In God's perfect timing

Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have. And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds.

During teenage stages of life is where a lot of us search for our identity. We listen to Nelson and Eric tell us how they navigated that amidst their relationship with each of their father.  Looking for approval and likeness to that constant figure that is supposed to mould you.

4. HEALTHY PARENTING & SAFE SPACES | The Samburu Chronicles

As we sum up this series, Nyaruai speaks to us on intentional parenting and healthy parenting.  She tells us how she is cultivating parent-child communication through healthy conversations around bodily changes and agency over their bodies at different age stages. She tells us how she has invested in different books that educate her on how she can achieve this.

She encourages us to be the generation that eliminates sexual stigma and body trauma right from the house as we are our children's first educators.

3. RAPE | BODY TRAUMA | The Samburu Chronicles

3. RAPE | BODY TRAUMA | The Samburu Chronicles

By the basic fact that you are a human being, you have human rights.  Nelson and Onyango share their personal stories.  These past few days and generally the entire month of March have seen us expose what is yet a huge gap in the GBV space. We still cannot talk about rape without thinking that it is only a violent act, we cannot speak of rape without blaming the victim, we cannot speak of rape without focusing on the perpetrators and justice.

Our understanding of rape is still very narrow and a lot of stigmas still surround it.

Rape can happen to anyone, female and male. No one is immune to trauma. We need to believe victims, we need to seek justice for them, we need to create safe spaces and honest social conversations that foster and bring healing.

1. CHILD BIRTH | BODY TRAUMA | The Samburu Chronicles

1. CHILD BIRTH | BODY TRAUMA | The Samburu Chronicles

We introduce the topic of Body Trauma by looking at the whole environment of birth.

Women's bodies are conditioned to prevent birth through constant contraception, they are forced or willingly go through an abortion, and sometimes in the event of medical emergencies or medical complications, they go through miscarriages.

In episode 1 of our Body Trauma, we start by looking at slavery on the trauma black women went through including being pregnancy breeding to increase the slave count and being the first people who were test cases into gynecology. We speak on birth rape and Nyaruai shares her story on this. How has that birth trauma been passed down through generations?  Where do men fit into the equation? We simply cannot always crucify men by their lack of having a womb and telling them that they can never understand, truth is they can never experience childbirth but how can we involve them? Onyango Otieno speaks into his own personal experience.

Journey with us by sharing your stories and helping us bring more understanding into this.

Our work is to always share with you and contribute to the bigger picture of mental wellness and wellbeing.

SELF CARE: THE MORE YOU BRING OUT YOUR EMOTIONS, THE BETTER YOU HEAL | Samburu Chronicles

SELF CARE: THE MORE YOU BRING OUT YOUR EMOTIONS, THE BETTER YOU HEAL | Samburu Chronicles

Saitu Nelson due to the nature of his job and being an introvert has 2 therapists to help him manage his mental health on top of his own self-care steps.

Structure and order are extremely important for him and they come on top of his routine.  Physical health, nutrition, and a good 8hr sleep help him recharge because he gets 99% of his energy from himself.  WATERRRRRR  Reading a lot of books helps him with his mental health and growth.  Validity check and a mental sieve especially around what is shared on social media and the news. He believes that there is always a story behind the story.  Therapy sessions   Emotional health fueled by music and dancing naked. He also records himself talking about his week, insecurities, high and low moments and he watches himself and analyses himself.  Social routine, joining a group of outdoor activities.  He is very deliberate about his spiritual growth and life. He values a personal walk with God.

SELF CARE: THE HIGHEST FORM OF REBELLIOUSNESS | Samburu Chronicles

SELF CARE: THE HIGHEST FORM OF REBELLIOUSNESS | Samburu Chronicles

Nyaruai Mureithi is a mother on top of her many jobs and she shares with us her self-care routine.

Adequate sleep is extremely important for her and not carrying her phone to bed is the first step to adequate sleep.  In the mornings, she loves just laying in the bed and setting intentions for her wellness and her children. She starts checking her phone at 10 am.  As a mother she does not shout at her children because she respects that she has 2 autonomous children that have the right to all their feelings, it is very important to have conversations with children on their level so that they understand and comprehend fully what is right or wrong.  She wears herself in her real form.  High levels of vaginal hygiene.  Investing in friendships and respecting each other's boundaries especially being very aware of their mental wellness and health.  Creating safe spaces overall for both herself and everyone around her.

6. MEN & THEIR BODIES | BODY POLITICS | The Samburu Chronicles

6. MEN & THEIR BODIES | BODY POLITICS | The Samburu Chronicles

More often than not, when we speak of melanin we never mention #melaninkings. We are all about that shea butter and cocoa goodness for the melanin queen and not the melanin king yet in our African cultures men spent hours tending to their bodies to look beautiful. In the case of the Samburu people which is my culture, the morans spend hours twisting their hair and had hair shoulder-length, they adorn their bodies with beautiful beads, from their heads to their ankles and women go wild for this I tell you. And to add to it, the more beautiful a moran is the more attractive he would get, and he would be beautiful and still work hard.

The Samburu people marvel at their morans being manly and beautiful.

Today due to modernization and the influence of western culture, when a man is seen to take care of himself through grooming or even have ornaments on his body then he is looked at as feminine. We are slowly allowing our cultures to be watered down and replaced by other people's influences.  We need to create more spaces for our men to be beautifully handsome. They too are melanin kings and they deserve that glow.

5. SOCIAL MEDIA & MENTAL HEALTH | BODY POLITICS | The Samburu Chronicles

5. SOCIAL MEDIA & MENTAL HEALTH | BODY POLITICS | The Samburu Chronicles

I have always struggled to fit into social media simply because I am fat, I have acne, I am dark-skinned, etc. I was so insecure and I remember denying myself food when I was in my early twenties so that just in case I couldn't lighten my skin or clear my acne then I could check the skinny box at least. It was a difficult thing, and I also remember my sister picking that up, she wouldn't eat so that she could remain extremely skinny.     All these were effects of social media and what we were consuming.

We had it in our heads that to be accepted you must conform, and the more we tried the worse it became because we were not our real selves. We would be extremely miserable. Then I remember my mother encouraging me to go for my first photo shoot, which changed my life. I started embracing my real self with all my beauty, I started being unapologetic about my body and my skin and my acne.

It took many years to break off the social media construct that I had. I had to painfully work at creating a space for myself and many other girls like me.

When I decided to create this series, I knew that I wanted to pass the message that you are not your body or the outer physical. Your beauty and essence lie in your realness and rawness.

2. BODY INSECURITY | BODY POLITICS | The Samburu Chronicles

Bodies change differently as children grow up through adolescence into adulthood. Male voices break in different ways and their muscular and physical structure changes rapidly or stagnate from body to body at various ages and the same happens to female bodies, breasts and hips develop at different times and in different densities.

How aware are we of the fact that our biology affects how we view our bodies?

1. THE COLONIAL ERA OF THE BODY | BODY POLITICS | The Samburu Chronicles

We speak on where it all began from the colonial era and the industrial era. In the colonial and industrial era, men were taught that to be hunters they had to be emotionally stable and their bodies had to toughen up while the women were taught that their work is to gather fruits and tend to the homestead hence emotional vulnerability and your IQ is not needed in the industrial era.

Stigma & Covid 19 | The Samburu Chronicles | 20.7.2020/Ep23/2020

Stigma & Covid 19 | The Samburu Chronicles | 20.7.2020/Ep23/2020

Do you tell people that you are COVID 19 positive?

We are making it so difficult for us to be healthy, both physically and mentally. Stigma in itself makes people scared. Scared of being honest, because when you are honest, you are shunned. You are looked at as a disgrace. "I mean, how did you even contract COVID 19? How could you even? Haiya, umeskia nani ako? Uyo hawezi make... bla bla ... " Alarmist behaviour.

People suddenly stop calling you, they distance you because of that "Guilty by association" mindset we have; if you had a family, your family is shunned too. And to make matters worse, even after you recover, you are still looked at as a disgrace. As a careless individual. It is such a foolish thing to think like that knowing very well it could be you or me. I mean even care givers with PPE's are still contracting this thing. We are all at risk.

As if the loss of jobs, hunger, increased GBV happening around is not enough! We are now faced with an even deadlier stage that this pandemic is bringing. STIGMA.

People have been scared, anxious and depressed. People are now angry and frustrated. The situation is not improving, it keeps taking lives and the worst fuel to this is, there is still no vaccine, there is still no form of direction. We are walking in darkness with open eyes but no light whatsoever to illuminate the path we are walking on.

Stigma is the worst cause of mental illness & loneliness that exists. We are marking people who have COVID 19 or members of a household of a COVID 19 patient as a disgrace. We are openly refusing to call and check on families because if you were known to be associated with that family automatically you are labelled as COVID 19. To imagine that someone is already struggling with COVID 19 then on top of that adding the fact that your friends and or family are avoiding you.

Lets be more kind and patient with one another. Remember this could happen to anyone.

Lets exercise caution, alertness and also realize that you are at risk the moment you step out of your household. The moment you interact with mama mboga, or chapa stories with friends, or board a matatu, or an uber, or sign documents, or place your phone at the entry checkpoint of a mall / or a supermarket, that single moment, any moment could be your contact moment. The risks are so many. Let's just be careful. Wash your hands frequently, avoid touching surfaces and your face, wear your mask. Don't go out if its not a must.

And above all, check up on your friends, genuinely!

God is still working | The Samburu Chronicles | 17.7.2020/Ep22/2020

I am scared | Daily Diary | 9.7.2020/Ep21/2020

I am scared | Daily Diary | 9.7.2020/Ep21/2020

I am scared and on this episode I express my fear.

I have been really mentally clogged and I can feel my body is so tired. So very tired. I am trying to sleep at anytime really just to prevent myself from harming myself by harboring self destructive thoughts. There is so much uncertainty and a lot is going and the pandemic is not making being alive easy. You constantly worry for your health and your loved ones. People have lost their jobs, businesses closed, houses closed, hunger, huge debts accruing, relationships torn apart.

Just uncertainty.

Making it worse is that for a lot of people, home is not safe. You are told to stay at home but it is in that home that physical & emotional abuse occurs, rape, gender based violence, teen pregnancy... just name them. Virus outside the home, violence inside the home. Where do you go?

Our families, friends, colleagues and most people are battling so much in silence leading them to depression, anxiety, anger, suicide and many other mental health problems. People are struggling and suffering in silence. The internet is filled with news of pain, anguish and suffering; if you are keen enough you will notice the same on peoples faces. People are in pain.

Check up on at least 3 people. Listen. Be there. Just listen.

The world needs us to create safe spaces for people to feel okay expressing their pain. We should not oppress victims for speaking their truth. In speaking and letting it out do you find relief. Lets be kind to ourselves, to each other.

Let's be patient and help create comfort in whatever capacity you can.

Is it an encouraging post? Put it up on your socials

Is it a message of comfort? Send it.

Is it a phone call? Make it.

The world needs empathy now more than ever.

I care for you. I love you. Always remember that you are enough, you are everything and you deserve everything good under the sun.

Love,

Ellein Nasieku

To know yourself, to love yourself | Daily Diary | 8.7.2020/Ep20/2020

To know yourself, to love yourself | Daily Diary | 8.7.2020/Ep20/2020

Today I was more re-active. My brain struggled to function so I was kind to it instead. I gave it a break.

This is our second livestream fam! Super proud.

In this episode I get to speak about relationships and relate it to my personal story. Finally linking the dots after my 2018 Dadasphere talk.  I speak about my relationship and why I decided that I needed to be alone. I share how I am happy that I am giving that 10yr old self a voice again.

It is very important to know yourself, to love yourself. The love and attention we so seek from the world will never ever be enough until we fill the cup ourselves. With filling the cup, we allow space for it to pour out into the world.

How are you to give yourself to someone if you don't know who you are?

That energy we put into everything else around us should be put into ourselves. Spending time to get to know who we are. Sitting in silence, listening to the spirit, listening to our thoughts, our concerns, our hopes and dreams, knowing our boundaries, fighting our demons, making peace with what we think the world owes us and realizing that we owe it ourselves to care for ourselves.

Love yourself, clap for yourself, appreciate yourself.

Never forget that you have everything you need within yourself.

You are enough, you are everything and you deserve everything good this life has to offer.

We need you, you matter.

Love,

Ellein Nasieku

Abusive relationships| Daily Diary | 6.7.2020/Ep18/2020

Abusive relationships| Daily Diary | 6.7.2020/Ep18/2020

A lot of people are stuck in abusive relationships without knowing where they will go and when they will get the strength and financial muscles to leave an abusive relationship. Questions cripple them from taking that step.

How will the society view me? My family? My friends?

How will I sustain myself? The kids? How will I even explain to the kids?

Will he or she agree to separate? co-parent? Will there be more violence if I decide to leave? Will he/she agree even?

And all these are valid questions and it is so difficult sometimes to cut all losses and take that leap. I don't blame anyone. We were never taught to fight for ourselves because that is selfish. We were never taught to be vulnerable because that is weakness. We were never taught that divorcing is not failure instead we were taught that if we get divorced or separated then it is shameful to the family.

We were never taught that speaking up is okay and could save millions of lives, instead we were taught that if you speak up you are seeking attention! We do not realize that the more we are in an abusive space the more damage it causes not only to ourselves but also everyone around us.

I mean, the constructs of our society must be broken down. Vulnerability is strength. We must speak up.

Take time and know yourself. Cultivate self adoration, respect, love. Learn to say No. Learn to Speak up.

Remember listening opens you up to learning new things.

Take charge and even though you may fall, that's okay, get up, dust yourself up and keep on moving. I know it is easy to point the finger at everyone else but yourself however growth only comes from a place of vulnerability, acceptance and openness.

We need to learn how to communicate and do it effectively. We need to teach our children the things that we were never taught. We need to intentionally raise children to be vulnerable and to have safe spaces. This survival mode must be done differently. To cry is okay.

Take care of your mental health. You deserve to be happy.

Love,

Ellein Nasieku

Am I doing enough? | Daily Diary | 4.7.2020/Ep16/2020

My day today was really slow however I got a few lessons I wanted to share with you on the show.

I thought, am I doing enough? am I enough? why am I taking so long to see the fruits of my hard work? But then, you can't control how the world responds, what you can control is your persistence and consistence, continue doing what you love. Your time will come. Your business will work, you will get that job, that promotion, that opportunity. Abundance exists.

Do you ever totally heal from trauma? A friend asked me today and I said I am not sure, what I know is with time, facing your fears and pain makes it easier to live a full life.

Listen to these and many more thoughts on today's episode.

May God be with you and protect you.

Part 3 : Menstruation is listed as a VITAL SIGN | The Samburu Chronicles/Ep10/2020

Part 3 : Menstruation is listed as a VITAL SIGN | The Samburu Chronicles/Ep10/2020

A special thank you to my friend and fellow queen Grace Nyaruai Mureithi for working with me on this period series.

She reminds us of a fact that our periods are actually listed as a vital sign by the Association of OBGYNS!!!

This basically means that our period chart can be studied to determine whether there are any critical underlying issues with our health and we are here for it!

It is very vital for us to care for our bodies and embrace the changes that come each month. Giving ourselves the best nutrition and TLC.

We only have this one body, we better care for it as it is a temple and a part of creating life.

As always thank you very much for listening to my content and subscribing to my channel.

I appreciate you and remember that you are enough, you are everything and you deserve everything good under the sun!

Part 1: Let's talk about periods or menstruation and confidence | The Samburu Chronicles/Ep8/2020

Part 1: Let's talk about periods or menstruation and confidence | The Samburu Chronicles/Ep8/2020

Young girls miss school each month because they are ashamed of menstruating. They are ashamed of the journey towards womanhood! Young girls are depressed because they have been bullied in school when they stained their clothes! Young girls refuse to leave the house and leave a normal life for 7 days each month because of shame!
Why are we afraid to normalize conversations around menstruation, when it is a girls right of passage into womanhood?
Why are period conversations still such a "taboo" topic to tackle?
After all, women go through this, wives, mothers, daughters, girlfriends... we go through this every month and for the average woman, it lasts up-to 7 days. And because we have failed to normalize this conversation, menstruation period as a new journey for a girl and an already menstruating woman has become such a tough time. We struggle to navigate and are lost in discovering how our bodies adapt and change each month.
Our cycles can literally be affected by a change in environment, a change in diet, a broken relationship, excitement, a loss of job, high levels of stress, exercise... name it. Our hormones require balance each and every time and FUN FACT... for each woman, the journey is totally different. The best we can do is equip women with information and help them understand that it is normal, this is our right of passage into womanhood and it should be celebrated just as equally as a boys right of passage into manhood.

Move to lower sexual consent from 18+ yrs to 16+ yrs

This is a debate that we should all contribute to. I generally feel that yes their is the fact that our teenagers are actively having sexual engagements amongst themselves, however do I really feel like lowering the consent age is right based on the behaviour of our teenagers. Not really! I feel like it opens up doors to predators who know that there is a leeway!

Part 2: Play Kenyan Music

Part 2: Play Kenyan Music

Helping the industry grow by virtue of playing Kenyan music alone won’t help, however incorporating mentorships and doing follow ups from the well versed artists and media houses will help elevate the industry to new heights. Being an artists does not only entail fame, it requires a lot of work, dedication, sacrifice and commitment to build a brand and a powerhouse and to be honest some of our artists are very oblivious to quality and longevity of their artistry and they just want 10mins of fame rendering the whole industry mediocre. Let’s push and demand quality and help this industry grow.

Mental health and surviving r.kelly!

Mental health and surviving r.kelly!

People need to accept that mental health is a reality. How we are treated as children ultimately builds on our characters as we continue growing up. Society needs to bring so much awareness around mental health. I am glad the women on Surviving R.Kelly have come out and are talking about the abuse they faced and I am glad that people can actually talk about this stuff. As someone who has gone through mental health(something I will talk about in-depth later), I would ask people to not only be busy starting movements against R.Kelly but to also be busy sensitizing people about certain issues that we are too afraid to bring out. So many people continue suffering in silence because we have been taught to just push things under the mat and say, “oh well, it’s life” and so on and so forth... NO ITS NOT LIFE AND ALL THAT SHIT WE SAY TO MAKE OURSELVES FEEL OKAY! Let’s talk please, let’s talk and realize just talking may help other people gain the courage to actually go out and get help. #my2sense #buluketalks
