Disconnect exists between small business owners, National City officials during the COVID-19 pandemic
In this episode, Gabriel Schneider looks into the gap between small business owners and San Diego County’s second-oldest city’s administration. National City has been hit disproportionately hard by both high COVID-19 infection rates and unemployment throughout the pandemic.
City officials had to build trust within the community, tackle language barriers and advertise financial assistance. But some business owners still never received any help and many Highland Avenue business owners struggled to keep their doors open.
This podcast is a part of The Highland Avenue project the Democracy and the Informed Citizen Emerging Journalist Fellowship program. The fellows selected were Katia Pechenkina, Vicky Pineda, Gabriel Schneider and Susana Serrano.

City Speaks: City College theatre student discusses how courses were impacted by pandemic
San Diego City College student Gary Tallaksen discusses the changes in the classes and the production of theatre classes.
Instructors at City College took charge of Zoom to overcome the challenges of the pandemic.
As students continued to take classes online, some courses became continuously difficult.
In spring 2020, the production of "Urinetown" was postponed. As the class continued online, changes were made to adapt to the circumstances.
“When everything changed it seemed to happen overnight,” Tallaksen said. “You know, we were in full rehearsals for Urinetown and everybody was getting excited.”
It was the virtual production in the fall of last year called “Mere Mortals'' where Tallaksen played a New York City construction worker where he decided if he wanted to continue taking courses throughout the pandemic.

City Speaks: Dean speaks about the return of City College student radio
Due to the San Diego City College being closed, the campus' student radio program has been broadcasting in an automated format without on-air talent.
The only regular program on the station this spring semester was News Radio Midday, which had to be produced off-campus.
Dean Jeanie Tyler, who is in charge of City College’s School of Arts, Humanities, Communications, & Telecommunications, talked about the newscast on today’s podcast, acknowledging the hard work that it takes to produce the show.
“I think given the challenges of all of us being remote right now while the campus remains closed,” Tyler said, “that I am actually very proud of the work that is still able to be done live while we’re working under these conditions.”
When it comes to the future of SDS Radio, Tyler expects it to be back on the air for the fall semester in a limited form.
“In the fall, if we are able to offer the radio class, I do see some instances in which students will be able to get into the booth again, but probably not on a regular basis,” she said.
Tyler also brought up an idea from City College President Ricky Shabazz of collaborating with the college’s Jazz radio station, KSDS.
“We used to have radio students who did live weather and traffic and sports updates on KSDS," Tyler said. "We want to get back to that model.”
Listen to Tyler discuss the future of student radio, as well as City College’s radio classes, in this episode.
