Journalists are especially vulnerable to hackers trying to access sensitive, confidential data. With growing threats against press freedom around the world, reporters are frequent targets for both public and private sector snooping. It is more important than ever to protect data, drafts, and sources from prying eyes. In this Update-1 podcast, Dr. Andy Yen, CEO and co-founder of ProtonMail, speaks with NPC Broadcast/Podcast team member Shannon Fisher about cybersecurity for journalists. From Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to self-destructing email, there are many options available to journalists who seek to protect their sources, communication, and work. These services and programs, many of which are free to use, make it virtually impossible for outsiders to hack into device storage and email accounts. They provide peace of mind to both journalists and their sources that sensitive discussions will remain private.

Certified Medical Interpreter Kelly Grzech talks to Shannon about the right of all non-English speaking patients to a medical interpreter. A misunderstanding between doctor and patient can have dire, even fatal, consequences, which can be avoided by using a medical interpreter. Sadly, many undocumented people avoid seeking healthcare for fear of deportation because this right is not widely known. The right to language assistance is guaranteed by the Affordable Care Act, Section 1557, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VI.

Start by Believing: Larry Nassar's Crimes, the Institutions that Enabled Him, and the Brave Women Who Stopped a Monster. ESPN's John Barr and Dan Murphy on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher
Start by Believing reveals the win-at-all-costs culture in elite athletics and higher education that enabled a quarter century of heinous crimes. In Start by Believing, John Barr and Dan Murphy investigate the largest sex abuse scandal to impact the sporting world. Newyorican Girl: Julia Torres Barden on The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher
Shannon's guest this week, Julia Torres Barden, an award-winning journalist, gubernatorial appointee, and PTSD survivor. She endured a violent New York City childhood as a Puerto Rican girl from the South Bronx, which she chronicles in her book, “NEWYORICANGIRL…Surviving my Spanglish Life.” This novel/memoir is a gritty tale of trauma and painful cultural assimilation while pursuing the American dream. After navigating a traumatic childhood that included rape, her mother's conflicted life as the mistress of a powerful CEO, alcoholic parents, and forced adoption, Julia found herself trapped in New York City on 9/11.
"In 2013, I pushed my luck and I lived. I stared down my deepest fears and didn’t back down. I shared my vulnerability with strangers and they embraced me. I took so many risks that I exhausted myself to the brink of disaster. I looked the boogeyman straight in the eye and he blinked first; leaving me victorious and free," said Julia about her memoir.

Learn the Signs of Ovarian Cancer: Esther Windmueller on The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher
This episode of The Authentic Woman is dedicated to the memory of Esther Windmueller, who gave so much of her time and energy in her final years to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.
Ovarian Cancer is difficult to detect and, therefore, has a high mortality rate because it is often not discovered until it has reached a late stage. 22,000 women receive this diagnosis every year – and 14,000 women die of it annually.
Shannon speaks with Esther Windmueller, an ovarian cancer survivor who founded the nonprofit organization Cancer Dancer. Esther's organization helps women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer understand the disease, learn all of their options and become aware of all of the newest treatments available - as well as joining these women together in a supportive community so they can connect with others who truly understand their journey.
We discuss the warning signs of ovarian cancer so our listeners can be informed and recognize a potential problem as early as possible. Through awareness lives can be saved. “The most rewarding part of working with CancerDancer is the feedback from those who say we have really, really helped them through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Hearing this keeps us going.” ~ Esther Windmueller

Beagle Freedom Project: Shannon Keith on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher
Shannon is excited to welcome her guest this week: Shannon Keith, President and Founder of the Beagle Freedom Project (BFP). Keith's organization fights for animal rights on many levels, from fighting for legislation requiring humane treatment of laboratory animals to physically rescuing beagles used in laboratory testing and helping them assimilate into life outside of the lab - and ultimately finding them loving homes.
Beagles are the most popular breed for lab use because of their friendly, docile, trusting, forgiving, people-pleasing personalities. Most beagles used in experiments have never seen grass, the sun, or anything outside the walls of a laboratory. They have received little or no affection & are often afraid of people. Beagle Freedom Project is doing some amazing work in bringing joy & love to these animals.

Pat Bertram on The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher
Washington Irving wrote: “There is in every true woman’s heart a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity; but which kindles up, and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.” As I read these words a decade ago, I could see her, a drab woman, defeated by life, dragging herself through her days in the normal world, but in an abnormal world of strife and danger, she would come alive and inspire others. And so Kate Cummings, the hero of my novel A Spark of Heavenly Fire was born.
"I am thrilled to be the first guest on Shannon Fisher’s new show, The Authentic Woman. It’s fitting that that this book is being highlighted because Shannon herself is a true woman who embodies the spark of heavenly fire the world so desperately needs." ~ author Pat Bertram

An Open Dialogue about Race: Tanya Tatum on The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher
Shannon talks to Tanya Tatum, moderator and producer of The Tatum Talks. The Tatum Talks began as a series of informal discussions on Facebook and later grew into an open forum for discussing topics affecting the African-American community. Prior to producing TTT, she was the co-Host and Producer for “Live in the Vocal Booth” on BKS1Radio, a show that focused on national headlines. Tanya serves as a regular op/ed contributor to EURweb.com and has been featured on The Ricky Smiley Morning Show, Essence Magazine and UniteWomen.org. Tanya earned B.B.A. in Marketing from James Madison University.
Tanya has a specific passion for the progression of African-Americans in this country, and tonight we will discuss issues about race that are often misunderstood. We hope to open some eyes, educate some minds and open a dialogue that we hope will continue past this show. The only way to understand the experience of another person is to hear it in their own words. Tonight, the topic will be race relations and the differences in several women's issues between African Americans and Caucasians.

This podcast re-posted with permission from the National Press Club. To see the original podcast page for this episode, please go to the NPC website: https://www.press.org/news-multimedia/audio/washington-press-corps-becoming-more-digital-and-specialized
NPC member Shannon Fisher interviews the Pew Research Center's Associate Research Director Jesse Holcomb about Pew's just-released report detailing the changing composition of the Washington Press Corps and the source of D.C.-based information that ultimately reaches local newspapers. The report, titled "Today’s Washington Press Corps More Digital, Specialized," describes the changing landscape of journalists in Washington, with niche publications now outnumbering both daily newspapers and wire services. Pew compared stories from D.C.-based correspondents with those of local reporters covering Washington. The results of the study raise questions about the relative cost-effectiveness of using D.C.-based correspondents, as well as the relevance to local readers, when compared to acquiring information from wire services. Update-1 explores the findings of the report and how they might affect the future of the Washington press corps.

Heather discovered her love of Musical Theatre at an early age, while traveling the world as an "Army Brat" during her father's career in the U.S. Army. Centennial Rally for Equal Rights: History Meets Politics on The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher
Tonight, Shannon welcomes three women’s rights activists who have been active in government relations in the Commonwealth of Virginia for decades: Donna Granski, Candy Graham, and Eileen Davis. The four women will have a roundtable discussion about the historical significance of a women’s suffrage rally held on the steps of the Virginia Capitol 100 years ago, as well as the progression of the issues being addressed at that time - many of which are still being heatedly debated.
The women will discuss an upcoming series of events planned to commemorate the centennial anniversary of that women’s rights rally – a joint venture between The American Association of University Women, The League of Women Voters, The National Organization for Women, and Women Matter. Tonight’s show will provide details about the upcoming events and a discussion of the quest for equal rights for women in the United States - especially those relating to the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
