Problems with U.S. ski journalists, what is the FIS Games, the Russians are banned (and what do they think?), and Klaebo is off the national team, but it's a win-win-win - so much spice!

Problems with U.S. ski journalists, what is the FIS Games, the Russians are banned (and what do they think?), and Klaebo is off the national team, but it's a win-win-win - so much spice!

Well, last week's show was all nonsense celebration and preposterousness, but on this edition of the SederSkier Podcast we get into the meat of the matter.

First, we honor the life of NSIC legend Paul Yak, who passed away last week - a tremendous runner we lost far too soon.

Then, it's right into the ins and outs of all things hot, controversial XC skiing takes....and there's serious controversy.

- What's wrong with ski journalists and the difference between being in PR and writing hard news pieces.....

- A nice climate-change rant...

- What do we think of the FIS Games?

- The Russians are banned again - but the IOC doesn't agree with FIS....why? And, how is the Russian online press covering this?

- Why do we think Klaebo was thrilled about the Norwegian team cutting its budget

- We close with some EPIC controversy hidden deep within the FIS congress committee reports

SederSkier Podcast Season 4 kick-off!

SederSkier Podcast Season 4 kick-off!

There's a lot of really important Nordic news out there to get to (Klaebo leaving the national team, Russians getting banned, FIS Games ...what is that? ....) and at some point, we will discuss it, but first: more important stuff.

There is no better way to kick off season 4 of sederskiing than going back to last year....and finally paying off our tease to hand out some year end awards. We have male and female performers of the year, moments of the year, race of the year, Sporthill Slo-mos of the year, Americans of the Year, quote of the year, and, of course, the Preposterous Statement of the Year.

We also read a listener email (if you'd like to email the show, reach out to sederskier@gmail.com).

You might not learn anything, but that's ok, there's other podcasts for that. We've got long rants, luke-warm hot-takes, and probably totally uncalled-for analogies in a sport so niche it's carried this even-more-niche show to the number four slot in "Nordic Ski-specific podcasts in Lake County, Colorado."

Enjoy.

The Teemu Virtanen experience

The Teemu Virtanen experience

Former 24-hour xc ski distance world record holder Teemu Virtanen joins us for a show that will please not only double-pole dorks world wide but every single person who sets goals and goes after them.

On this show, we pick the Ski Classics commentator's brain about his recent attempt at taking back that 24 hour record - how he prepared, how it went, all that…

....we also talked about his life in the U.S., and how he went from dropping skiing cold turkey while he worked in Hollywood…that’s right…all before he ever went over 400k in a day…

Finally, we chatted about DP technique and the state of the ski classics union...listen to find out whether or not it's coming to North America....

Thank you Teemu! It was so fun talking to you!

Rosie Brennan comes on the SederSkier Podcast

Rosie Brennan comes on the SederSkier Podcast

*We are aware that our audio from 1:11-1:18 was missing...it has now been included! Sorry...Ajee, our interim producer is actually a three-year-old Border Collie/German Shepherd mix, so this shouldn't come as a huge surprise....

"But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
For a hero's strength is measured by his heart,"

If you don't have the right appreciation for Rosie Brennan, you will after this show.

At 34 years old, the two-time Olympian — twice cut by the U.S. Ski team — was fourth in the overall World Cup standings, the second time she’s done so in the last three years. She finished fifth in the World Championships 30k, said by some to be one of the best distance performances by an American skier ever. We talk about everything – the past, the future, skis, development, and what question she'd prefer a journalist to ask her in the finish zone.

"It's not about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward

...that's how winning is done!!!!"

Thanks Rosie!

It's a GripWax Nation Update from Sederskier HQ!

Hey folks!

Just a little update on what's coming!

We spoke to Val Constien and Rosie Brennan today and can't wait for those shows to drop so stay tuned, invite your friends, and feast on some of those old episodes (wouldn't you just like to hear a 2021 World Cup TDS rant right about now!?). Plus, shoot us some questions we should ask Teemu Virtanen before Monday's interview with the long-distance legend who just fell short of the 24hour world record ski attempt.

Keep on striving...keep on skiing....

SederSkier Podcast: You want outrage!? We can do that.....

SSCV U.S. Junior National Champion Will Bentley makes his soundbyte debut and there's so much to rant about going into the final World Cup weekend in Lahti! Are the Swede's cheating? Is the World Cup point system broken? Body-image inconsistency again?! Equal waxes? Could Klaebo come to Leadville for an altitude training camp?!

With all of that to rage about, you know we had to kick things off with a story about Novi's first trip to Olive Garden and a random ski picture that is at the Brass Armadillo in Denver.....still.....

We also talked with a 16-year old high school junior who went over 100k and the founder of the event, Dan Batwinas and his son Jacob, who stayed up all night on his birthday to count laps.

We'll have Falun World Cup coverage/recap/discussion coming later in the week.

The SederSkier Podcast finds the lightest ski poles on earth and talks to the most interesting man in the Nordic ski world, Andy Liebner

Enjoy this evening conversation with Andy Liebner, the most fascinating figure in cross-country skiing.

Retired pro skier, former Alaska cross-country running high school state champion, author of Wild Shot, and founder and owner of the United States Ski Pole Company, Liebner has about 45,000 hours worth of great stories, but we pack as much as we can into one. Stay tuned to learn more about:

1) how USSPC poles are made and what makes them different from the other brands

2) if USSPC poles are on the World Cup (you might be surprised)

3) where the lightest ski pole on earth can be found

4)something you didn't know about an all-time xc ski legend

Garrett Heath hops on the Seder-Skier Podcast

Garrett Heath hops on the Seder-Skier Podcast

From the Minnesota-special intro to the bonus material at the end of the podcast, we've got it all for you this week.

Joining the show is pro track-turned-trail runner Garrett Heath. The Winona, MN product not only pulled off the DOUBLE triple crown — back-to-back 1600, 3200, and xc titles (kiddos, this was back before the MSHSL softened everything and made three classes, too) — he added two Nordic ski titles as well (which is, in case you were wondering, as many titles as Zak Ketterson won).

The 9x Stanford All-American has had a legendary career, and it's still going. After competing in the 5,000-meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2021, Heath made the move to the pro trail scene.

On this show, we talk about his upbringing, a little Nordic nonsense, what caused the shift to the trails, what's surprised him, and how it's changed his training. We also....and we know this is what you really care about ...discuss the epic Elliott Heath Birkie Mystery.

Heath is ending his season this Saturday on the Birkie trails for the USATF Half Marathon Trail Champs. On the show, we discuss who figures to be his biggest competition, and it's probably not who you — or maybe even he — was thinking.

Stick around for a BONUS 75-seconds of show that we are opening up for free to everyone, just this once. Next time, it will require a $99.99/week subscription. Plus, we threw in the 2015 hit which, to date, is only available on this show and in the CD drawer of a few random athletes on the three-peat Alamosa High School XC team.

Dan Hobbs, the self-supported 14er FKT record-holder, joins the SederSkier Podcast

Dan Hobbs, the self-supported 14er FKT record-holder, joins the SederSkier Podcast

As Dan Hobbs’ eyes ricochet off his suit coat and out his Rand Tower office window at the Marquette Avenue traffic below, his mind can’t help but wander back to Colorado.

In 2013, he bolted for the mountains, convinced they could heal him from severe depression.

It worked.

He hiked all 58 14,000-foot peaks in the centennial state in just 24-days.

Now, two years later, he’s at another midlife juncture. scornfully sizing up his suitcoat, he glances back at his screen, where a story about Andrew Hamilton’s new supported 14er record — 10 days — evokes a covetous stare.

“This should be me,” he mutters to himself.

Hobbs’ first venture to Colorado reminded him of life’s beauty.

His second — where he would lower the self-supported 14er record to 14 days, 17 hours and 33 minutes — would teach him how to thrive in its darkest moments.

We're so excited to share Dan's story — the first interview since setting the self-supported FKT for climbing all 58 14ers in Colorado — he's truly an amazing individual!

Enjoy!

SederSkier Podcast - Grip Wax Nation strikes again....and we give a shout out to Mom...

Grip wax nation is pitchfork nation, commentating on all of the problems in the universe once again, from Colorado’s ineptitude in prioritizing the state cross country ski meet like my home state of Minnesota to why we might have so many mental health issues in elite athletes…..

Believe it or not, we left some important topics off the table in this 90 minute episode….but we do offer praise to my mom and encouragement to all of you anonymous grinders out there….you know who you are.

Keep on skiing….keep on striving….

Skieologians: Should a high school phenom ever turn pro?

Skieologians: Should a high school phenom ever turn pro?

Hobbs Kessler recently shattered Alan Webb’s high school 1500m record (also breaking Jim Ryun’s 55 year old U20 record as well) with a 3:34.36. This time is also faster than the NCAA DI 1500 meter record. Kessler, who was a 4:24 miler as recently as the start of the pandemic, has committed to running at Northern Arizona. The question has arisen with him, as it did with Mary Cain, Katelyn Tuohy, and Drew Hunter before - should you capitalize on your financial value now and turn pro? Or should you go to college and develop there? Our answer, in typical Skieologian form, attacks the foundational issue with this question.

The Seder-Skier Podcast: Jan. 23 - "Toughen up, train harder, and make it rain." - Devon Kershaw

In this episode, which was two weeks in the making, we respond to one of Fasterskier.com's Devon Kershaw Show. In it, Kershaw chirps at Simi Hamilton, which we respond to, calls the Val Di Fiemme 'not skiing,' which we respond to, and reminds us the real secret of success in skiing: "toughen up, train harder, and make it rain."

In all seriousness, we have been loving the Jason Albert/Kershaw combination this season - it is like a way more edifying version of Steven A. Smith and Max Kellerman, only for nordic skiing. We had such a great time listening to their daily recaps of during the Tour de Ski that we figured it was worth preserving this show and finishing it, despite being late.

As always, get jacked and listen to at least the first 3 minutes!

The Ivan Babikov Show

First 30 - Ever wonder how well runners, rowers, and kayakers transfer to XC skiing? A 6 month program which looked to take elite athletes in those sports in order to prepare them for the Beijing Olympics took place in China, and the research, published in August 2020, is the first of its kind.

We discuss some surprising results which have implications for coaches, masters athletes, and anyone else who may have come to XC skiing as a second sport.

Skieologians - Sermon Questions - Jesus Take the Wheel?

Skieologians - Sermon Questions - Jesus Take the Wheel?

The Seder-Skier listens to a lot of sermons during those long hours on the bike and skis, and we decided it might be cool to talk about questions we have relating to them. Our first sermon comes fresh off the press (October 4th, FBC of Leadville, Pastor Tanner Thetford; "Jesus Take the Wheel?"), and wasn't listened to via an audio download. However, our normal Q&A which takes place after the sermon was cancelled this week.

I just had to ask Pastor Tanner some questions, and thought a few of my listeners might be interested in the topic. The first 10-12 minutes is me giving a brief summary of the sermon. Skip to about the 12 minute mark to hear my question and answer (that is right, I did pose my own answer to my question, but am looking for some sharpening from Tanner as well as some of my other friends in Christ.

Basically - we ask if there is inherent contradiction in the statement: "Because God is in control of all things, we should trust in Him rather than taking matters into our own hands." By harmonizing two Pauline texts - Ephesians 1:11 and Philippians 2:12-13, we pose our own answer, but wish to allow Pastor Tanner and some of our other friends in Christ to illuminate a correct interpretation of this text and some others.
