It’s really that simple.

In eras of easy credit, both creditworthy and marginal borrowers are suddenly able to borrow more. This flood of new cash seeking a return fuels red-hot demand for conventional assets considered “safe investments” (real estate, blue chip stocks and bonds), demand of which given the limited supply of “safe” assets pushes valuations of these assets to the moon.

In the euphoric atmosphere generated by easy credit and a soaring asset valuations, some of the easy credit sloshes into marginal investments (farmland that is only briefly productive if it rains enough, for example), high-risk speculative ventures based on sizzle rather than actual steak and outright frauds passed off as legitimate “sure-fire opportunities.”

The price people are willing to pay for all these assets soars as the demand created by easy credit increases. And why does credit continue increasing? The assets rising in value create more collateral, which then supports more credit.

This self-reinforcing feedback appears highly virtuous in the expansion phase: The grazing land bought to put under the plow just doubled in value, so the owners can borrow more and use the cash to expand their purchase of more grazing land.

The same mechanism is at work in every asset: homes, commercial real estate, stocks and bonds. The more the asset gains in value, the more collateral becomes available to support more credit.

Tens of thousands of protesters have rallied across the occupied territories for the 14th straight week, condemning the highly contentious "judicial reforms" proposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The biggest demonstration was held in the coastal city of Tel Aviv on Saturday, with the participants chanting slogans against the so-called overhaul plan.

Protesters brandished signs reading, "Freedom for all!" and "Netanyahu is leading us to war."

"We're still going to come here and say loud and clear that we will not let this reform pass," one protester told Reuters.

Other smaller demonstrations took place in the cities of Kfar Saba and Haifa, respectively in the central and northern parts of the occupied territories, as well as in the holy occupied city of al-Quds.

Organizers said around 258,000 people attended the protest rallies, but the regime's authorities gave no figures of their own.

Netanyahu paused the reforms last month, which were receiving rubberstamp approval in the Knesset, as the protests showed no sign of abating and were even compounded by a wave of strikes.

The changes seek to give members of the regime's extremist cabinet nearly unchecked power over the Supreme Court by enabling them to easily overrule the court's decisions.

The proposals also seek to give Netanyahu's cabinet effective control over the appointment of the Supreme Court's judges.

The RESTRICT Act (S. 686) is a proposed legislation that was first introduced in the United States Senate on March 7, 2023.

Introduced by Senator Mark Warner, the Act proposes that the Secretary of Commerce be given the power to review business transactions involving certain information and communications technologies products or services when they are connected to a "foreign adversary" of the United States, and pose an "undue and unacceptable risk" to the national security of the United States or its citizens.

Overview[edit]

The RESTRICT Act is described as "a systematic framework for addressing technology-based threats to the security and safety of Americans."[1][2] It grants the Secretary of Commerce the authority to review transactions by certain foreign entities who offer "information and communications technologies products or services" (ICTS), in order to identify, investigate, and mitigate "undue and unacceptable" risks to the national security of the United States or its citizens. This includes but is not limited to

Impact to the country's critical infrastructure and digital economy,

"Sabotage or subversion" of ICTS in the United States

Interference and manipulation of federal elections

Undermining the democratic process to "steer policy and regulatory decisions in favor of the strategic objectives of a foreign adversary to the detriment of the national security of the United States".

The Act applies to ICTS entities that are held in whole or in part by, or otherwise fall under the jurisdiction of a country or government that is designated under the Act as a "foreign adversary" of the United States, and has more than one million active users or units sold in the United States.[1][2] The initial text of the Act classifies China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Cuba, Iran, Russia, and the Nicolás Maduro regime of Venezuela as foreign adversaries.[3]

It would be unlawful for any person to violate any order or mitigation measure issued under the RESTRICT Act, with civil penalties of up to $250,000 or twice the value of the transaction that served as the basis of the order, whichever is greater, and criminal penalties of up to $1 million and up to 20 years imprisonment.

While it was not mentioned by name by its sponsors, the RESTRICT Act has been characterized as a means to potentially restrict or prohibit the Chinese-owned video sharing service TikTok from conducting business in the United States.

The bill has faced bipartisan criticism for having a lack of judicial oversight and transparency in its enforcement mechanisms,[6] and for containing wording broad and vague enough to potentially cover end-users (such as, for example, potentially criminalizing use of a VPN service or sideloading to access services blocked from doing business in the United States under the Act, due to the text stating that no person may "cause or aid, abet, counsel, command, induce, procure, permit, or approve the doing of any act" that violates orders issued under the Act).[5][4] Many individuals have compared the bill to the Patriot Act.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) expressed their opposition, arguing that the blocking of entire services violates the First Amendment rights of citizens.[6][7] In regards to its implied target, Congressman Jamaal Bowman and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) believed that the federal government should prioritize internet privacy legislation that also applies to U.S.-based companies.[6]

Dr. Angus Dalgleish, a renowned oncologist practising in the UK, recently wrote an open letter to the editor-in-chief of the medical journal The BMJ, urging the journal that harmful effects of Covid injections be “aired and debated immediately” because cancers and other diseases are rapidly progressing among “boosted” people.

The reports of innate immune suppression after mRNA for several weeks would fit, as all these patients to date have melanoma or B cell based cancers, which are very susceptible to immune control – and that is before the reports of suppressor gene suppression by mRNA in laboratory experiments.

More than a million protesters took to the streets in France on Thursday after Emmanuel Macron’s decision to force through legislation to raise the minimum pension age last week.

The government narrowly survived a no-confidence vote on Monday after invoking article 49.3 of the constitution to bypass parliament for the bill.

Two busloads of migrants were released to a non-governmental organization in Brownsville, Texas. CBP sources told Fox they are being released with notices to appear (NTA) because there are so many crossing and no more space to house them.

Migrants released with NTAs are given a court hearing for their immigration cases, which can take between four and seven years to resolve.

Officials say the Rio Grande Valley Sector — one of the busiest sectors along the border — has seen a more than 900% increase in Chinese nationals over the same time last year. Across the southern border, there were 55 encounters of Chinese nationals in February 2022; there were 1,368 in February 2023.

While plans to usher in centralized, government-controlled money are receiving some pushback in the US, the consensus in the EU seems to be in favor of introducing a central bank digital currency (CBDC), i.e., the digital euro.

And now the question is how exactly to proceed, including by determining strategic objectives.

In the eurozone – made up of the 20 (out of 27) EU members that have adopted the euro – merchants might find themselves under obligation to accept a future European Central Bank (ECB) digital currency.

This is information from a paper that eurozone finance ministers were expected to discuss on Monday. The obligation proceeds from granting the EU CBDC the same status as cash, making it a legal tender.

The paper says that this course of action would make sure that the digital euro’s network effect and distribution are increased.

Another point the paper raises for ministers to debate is if there should be exemptions, whose goal would be “balancing the principles of contractual freedom and mandatory acceptance.”

The ECB is yet to formalize a decision on issuing its CBDC, but this is expected to happen in the fall, and meanwhile, EU bureaucrats are clearly busy finalizing the proposal, including technical issues and priorities.

Last week, the European Parliamentary Financial Services Forum heard from Financial Services Commissioner Mairead McGuinness that a bill will be presented in the near future, and that the ECB is at this point looking into key design and technical questions before making the decision.

But in order for the EU’s central bank to make that decision, regulation is needed, with the European Parliament’s and the European Council’s involvement.

The proposal is expected to be submitted in the second quarter of 2023, to establish the bloc’s CBDC and regulate it, including around issues like its legal tender status, privacy and anti-money laundering, financial stability, distribution and compensation, and the use of the digital euro outside the euro area, said McGuinness.

And earlier, in January, the finance ministers considering this – collectively known as the “Eurogroup” – noted that going for an EU CBDC is a political issue that requires political decisions.

“Even if rules were violated, the problems only affected a small number of trial sites,” Pfizer is actually trying to argue, which came as something of a shock to Barnes who commented on the company’s extraordinary arrogance and “untouchable attitude.”
