148: Rebbetzin Bat Chen Grossman, love language affects organization
What do you do when your spouse is not on board with minimizing? Sure, he supports my desire to "declutter" but then he thinks to "surprise" me by ordering useless specific kitchen gadgets on Ali Express...and then it just annoys me. He's trying to be helpful but doesn't understand that the more "stuff" we have, the more stressed the house becomes.
The difference between this question and what I answered in the previous episode are that in this situation the husband, in the theoretical way is on board with his wife and decluttering in general, but keep adding to the problem - and is missing the understanding that in this case, more is just more and not better.
In order to help me answer this question I asked my friend - rebbetzin Bat - Chen grossman to join me this week to answer this question and a few more about organizing in a relationship! (and if you aren’t in a relationship - stay tuned cause I have an episode for singles coming up!)
Rebbetzin Bat-Chen Grossman is a marriage coach helping successful women improve their marriage and love their lives. She has helped hundreds of women connect on a deeper level to Hashem, themselves, and their husbands. She hosts a weekly live stream, featuring topic experts, discussing the effects of life stressors on marriage; such as money, time management, work-life balance, and health. She lives in Israel with her husband, Rabbi Avi Grossman, and their six children.

Things right now stink. It stinks to be stuck in your house. It stinks to not be with friends and family for holidays. It stinks to worry about getting sick.
When we reframe the situation and focus on gratitude, even for those of us who have it really bad, I think it is easier to cope. Focusing on the good, and not let the worry take us over is difficult in the best of times, but in stressful times it can seem downright impossible,

097: Purim Revisted
Happy Purim to everyone!

096: Organization is worth the effort
I see so many people struggling with the stuff in their lives. They know they need to get organized, but it doesn't seem like a priority since they are getting by. They manage to get up, get dressed, get the kids out the door, no one goes hungry, they just make it through another day.
It doesn't have to be like that. If you take the time now to declutter, make it a priority, and get it done, the payoff down the road is huge. You will have more time and more energy and at the end of the day you won't glad you just made it through, you will be thrilled at how much easier life has become.

095: Keep your eyes on your own paper
This week on the podcast I talk about the importance of not focusing on what other people are doing, but rather keeping your eye on your own paper, in your own book. Meaning, don't focus on what others are doing rather - only what you are doing. When you compare yourself to others it makes you forget about all the good things you can do and since you don't know what they are actually going through the comparison may not even be valid!
During these next few very busy weeks - please focus on what you can do- focus on getting what you need to get done, done. Don't focus on what other people are doing. It won't help you get to your goals and organizationally, it may even derail you.

094: Question catch up
This episode is dedicated to answering listener questions!
Most of them were about me and my family - I hope you enjoy!

093: Waste and Organization
I was working with a client in the beautiful and holy city of Jerusalem this week and I saw the trash being removed from the old city. I was shocked to see how hard the workers had to work to remove it and how much waste there was. Waste as in trash, but also as in seemingly good things that were still usable but being discarded.
It reminded me of some articles by Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon that I had read in Ha'Mizrachi Magazine a few weeks ago in their Tu B'shevat edition.
I had been wanting to share what I had read with you but wasn't sure how to tie it all in - well I figured it out and I hope it was clear.
Waste is directly related to organization. Or consuming is directly related to organization. When we consume more, we waste more or produce more waste.
We have a moral obligation to take care of the environment and our mitzvot exemplify this. When we consume more we not only hurt ourselves (digging yourself out of the mountain of stuff in your home) we hurt the earth.
I hope this episode inspires you to be more conscientious about what you buy, what you consume, and what gets wasted.

092: Routines
Routines are important but they don't have to rule your day- when you have less - you get to focus more on the people in your life and be flexible rather than focusing on your stuff and keeping it tidy.
For me - I don't have a lot of routines - I just try to take life day by day - that doesn't work for everyone, but at this stage in my life it does for me.
What works best for you? Drop me a line and let me know - and don't forget to join the Painless Pesach 45 day challenge www.rebekahsaltzman.com/pesach45

091: Holding On
Figuring out why you are holding on to things can be difficult but it is a worthwhile exercise because it helps us to move forward in the decluttering process.
Holding on to things because of fear of scarcity - worry that you won't have access to what you need and holding on to things that you store in other places, or even in your own space because they hold sentimental value isn't always the best thing to do.
Unpack your feelings - process the relationship between the items and how it makes you feel and then allow yourself to move on.

4. Respect the other people in your house - and their stuff- Respect that people let go of things at their own pace, and respect their stuff, don’t chuck other people’s stuff.
5. Set goals and assess needs together as a family - some questions you can ask to create goals:
What will our house look and feel like when we are done? What do we draw the line at? What do we agree we must keep? How many of each type of object do we really need? When you sit down together and figure out what is important to you it is a lot easier to declutter.
*BONUS*
6. Show gratitude - for the hard work and progress that people did put it - acknowledge their struggles and remind them this is a marathon not a sprint -
Let me know how these tips work for you!

085: Tara Button - Buy Me Once
Do you ever wish that everything you bought would be something that would last forever??? Even if it didn't last forever, wouldn't it be great if manufacturers stood behind their products??
My guest on the podcast today, Tara Button decided that she only wanted to buy things once so she created an online store where you could buy products that last forever- or at least a really long time.
Tara is the founder of buymeonce.com and the author of A life less Throwaway.
She has searched for products that are guaranteed to last and for companies that stand behind their products and created a website to showcase them.
We talk about her new book and how buying things one time and taking care of what we have (with a few how to tips) is better for our wallet, staying organized, and the environment.
If you need help staying organized - join Conquer Your Clutter today! Registration Ends on January 5th.

084: Setting your priorities
If decluttering is your goal - and even if it isn’t, what is holding you back from crossing the finish line and crossing your goals of you list?
Sometimes it is fear, money, or time, but even if those things are big factors priority is the umbrella they all fall under. When something is a priority, you find the money, make the time, and move past the fear so you can get it done. You cross the finish line, just like Leah- who I talk about in this week’s podcast.
If getting decluttered is important to you, and you need help doing it, get the help you need, you can work one on one with me, do CONQUER YOUR CLUTTER, get a friend to help you, or even another professional, it doesn’t have to be me, but don’t be scared to ask for help.
Sometimes you think to yourself, well I can do this myself, and I don’t need help, why should I pay someone to help me? The answer is simple, because you haven’t already done so yourself. When you hire someone to help you, they hold you accountable and force you to get things done.
So make 2019 the year you complete your resolutions - whatever they are, and get the help you need to get it done.
If you need some help- reach out, you can book a consultation with me here: or join conquer your clutter, the next class starts January 6th!

081: You can't do it all
But - if you take the time to declutter and get organized you will have a lot more time in the long run because after you declutter you will spend a lot less time dealing with your stuff, and let's be honest, stuff takes up a lot of our time.
There is no shame in saying no to things, but if you want to do them, and you don't have the time, maybe it is because you have too much stuff around.
Don't worry if you don't have the prefect bins or closet, work with what you got, in the end it will likely be OK!

079: Distractions
1: Set a limit
2. Plan you day and make it flexible
3. Get a partner
These three things will really help keep you on task when you are organizing, tackling your to do list, or just staying focused on the current task. You may need all of them for some tasks and only one for others, pick and choose what works for you... (and let me know how you do.)

078: Things that hold us back from decluttering
Identifying the problem is key, often times we know that decluttering needs to happen but we don't know where the set back is, you may think it is money, but really it is fear! You may think it is fear but maybe it is really time.
Maybe you don't really want to invest anything in decluttering, you want someone to just do it for you... of course there are people who do this, but when you do, you just a delaying the inevitable, the clutter will return.
Clutter is just a decision deferred, so don't defer any more, figure out what is holding you back and get help for it.
I am putting my money where my mouth is, book some free time with me at balaganbegone.com/book-now and book a 30 minute free session video chat with me. I will give you tips and tricks to get yourself going on decluttering and one time email support (that means you can show me some pictures of your success and I'll help you on email with the next steps) but it is only good for the first 20 people, so don't wait sign up and insert the code podcast78 after your phone number.
Don't let fear, worry, guilt, money, time, or anything hold you back from being clutter free!

077: Can you have too many books?
It spurred a conversation with my husband, who has barely used this set since we got married more than 16 years ago. Why are we keeping these? I mean they haven't been used in so long, and when my husband does learn Talmud he prefers to use a different set than the one we have, so why keep these?
So many of my clients have so many books. Books they have read and books they haven't read, and while I think books are very important, as is learning, and I read about a book a week, but I hardly ever read a book more than once, so why keep what I won't read again? Why not let someone else benefit from what I already have used, and can be used again? Why be responsible for something that I won't use again?
Think about it, when you have extra books on your shelf, they sit there collecting dust, and then you have to dust them (at least occasionally), and to me that doesn't seem like a great use of time.
I am not saying I use all the books on my shelf all the time, but at a minimum my standard is that it has to be used once a year.
I am curious, how many books are on your shelf and how many are you actually referring to or using? What is your minimum standard, or what will you make it?

076: What I learned from doing the 929 program
In case you don't know, 929 (https://www.929.org.il/lang/en/today) is how many chapters there are in all of the Tanach. (Torah, Nevim, Ketuvim.) From Sunday- Thursday you are supposed to study one chapter a day, Friday and Saturday are built in as catch up days.
I took on the obligation to do this, some days I make it, some days I don't, but, I always catch up.
This week we are up to the story of the Jews leaving Egypt, in particular the Jews receiving the Ma'an.
Of course, I studied this in school, but going at my own pace with my adult perspective on life, I saw something I never saw before, here, right in black and white, is G-d telling us, take only what you need for today, count on me, I will provide more tomorrow.
Are you wondering how this relates to organization? Well, it does, because, so much of what I see, or rather what I hear people tell me is this: "This might come in handy." or they say "I might need this in the future." or "I'm worried if I get rid of this I will need it as soon as I get rid of it.".
All of these are valid feelings. Not only that, I have seen it happen that after people purge they regret one item, or an item accidentally got mixed in and got discarded.
Even though the worry is valid, you shouldn't let it hold you back when you declutter, even if you don't believe in G-d because look around you, you have more than what you need. You have acknowledged that you already have too much.
Organization and decluttering don't have to be a sprint, they are a marathon, it took you time to get into this situation, it will take you time to get out of it, pace yourself. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, but it does need to be something.
Have a little faith in yourself, in G-d, in the universe, in Karma, whatever you believe in and see that you really do have everything you need.
It is a good idea to think about vacation, what do you pack when you go on vacation and how much do you actually use of what you have packed?
When you have too much stuff it creates extra work for you, like the client I talk about in the podcast who had a mold issue and needed to spend lots of extra time washing the clothing that was stored in the basement, and chucking out the items she bought in bulk.
What I love about 929 is that I am relearning what I had previously learned, but am seeing it anew, and I think I have a deeper understanding.
It isn't too late to join in. You can join 929 also, just start from where they are at today, doing something is better than doing nothing, just like with decluttering.

075: World Mental Health Day
I talk about the different levels of hoarding, how hoarder is used as a general term and what type of help to get at every level.
I believe there are 4 levels of hoarders -
Level 4 - Black, someone who is in danger of being trapped in their home. This is a major psychological problem, enlist the help of a trained psychiatrist!
Level 3- Red, someone who is too embarrassed to have people come into their home.
Level 2- Yellow, someone who may still be embarrassed to have people over but can manage most of their day to day needs.
Level 1 - Green, someone who just needs a little help getting to their goals.
Of course each level has gradations, but however you identify, it is important to get help. What type of help you gets depends on the level you are, but which ever level you are, PLEASE GET THE HELP YOU NEED!!!
I cannot stress this enough, there is no shame in getting help, for any type of problem. None of us are perfect, and we all need help with something.
If you need help and you fall into levels 1-3, get in touch for in home service, or check out the Conquer Your Clutter course, (rebekahsaltzman.com) which is DIY course, with one on one support from me, and a support group. We have videos, challenges, and live group calls. When you complete a challenge you get $30, there are 10 challenges, so if you do them all, you can earn $300 and have an organized home!
Regardless of if you get in touch with me or not, if you need help, please seek it. Do not be ashamed, there is no need to be!

073: Hopes for 5779 - Tragedy to Tafkid (purpose in life)
So, this week on the JTO podcast I talk about, tafkid - your mission in life, how even in times of mourning we need to be careful about waste, like when you tear your clothing as a sign of mourning, Jewish Eco Funerals, and I talk about how my friend, Ben Goldstein, inspired me with a pre-funeral video that showed the unity of the Jewish people.
I apologize for the sniffling, but I recorded this episode about 5 times before I could even get through the fist few lines with out crying.
I hope you are inspired to reach your true potential, fulfill your tafkid, and pledge to make 5779 the year you finally Conquer Your Clutter, because too much stuff distracts us and hinders our potential.
G'mar Chatima Tova-May you be sealed in the book of life.

Besides for the money she was paying directly for the storage unit there were other costs associated with storing things, like the cost of storage containers, the time we spend organizing, sorting, and packing things up for storage, and the damage we do to the things that aren't stored properly because there is too much junk around.

057: Shavout & Shmita. How matan torah teaches us to reduce
The main point of giving the Torah at Mt. Sinai was to teach the Jewish People about the Sabbatical Year, shmita. But what does the year of rest have to do with giving the Torah, well, it teaches us that during that year, the land reverts back to G-d for a rest, and it shows us we don't really own the land. Just as we don't really only the land, can we every really own our things, or do they own us? Since we can't take it with us, we should reduce now, allowing us to truly enjoy what we have!
