were watching was definitely bipolar.
The chance encounter meant John was correctly diagnosed and treated. From here John has gone on to get a first class honours degree at the age of 49, found a passion for writing plays that is going ridiculously well and rekindled his romance with live performance. JUNIOR SIMPSON
With his infectious energy and huge stage presence, it is easy to see why Junior Simpson is a circuit favourite. Simpson has a boundless joy and exuberance that has audiences hooked with hilarity. A true observational comic, Simpson finds his humour in the everyday and humdrum with anecdotes of his world travels as a comedian adding a personal originality to his set. An announcement! Kev Rook has decided that it is about time that Manchester had a solely comedy dedicated festival again and therefore over 24/25/26 April 2020 the inaugural WEST DIDSBURY COMEDY FESTIVAL will launch. ATHENA KUGBLENU is a BBC New Comedy Awards finalist and 2017 nominee for the 99 Club Female Comedians’ Bursary. She writes for BBC Radio 4, regularly appears on BBC radio and in 2017 represented the UK at the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival. CONRAD KOCH
CONRAD KOCH is South Africa’s top comedy ventriloquist, and possibly the only one. He is a double International Emmy nominated comedian, most famous for the puppet Chester Missing. Chester Missing has his own TV show, 300k twitter followers and has won numerous awards in his own right, including being the first recipient of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Anti-Racism Award.
Known for his biting satire, Chester Missing has interviewed most of South Africa’s elite from President down, and has held a number of regular radio and TV slots, and even wrote an award-winning book. Conrad’s live shows have received wide political acclaim. The material has an edge and challenging issues like race and apartheid are tackled head on.
In a fascinating, entertaining and educational chat we discuss the South African comedy scene, the current political climate and the role of comedy within it, how some very powerful people have tried to shut Conrad down, what it’s like to be a white South African challenging stereotypes and punching up against the system, and, we discover what Conrad really thinks of his creation Chester Missing.

JOHNNY WHITE REALLY- REALLY is difficult to describe, even in his own words. A knot of low self-esteem, self doubt and worry collided with an at times beautifully creative introspection and dreamlike honesty. The laughs at times are in the nuances and sit in the places that laughter should not sit, but it just makes it all the more fascinating. All of this combines for a unique performance and as Chortle put it ‘Quite possibly the most underrated act at this years Edinburgh Fringe’. PAUL ZENON is a legend of the Magic scene. Performing since his teenage years Paul has toured the world, played with the biggest names in the business and built a wikipedia level of knowledge about magic and magicians and the art of the craft. You will recognise him from hundreds of TV appearances as performer, presenter and pundit including a Royal Command Performance, four one-man 'specials' on C4 and ITV, and as a regular Dictionary Corner guest on Channel 4's 'Countdown, with around 120 appearances to date.
It was a real honour to speak with Paul whose passion and devotion for magic is both hugely apparent and infectious. We chat about the early years, his big breaks, how he came up with the stage name 'Zenon', the current state of magic and so much more. A wonderful engaging guest.

Tony Law is a genuine legend of alternative comedy. Often discussed in terms of being a 'cult' comedian, he is by his own admission, making up for lost time, but now producing some of his greatest work ever. We have a big chat that was actually spread over 3 phonecalls due to other commitments and really a desire to just keep chatting! There aren't too many stones that we don't kick at, if not completely turn over.
This was a tricky one to edit and I have been pretty ruthless to get it down to an acceptable length, whilst not ripping the heart out of it! Therefore please feel free to attack this in chunks!

Lauded for his free flowing story telling style Craig has played all over the world to audiences who never quite know what is going to happen next. His career has seen him sword fight Jim Carey, support Frankie Boyle on tour, appear on Russel Howard’s Good News, Michael McKintyre Roadshow and Dave’s One Night Stand. Craig takes us back to the early days, Canada as a new comic, white water rafting as a career, his views on the circuit.
Craig by his own admission is a bit of a nightmare on social media, but I am glad actually that we stayed on track talking about him and his background and comedy, rather than feeling a need to be controversial and push buttons.It was a tricky episode to edit down into a show as there was so much content and I had enough to go a few different ways with the theme - we have some bonus material from this one that I will definitely release at a future date.

PHIL ELLIS
Phil Ellis is an award winning standup comedian who excels in delivering the unexpected. A gifted and naturally funny performer with a penchant for the obscure. He is a star of BBC Radio 4. The hit Edinburgh Fringe show Funz & Gamez won him the Fosters Panel Prize, which later went to BBC3. Phil’s TV appearances include The Russell Howard Hour (Sky), Drunk History: UK (Comedy Central), as well as writing and performing credits on BBC Three’s The Tapeface Tapes. Phil also co-wrote three comedy shorts- Phil’s Ill- for Dave.
Phil is without doubt a rising star and he has just finished series 2 of his very own BBC Radio 4 sitcom, Phil Ellis Is Trying. Phil and Kev are old friends and the conversation flows from memories of each other’s early material, to how Phils anarchic style fit the comedy club circuit, his big break, BBC Radio 4 recording with heroes like Johnny Vegas, Alexi Sayle, Lee Mack and others, and plenty of giggling. We even talk about Leanne.
