International debate on the war in Ukraine, w/ RISE, Tempest, Anticapitalistas & MES/PSOL

International debate on the war in Ukraine, w/ RISE, Tempest, Anticapitalistas & MES/PSOL

The war in Ukraine has sparked intense discussion and debate among socialists and Marxists worldwide about how to understand and respond to this war. Should socialists support or oppose NATO governments sending weapons and military aid to the Ukrainian government? What is an internationalist and socialist strategy to avoid a catastrophic nuclear conflict, end this war, and defend the interests of the working class and the democratic right to self determination?  To facilitate this debate, MORE organised a roundtable discussion with representatives of other socialist groupings. Marxists internationally have generally taken two different perspectives. While there is general agreement that this war involves questions of self-determination of Ukraine Russian imperialism,  and Western imperialism, there has been significant disagreements about what conclusions should be drawn. Some argue that socialists around the globe should support the struggle for self-determination of Ukraine and therefore support military aid by the US and other Western countries; others argue that in this inter-imperialist proxy war socialists, for example in the US, have to oppose Biden's billions in military aid to the pro-capitalist, pro-NATO Zelensky government. Based on mutual respect for the different opinions of Marxists, this debate had representatives of both sides with the aim of clarifying the issues and contributing to a better Marxist understanding of the challenges involved. The special feature of this issue is on 'Carnival of Reaction' looking at the partition of Ireland and it's impacts on the centenary of the formation of the Irish Free State. The liberating influence of the Transitional Programme - Audiobook

The liberating influence of the Transitional Programme - Audiobook

This week's episode is slightly different - we recorded an audiobook version of an old talk from revolutionary Marxist theoretician George Breitman. This is an excerpt from a whole series of talks Breitman delivered in 1975 looking at the method behind the so-called 'Transitional Programme', which Trotsky advocated for in the 1930s as a way to link the day-to-day struggles we are involved in, to the need for a socialist transformation of society. Breitman demonstrates how the 'transitional method' transformed the understanding and approach of himself and other socialists, how it helped to clarify the difference between tactics and principles, and how socialists should relate to liberal illusions working class may have. It is an old talk, but a favourite, and definitely one very relevant to socialists today. Check out the full talk, and two more as part of the series, available here: https://www.marxists.org/history/etol/document/swp-us/idb/swp-1970-76-db/v33n05-jun-1975-disc-bul.pdf Read more about the transitional method in this article from the latest issue of rupture: https://rupture.ie/articles/whats-the-point-of-a-transitional-programme More about George Breitman: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Breitman --- Rupture Issue 8 has launched - being shipped out shortly! Bonus: The case for eco-socialist degrowth - meeting recording

Bonus: The case for eco-socialist degrowth - meeting recording

This week we have a bonus episode - a recording from a live public meeting Rupture organised with RISE on the case for eco-socialist degrowth. Capitalist growth is destroying our life support systems. Every single year the material taken from the Earth to feed the insatiable capitalist appetite for profits grows larger and larger and the waste spewing into the atmosphere, land, rivers, and sea grows bigger and bigger. The latest IPCC reports make clear that we have "a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all". However, climate action has to be more than “saving the environment” and ensuring a safe future. It also must ensure we’re building a different society that delivers a better life for all, in particular for all those most impacted by poverty, deprivation, and insecure conditions. In this meeting, we discuss the case for eco-socialist degrowth, which is “a planned downscaling of energy and resource use to bring the economy back into balance with the living world in a safe, just and equitable way." SPEAKERS Stefania Barca - Distinguished Researcher "Beatriz Galindo", University of Santiago de Compostela (ES); and the author of many books and articles including 'The Labor(s) of Degrowth', Forces of Reproduction and Towards a Political Economy of Degrowth Paul Murphy - TD for the eco-socialist party People Before Profit and a member of the revolutionary socialist network, RISE; and regular contributor to Rupture Magazine and Rupture Radio podcast and co-author of 'The necessity of ecosocialist degrowth'.

War on Neutrality - the Marxist case for defending Irish Neutrality

War on Neutrality - the Marxist case for defending Irish Neutrality

This week Cian sits down with Rupture regular Diana O'Dwyer to discuss the government's war on neutrality, and the Marxist case for defending it. Diana recently helped write the PBP Neutrality Bill which would have enshrined neutrality in the constitution and barred the government from joining NATO or other military alliances. It was narrowly defeated in the Dail, after the Greens broke with their previous position and voted it down. We talk about why we  socialists must oppose the attempts to present NATO as some sort of peace force, and why we should defend the idea of Irish Neutrality, and push for a consistent anti-imperialist, anti-war approach. Don't Look Up (or how not to save the world)

A special episode this week where Cian gets to sit down with Meg Morrigan and Kiran Emrich to discuss and debate the Netflix sensation Don't Look Up. The panel debate if this is this an excellent film, inspired by Bertolt Brecht and dialectical materialism? Or is it just an overly-long, over-the-top, hard to watch non-comedy?  Meg is a socialist activist with a background in film and theatre and wrote a positive review of the film for 'Reform & Revolution', a US sister publication to Rupture. However Kiran, PBP activist from Galway, is not so convinced by the film, leading to some interesting exchanges. 2021 Wrapped by Rupture w/ Paul Murphy & Conor Reddy

"There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen" as Lenin said. Well, there's also years that feel like a lifetime, and 2021 was one. In an act of collective therapy, we have an in-person panel discussion reviewing the year and more generally looking over lessons we can draw from the past 21 months of Covid. Paul Murphy drops in once more, and we are also joined by special guest Conor Reddy. We talk about the changing world of Irish politics, the never-ending nightmare of Covid and the first throws of the 'Great Bo Burnham Faction Fight of 2022' are recorded for posterity. We also cast our eyes forward to what next year can hold, challenges and opportunities for the left, and we even give some Christmas present ideas for the red in your bed (or otherwise in your life). Thanks to Connolly Books for letting us record in their bookshop in Temple Bar, we hope to be back in the future for full live shows. -- Rupture Radio is a weekly podcast looking at news, politics and culture from a socialist perspective. ATR - Driving a Just Transition? w/ Owen McCormack

ATR - Driving a Just Transition? w/ Owen McCormack

Last week, bus Drivers rejected proposals jointly agreed by the transport unions and Dublin Bus by a margin of nearly 98%. These proposals would have dramatically altered their working conditions for the worse and would have led to further precarity in the sector. Public Transport is a massive issue at the moment when it comes to climate change and the need to transform society in an ecosocialist direction. However, instead of prioritising a just transition for workers employers continue to drive down working conditions and move towards further privatisation. This week Diarmuid sits down with Bus Driver and SIPTU member Owen McCormack to discuss this dispute and its implications.  - Rupture Radio is a weekly podcast looking at news, politics and culture from a socialist perspective. ATR - The Deepening Housing Crisis w/ Des Hennelly

Since the 1970s, financial markets and corporations have increasingly enjoyed an unparalleled dominance in the housing sector internationally. This week, Michael sits down with Des Hennelly to talk about his article in the latest issue of Rupture on the commodification and financialisation of housing in Ireland. The mass murders and disappearances of suspected communists in Indonesia in the mid-1960s became the blueprint for smashing the potential of socialists gaining power in countries across the Third World during the Cold War, ensuring the maintenance of American capitalist hegemony. This week, Rupture's Michael Coleman and People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy sit down with journalist Vincent Bevins to discuss his recent book, the Jakarta Method, which dissects the Indonesian mass killings of 1965–66, the CIA's complicity in the Indonesian atrocities and how these tactics were later implemented by right-wing authoritarian governments in South and Central America with US approval. -- Rupture Radio is a weekly podcast looking at news, politics and culture from a socialist perspective. In Conversation with Rayner Lysaght

In Conversation with Rayner Lysaght

We are very sad to report that Rayner Lysaght, who you may recognise from our episode on the Limerick Soviet, has passed away at the age of 80. To commemorate his passing we are sharing the complete, previously unreleased, interview with Rayner in 2019 about the Limerick Soviet and its lessons for today. Rayner was a giant and a gent on the Irish socialist left and will be greatly missed by us all. Our thoughts go out to his loving wife Aine, brother William and sister Priscilla Stewart as well as all his loved ones. As his death notice says, quoting Trotsky: "“Life is beautiful. Let the future generations cleanse it of all evil, oppression, and violence, and enjoy it to the full.” More resources Previous episode on the Limerick Soviet: https://anchor.fm/ruptureradio/episodes/The-Limerick-Soviet-1919-w-Cian-Prendiville--Aprille-Scully-eu93kv Obituary of Rayner: https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/rayner-lysaghtobituary-leading-activist-and-historian-in-the-labour-movement-and-a-hugely-influential-figure-in-irelands-left-wing-political-sphere-40638871.html Rayner's pamphlet on the Limerick Soviet: https://libcom.org/library/1919-story-limerick-soviet Video interview with Rayner about his life and ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iDStnCDBco
