Click here to read a transcript of this episode
Join Howard S. Veisz, a dedicated volunteer in the Watercraft Department at the Mystic Seaport Museum since 2009, as he shares the story of Henny Sinding Sundø and Gerda III, the boat Henny used to save Jewish lives during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. Veisz's book, Henny and Her Boat, provides a fresh perspective on the Danes' defense of their Jewish countrymen during years of Nazi occupation and, ultimately, their heroic rescue of the Danish Jews on a fleet of fishing boats and other small craft.
This podcast is presented in collaboration with the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center Baxt Lecture Series, an annual event that brings Holocaust education to the greater Rhode Island community.
--
In 2009 Howard S. Veisz left a litigation career and went to sea. After a two-year sailing voyage around the North Atlantic, Howard and his wife settled on Connecticut’s Mystic River, and Howard began work as a shipyard volunteer at the Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum. Howard worked in the rigging shop for a massive project: restoring Mystic’s 1841 whaling ship, the Charles W. Morgan, and getting it under sail for the first time in 93 years. As the whaling ship project wound down, Howard’s interest in Gerda III, also docked at Mystic Seaport Museum, arose.
With a father and grandparents who barely escaped Nazi Germany, Gerda III’s role in rescuing Denmark’s Jews drew Howard in. While helping to preserve Gerda III, Howard began a four-year mission to reconstruct its history. Howard traveled to Denmark to locate and interview descendants of the people who carried out Gerda III’s rescue missions; scoured Danish archives; visited the docks from which Gerda III set out; gathered accounts by leaders of the Gerda III rescue group that had never appeared in English; and assembled translators to uncover the fascinating story that had been buried in those writings for over seventy years.

For this week's episode of Rhody Radio, we're bringing you a presentation by Michael Fine, M.D., who joined the Cranston Public Library on January 11, 2022, to read from his newest book, Rhode Island Stories. This collection of short stories provides marvelous insight into some very unique personalities and situations in our home state. You can purchase Rhode Island Stories at Dr. Fine's website - michaelfinemd.com - or request it from your local Ocean State Library.
Thanks for listening! Please rate and review Rhody Radio wherever you get podcasts, and if you enjoyed this episode we’d be honored if you would share it with a friend. Theme music for this episode is Inner City Smiling by John Bartmann. Rhody Radio is proud to be a resident partner of the Rhode Island Center for the Book and is brought to you by library staff and community members all around the Ocean State.
Michael Fine, M.D. has been an advocate for communities, healthcare reform, and the care of under-served populations worldwide for 40 years. His career as a community organizer and family physician has led him to some of the poorest places in the United States, as well as dangerous, war-ravaged communities in developing countries. His experiences across the globe have enabled him to craft numerous short stories, novels and healthcare policy books about how we can change the world by empowering, caring for, and educating one another.
“Literature and imagination can build a better world. Imagination can help us see one another and envision what we can do together when we stop fighting and start dreaming,” says Fine. “I don’t think I know anything that other people haven't known for years. I just think of myself as a man who is too stubborn to accept the world as it is, and too pigheaded to accept no for an answer when someone asks if there is a better way."

He has worked in criminal justice, the tech industry, and immigration law, and prays every day for a new album from System of a Down.
ABOUT THE BOOK Rooted in foundational loss and the hope that can live in anger, “Riot Baby” is both a global dystopian narrative and intimate family story with quietly devastating things to say about love, fury, and the black American experience. Ella and Kev are brother and sister, both gifted with extraordinary power. Their childhoods are defined and destroyed by structural racism and brutality. Their futures might alter the world. When Kev is incarcerated for the crime of being a young black man in America, Ella―through visits both mundane and supernatural―tries to show him the way to a revolution that could burn it all down.

Go Inside a Clock Tower with the Clock Man
Go Inside a Clock Tower with the Clock Man
Read a transcript of this episode.
The "Clock Man,” a.k.a. Philip D’Avanza, is standing outside of 404 Market Street in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, and is about to take a step inside the town's clock tower housed in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. The movement on this 125-year-old tower clock was taken apart, piece-by-piece in October 2020, and driven 450 miles to the Clock Man’s workshop in New Hampshire. Over the course of nine months, he repaired and refinished every part, restoring the clock to its original late nineteenth-century condition.

Jane Walker is living her dream as a shuttle driver at Roger Williams University (RWU) in Bristol, Rhode Island. West Warwick Librarians Amber Bliss and Rashaa Al-Sasah sat down with Rhody Radio to share about the project!
To read Voices of the Lost Year visit the West Warwick Public Library's website which has links to all the eBook platforms where you can download the book for free. As the pandemic continues to keep us away from our favorite restaurant dining rooms and rooted in our kitchens, there’s one thing a curious cook might want to know. What are people cooking at home in Rhode Island?
To begin answering this question, we start with a local business that provides the raw materials for the makings of some of our favorite seafood meals. “Cookbook Librarian,” Jessica D’Avanza chats with Fearless Fish owner, Stu Meltzer about running a business during a pandemic, becoming a father, seafood trends, and cookbook suggestions for the busy home cook.
- Find the daily catch and order online at fearlessfishmarket.com.
- While there, check out information on their Fish Share, with pickup locations around the state.

PCL Reads: An Interview with Author Tochi Onyebuchi
PCL Reads: An Interview with Author Tochi Onyebuchi
Tochi Onyebuchi joined the Providence Community Library as part of their PCL Reads series on Wednesday, February 10th to discuss Riot Baby, a companion read for the 2021 Reading Across Rhode Island program. Co-hosted virtually by Amy VanderWeele at South Providence Library and Rhode Island Center for the Book, the conversation was moderated by Jonathan Pitts-Wiley, the Artistic Director of Mixed Magic Theatre (MMT) in Pawtucket. To watch a recording of the interview, visit the Providence Community Library Youtube Page.
Find Riot Baby at your local library, as an ebook through RI's eZone, or contact Amy Vanderweele at the South Providence Library for multiple copies for a book club.
The music in this episode is Soft Inspiration by Scott Holmes.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tochi Onyebuchi is the author of Beasts Made of Night, its sequel Crown of Thunder, War Girls, and his adult fiction debut “Riot Baby,” published by Tor.com in January 2020. He has graduated from Yale University, New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Columbia Law School, and L’institut d’études politiques with a Masters degree in Global Business Law. His short fiction has appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction, Omenana, BLACK ENOUGH: STORIES OF BEING YOUNG & BLACK IN AMERICA, and elsewhere. His non-fiction has appeared in Uncanny Magazine, Nowhere Magazine, Tor.com and the Harvard Journal of African-American Public Policy. He is the winner of the Ilube Nommo Award for Best Speculative Fiction Novel by an African and has appeared in Locus Magazine's Recommended Reading list.
Born in Massachusetts and raised in Connecticut, Tochi is a consummate New Englander, preferring the way the tree leaves turn the color of fire on I-84 to mosquitoes and being able to boil eggs on pavement.

Writing Wild at Teatime with NYT Bestselling Author Kathryn Aalto
Writing Wild at Teatime with NYT Bestselling Author Kathryn Aalto
Take a socially-distant walk up Scafell Pike — England’s tallest mountain — with writer, historian, teacher, and landscape designer, Kathryn Aalto. Our episode begins with Aalto reading her opening essay on Dorothy Wordsworth from her new book, Writing Wild: Women Poets, Ramblers, and Mavericks Who Shape How We See the Natural World (Timber Press, June 2020). Aalto then joins us for teatime from her home in Devon, England to share insights into what inspired her to write the book, the research process, and the women she selected to be profiled in the book. From Mary Oliver to Elizabeth Rush, she sheds new light on women’s evolving role in the canon of nature writers.
Book Summary:
Who are the pioneering and imaginative women who dared … to take simple walks without the chaperone of men? To pick up a pen and write under their own names? To record their protests, poetry, and prose? To change history? In Writing Wild, Kathryn Aalto lyrically profiles 25 women, both historical and current, whose influential nature writing has deepened our connection to and understanding of the natural world.
Part travel essay, literary biography, and cultural history Writing Wild ventures into the landscapes and lives of extraordinary writers and encourages a new generation of women to pick up their pens, head outdoors, and start writing wild.
About the Author:
In addition to Writing Wild, Aalto is the author of The New York Times bestseller, The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh: A Walk Through the Forest that Inspired the Hundred Acre Wood (2015) and Nature and Human Intervention (2011). Her essays have appeared in Smithsonian Magazine, Outside, Sierra, Buzzfeed, Resurgence, the Ecologist, and more. She is currently working on her fourth book. We will also hear from a few board members of the Trust to learn a bit about what they do to conserve open space in town and how you can enjoy a land trust property near you. Discover your RI land trust through the RI Land Trust Council's website.
A StoryWalk® is an innovative way to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Laminated pages from a children's book are attached to signposts along this one-mile loop trail where you can walk along this woodland path and read The Belonging Tree by Maryann Cocca-Leffler.
StoryWalks® were created in 2007 by Anne Ferguson in Montpelier, Vermont and have been installed in all 50 states and 12 countries.
