Ep. 5.05: Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras, Becoming Invisible & Reading Omens (Ch. 3)
Yoga Sūtras 3.21 - 3.22: What does becoming invisible and reading omens have to do with yoga? Nothing! It is a metaphor. Becoming invisible means being able to be still. Patañjali is cleverly leading us towards a superior foundation; one from which we can more clearly discern what we are doing with our time and energy - to see: Our we our own best friend or our own enemy. In order to assess this, we must first bring ourselves under control. So just like in the Vedic instructions, so too in the yogic instructions: Listen carefully (3.17), look carefully (3.18), control your body with stability & ease (3.21), then we can see how to guide ourselves in this life.

Ep. 5.04: Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras, The Window to Your Soul (Ch. 3)
Yoga Sūtras 3.18 - 3.20: In Ashtānga Yoga we are taught to fix our attention in three places: Breathing, Posture & Dṛṣṭi (eyes). Why are the eyes so important? Patañjali actually teaches three essential aspects of the eyes that will help us to overcome our habits and lack of self-awareness (yea, really - have you noticed how little we actually know about ourselves or are you still under the spell of thinking everything is happening consciously - because it certainly is not). Sūtra 18 is the first teaching on the eye. We are supposed to observe our eyes as a self-reflective meditation (svādhyāya) to shed light on where we are coming from. The other two essential aspects about the eyes are found in Sūtras 3.26 & 3.28. Together, these three teaching about the eyes bring far greater depth of purpose to our Ashtānga practice of Dṛṣṭi.

Ep. 5.03: Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras, Listening is the Foundation (Ch. 3)
Yoga Sūtras 3.17 - 3.22 (but mostly 3.17): Vital to the process of yoga is what Patañjali refers to as cleaning our memory (smṛti). This essentially means becoming conscious of our karma and managing it with freedom rather than from the bondage of our habits & the concepts we hold about the way the world is and should be. We do this by self-reflecting (svādhyāya). The process when done with deep sincerity is quite liberating. So much so that Patañjali gives us a list of self-reflective meditations to quicken our progress along the path to greater self-awareness, skill & joy. First and foremost, we must learn to become exceptionally good listeners.

Ep. 5.02: Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras, It's Either Up or Down Never the Same (Ch. 3)
Yoga Sūtras 3.13 - 3.16: Well you know, "the only thing constant is change." So we are either going up or going down, but our conditions are definitely not staying the same. So, think about how conditions get created and take the best possible steps towards creating more preferable conditions. Our behavior, our health, our wealth, all these things either go up or down according to the behavior and actions we choose now. If we want to become enlightened, then we must work towards becoming ripe for a big awakening. If we want to do handstands and backbends, then too, we must take appropriate steps in order for this to happen. If, in the future, we want the best opportunities for our children, then we provide the best situations for them now. If we spend too much time just enjoying ourselves, being complacent, avoiding discipline and intelligent hard work, then our behavior, our health, our wealth will degrade. Whatever we do or do not cultivate, will either prosper or decline accordingly. This is Patañjali’s message in this section and he gives us some common sense considerations to help us implement this wisdom.

Ep. 4.40: Yoga Sutras on Breathing Part 4 (2.52)
Yoga Sūtras 2.52
Yoga Sūtras 2.52, tataḥ kṣīyate prakāśa-āvaraṇam ||
Prāṇāyāma reduces that which covers our inner spiritual light ||
Breathing bridges the unconscious to the conscious. How? Physiologically breathing belongs to both the autonomic (unconscious) functions as well as conscious motor actions. The more we master our breathing the less unconscious we become. Our psychological conditioning - unconsciously stored in the body - gradually gets washed clean by mastering our breathing processes.
This discussion goes in-depth into the psychology of being present vs being not present - which simply comes down to whether we give our attention to the process of perception or to the memory-thoughts that arise moment to moment. How does this relate to reducing that which covers our spiritual light? Because it is our conditioning - which is just memories in action - that suppresses our innate wisdom. There's more to the process so check out the discussion ... ! We also detail the various lists that get presented to help us recognize our conditioning: e.g. the six spiritual enemies, the five kleshas, etc.

Yoga Sūtras 2.49 - 2.51
Yoga Sūtras 2.51, bāhya-abhyantara-viṣaya-ākṣepī caturthaḥ ||
Beyond the objects of breathing – such as exhalation, inhalation and so forth – lies a fourth realm to prāṇāyāma (aka kevala kumbhaka). ||
Today we practiced a simple yet very effective pranayama for increasing our lung capacity. We discussed the ratios to be used for breathing exercises and the process of making the breath very long & very subtle – the secret process for developing the not so mysterious but widely unknown fourth pranayama (kevala kumbhaka). Ep. 4.37: Yoga Sutras on Breathing Part 1 (2.49 - 2.50)
Yoga Sūtras 2.49 - 2.50, Check out the discussion ... !
Yoga Sūtras 2.50, bāhya-abhyantara-stambha-vṛttiḥ deśa-kāla-saṁkhyābhiḥ paridṛṣṭaḥ dīrgha-sūkṣmaḥ ||
Prāṇāyāma is practiced by regulating the ratios of time and the location of the breath during, exhalation, inhalation & retention. It requires diligent observation and advances as it becomes longer and more subtle. ||
There are many parts of the breathing process to learn & develop. Jalandhara Bandha helps us develop the stability of the structure throughout the breathing process and this prepares us for meditation or rather stabilizes our attention. The 胎息 tāi xī embryonic breathing pattern leads to stability: exhaling from the Mūla Bandha to the heart, then also inhaling the same, from Mūla Bandha to the heart - constantly drawing the energy in & up seeking back to our origin - deep inside the core of our core.

भगवद्गीता ४।०७
Whenever there is major decay of dharma and a rise of adharma, then I manifest myself [in the world] – Bh.G. 4.07
Life cycles naturally. Nothing - no state of harmony nor of disharmony - lasts forever. It is inevitable that things can only become so disrupted before they turn around and begin supporting growth once again. So when the Dharma, the principles of evolution, become extremely deteriorated, then it is time for the energies to reverse and for Dharma to once again come back into the world. Creation, itself, produces an instrument to initiate this changing tide. Thus, it is said that Krishna manifests Himself into the world.

Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 33 - 38, The Insatiable Fire of Desire: In this Bhagavad Gītā Satsaṅga, Sri Krishna discusses how desire – left unchecked –becomes insatiable: Greed can never be satisfied. Thus knowing Him as superior to the intelligence, having firmly composed the self by the Self, slay the enemy, difficult to overcome & having the form of desire – Bh.G. 3.43
Once we know what's better through experience, our inclinations naturally shift from older less beneficial ones to those higher quality inclinations that we have now come to know. The subtler higher aspects of our self - once known by experience - cause us to naturally put down the less healthy aspects of our past behaviors & choices. This verse is talking about contacting that which is beyond the intellect as being the guiding force to cause supreme transformation. We approach this step by step according to our own process.

“One’s own dharma, though imperfect, is better than another’s dharma perfectly done. Better death in one’s own dharma; another’s dharma is full of fear” – Bh.G. 3.35
Our own Dharma is determined according to our own unique makeup. When we are on the right path - for ourselves - then even if we experience challenge after challenge after challenge, we feel committed to it. When we get confused thinking the grass is greener on the other side, and deviate from fulfilling the purpose of our nature, then we easily become distraught by challenges. Even simple challenges will rattle us. We may even invent our own dramas simply because there is a disharmony between the path we are on and what truly suits our nature. This is what is meant by saying that “another’s dharma is full of fear.”

Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 3 - 8, The Hypocrite Sits Still: This discussion clarifies what qualities someone should have if they practice the path of wisdom (Jñāna Yoga). Can anyone who enjoys philosophy embark upon this path or is there a rule of thumb to indicate who should practice the yoga of action (Karma Yoga) & who the yoga of wisdom (Jñāna Yoga)? In what way should the yoga of action be practiced so that it purifies the heart rather than creating more bondage generating ignorance. Ep. 4.12: Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 1 - 4, The Two-Fold Path to Yoga, Karma & Jnana
Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 1 - 4, The Two-Fold Path to Yoga, Karma & Jñāna: Karma Yoga & Jñāna Yoga are mutually supportive. Karma Yoga makes the mind fit for Jñāna Yoga. It is a spectrum of orientation. We orient ourselves as practicing yoga & doing work to purify ourselves, and gradually, we gain in wisdom and see things from a deeper perspective. The act of doing works never ends, but our intentions, our heart changes. Thus the shift from Karma towards Jñāna represents a maturation of our progress in yoga. Ep. 4.09: Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 56 - 60, From Preschool Yoga Basics to Advanced Theoretical Yogic Sciences
Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 56 - 60, From Preschool Yoga Basics to Advanced Theoretical Yogic Sciences: What are preschool yoga basics and what are advanced theoretical yogic sciences? Preschool basics are simple common sense things like don’t be so short sighted and stupid. Greed, fear, anger & the like simply cause to many obvious problems to be worth whatever it is we are so attached to. Let it go; don’t be stupid; think about the consequences. The advanced theoretical side of yoga is seeing through the subtle illusion of our identity falsely wrapped up in forms, feelings, thoughts, memories & behaviors. Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 41 - 43, Drona's Test & Arjuna the Eunuch: Welcome back after a months break while we focused on creating the new Shala space, Samjiva Nilayam. Thank you for your patience and support. It is an exciting time coming back together. Today, we tell a couple of stories: Drona's test demonstrating the profound value of concentration, and how Arjuna's curse to become a eunuch becomes a blessing. Ep. 4.05: Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 37 - 40, The Birth & Killings of Krishna
Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 37 - 40, The Birth & Killings of Krishna + The Yoga of Knowledge (Sankhya): In this episode, we hear about Krishna’s birth by Devaki & Vasudeva with the ominous prediction spoken from the sky (Vahni Akasha - Ākāśa) that he would be the one to kill his uncle, the insidiously evil Kansa (Kaṁsa), king of Mathura. All this as background description to the first verse of mantra Krishna Ashtakam (Krishnashtakam Kṛṣṇāṣṭakam) which references the killing of Kamsa & his demonic henchman, Chanura (Cāṇūra). In Bhagavad Gītā verses we wrap up the Sāṁkhya perspective (Darśana) and begin the teachings about yoga - which are summed up in a word, “Equanimity”. Please take a peek and hear it for yourself. Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2, v. 30 - 36 - The Yoga of Knowledge (Sāṁkhya): In this section Sri Krishna winds down the teachings on the true nature of creation and the individual, and reminds us that when the wind is at our back, when the tide is in our favor, when the window of opportunity is open, we must seize it. These are the times when our natural talents produce the most results for us, and we mustn't allow fear or confusion to undermine us. We also discuss some of Arjuna's superior feats of valor: his battle against Indra & the gods at Indraprashtha and his battle with Shiva at Vijayawada where he was blessed with the divine weapon Pashupatastra.
