Ep. 21 - Sara Vaughn: Boston Marathon Recap
Unfortunately for Sara Vaughn, the 2023 Boston Marathon didn't playout anywhere close to how she imagined it going. Sara decided to step off the course around mile 15 and that is where her race ended. In this episode, Sara provides of a full analysis of what went wrong, her thought process during the race, and how she is handling the disappointment that comes with a DNF.

Ep. 20 - Dani Moreno: Road Marathon Debut at Boston and Narrowly Missing an OTQ
In our latest Boston Marathon recap, we hear from Dani Moreno. This race wasn't merely a chance to experience Boston, this was Dani's first road marathon and a full-fledged attempt to break 2:37 and grab an Olympic Trials qualifying time. That's a lot to handle but Dani was ready. As one of the best sub-ultra trail runners in the world, she spoke about the atmosphere at Boston and how it compares to UTMB and the world's best trail scenes. Dani takes us through the race as she set herself up for a time in the mid-2:30's and what happened when it started to slip away at mile 24 before she finished in 2:38:23.

Ep. 19 - Nell Rojas: Boston Marathon Recap
At last week's Boston Marathon, Nell Rojas went up against some of the world's best after a less-than-ideal build and did her thing. Nell ran a 2:24:51, a personal best, which was good for 14th overall and 3rd American. Two weeks before Boston, Nell finished 3rd at Cherry Blossom 10 Miler (USATF Championship). In this episode we detail the training that led to these performances as well as the race tactics and details that defined them. Nell displays her trademark candor and good humor in describing all of it!

Ep. 18 - Nico Montañez: Boston Marathon Recap
Nico Montañez finished the Boston Marathon in a time of 2:10:52 which was good for 13th overall and the 5th American. A fantastic finish that left Nico wanting more. In this episode he details nearly every mile of the race, the moves that were made, who he ran with, gaps in the second group, and what he thought may have limited his performance in the final miles.

Ep. 17 - CJ Albertson: Boston Marathon Recap
Our first Boston Marathon recap starts with CJ Albertson. CJ ran a gutsy race that proved to far more impactful that his 12th place overall finish (4th American).
We dive into all of it while talking at length about his well-crafted IG post detailing his experience:
"2:10:33- 12th place at the Boston Marathon
On paper, a mediocre result. With analysis, a poor result- with a 62:20 1st half split, then fading hard for a 68:13 2nd half.
But this race was special. For awhile now, it’s been difficult to enjoy running or really anything in life- and I’ve had this feeling that I’m not exactly myself- like my life and personality has been filtered in grayscale. This weekend in Boston was full of vibrant color. Running 15 miles with the world’s best marathoners, far faster than I’ve ever ran before- felt right, and I felt like me. It’s hard to describe, but the genuine joy, peace, and fun I experienced during the race hit me in a way that I could only interpret as “this is who I am”.
Yesterday, I wasn’t fit enough to race a full 26.2 with the world’s best- and many would say I should’ve ran the first half slower (including me before the race). Analytically, they are correct. But I was rewarded anyway. I was reminded of who I am, the greatness I was created for (not just in running), and the joy of running and life.
We all have greatness within us. We may not have achieved it yet, haven’t mastered the habits/discipline necessary to get there, and sometimes may not even feel it’s true- but it’s still who we are. Time to live it out."

Ep. 16 - CJ Albertson: Boston Marathon Preview
Our final Boston Marathon preview episode before race day is with CJ Albertson. This will be CJ's third Boston after clocking a 2:11 and a 2:10 in 2021 and 2022. In this episode CJ details his atypical 6-8 week build, his feelings on racing/race strategy, his detailed thoughts on tapering (or lack thereof) including a somewhat spicy 21 mile run on Monday, and his thoughts on using ketone esters in training and on race day.

Ep. 15 - Nico Montañez: Boston Marathon Preview
Nico Montañez is back on the show to give us a full preview of the upcoming Boston Marathon. First we dive into his 2022 experience that left Nico, who was as fit as he'd ever been, navigating emergency dental surgery and running on antibiotics. Then Nico details his training over the past six weeks, how he is approaching race day strategy and tactics, and his favorite pre-race movie. Oh, and of course we talk about his all new mustache.

Ep. 14 - Dani Moreno: Boston Marathon Preview
Our Boston Marathon previews continue with Dani Moreno. Dani, one of the top sub-ultra trail runners in the world, is gearing up for Boston in a way that is truly unique. Not only is a road marathon not her forte, but her home of Mammoth Lakes, CA has had historic snowfall that pushed nearly all of her running onto the treadmill. Despite the atypical build, Dani nearly nabbed an OTQ time at the Ventura Half Marathon several weeks ago.
In this episode she details her recent training, her spectacular race at Ventura, her strategy for Boston, and her race weekend logistics. Finally, Dani talks about her new podcast, Sub Hub, that you can find on your favorite podcast provider.

Ep. 13 - Sara Vaughn: Boston Marathon Preview
The Boston Marathon is around the corner and we are kicking off our preview episodes with Sara Vaughn. Sara details what types of training she prioritized in over the last two months, non-running challenges she's had to work through, her pre-race logistics and mindset, and her difficulty choosing a race day shoe (two great options that can't decide between!).

Ep. 12 - Jereny Rivera: Shorter Races and Long-Term Planning
Jereny is back on the show for her second appearance this season. Since her first episode, and running 2:47 at the Houston Marathon, she has done some shorter races in the Orlando area. In this episode, Jereny continues to share her open and honest feelings about her training, how she approaches it mentally, and how she reacts during a race when things aren't going well. Jereny also open us about what this process means to her in the short term and long term. Finally, Jereny discusses what changes she is making to her marathon racing schedule and why.

In our second conversation with Nico Montañez, Nico shares an amazing amount about training and racing. First, Nico does a nearly 30 minute breakdown of his recent training heading into the United Airlines NYC Half and the upcoming Boston Marathon. In the second half of the podcast Nico discusses his 7th place performance, and 2nd U.S. finisher, at the stacked United Airlines NYC Half. It was a freezing day in which Nico ran well against some of the world's best. It was a clear sign that his fitness is trending well for Boston. Finally, we end with a little shoe talk and Nico shares which Asics shoes he uses for various runs and races.

Ep. 10 - Carmen Graves: Top 10 at USATF 15k Champs and African-American Distance Running Representation
In our second episode with Carmen Graves she details a recent breakout performance - top 10 at Gate River/USATF 15k Championships. As always, the field was loaded with stud endurance athletes. As Carmen said afterwards, "I think I’m officially a long distance runner now." Carmen details this important race, the strategy she used, and the training that led to this breakout performance. In the second half of the episode Carmen details her thoughts on only 3% of American distance runners being African-American the lack of those runners who have broken 3:00 hours in the marathon. This is a subject that Carmen is passionate about and it was an honor to hear her perspective.

Ep. 9 - CJ Albertson
In our last intro episode of Season 3 we meet with CJ Albertson. CJ is simultaneously one of the best marathoners in the United States and one of the most interesting. He finished 7th at the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials and has run exceptionally well at several marathons since then, including a 2:10 at Boston. CJ has also set the 50k world record twice, most recently last fall. In this episode, CJ talks about where running fits into his life, he gets up for races while working hard to develop that same mojo for training, his life as a college coach, and how he views 2023 in preparation for the 2024 trials. I really appreciate CJ's candor in this episode. He shares his feelings in a way that is unique for professional athletes in running and any other high-level sport.

Ep. 8 - Dani Moreno
Dani Moreno is a professional trail runner for adidas living in Mammoth Lake, CA. Over the last couple of years, Dani has established herself as one of the best shorter distance and sub-ultra trail runners in the world. Carmen Graves began distance running after becoming a 5 time All-American in the 800m at Roanoke College where she also played soccer. After college she decided to opted to pursue pro running. She found the 3k steeplechase which tested her endurance, speed, and athletic abilities.
Like many elite runners, Carmen prioritizes her training outside of long work hours. She works in the non-profit sector as a Program Advisor for the Center of Work Education and Employment, coaches horizontal jumps at Englewood High School, and is the meet director for the Denver Twilight Mile.
Despite a full schedule, she is training hard, competing regularly in bigger track events, and has her sights set on some big goals: making the US team in steeplechase and qualifying again for the Olympic Trials in 2024.

Ep. 5 - Jereny Rivera
Jereny started running in 2015 and ran her first marathon in 5 hours and 25 minutes. Since then, she's lost over 50 lbs. and knocked 2.5+ hours off her time. Last month she ran a 2:47 in Houston and she has been smashing several shorter races in-and-around her local Orlando running scene. Jereny is in a similar position to where Stefanie Flippin was in season one - her big stretch goal is to qualify for the trials. An enormous feet and one that will require all of Jereny's considerable will and drive. In this episode Jereny details why this goal is so important for her, how she intends to give herself a chance to reach it, and why she is excited to share the entire process in a public way. Most of all, this episode really show's Jereny's incredible intelligence, will to succeed, and openness that will be a joy to follow over the next year.
You can learn more about Jereny's back story in episodes 276 and 417 of the Rambling Runner Podcast.

Ep. 4 - Sara Vaughn
Sara Vaughn started her elite running career as a middle distance track star before turning to the marathon in 2021. In addition to being one of America's best runners she is a mom of four and a full-time realtor. She ran her third marathon this past fall at the Chicago Marathon where she placed 7th in a time of 2:26:23.
We will be following Sara over the next year as she prepares for the Boston Marathon and a full-time track season.
As busy as Sara's life is, she has taken on a new and impactful venture. Sara and her husband just launched the Vaughn Childcare Fund to provide support for parenting undergraduate student-athletes. One of the big parts of Sara’s story is that she had her first baby while she was a junior in college as a student-athlete. She did not have a lot of resources herself so she has made it her mission to help provide people in similar situations with resources. As the NCAA slowly adapts to include parents in their mission of education, inclusiveness, and well-being, they are still a highly underserved population. The Vaughn Childcare Fund is going to help to fill that gap with financial support for childcare, mentorship, policy writing, and policy adoption.

Ep. 27 - Olivia Baker: Road to the Trials Recap
Our Road to the Trials recaps continue with the extraordinary Olivia Baker.
Olivia didn't have the lead-up to the Trials that she had hoped for but was holding out hope that it would all come together in Eugene. The women's 800m was maybe the deepest event at the entire meet and it was amazing to witness each round. Unfortunately, Olivia was unable to make the final after running well in a stacked opening heat.
After the Trials Olivia stayed in racing condition and finished second at a loaded 800m race last week. This result has led to a series of decisions that Olivia must make in the coming days as she weighs her professional running future and a career in medicine. She shares her thought process about everything that has happened over the past six months and how she will make her next huge decision.

First up - Frank Lara. Frank competed in the 10k gunning for top three and the Olympic standard. It was a daring run and one that showed the grit and toughness for which Frank is known.
Since the Trials, Frank has stayed in top form. He just got runner-up in a stacked field at the Bix 7 Miler. An effort that showed, once again, that Frank Lara is just getting started and will be a force in American running for years to come.

At the beginning of 2021 Abe Alvarado spoke about the importance of peaking at the right time. He and his Atlanta Track Club coaches were planning so that at the end of June he'd be ready to roll. Kudos to them as that is exactly what has happened. Abe is now on his way to Eugene with fantastic recent results in both the 800m and 1500m. In this episode, Abe talks about how he is feeling going into the Trials, his raceday routine, his mindset at the starting line, and how excited he is race both the 800m and 1500m.

Ep. 24 - Olivia Baker: Bouncing Back and Preparing for the Trials
The Olympic Track Trials start this week and Olivia Baker is ready! In her final episode before she races the 800m in Eugene, Olivia talks about the last two races she participated in, how she is feeling, and what she is doing to prepare for race day. At the Platinum PT track meet in Massachusetts, Olivia was startled to discover that she simply didn't have her legs with 250 meters to go. She fell off the lead and finished way back from the leaders. With the Trials only four weeks away she leaned heavily on her support network. That group helped remind her that she's Olivia Freaking Baker and that she has put in the work to compete with the best.

Ep. 23 - Keira D'Amato and a Dream Deferred
Sometimes the road to the Olympic Trials takes a detour and that is exactly what has happened for Keira D'Amato. Keira, one of the favorites in the 10k at the start of 2021, has been battling a hamstring injury for a few months. That injury seemed to be a minor hiccup - until it wasn't. Ultimately, it simply wouldn't allow Keira to do the hard training necessary to compete at the highest level.
In this episode Keira opens us about injury, her thought process over the last six weeks, what it feels like to have a dream taken away when it felt so close, her vision for the future, and so much more.

After months of training Dana Giordano is now fully in race mode. Over the last couple of weeks she has competed at the Track Meet - Sound Running, NYC Qualifier - Trials of Miles, and the Adidas Boost Boston Games. Those events meant racing the 5k, 1500m, and the road mile respectively.
In this episode, Dana provides an open and honest analysis of each race and puts each on into the larger mosaic of her season and what she learned from those experiences.

Ep. 20 - Olivia Baker Gets Her OTQ
Olivia Baker is back on the show with some exciting news to discuss. Two week ago she qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 800m with a 2:01:38 at the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays! Her heat was absolutely loaded with talent (Kate Grace, Brenda Martinez, Ellie Baker, Rebecca Mehra, among others) and Olivia ran incredibly well. With that said, and as we discuss in this episode, as excited as she is for her trials qualifying time she is eager and ready for more with three more tune-up races before heading to Eugene.

Ep. 19 - Tyler Day Forced to Bow Out
Tyler returns to the show to share some unfortunate news. I'll quote him from his recent Instagram post:
"It's been a struggle trying to be a professional runner. Being able to only do two races and get sidelined for most of my rookie campaign, I wanted to bounce back in a big way from my injury and actually feel like a professional runner. Sadly, my struggles are continuing and I had to make the tough decision to end my season and ending my journey to this year's Olympic Trials.
This was not an easy decision, but knowing I am early in this professional life, I want to get to the bottom of this injury and not prolong it any further. I'm bummed and frustrated that I have to deal with this injury when I was lucky enough to be healthy for my whole running career up to this point. But, this is part of my profession. Everyone has to deal with injuries at some point and so will I. Thank you for all the support."
We talk all about the process that led to this decision, what his injury prognosis/diagnosis looks like moving forward, and a variety of other random topics that always come-up when Tyler and I get to talking.

Dana takes us through what the trip to altitude is like, how it has/hasn't affected her training, and how she is preparing for the 5k. Ep. 16 - Abe Alvarado: Drake Relays Recap
Abe Alvarado is back with a full recap of his race experience at the Drake Relays. Abe competed in the USATF Road Mile Championship and the 1500m. Abe continues to improve week-after-week and these races, against some stiff competition, were no exception.
In the road mile Abe was able to stay back during Jeff Theis's strong push from the gun. Once the field entered the stadium he used a big push over the final 300 meters to finish fourth in 4:00.40, holding off a late charge from Daniel Herrera.
In the 1500m Abe ran in the top three (minus the pacer) for almost the entire race and crossed the line just steps behind winner Clayton Murphy finishing third in a time of 3:39.70. You can watch the race here:

Yet, when race-day came, Jared did not have the race he envisioned earning a 27th place finish. In this episode, Jared displays extraordinary candor and introspection in detailing exactly what happened in Atlanta physically, mentally, and emotionally as well as what the future holds.

Ep. 41 - John Raneri
What a year and a half it’s been for John Raneri. A PR in every distance from the mile to the marathon that he recently topped-off with one of the best half marathons in U.S. history. John arrived at the Aramco Houston Half Marathon with a plan to compete and break 62 minutes - and he did just that. The results of the race were incredible. 29 men overall, and 14 American men, dipped under 62 minutes. John clocked a 1:01:51 to finish as the 11th American. Not only that, his performance as good for 34th all-time. John also makes a big, and surprise, announcement about his spring plans.

Ep. 40 - Neely Spence Gracey
Neely Spence Gracey is back! Neely ran 2:44:03 at the Houston Marathon to qualify for her third Olympic Trials. This was her first race since she gave birth to her son Athens over a year ago. It’s been a long way back for Neely, who was one of the best runners in the U.S. from 2015-17. In this episode, Neely displays her typical candor in discussing the injuries and hurdles she overcame to get to Houston, how her mentality changed after breaking her leg last summer, and how she approached Houston with an atypical build-up.

Ep. 39 - Jared Ward
On Saturday morning at the Houston Marathon expo I was an fortunate to record a live show with Jared Ward. He was his typical energetic and expansive self, making this conversation an immediate hit with everyone in attendance. Our topic was “Preparing for a Goal Race” and Jared discussed the physical, mental, and emotional sides of his prep. He was generous with his wide-ranging examples, and deep insight, that runners of all abilities can learn from.

Ep. 38 - Jennifer Hughes
Jennifer Hughes is on a mission. A mission to OTQ. At the 2019 Houston Marathon her journey began as she ran a disappointing 2:51. Her quest them took her to the Chicago Marathon then the California International Marathon, where she ran a heart-breaking 2:45:28. Just 28 seconds off her goal! This 41 year old mother of four has one final chance, and it’s back where it all started, at the Houston Marathon this Sunday. Learn all about this amazing woman and her never-say-die spirit.

Ep. 37 - Katrina Spratford
What a year 2019 was for Katrina Spratford. Katrina, who had specialized in cross-country after college, battled injuries throughout, and preceding, the build-up to her marathon debut at the California International Marathon. She fought through them all to make it to the starting line only to face a new set of challenges. Ultimately, she reached her goal of an OTQ with a hard-fought 2:44:16.

Ep. 36 - Ann Mazur a.k.a RunnersLoveYoga
Ann Mazur just capped a decade of non-traditional training by qualifying for the Olympic Trials at the California International Marathon with a time of 2:44:45.
Ann had a successful college running career at Notre Dame where she teamed up with Molly Huddle. That is also when she started to dabble in yoga. Ann started to become a devoted yoga practitioner while in grad school at the University of Virginia and her athletic and professional life was changed forever. She has adopted a “run less, yoga more” approach and she has never been faster.
You can learn more about that approach by watching her Ted Talk: https://youtu.be/YZ7tx1YB35o.

Ep. 35 - Meriah Earle
From collegiate runner, to non-runner, to the podium at the California International Marathon as a masters runner. Meriah Earle ran a 2:34:35 am to finish third at CIM and she is just getting started. She went into the race hoping to get an OTQ. It turns out, she was ready for much, much more. Meriah‘s resurgence isn’t nearly amazing in her own right, but shows what so many people are capable of doing even if they haven’t followed a linear path to their goals.

Ep. 34 - C.J. Albertson
Last weekend C.J. Albertson finished in a close second place at the California International Marathon with a personal best 2:13:40 - a mere four seconds behind Elisha Barno. C.J. has had a remarkable year including setting the world record in the indoor marathon and a mammoth training sessions (including a 30 mile training run three weeks before CIM where he averaged 5:15 per mile) all at a relatively young age for a marathoner. In a very short period of time, Albertson has elevated himself to the near top of the U.S. marathon field and has done so in an untraditional manner.

Ep. 33 - Peter Bromka
I’ve recorded nearly 300 podcasts in my life and this episode with Peter Bromka was the most emotional and insightful one that I’ve ever done. Peter just ran 2:19:02 at the California International Marathon to nearly miss the Olympic Trials qualifying standard. That heartbreaking fact does not come close to telling the whole story. Peter is not only an excellent runner but also a fantastic writer who has put out wonderful pieces on the sport. Over the last couple years he has accrued a following of people who appreciate his work and see themselves in his attempt to achieve an Olympic Trials qualifying effort. In this episode, Peter shares his journey, his feelings before, during, and after the race, and how he views the process of dedicating yourself to a goal while managing a business and family life.
You can learn more about Peter and read his work at https://www.peterbromka.com.

She quickly rose to the top of the sport with wonderful performances in cross country and on the roads. After a fabulous marathon debut and second performance, Laura was beset by injuries. In this episode Jared details his training, how he executed on race day, plans for winter training, and his BYU Cougars winning the NCAA men’s cross country championship.

Ep. 30 - Kellyn Taylor
It was great to catch-up with Kellyn Taylor after her recent performance at the TCS NYC Marathon. This was the fifth fastest time by an American in NYC Marathon history. In this episode, we talk about her great race, how it didn’t quite match her pre-race expectations, and her epic training block leading into the race.

Despite the conditions, she achieved a huge PR and an even better perspective on her effort and how far she’s come.
