I Tried Time Blocking for 30 Days...and Here's What Happened.
This week, Allie shares a helpful time management strategy she’s been loving. When it came down to it, she noticed she was doing the same reoccurring tasks every day and frequently having to rewrite for the next day. These were simple 5-to-10-minute tasks but in rewriting them every morning she knew there was a better way to optimize this time.
She decided to get intentional, and for 30 days she time blocked out segments within her day for maximum efficiency and peace of mind. Her time scheduling tactic of opening and closing daily tasks have transformed how she does business and shows up for her clients.
If you have questions about time blocking drop them in the comments or DM me on Instagram @thealliemartin I would love to hear from you!

I'M GIVING AWAY FREE SOCIAL MEDIA DESK PLANNERS
This week, Allie is super excited to give away her Social Media Planning Pad for FREE. No, it is not just a download, it is a physical planning pad that lives on your desk and lasts for more than two whole years. Allie talks about how she had a client a couple of years ago and they always had an understanding that she would be coaching and teaching her how to take her social media back over on her own. Through the coaching and teaching about why content pillars were important, etc., Allie’s client shared that she just really wanted all of this on paper, written on something that could live on her desk. Allie couldn’t have agreed more, she has plenty of experience writing down ideas on post-its or loose pieces of paper that inevitably wind up lost, and so the idea for her desk planner was born. Every single month is one page, and it allows you to map out what content you need to be sharing on your social media. Allie’s favorite part is that you can still use your trusty post-it notes, but they are all kept in one place!

Interview with Paola Soares, But First She Failed Podcast Host
Allie is jumping right in with fellow podcast host Paola Soares. It all started when Allie was on Paola’s podcast--But First She Failed, so they decided to go full circle. But First She Failed features trailblazing women that are dominating their industries with a focus on their moments of failure and how those moments propelled them to where they are today. Paola speaks to the fact that she doesn’t actually believe in failure and she sees it as "you win or you learn." Paola goes on to talk about what failure means to her and how her podcast was birthed from her own failure.
Finally, Paola talks about what is next for her and how she just started coaching women who feel that they are meant for more or who are stuck in a rut. You are now able to book a breakthrough call with her, and from this, she will create a 30-day plan to get you on track for that dream job or dream business! 11.1 - Using Customer Service as your BEST marketing tool
Have you had a chance to experience a really, really nice hotel in your life?
I'm talking about the absolute best customer service you have ever experienced!
I am super lucky because I worked for the International SPA Association and would get to travel to some amazing properties!
You can just tell as soon as you step foot into the property that has put in the time and attention into your time with them - the furniture and bedding are luxurious, the little details are not forgotten and the customer service isn't just good - it goes beyond what you would expect.
I'm talking - delivering chocolate chip cookies and cold glasses of creamy milk to your room when you arrive, kind of hotel.
I'm talking - they hear it is your anniversary and send up a bottle of champagne to your room, kind of hotel.
I'm talking - when you go down to dine in the hotel restaurant they have your name printed on the menu, kind of hotel.
Now, try traveling to a sub-par hotel after experiencing this 5 star + + property...
Not only are you spoiled, but you appreciate that amazing property even more. You keep thinking about that amazing hotel that you once stayed at. Dreaming to be back there once again.
Think of your business in the same manner. What little touches can you deliver to make your customer's journey with you a 5 star + + experience? No one else will compare and it will leave your client's remembering you fondly and eager to work with you again.
Customer service is a very large chunk of how your clients will remember you - but the little touches, the thoughtful gestures, the personalization - they all play into their experience.
How can you create a 5 star ++ experience?
I hope you will get some good ideas from the guests I interviewed in this 11th season of Selfish. If you haven't yet, please leave me a review of the podcast. It is the best way for new listeners to find the podcast and it is becoming even more important for podcast hosts. I hope you enjoy!

10.1 - The One Thing That Changed Everything in My Business
I used to be a person that would always talk about my dreams, but it never occurred to me that I had to work towards them. It sounds silly now, but I genuinely thought if it was meant to be, it would fall into your lap.
I give a lot of credit to this podcast for giving me the motivation and drive I need to do other "big" things in my life - including starting my business.
I have interviewed over 100 entrepreneurs now and a common thread that I see when it comes to individuals that have success - the ones that are successful TAKE ACTION - messy, unorganized action. I used to be someone who had to have everything figured out before I would take action - I used to think I was just an organized person and I was being thorough and strategic, but then I realized I was using it as an excuse to keep from having to take the BIG action I knew I needed to take, but fear held me back.
I've been working through the book Business Made Simple by Donald Miller and the book is broken down into 60 days and has a video accompanying each section that you watch each morning of those 60 days before reading the lesson that follows in the book. What was today's?? Successful people are action takers. There are a lot of characteristics that make up successful people, some can be introverts, others are extroverts, some went to fancy colleges, others didn't go to college at all. But the one theme that encompasses every successful person - successful people get stuff done!
I am realizing how important this characteristic is in business leaders. I will talk to potential clients that are interested in my services, but they will make an excuse for why now isn't the right time. Turns out 6 months later, they call me back, and say they wished they had started working with me 6 months before.
I am all for being strategic, weighing the pros and the cons. And sometimes the timing isn't right to do something, but other times, you will never know unless you dive headfirst and figure it out along the way.
I remember being in my senior year of college when I set down at my desk to figure out my first set of goals. The prompt I was using said, where do you want to be in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years. I had no idea what I was going to do that weekend - it was too overwhelming to think about. I never would have dreamed that the life I am living now was possible then. But how did I get here from that apartment 10 years ago? Just messy action.
I didn't always give myself permission to take messy action, but in the last few years that I have. I have seen more growth in my life and my business than ever before. I think of it as, seeing opportunities and giving them all that I have to give. Some don't work out, but a lot have.
I have a good group of girlfriends who I talk to every single day, we share the good, the bad, and the ugly with each other. Among others in my life, they are my cheerleaders. Whenever I share happy news they say ALLIE - that's incredible. YOU MADE THAT HAPPEN.
It didn't hit me until recently, that while I know and have always trusted that God is in control, he wants to see us work towards that goal. He wants us to be inspiring others with our actions. So I want you to consider, what part of your life or business do you need to take action in? Has it been weighing on your heart? Let this be the pep talk you needed to get it down. Because I can tell you that being on the other side of that action and having your cheerleaders yell: YOU MADE THAT HAPPEN is the best feeling in the world.
And as I now celebrate 100 episodes, I ask that if you listen and enjoy these episodes - please leave a review. That is the best way to help others find this content. Enjoy!

Bonus Episode: What I've Been Up To
Surprise!
Here is a bonus episode for you as we approach the 10th season of Selfish. I couldn't help but reflect back on all the lessons that I've learned from the experts I've interviewed over the last five years. This experience allowed me to have the courage to go out on my own and start my business and I love hearing from each of you when it has helped you as well. When I started this podcast I was in corporate America and was using this platform as a creative outlet. My bachelor’s degree is in broadcast journalism and I worked in the spa industry and married those two passions together to create Selfish. I had no idea the people I would have the chance to interview, I had no idea the opportunities the podcast would bring me, and I definitely had no idea I would use the inspiration of my guests to then start my own business.
Pretty cool journey, huh?
A story that inspired me recently was from one of my previous guests Allie Bjerk. She created a digital product, sold it on social media, and used the earnings she made from one day of sales and would turn around and spend it on Facebook ads the next day. With that strategy, she was able to become a millionaire in 10 months. I purchased her course in January and I'm now pleased to announce the digital product Social Media Success Shortcut.
This product combines all the tools needed for a small business owner to have success with their social media marketing strategy. I have worked with million and billion-dollar businesses, all the way to brand new startups. The social media tactics and strategy is the same no matter the size of your business. I have bundled those lessons along with social media prompts for a year, a dictionary of highly converting hashtags, templates, checklists, and many other bonuses that will make marketing your business quick and easy. The beauty of this program is that it teaches you to use all of these tools in under 30 minutes for the month. Yes, I said the month. So for under $30 and for under 30 minutes you too can have social media success.
One of my clients, Angel Yamraj, who owns a spa in a small town, came to me with frustration over her marketing. She said she didn’t know what to post, she had a million other things to do, and so social media always became the last thing she would think about. She had priority access to this guide, and here is what she had to say about it: "I purchased Allie's guide and I am now 100% confident in operating the social media strategy for my business! It’s amazing how quickly I was able to learn how to write better content that resonated with my customers, it truly changed my perspective on social media. Planning out content is no longer a task I dread doing, but instead it takes me just minutes to do, instead of the hours it was taking me. I have enough on my plate to stress about, I'm glad planning social media content will be something I never have to stress about again!"
Y’all, I really tried to make this an easy decision for you to make. With everything that I share with you in this program, $27 is an absolute no-brainer. If you are interested in learning more or purchasing the Social Media Success Shortcut, visit SocialWithAllie.com.
I say this every season but this upcoming group of experts will blow your mind. I'm really excited for you to hear their thoughts of self-care and their business savvy wisdom. If this podcast has been inspiring to you I would be so grateful if you would leave a review and share it with a friend. Producing this podcasting lights me up and I am so glad I have the opportunity to continue in this role and can bring these voices of inspiration to you each and every week.

9.2 - Sleep is a Skill
Okay, so we know sleep is important. I believe sleep is the foundation of self-care. So much is dependent on good sleep habits. However, I had NO idea the connection sleep has to so many different areas of our lives. I loved having Mollie McGlocklin on to share why Sleep is a Skill.
Mollie is the creator of Sleep Is A Skill, a company that optimizes how people sleep through a unique blend of technology, accountability, and behavioral change. The company was born from “scratching her own itch” after a lifetime of poor sleep habits culminated into a mega-challenging bout of insomnia for months without end. With a background in psychology & human behavior, she went down the rabbit hole to solve her own sleep disturbances without sleeping aids. She became fascinated with chronobiology, and by extension, its practical applications to restore a state of homeostasis not only to her sleep but also to her life as a whole. Knowing the difference between a life with sleep and without, she’s now dedicated her life to sharing the forgotten skill set of sleep.
In this episode, you will learn:
✨ Why sleep is important to your business
✨ Practices you can put in place to improve your sleep
✨ Some small changes to make for big sleep impact
✨ Which “gadgets” to use to track your sleep
✨ Which blue light glasses to use and which not to use, even down to the color!
✨ How sunlight affects your sleep and how much of it you should be getting each day
✨ What you should be doing before bed to get the best sleep
✨ We even chatted about the best light bulbs to use in your home to optimize your sleep!

9.1 - Why You HAVE to Tell Your Story
I just finished an interview on someone else's podcast. It's a branding podcast with a really large following and I was asked - what brand has made you smile lately?
That's a great question and luckily I was provided the questions ahead of time so I was able to give it some thought. I immediately started thinking about big brands and commercials I've seen on TV. I'm recording this on Superbowl weekend, so I knew there will probably be a few in the coming days we will all be talking about, but then I started thinking locally and I knew immediately how I was going to answer this.
The brand is the Kentucky Humane Society.
You see, about a week ago, a dog, named Ethan, was found minutes from death, just outside the front doors of their headquarters, he had been dropped there. A visitor saw him, and he was immediately brought into their facility for emergency care.
The Kentucky Humane Society staff posted about Ethan on their social media channels - initially to try to find out information about Ethan, because it was clear he had been severely neglected for many weeks.
But there were so many cheering Ethan on in the comments that every day we have gotten an update on Ethan via the Humane Society's social media channels and they just shared today that he is now walking on his own. Still very shaky, very weak, but able to walk without assistance.
Listen, to us, this story gives us chills, but their staff sees this type of story all the time. This is their job - to care for dogs and cats and find them loving homes.
The reason I bring this up, is KHS is simply telling their story and of something they do every day, every week.
Because of Ethan's story, donations are pouring in, it is pulling at everyone’s heartstrings. Every news channel in Louisville is sharing a daily update of Ethan. Adoption applications are coming in non-stop - all because they took the time to share.
What if they hadn't shared Ethan's story? Trust me, some of the images they have posted are hard to look at. But this is their reality - and it shows us the value of their organization in real-time.
This is a great lesson for us all that we have to tell our stories. It may seem boring to us, but social media allows us to have our own media platform to tell that story.
So who is your Ethan? It may not be a dog, it may be a customer transformation you've orchestrated, it could just be a testimonial you received. These are the stories you need to tell. No one else is going to do it for you.
If this is something you need help with - I do have a social media success shortcut on my website iwantfamefortune.com. You can purchase it for $27 - it helps pull stories like Ethan's from you so that you can fill your social media feed with strategic stories that have your followers lighting up for you and your business.
You'll also notice this season of Selfish has much more of a sales and marketing approach to the episodes. As I approach celebrating 2 years of owning Fame and Fortune - my world is spinning with the voices of the greatest business experts in the biz. If you aren't a business owner, don't worry - there is still all the goodness of self-care questions you know and love.
Enjoy!

8.1 - Raise Your Hand
This season of episodes seems to reflect the season of life we are all experiencing right now. There is an undertone of seizing opportunities.
Dr. Lyons, the late founder of Alltech, the company I worked for right out of college, used to always tell us to look for the opportunity in a crisis. He built an empire of natural animal supplements, multiple beer lines, liquor brands, coffee, and so much more. He never wasted moments moaning and groaning - he didn’t have time for it. He was always off to the next project. It kind of made me think about the quote “You can’t make people happy that don’t want to be.”
You see, if you don’t want to be successful when a crisis arises in life, you definitely don’t have to be. If you don’t want to look for the opportunity and just keep operating the way you always have, you do you!
What I learned from Dr. Lyons was you always have to be on our toes in business. You are always reading the room, anticipating what’s next. He did that time and time again. It was exhausting to think about how hard that man’s brain worked because we were all moving a mile a minute.
I don’t always think it has to be something huge that we are looking to take on. For example, I took the momentary calmness of quarantine to invest in myself and take a deep dive course on Facebook Ads. This was a full immersion into how to work with clients and double and triple their revenue using ads. It perfectly aligns with the digital marketing work I am doing with clients so I am glad I took that chance. I have already had the chance to work with clients and they are thrilled with the results.
You will find the guests I spoke with in Season 8 are very similar, they looked around, and said: “why not me?” We can learn from these leaders and how they looked for the opportunity in a crisis, raised their hands, and which allowed them to become who they are today.
Libbie Summers knew brands needed help telling their story, so she raised her hand.
Kim Woods saw first-hand in corporate America that leaders needed help tapping into their true potential, so she raised her hand.
Christie Kerner, couldn’t find a mascara she liked, so she raised her hand.
Chris Myles wanted to share with the world how to be an online entrepreneur, so he raised his hand.
Diana Olynick never wanted a female to struggle in life and business like she once did, so she raised her hand.
Elizabeth Sharrett experienced unexplainable health scares that she got to the bottom of and didn’t want anyone else to suffer as she did, so she raised her hand.
Samantha Gordon knows how to get zen in a crisis, so she raised her hand.
Shawn Harper saw how the NFL taught him to study his opponents and knew he could teach others to apply it to the corporate world, so he raised his hand.
Rachelle Calina saw small business owners struggling with their finances so she raised her hand.
Lots of amazing lessons to learn along the way with each of our Season 8 guests. I hope by listening it will inspire YOU to raise your hand.

7.1 - What's At Your Core?
Most of you know that I run Fame and Fortune - a digital marketing agency. And I am always being contacted by potential clients and I have some fantastic friends that throw opportunities my way frequently! One recently was to run the social media for a big-time entrepreneur. I loved the application - it asked questions I’ve never been asked on an application or in a job interview before. Some of them were obviously very relevant to the job by giving me a link to a blog post on their website and asking how I would write the caption for social media. It also asked for a link to a post I had written that I was most proud of, but that was tough because uh, but how do I pick just one!? But finally, the question that made me pause, it asked for my top 5 core values. Interesting.
It linked to an article that shares 500 core values in case I needed some inspiration. And of course, I did, but wow - so so many:
Just starting with the A’s:
Alert
Ambition
Anti-Corporate
Affection
Attentive
Approachable
Amusement
Okay, I won’t bore you, but I did spend a good amount of time reading through their suggestions. Finally, I listed:
1. Creativity
2. Fun
3. Professionalism
4. Curiosity
5. Organization
I found it really hard to pick just 5, I probably would have struggled even if they had let me choose 10. Have you ever thought about your core values as an employee or business owner? What would be in your top 5?
I can’t wait for you to hear the interviews in Season 7 - I never would have guessed when I started conducting interviews to start Selfish almost 5 years ago the inspiration I would find from each person, and that is especially true for Season 7. Enjoy!

Abby Kamen tells her journey into discovering her gifts, having the courage to listen to those gifts, and how she uses them to bless others.
Abby Kamen is an artist, author, clairvoyant, philanthropist, modern-day mystic, mom and a seeker.
Her awakening began with a gentle knock, a nudge from the Universe to notice serendipity. Then the knock turned into a forceful calling and she was overwhelmed by what Abby can only describe as a spiritual storm. Signs everywhere indicated it was time for her to pursue “her destiny.”
The door to activating her sixth sense flew open. By 2016, the camera found Abby and became her calling card, thus her pen name: Flash Mom. This inanimate object notably beckoned her to see the world from the broadest perspective possible.
As a result, the last few years have presented her with psychic abilities that have manifested in unbridled written and visual output. Both spring from a place of untapped potential and contain messages of wisdom from the beyond for the next generation.
As a guide to the future, Abby’s work is intended to help you activate your highest self, navigate your life purpose, and elevate the vibration of humanity.

With her warm and approachable style, she now shows others how to escape their struggles with food and reclaim their optimal health and well-being.

5.6 - Hitting The Note
Bill Protzmann has an incredible story of how music has blessed his life, in more ways than one. I really enjoyed this conversation about incorporating music into your life for better self-care.
Bill Protzmann started piano lessons at three years old. He grew up playing and performing and realized very early on that the discipline of playing the piano was also a behavioral healthcare practice. When he began seeking non-traditional audiences — Alzheimer’s patients and people struggling with physical or emotional injuries, stressed-out business people, parents, caregivers — he began to understand the true power of music as a tool.
He has been a witness to the power of music throughout his life and speaks openly about how he has used music as self-intervention in his own behavioral health care, including confronting suicidal tendencies. His volunteer work in the field brings him into constant contact with people who are or have been homeless, abused substances, are combat-injured or are caregivers.

5.5 - Racing Forward
Donna Barton Brothers was born into horse racing. Her mother, Patti Barton, was one of the first half dozen women to be licensed as a jockey in the United States—that was in 1969. Throughout Patti Barton’s career (and until four years after her retirement) she was the leading female rider in the nation by the number of wins. Patti retired from racing in 1984 with just over 1,200 wins.
Both Donna’s brother, Jerry, and sister, Leah, were jockeys but by the time Donna started riding professionally in 1987 her mother, brother and sister had all retired from riding. That’s when Donna’s racing career took off. She rode from 1987 to 1998 and retired in 1998 as the second leading female jockey in the United States by money earned. She holds that title still, with a record 1,130 wins. 1998 was also the year she married Frank Brothers, the well-known Thoroughbred trainer (since retired), conformation expert, and Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
In 2014, Donna was honored by Sport’s Illustrated Magazine, when she was awarded Best Sideline Reporter of the year for the trademark qualities that make her so beloved by her fans. She’s approachable, and she’s always on-point with her interviews, delivering relatable facts that her viewers care about.

5.1 - Brave & Scared
You can’t be brave and scared at the same time. Have you ever wanted to be brave, but couldn’t shake the fear?
I love this idea that you can’t be going down this road if you are actually want to go down that road. It forces you to decide: bravery or fear.
Biblically, we aren’t supposed to fear. The Bible states “do not fear” 365 times, one for each day of the year. This is because if we were afraid that would mean we aren’t putting our full trust in God.
When have you been faced with the opportunity to choose between the two? Which one do you tend to choose?
I had the opportunity to write a chapter in the 3rd volume of The Women of Courage book. It is similar to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. It has inspiring stories that uplift and warm your heart.
My chapter was all about the cliches I remember during times when I am scared, but remind me of courage. I’ll share a few with you:
It’s okay to not be okay - this is one that I feel like only came about recently. But this one challenges me on a regular basis as I like to hide my feelings and figure things out on my own. This cliche tells me that you should share your feelings and allow others to help you through it. Being courageous is not always about being “okay.”
Success doesn’t happen overnight. - yup, this is obviously true with business, but it also applies in other areas of our lives, like working out or mindfulness. How many of y’all out there work out for a week and look in the mirror and think, ummm why am I not seeing progress?? Is it just me?? The first time I practiced meditating I wanted to give up, because I’m not perfect at it.
A rising tide raises all ships - this is about how uplifting others does nothing to your ship but raise it up too. Imagine the good vibes around us all if we did this more often.
Leave things better than you found it - I like to think about the handful of times Ive gone canoeing or hiking - you never want to litter ,and of course, you can even pick up trash along the way. But really I like to think about what is your legacy, how will people remember the time you spent on something. Will you be making it better? Will your contributions be memorable?
Stick to your guns - shout out to my mama for this one - she tells my sister and I this on a regular basis. Know what you stand for and stick to it.
God is in control - this is where that whole choosing bravery over fear comes into play. Why would God give us the idea to pursue a dream if he didn’t want us to pursue it, if he didn’t think could pursue it. If you have a dream or something you want to achieve, go all in, 110% and know that God is for you and he has your back every step of the way - even if those steps don’t fall into place exactly how you thought they would. So change the word bravery to trust and now what do you choose? Trust or doubt? Will you trust Him or doubt Him?
I can’t imagine what my life would look like if I hadn’t dove head first into this podcast world. Trust me, it took a year to research podcasting, and then another year making the first season before I actually decided to share my work with the world. There was a lot whole of imposter syndrome going on during those two years. But I felt a pull to keep on going. What would have happened if I had doubted? Doubted myself and doubted God?
In just a few weeks I will be traveling to DC to teach international bloggers about using a podcast to help them build their brand. I teach in-person courses on how to start a podcast, and later this year, I will be launching my first online podcast class. Where would all this be if I had chose to tuck this dream away? I had no idea 4 years ago that one podcast would lead to these opportunities, but isn’t that the real beauty - we don’t know where these things will lead?

4.10 - The Kentucky Gent
I love Josh’s story, because someone saw the potential in him long before he saw it himself. I can certainly relate to this, and you will too, as you hear all the amazing opportunities he is able to experience now because he took a chance.
Hey, my name is Josh Johnson and I am, quite by accident, The Kentucky Gent. This all came to be without me even realizing what I was getting myself into. I was doing a lot of traveling for my job at the time and often found myself being asked where I was from, and everyone seemed quite surprised that my answer was always Kentucky.
The Kentucky Gent started as a way for me to show that Southern boys have style too. Since the site’s inception it has expanded into a fully-fledged men’s life and style blog; consider it the worldwide web’s “Gateway to the South” where I share my passions for fashion, food, grooming, and travel.
I’m a southern boy at heart with a love for bourbon and beer, fashion and food, and sharing my stories and experiences with you, my incredible readers.

4.9 - Destined Designer
Once you hear Maizie’s story, you will realize she was always meant to be an entrepreneur, because she’s been practicing for this role since she was a child. I think you will find great inspiration from Maizie’s journey, because even she can’t believe some of the amazing things she already been able to accomplish.
Maizie Clarke provides gifts that delight both the giver and the receiver. The namesake of the business, Maizie Clarke, has spent years honing her craft through her arts education and practice. Starting as a side business illustrating whimsical, custom house portraits, Maizie has grown and expanded her portfolio to include boutiques, hotels, museums, golf courses and more! She still finds joy in creating custom gifts, but has brought to life colorful wholesale collections and custom wholesale solutions for many different types of clients.
Maizie Clarke is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, where Maizie lives with her four-legged good luck charm, Hattie. Originally hailing from Virginia, Maizie is a graduate of the Episcopal High School. Having always had a passion for design and all things beautiful, she went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design from Marymount University and then her Master in Exhibition Design from the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, D.C. Maizie genuinely loves her craft and the joy she sees it bring to her family, friends and clients!

4.8 - The Home Sanctuary
Katie and Kari are living out my dreams to be a professional organizer, so I loved this conversation. However, I had no idea how emotional and physiological their job really is. I loved that their connection was instantaneous and they’ve been tidying up clients homes ever since.
Wanna know more about Katie & Kari?
We both have 1 daughter and 2 sons
We are both one of three sisters (oh the drama!)
We are both type A with a sense of humor (you have to laugh at yourself, right?!)
We both love coffee, yoga, wine, local restaurants, home renovations, design, styling and organizing (of course!)
We clearly have the same taste in clothing as we often show up to meetings and jobs dressed alike
Katie has a degree in Occupational Therapy and Kari has a degree in Social Work (both come in handy in this line of work!)
Between the two of us--we’ve gone through 6 moves and sold our homes immediately because of our love of beautiful things and attention to detail!
Neither of us grew up in Louisville! Katie is from Iowa and Kari from Central Kentucky
We started The Home Sanctuary because we believe everyone deserves the peace of mind and happiness that comes with an organized, functional home.

4.7 - SEO CEO

4.6 - Color Today Pretty

4.4 - All Things CBD
I love the passion behind the work Tyler Lloyd does - he has so much knowledge about CBD - but also you can tell he has a heart for helping people and making them feel their best. I was so curious to find out more about CBD and if you are as interested as I was you will definitely enjoy what Tyler has to say.

Tyler enjoys exploring the city on his bike, drinking strong coffee, and telling stories through photography, video, podcasts, and the written word. 4.3 - The Millionaire Recruiter
Brianna Rooney is not nicknamed the Millionaire Recruiter just for fun, she is a super smart business woman and really cares about individuals finding their dream job and a career that fulfills them. I love the advice she gives to job seekers - surprising tips you wouldn’t expect to hear from a recruiter.

Brianna came out with a 3-hour eCourse that is interactive, professionally well done and trains you like she would if you were in her office. She guarantees you do well with resume help and an hour consultation with her or one of her success partners in crime.

4.2 - Modern Meditation
I took what Dr. Amanda O’Bryan shared with us in this episode and put it into practice since we spoke. I have never had someone explain meditation so clearly and make it seem so obtainable. I know you will walk away with a new perspective on meditation and will want to give it a try if you haven’t yet.
Dr. Amanda O’Bryan, PhD enjoys the challenge of combining science and spirituality to create a new method of teaching, and a new perspective on meditation that is both modern and meaningful. Before becoming a full-time meditation teacher, she worked as a Psychology professor and brings that knowledge of human behavior and the brain to her meditation teachings. Amanda teaches workshops, creates online meditation courses and works one-on-one with individuals to deepen their practice, and bring mindfulness to all aspects of their lives. You can also find her doing live meditations on Instagram, on Insight Timer, or teaching donation-based classes for beginners and advanced practitioners at The Inner Warrior in Louisville.
“It’s not that your life has changed, it's not like the things that stress you out have disappeared, but the way you react to them changes.”

4.1 - Celebrate the Pause
I have been doing the 21-Day Meditation Experience with Oprah and Deepak Chopra. I know, right? Two of the best to learn meditation from. It’s an app that encourages a daily practice of meditation to create a lifelong habit. Oprah opens each practice with insight on why this meditation will be important for your life. Day 7, entitled “Obstacles to Grace Melt Away,” she opens with this:
“When you feel struggle, pause, try to take a step back, give yourself a moment’s time to find your center. That struggle is a gift, a whisper, it is your graceful, true self, tapping you on the shoulder a little bit trying to remind you, ever so gently, to look again. Because you always get to choose, do you react to an obstacle as a negative or do you embrace it as an opportunity to respond with the open-hearted knowledge that all will be well?”
Deepak, I feel like it’s okay to call him by his first name just like we do Oprah, right? Then walks you through the meditation practice. On this particular day he explains:
“Once we start the practice of gratitude, our perspective opens up. We start to see how the universe generously supports us in countless ways. From this shift in perception optimism naturally emerges, because the ups and downs of daily existence, hale beside the infinite generosity of nature just as a candle fades in the noon day sun.”
I love that visual – our problems can be the candle, but if your sunlight, aka your gratitude for life, is shining so brightly, you won’t even be able to see the candle. But when your world is dim, sometimes all you can see is that flame. It’s funny how making a change in something as small as perspective can define how we view our entire life.
Finally, Oprah closes the episode by sharing: “There is a gift in every moment, good or bad. Allow the wisdom of difficulty to speak to you and lead you to where your life truly wants to go.”
When she puts it that way, to me those obstacles become freeing. When you allow those things to happen, it is just life/ the universe/ God correcting you where it wants you to go.
This reminds me of a quote I saw recently from musical composer Truman Fisher, he said, “The pause is as important as the note.”
I am so guilty of wanting to get to that next note, sometimes before I’ve even finished playing the current note. The notes are where I shine, the notes are what I am proud of, and the notes give me joy. But why can’t those pauses fill us in the same way? It is opposite of what our society preaches, being busy is glorified and rest is lazy. But think of how much goodness we miss, by not enjoying the pause, because we mistook it to be an obstacle.
I’m so excited for you to hear the experts I’ve interviewed for Season Four.
My interest in meditation grew after my conversation with Dr. Amanda O’Bryan and she shares mind-blowing meditation techniques with us. Stephanie Feger also preaches the importance of perspective as she encourages you to “color today pretty.”
Maybe you will find inspiration from the dynamic female duos in Kelsey & Lauren, harvesting seeds in women entrepreneurs or Katie & Kari teaching us all how to turn our homes into sanctuaries.
I went straight to the horse's mouth for my interview with Tyler Lloyd from LOU CBD. I wanted to find out all about the latest CBD craze. I also talked to Josh Johnson, aka The Kentucky Gent, about how he gets to travel the world, eat all the food, and call it work.
And I know you will love the stories of blood, sweat, and tears that will light you on fire for your dreams when you hear the bravery from Brianna Rooney, Jenna Ahern and Maizie Clarke. These ladies are doing big things, and I’m blown away and how they juggle all the hats they wear.
Whichever episode becomes your favorite, I hope we can all find a place in life that allow us to celebrate the notes AND the rests. That we can remember to take time to meditate, breath and

3.9 - The Renegade Nutritionist
Amanda Nighbert is so chock full of knowledge about nutrition, sometimes I don’t think she is human. She freely shares valuable information with the world, which is just one of the reasons you’ll call her The Renegade Nutritionist.
“We are living in a society where we are under-nourished and over-fed. And what that means is that we are eating a lot of calories, but the calories we are eating are not high quality nutrient calories, they are basically like empty calories. So we are walking around overweight, sick and malnourished.”
Amanda Nighbert is a registered dietitian specializing in weight loss nutrition, a fitness enthusiast, and a working mom of two. Amanda is passionate about motivating, supporting and educating people to meet their wellness goals. She has worked in the field of weight loss for the past 18 years helping thousands of patients. She is so excited to have the opportunity to work with even more people via her online programs. She is an avid reader and feels that the science behind weight loss, diet, and nutrition is always changing. This rapid change can create confusion and frustration with the average person trying to be successful at weight loss. Her goal is to bring the latest, cutting edge strategies and techniques to her clients in the most concise and educational manner.
Amanda is a strong believer that dieting is temporary, something you start and stop. Therefore it is more important to focus on lifestyle changes to truly see long term weight loss success. Her goal is to teach her clients simple yet effective lifestyle changes they can make and easily sustain to see lasting results. Success does not have to be about perfection but rather more consistency. Amanda believes in implementing strategies that work in the real world, with real people, who lead real, hectic and often crazy lives.
“It’s not necessarily new and recent, but I do feel like the most critical shift we are able to make in our nutritional profile is all around fat. We have lived in a fat-free, low-fat generation since 1977.”

3.8 - Mind In Motion
Ever since I met Leigh Weinraub several years ago, I have been captivated by her energy and quiet confidence. With even just the audio, I have a suspicion you’ll feel the same way.
“Fear is the universal roadblock for all of us. It’s just that each person develops their own unique, intricate system to coping with the fear and they develop a lot defense mechanisms and psychological coping strategies from very early on in their life to deal with that fear. Fear is inevitable and you can’t avoid it, and you have to learn how to cope with it.”
Leigh Weinraub is an entrepreneurial powerhouse and renowned speaker; a triple threat visionary with intelligence, passion and a lifetime desire to help others reach their personal best. She also still has a wicked backhand.
Leigh was an avid tennis player growing up, rising quickly through the national junior tennis ranks before accepting a full scholarship to play at Northwestern University. After graduation she coached the tennis teams at Dartmouth and Northwestern, leading the latter to consecutive Big Ten championships and a top three national ranking.
Through coaching she saw the need firsthand for using psychology in sports and enrolled in the Masters program at Northwestern for Counseling Psychology. Upon graduation she built a thriving practice, working with both athletes and non-athletes, using innovative “walk and talk” sessions to instill confidence and empowerment.
While working with a young athlete she wrote BREATHE upside down on the bottom corner of a shirt to help her focus during a tennis match. Others started asking for the same. So she printed dozens, her clients asked for more. Word got around and eventually sparked the Mind in Motion movement - apparel, accessories, bags and journals, all focused on the visual cues of words to remind each of us to be our best selves.

“When the mind is focusing on and concise of positive words, you are going to increase the chances of having positive emotions which inevitable can create healing and strength.”

3.7 - Style Icon
André Wilson is a force - I love that he knows what needs to happen and he gets it done. Whether that is putting a fashion show on or being a brutal honest about your wardrobe.
“A trend is going to come and go. The low-rise skinny jean - that wasn’t for everybody. It really…trust me, it was NOT for everybody.”
André Wilson is President/CEO of Style Icon, LLC. Founded in 2010, the style, fashion and brand development company focuses on empowering men and women through style and non verbal communication.

“Let’s start where you are. You have to give yourself some self-love right now, where you are. You are beautiful, you are breathing, you are alive. You are on your way to somewhere.”

3.5 - Sleep With Me
I love the story of compassion that Drew Ackerman shares. Through his struggle with insomnia he developed a tool to help others fall asleep, and even though it can be tough to keep continuing to create content he is motivated that there are people in the word going through pain that he can help ease through his podcast.
Drew Ackerman is the creator and host of Sleep With Me, the one-of-a-kind bedtime story podcast featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Buzzfeed, Mental Floss, and Dr. Oz. Born out of Drew's childhood insomnia, Sleep With Me was inspired by late-night comedy radio, which was the only thing that helped him fall asleep. Created in 2013, Sleep With Me combines the pain of insomnia with the relief of laughing and turns it into a unique storytelling podcast. Drew's stories on the show are inspired by his childhood as the oldest of six children and past jobs as a fuzzy dice and iron-on patch salesperson, fruit fly monitor for the State of California, and librarian for one of the largest jails in the country. Through Sleep With Me, Drew has dedicated himself to help those who feel alone in the deep dark night and just need someone to tell them a bedtime story.

“ Who am I to give up on this idea to just give in and want certainty when I know what that feels like, what they’re going through. Even though I haven’t been through that exact circumstance.”

Emily Ho’s passion for blogging and helping brands tell their stories blends seamlessly into her encouragement of body positivity. I love her ability to know what she stands for and be able to share that with so many people.

Emily's unique background of corporate brand and product management plus her position as a digital influencer leads to informed, results-oriented programs for clients.
She earned her undergraduate degree and MBA from the University of Kentucky, and currently resides in Louisville.

“I have found that I am getting more and more selfish, and what happens when I do that is I thrive. More people read or more people interact or my business grows or I become happier. So I think we have to really prioritize ourselves and do things in a way that is not always pleasing others in order to help advance ourselves so that we can be the best people for those around us.”

3.3 - Leading With A Purpose
I’ve never met someone so passionate about growing other people than Mike Hilton. Mike is such a positive person and an inspiration to be around. You will be instantly motivated to find your passion and take action today.
“Anytime we stubbed our toe it an obstacle, is really just a highlight reel in the making. If you never hit the obstacles, you will never really have the highlight reel.”
Mike Hilton believes that everyone has a responsibility to use their talents to positively impact the world around them. This idea took root at the University of Dayton, a community based on servant leadership. It gained momentum through teaching high school and playing an active role in the lives of emerging leaders. It was published in Mike’s book, The Next Great You. And it continues to take shape at home in Lexington, KY, a vibrant community that brings ideas to life.
At home in Kentucky, Mike is the proud husband and dad of Team Hilton. He’s a believer in the powerful ability of food to bring people together, and is always looking for opportunities to break bread (or chili, or BBQ, or grilled things). And when it’s time to recharge, all he needs is his hiking boots and a dirt path.
“Have the self-confidence to realize you are going to be able to handle that unexpected turn when it comes. It may hurt and it may not turn out the way you want, but you might as well just get walking and enjoy the ride a little bit. “

3.2 - Grounded In Reality
Amy Kaufman has such a fun job! While it probably wasn’t fun to be banned from the Bachelor set, I love her story of being able to make the best of that situation. I can’t wait for you all to hear the insider scoop she lays out for us in this interview.
Amy Kaufman is a staff writer at the Los Angeles Times, where she has covered film, celebrity, and pop culture since 2009. On the beat, she reports from industry events like the Academy Awards, the Sundance Film Festival and the Grammys. In addition to profiling hundreds of stars--Lady Gaga, Julia Roberts, Stevie Nicks, Jane Goodall--she has broken major investigative stories on sexual harassment in Hollywood. Amy currently lives in Los Angeles with her Australian Shepherd, Riggins, and dreams of living in a Laurel Canyon tree house.
Even if you have never watched an episode of The Bachelor, you will be so amazed at some of the insider information Amy shares in her conversation with me. Banned by ABC, Amy could no longer attend press visits to the show tapings and cover the show for the Los Angeles Times, so she took her writings elsewhere. Amy wrote the book Bachelor Nation: Inside the World of America's Favorite Guilty Pleasure and shares insider information on the operations of The Bachelor.
“We’re not actually that different than these people on the show. Getting to interview so many of them and breaking that image down, was refreshing for me.”

3.1 - And That's Okay
My husband Brandon and I have a phrase we use often, it’s “And that’s okay.” As we recap our days, we will mention something we wanted to get done, but never got around to doing. “And that’s okay,” the other one will say. It’s our way of giving each other the forgiveness we needed to give ourselves.
We say it so much, Henna gets to use it. She lays in bed until the afternoon, and we don’t want to make her move to make the bed, so we will say, “Henna’s extra tired today, and that’s okay,” as we move on to something else.
The timing of this season of episodes is never what I intended it to be. I always think I am going to be far more proactive with my free time and want to sit down and edit the episodes in the week or two following my interview. I frequently share how editing the episodes is my least favorite part about hosting a podcast, however the conversations I have with people from all over the world make it worth it, but nonetheless, I procrastinate for far too long.
Of course, the timing always seems to work out perfectly in the long run. This time as I was editing during my Christmas break and knew this would come out around the New Year, many of the episodes reminded of the various resolutions we establish with ourselves this time of the year. You can find mine here. So much of this season is wrapped up in improving yourself or going after those dreams.
The problem is, we often forget to tell ourselves how much we have accomplished or were able to experience before we got to those resolutions. I can beat myself up for not editing those podcast interviews, but I wouldn’t be recognizing the amazing time I’ve had in my new job or the new friends I have gotten to enjoy.
Selfish, to me, is much more than the massage we take time out for each month, or the bubble bath we take on Sunday night to ward off the Sunday Scaries, but its about keeping our mental mind game in check. Instead of having anxiety over the 10 pounds you resolved to lose this year, think back to the amazing meals you were able to have with your husband during date nights. Sometimes we may choose not to get up and go to the gym in the morning, because we just have to read the last chapter of the book we're loving. You may not say yes to every friend that invites you to an event, because you are having a great time at home. What a blessing that is, that we have the ability to experience new restaurants, that we found a book that demands all our attention, and that we have a home we enjoy being in.
I am eager for you to dive into the stories of Mike Hilton and Bri Seeley who want nothing more than for individuals to be leading with purpose. They have developed tools to encourage you to do that, while giving you permission to leap. Amy Kaufman and Drew Ackerman took unfortunate situations and made them into brilliant business decisions. You couldn’t have made up these stories of redemption if you tried! André Wilson and Leigh Weinraub really break things down psychologically for us. André looks at why we are dress ourselves a certain way and Leigh wants you to look within to find that motivation you need. Emily Ho shares how having an audience changed the script she was telling them and herself. Amanda Nighbert is chock full of the knowledge and solutions you’ve been looking for when it comes to managi

1.1 - Where It Begins
When I made the decision to start Selfish it was fueled by many different motivators. One, I was working in the spa industry where self-care is preached and I whole-heartedly support that. Two, I had a radio show in college and that was really fun. And three, and probably the most important, I genuinely love hearing people’s stories. So often we get stuck in the ruts and don’t celebrate the wins, but when you look back on someone’s entire journey you see the purpose of those ruts and you can cheer on the victories.
So really, this show is nowhere near what I thought it would become, and yet, it is exactly what I wanted. I get to share with you some incredible journeys of some incredibly brave people. In the craziness of their ups and downs they have shared how they went after their goals with intensity, while not losing sight of themselves.
One of my guests Craig Williard explained it in his interview:
“I like to use the analogy of a cordless drill. You have a brand-new battery and you put it on the drill. And you hold it, and continue to hold it. Eventually it will die. You have to recharge it so it can continue to provide help. Selfishness is that recharge. It’s taking time to do something that gives you that energy.”
Another, Erica Gragg explained it as:
“To be selfish often times is a privilege. To have the time and resources, but to even have the knowledge that you know it’s good and okay to take care of yourself. But truly, you must tap back into yourself and reconnect and discover what makes your soul sing.”
Although this journey took me much longer than I had ever thought, I am so proud and can’t wait to get started on Season Two. So please continue to listen, share these episodes with someone who will enjoy them, and I hope the stories I have delivered inspire you to focus on what makes your soul sing.
