For S3E9, I'm trying a new format. I've been around the country interviewing Chief Constables and others for their perspectives on police leadership and promotion. In this interview, I turn the questions on myself! I invite my good friend Adrian to ask me questions of interest to police officers and promotion candidates alike, as a new perspective for your CPD. For S3E5, I share a trilogy of related videos uploaded to YouTube last month, just before the Casey Review published. The themes are centred around violence against women and girls, and how VAWG may well feature on your promotion boards. You may find these audio versions helpful if you haven't seen the videos, or indeed just want a useful reminder on your commute now that the news focus has moved on to other things.

First, I cover the subject of conduct and setting standards. Then I talk through the NPCC's VAWG reports, covering all facets of that. Finally, I go in depth into the subject of investigations, specifically relating to the Elizabeth Stanko report on the police investigation of sexual offences. I include various promotion board questions and prompts for you as an aspiring leader to be aware of the zeitgeist around these wider policing issues. In S3E4, I give my thoughts on the recent article published by the Police Federation about 'worryingly low promotion success rates down to a lack of learning time during work'. They point out how around only 1 in 6 of their survey respondents were successful in promotion last year, demonstrating how brutally.competitive promotion processes are. The key angle the PFEW take is protected learning time, especially for the exam (which you'll find I've blogged on before). But the real competition begins when competing with other officers for substantive positions.

I discuss the ins and outs of this article, the ramifications on promotion processes across the country, and how you can better navigate the minefield. I also explore what's on the horizon and recent changes by the College of Policing; for example, consider the fact they're already mooting a new police promotion framework for officers within the Federated ranks, to replace NPPF, provisionally called the Sergeant and Inspector Promotion Process (SIPP).

It's good to see the Fed now taking an interest in the professional aspirations and leadership CPD of their members. Episode 25 of this Year of the Tiger series of police leadership podcasts focuses on supervising investigations and the process of investigation.

Initially, I cover the process and expand on concepts I've previously blogged about (link below), plus your responsibilities as a leader, manager, and supervisor. Not least, given this is an area many forces are failing at, as identified in the PEEL inspections. I then provide an extra 10 minutes at the end, because since originally recording this, the College of Policing launched a consultation on a new investigation process; funnily enough, closely resembling the stages of investigation I outline in my 2021 blog, 'Investigating the Future'!

In this festive video episode of my Police Promotion & Leadership podcast, I  share insights and tips from a batch of recent testimonials I've received. I have an exciting and inspiring leadership interview for you as Episode 23 of Season 2! This week I had the privilege of interviewing Chief Constable Lee Freeman of Humberside Police. Yes, that Humberside Police, recently rated the best performing force in the country by HMICFRS!

I think you'll enjoy his grounded communication style and 'intelligence-led leadership' approach, as I ask him about performance, leadership, culture and more under his stewardship in Humberside Police. There's a heap of lessons here for aspiring leaders everywhere, including Lee's universal tips on police promotion. He also shares his perspectives on leading with legitimacy, leading change, building trust, culture, communication/listening, supervision, how he turned the force around from worst- to best-performing in the country, and much more besides.

Welcome to Episode 19 of Season 2, where delve into the subject of leading performance and how it can feel like the Spanish Inquisition! I was inspired to record this podcast, having attended a talk on police performance given by Humberside DCC Paul Anderson, at the Emergency Services Show yesterday, 21/09/22. In my last episode, I interviewed ex-ARV-Sgt Harry Tangye and author of 'Cornish Scoop'. I'm excited to share another great scoop with you in Episode 18 of Season 2, where I had the privilege of interviewing ACC Una Jennings, an inspiring senior leader in Cheshire Police.

Welcome to number 11 of Season 2, 'Year of the Tiger'. In this episode, I discuss the Met Police CVF values, namely professionalism, courage, integrity and compassion. This may well be some very timely support for those seeking police promotion to Sergeant in the Met!

I often ask coaching clients, 'How are your values?', as an example promotion board question. It's essential to do the work understanding your own values, that of your force, then how they resonate. Welcome to Episode 9 of Season 2, 'Year of the Tiger'. Here I discuss success stories literally from here to Kathmandu. I spend a few minutes introducing the core themes of the video, then get into the feedback and learning points for consideration. I share success stories and insights from England & Wales forces, PSNI, and one of the many recent successful officers who contacted me about their 2022 An Garda promotion competition..

The 'competition' is an element that many officers forget about. Particularly when their experience to date has been "merely" to hit a pass mark on an exam (or leadership qualification in Police Scotland). This feels challenging enough, yet the next hurdle is even higher and can vary each year, with forces choosing only the BEST available promotion candidates. Being an effective promotion candidate is different to being an effective operational cop, and so can be frustrating for those who have great talent to offer forces. Particularly when the forces themselves do little to support their own officers with relevant leadership and promotion CPD.

These are the exact reasons why I started Rank Success, to support great cops become great future leaders in policing. The Kathmandu reference is in relation to a fascinating story of an officer shutting themselves in a hotel room, one of the few places with an internet connection, to complete their promotion application while on a trip to climb Mt Everest! I found the dedication inspiring, was encouraged by the fact they told me my digital toolkit was invaluable, and their result was among the best in force.

Welcome to Episode 8 of Season 2, 'Year of the Tiger'. The ever-eloquent Simon Foy QPM has kindly provided more of his time, delayed his train, and shared his thoughts in this episode, as our paths cross once more delivering training in London. This time, the former Met Police Commander provides a detailed review, constructive critique, and discusses the implications of the recent Police Foundation 'Strategic Review of Policing' report.

This report is one I recently summarised on my YouTube channel for police officers (described by the Police Foundation themselves as "an excellent summary"). Simon emphasises the report's significance: "Anyone with an interest in policing should read it... for anybody with any sort of leadership responsibility in policing, it's compulsory."

Listen to the range of recommendations Simon both praises and baulks at. He in turn specifically provides guidance to promotion candidates, puts the report in context of the wider policing landscape, and gives food for thought for your preparation for leadership success. Fear not: the controversial subjects (e.g. 'license to practice', centralisation of policing roles, police recruitment entry routes) are also covered! I particularly also liked the turn of phrase, "intellectual horsepower isn't everything".

I once again thank Simon for delaying his train to share his time and thoughts. I believe it provides a great insight for future police leaders to hear first hand the perspective of current and former senior leaders, particularly those who remain engaged with policing after retirement. In this episode, I bring your attention to the 'golden' information held within the PEEL inspection reports, conducted by HMICS in Scotland Police and HMICFRS in England, Wales, PSNI and nationwide forces. This is something few aspiring Sergeants, Inspectors and Chief Inspectors are even aware of, but I encourage you to familiarise yourself with ASAP. I discuss examples from the Met Police and GMP, but these assessments are conducted in all forces across the UK. It is particularly pertinent now, given HMICFRS are currently conducting inspections around many forces. PEEL assessments are just one of the rich resources I signpost to in my 36-page 'Exclusive Insights' supplementary materials to my new 4 hour Video Masterclass

Welcome to podcast Season 1 Episode 18. Sorry for the wait since last time! I recorded this new episode (34 mins) in light of it being both CPD week with the College of Policing and some reflections having participated in the #WeCops discussion on CPD last night. I discuss the importance of CPD as part of your police promotion prep, while also recognising it as a key competency within the CVF.

'We Take Ownership' describes the fact it should be a given that Sergeants and the Inspecting ranks should have their own development in hand (Level 1). At Level 2, it points out the focus being taking ownership for the CPD of your teams as a leader. With your own CPD, I like to emphasise it is not just professional development, but it is also important to consider your PERSONAL development. And don't overlook the 'C': CONTINUOUS, i.e. you must always have a plan and your development never stops! Below is a free blog on CPD, part of the suite of FREE CPD materials I offer. Welcome to podcast Season 1 Episode 15. In this episode I had the privilege of interviewing Simon Foy QPM as my first podcast guest, a former Metropolitan Police Commander with a rich and varied policing career across many ranks (59 mins). Simon kindly agreed to share some of his insights, thoughts and reflections around the subject of converting UK police leadership aspiration into promotion success.

With a 30+ year police career, including leading the Metropolitan Police Homicide Command and receiving the Queens Police Medal in 2009 for distinguished service to policing, Simon kindly agreed to share his views around the topic of promotion in the police service. He provides some great tips for those aspiring to progress their careers via promotions or simply want to develop their leadership skills. In our conversation. Simon answers questions on police leadership, achieving promotions, observations on the jumps between ranks (including the biggest jump) and the value of police promotion assessments and interviews. Diversity, Equality and inclusion, learning from setbacks, and wider reflections about what it means to be a leader all feature in this podcast. I particularly liked his summary of three key points to success: Know yourself, learn from experience, and prepare properly.
