Many African American Muslims are unfortunately stereotyped by those outside of their immediate community and tend to make many of their preferences regarding marriage based upon them. Some of these preferences range from not marrying someone who has children from a previous marriage for fear of unhealthy engagements with the ex husband/ex wife, to not marrying within their own culture due fears that may be realistic but not necessarily systemic intraculturally.
