71: Ukraine & Russia: To Whom Does The Land Belong? Discussing Geographic Sovereignty With David T. Koyzis Ph.D
Episode Type: Listen to Learn
In this Listen to Learn discussion on the Share Life podcast, I'm speaking with David Koyzis. David holds a PhD in government and international studies from the University of Notre Dame, taught undergraduate political science for thirty years, and is the author of two books and multiple chapters and articles.
In a prior episode of the podcast, David and I discussed his book, Political Visions & Illusions: A Survey and Christian Critique of Contemporary Ideologies (affiliate) where he synthesizes the ideologies (idolatries) of liberalism, conservatism, nationalism, democratism, socialism into a larger meta-story.
In this conversation, we're discussing geographic sovereignty. To whom does the land belong? This is the root question that came to my mind when Russia fully invaded Ukraine in 2022. Also, with Kuwait in the ’90s, and Taiwan now, we have situations with conflicting claims of geography and populaces. In the United States, we have differences in the ownership of American land between settlers and natives, and past conflicts about whether the states are obligated to remain in the union or whether America can break off from Great Britain. This conversation is geared towards helping us make sense of and navigate these conflicts.

70: Living in an After Virtue Emotivist World — With Jesse Nigro
Episode Type: Listen to Learn
In this listen-to-learn episode of the Share Life podcast, I'm speaking with Jesse Nigro about Alasdair Macintyre's suggestion in After Virtue, emotivism, the enlightenment's failures, and whether we should choose Aristotle or Nietzsche.
Jesse is the editor-in-chief at the North American Anglican since 2012. He lives in Omaha, Nebraska with his wife and children where he teaches philosophy at a classical high school. Jesse has a BA in philosophy and an MA in theology.
My reason for asking him on the show resulted from reading his four-part essay series on the North American Anglican site titled Secular stories. After reading five of Alasdair Macintyre's books, I wanted someone who knew Macintyre's work well so that we could discuss these ideas and better make sense of them. We explore these concepts and others in this conversation.
A Quick Note About This RecordingIf you're watching on video, you'll notice that Jesse's daughter Isabel is joining us in the conversation. Throughout the recording, you will hear her chiming in from time to time, particularly at the end. We hope you won't mind these mild noises:-)

69: Political Visions & Illusions: A Survey & Christian Critique of Contemporary Ideologies — With Author David T. Koyzis
Episode Type: Book Discussion
In this book discussion on the Share Life podcast, I'm speaking with David Koyzis, author of Political Visions & Illusions: A Survey and Christian Critique of Contemporary Ideologies. David holds a PhD in government and international studies from the University of Notre Dame and taught undergraduate political science for thirty years.
David argues in his book that what we believe about politics matters. In a unique and overarching way, David synthesizes the ideologies, and what he also calls the idolatries of liberalism, conservatism, nationalism, democratism, and socialism into a larger meta-story. He explains these ideologies' points of view, where they aim to provide a redemptive human story, and how their redemptive story fails to recognize the deeper problem and achieve their political ambitions.
The book is a fabulous framework for navigating politics while also transcending the emotional pull that comes with political crises or deeply rooted political belief-based discussions. We're often driven by these ideologies without recognizing how they're fueling our point of view and behavior.

Episode Type: Blog Reading
Click here to donate to Madison's fund.
Click here to donate to Jason's fund.
---
In July, we — Jason & Madison — are going to Mexico to serve the local community by volunteering with our church team in local children’s homes led by Back2Back Ministries.
Your donation will make our mission possible. Money will not only help us get there, but it also funds the special projects undertaken while we’re there.
This trip is an opportunity for us — you included — to help the impoverished communities of Monterrey Mexico flourish by living the good news we proclaim about Jesus while serving the local community’s children (often facing traumatic recovery and abandonment) in practical life-giving ways.
It’s also a chance for us to grow in the love of God, strengthen our relationship with each other, get outside of our American bubble, and explore our family’s Mexican heritage. By donating, you’re helping to make the world, and this specific part of Mexico, a better place.
For us to make this happen, we need to raise $4,000 dollars —$2,000 each. Will you help?
Even if you only give five dollars, it would make a difference!
To donate, use the links on this page or send a check to 692 Barley Hill Lane, Sugar Hill, Georgia 30518 made payable to global(x).
Whether you are able to financially contribute or not, we’d value your continued prayers.

59: Christian Mindfulness & Meditation — With Sarah Grace Young of Calming Grace
Episode Type: Listen to Learn
Thank you for joining this Listen-To-Learn episode of the Share Life Podcast. I'm joined by Sarah Grace Young, a follower of Jesus, wife, ex-pat, teacher, creative, introvert, and a blogger at CalmingGrace.com; encouraging Christian mindfulness and meditation. She seeks to calm anxious minds by God's grace: and with faith, mindfulness, and journaling.
I'm excited to share this conversation with Sarah because the topic of Christian mindfulness and meditation is critical in our walk with Jesus (as difficult as it can be for us all) and highly relevant in the distracted world we live in. We're also told in scriptures to "take our thoughts captive", to "renew our minds", and to submit our will to Christ but we're not often taught how to do that. This conversation is intended to give us practical insights of which we can apply today.
In the following conversation, we're also going to discuss God, humanity's brokenness, keys to Christian mindfulness and meditation, the differences and similarities between Christian and other practices, the role of scripture, God constructed "safe places", our connection with God, and available tools that we should use or stay away from.
Discussion TopicsHere is a summary of the topics we cover in this conversation.
- God's presence (contrasted with the state of humanity), the Holy Spirit, the key to Christian meditation/contemplation, and how these relate to prayer and worship.
- The importance of knowing and meditating on Scripture, allowing God to "renew our minds" according to His Word, and the importance of Christ shaping our interpretation of Scripture.
- How God's grace and forgiveness create a "safe space" for us to be ourselves with God, how we're to pray honestly and deeply, being open with Him without fear of condemnation, judgment, or shame, and how God's non-judging and loving presence allows us to bring the uncomfortable or difficult things in our hearts and minds to Him for healing.
- An embodied, incarnational view of mindfulness, living in the present in our physical reality, knowing Christ is present with us, even in every day and the ordinary,
- How do these practices help us stay connected to God, the source of life and goodness? How do they foster God protecting (proactively) and rectifying us (reactively)?
- How we can use tools like CBT and mindfulness to have self-awareness and control over how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other? What about systems and software, like the app/movement 10 percent better or Calm? What about other religious practices?

58: Jesus' High Priestly Prayer — From the Garden to the Cross
Episode Type: Special Edition
Welcome to another special edition of the Share Life podcast. We're in an ongoing podcast series, as part of the discovery process for my next book project, From The Garden to the Cross: How Jesus' Harrowing Mission Shows Us The Way.
In this final From The Garden to the Cross discussion series, we're rewinding and reflecting on Jesus' Prayer at the end of the Farewell Discourse from John chapter 17.
In this conversation series, we've already discussed Jesus' final message to his disciples before the passion began, Jesus' agonizing prayer in the garden, his middle of the night arrest, Judas' betrayal, a night of scheming to kill Jesus, the three denials by Peter, the death of Judas, Pilot asking Jesus about Truth, Herod directing Jesus to entertain him, Pilate washing his hands of responsibility, Simon carrying Jesus' cross, Jesus forgiving his perpetrators, and Jesus' final finishing moments on the cross.
Now, we're rewinding in time once again, to the moments right before we enter the Garden of Gethsemane to see and reflect on Jesus's intercessory prayer before his sacrificial journey begins. His prayer has three sections; one focused on God's glory, another for the disciples before him, and finally for believers across all time.
Fellow Conversation ParticipantsIn this episode, I'm joined by Rachel, Angela, & Todd.
- Rachel Enns is a teacher, wife, mother, dreamer, prayer enthusiast, silviculture nursery owner, lover of science, paper crafter, and rational optimist. Connect with Rachel on Twitter here.

In this conversation series, we've discussed Jesus' agonizing prayer in the garden, his middle of the night arrest, Judas' betrayal, a night of scheming to kill Jesus, the three denials by Peter, the death of Judas, Pilot asking Jesus about Truth, Herod directing Jesus to entertain him, Pilate washing his hands of responsibility, Simon carrying Jesus' cross, Jesus forgiving his perpetrators, and Jesus' final finishing moments on the cross.
Now, we're rewinding in time, to the moments right before we enter the Garden of Gethsemane to see and reflect on what Jesus said before his suffering journey began and his disciples quickly dispersed. Through the Last Supper and the Farewell Discourse, the disciples drank a firehouse of information from Jesus having very little time to process it before all hell broke loose. We read and discuss key passages from each section of the Farewell Discourse (from John 14-16) that encapsulate what's communicated.

49: Unpacking Human Tragedy & The Competing Responses (Christian, Stoic, & Liberal) — With C. Kavin Rowe
Episode Type: Book Discussion (x3)
This description contains links to books on Amazon of which I earn a small commission if you purchase.
In this Book Discussion episode of the Share Life podcast, I’m excited and grateful to be speaking with C. Kavin Rowe, an author, John Templeton Prize winner, Fulbright Scholar, a Lilly Faculty Fellow, Associate Dean of the Faculty, and a George Washington Ivey distinguished professor of New Testament at Duke University Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina.
In February 2020, per the direction of my good friend, I read Meditations by Marcus Aurelius as my first serious dive into stoicism. Wanting a systematic understanding of the stoic tradition, I stumbled across Kavin's book, One True Life: The Stoics and Early Christians as Rival Traditions. It not only gave me what I was looking for but opened up a new world to me. I quickly picked up a copy of your previously published book, World Upside Down: Reading Acts in the Graeco-Roman Age, before finding out you secretly (and surprisingly) published another book at the end of last year called Christianity’s Surprise: A Sure and Certain Hope.
In this discussion, we’ll dive into questions regarding all three works as well as the connections between them.

47: Pilate: "What Is Truth?" — From The Garden to The Cross
Episode Type: Special Edition
Welcome to another special edition of the Share Life podcast. We're in an ongoing series, as part of the discovery process for my next book project, From The Garden to the Cross: How Jesus' Harrowing Mission Shows Us The Way Forward.
In this discussion, we reflect on the moments where Jesus was presented to Pilate by the religious leaders and ending with Pilate asking Jesus, What is Truth? For those just now following along, this event takes place after Jesus' agonizing prayer in the garden, his arrest and betrayal by Judas, a night of scheming to find a way to sentence Jesus to death, the three denials of knowing Jesus by Peter, and the death of Judas. We'll now focus our attention on where Jesus is now presented to Pilate by the religious leaders for execution.
Some topics of the discussion include:
- Pilate's allegiance to the differently motivated people involved.
- The blatant hypocrisy and cowardice of the Sanhedrin.
- The ruthlessness of Pilate and how that differed from his encounter with Jesus.
We'll read and discuss my harmonization of the story from the different accounts of Jesus' life with quotes from the New Living Translation of the Bible. Then, we'll explore the story through the following questions: What we can learn about Jesus, humanity, and ourselves from this monumental moment in time? How does this event apply to our lives today?

46: Judas' Death & His Betrayal Payment — From The Garden To The Cross
Episode Type: Special Edition
Welcome to another special edition of the Share Life podcast. This episode continues my special edition series, as part of the discovery process for my next book project, From The Garden to the Cross: How Jesus' Harrowing Mission Shows Us The Way Forward.
In this discussion episode, part 5, we're reflecting on the death of Judas after he returns the betrayal money. This event follows Peter's Denial of Jesus while Jesus is being interrogated by the religious leaders after Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested, and hours after Jesus' agonizing moment of prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.
In this conversation, we jump into the passage about Judas returning the money to the religious leaders, the ending of his life, and his legacy.
For those just now following along, Judas' death takes place after Judas betrayed Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane with a kiss and after he was paid 30 pieces of silver for his actions.
Some of the highlights from our discussion include:
- How often we use Jesus as a pawn in our pursuit of power and control and the messiness of grace.
- The complexity of Judas and how often we emphasize the simplicity to villainize Judas and separate ourselves from the possibility of relating to or ending up like him.
In this episode, I'm joined by David, Ashley, and Talitha.

In this conversation about the passage describing Peter's denial of Jesus, we'll first read and discuss my harmonization of the story from the different accounts of Jesus' life with quotes from the New Living Translation of the Bible. Then, we'll explore the story through the following questions: What we can learn about Jesus, humanity, and ourselves from this monumental moment in time? How does this event apply to our lives today? This particular moment begins soon after Jesus was betrayed by Judas and arrested in the garden of Gethsemane. 43: Appalachian Trail Hiking Insights — Life Lessons Learned With Don Neder
Episode Type: Listen to Learn
Welcome to another episode of the Share Life Podcast. Today, I'm speaking with Don Neder about the life, work, and societal lessons learned during his first leg of the Appalachian Trail hike.
Don is a long-time entrepreneurial friend who founded FlowGevity where he helps people live the healthiest life (mental and physical) possible by teaching simple techniques (Wim Hof Method and cold therapy to name two) for sustaining wellbeing. In one of the earliest episodes of the podcast, I interviewed Don about his ice baths, the Wim Hof breathing method, and his approach to stewarding our bodies.
In this Listen to Learn episode, we talk about Don's first stint on the Appalachian Trail. He's hiked about 25% of the trail and plans to finish after his temporary pause to be available as his daughter gives birth to a grandchild. During this moment of reflection, I pelt Don with questions about his experience, what he's learned along the way, and how he's changed from the experience so far.

42: The Interrogation of Jesus by Caiaphas & The Religious Leaders — From The Garden To The Cross
Welcome to another special edition of the Share Life podcast. We're in an ongoing series, as part of the discovery process for my next book project, From The Garden to the Cross: How Jesus' Harrowing Mission Shows Us The Way Forward. In this episode discussion, we're reflecting on the interrogation of Jesus by the religious leaders after his arrest in the garden of Gethsemane.
Before we jump into the specific discussion about the particular passage of Jesus being interrogated in the middle of the night, we take a step back and self-reflect on the status of the Christian church in America. We're about to discuss a scene where an innocent man is interrogated, where false witnesses are brought out against him, and where human intentions to convict supersede the truth of the situation. When we look around at believers, we often seem to look more like the deceptive religious leaders than we do Jesus. What's going on?
After we explore that idea, we jump into the passage about Jesus being interrogated. Join us as we explore the story through the following questions: What we can learn about Jesus, humanity, and ourselves from this monumental moment in time? This particular moment begins soon after Jesus was betrayed by Judas and arrested in the garden of Gethsemane.

41: Judas' Betrayal & Jesus' Arrest — From The Garden To The Cross
Episode Type: Special Edition
Welcome to a special edition of the Share Life podcast. In this episode, we're discussing Jesus' betrayal by Judas and arrest in the garden of Gethsemane. This discussion is part 2 of my book project discovery process for From The Garden to the Cross: How Jesus' Harrowing Mission Shows Us The Way Forward. Click here to check out part 1 about Jesus' prayer in the garden.
Before we jump into the specific discussion about the particular passage of Judas' betrayal in the garden of Gethsemane, we first explore how this project intersects with the state of the church today. When we look around at the church as a whole, there's a gap between who we are now and the version of us Jesus desires to transform us into. Daily, we're bombarded with stories of how Jesus' followers are betraying him in how we conduct their lives and interact with others. Why are we often elevating power about service? Why isn't the transformative power of Jesus changing us for the better? What false teachings have we wrongly bought into? What's going on?
From there, we jump into some context building towards the moment of betrayal in the garden and before reading my harmonization of the story from the different biographical accounts of Jesus' life (using quotes from the New Living Translation of the Bible). After the reading, we explore what this story has to teach us about Jesus, humanity, and ourselves.
This particular moment of betrayal begins right after Jesus' agonizing prayer.

40: Jesus' Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane — From The Garden To The Cross
Episode Type: Special Edition
Welcome to a special edition of the Share Life podcast. In this episode, we partake in an interactive discussion about Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, when darkness enveloped him, and he prayed that God would provide another way forward.
This discussion is part of my next book project discovery process, From The Garden to the Cross: Powerful Lessons from Jesus' Harrowing Journey. In this episode, we first discuss the following origin of this project. What I found looking across Christianity in the cultural landscape was a deep disconnect between what western Christians embody and what Christ embodied. Not only did I witness this dynamic, but I also saw a lack of interest and willingness to even move towards the suffering of the cross (to die to self and pick up our cross and follow Jesus), as if we Americans have embraced a form of prosperous Christianity that is more secular than Christ-like.
"The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable." — Brennan Manning (Quote mentioned by Jim Karwisch in the subsequent discussion)This discussion, and the book to eventually follow, is my exploration of this disconnect, and perhaps a guide for us to move back towards the source of life and transformation.
From there, I then read my harmonization of the story sequence (you can read along in the write-up below) from the different biographical accounts of Jesus' life (Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John) with quotes from the New Living Translation of the Bible. From there, we explore what we can learn about God, humanity, and ourselves from this monumental moment in time. This story of Jesus's journey to the cross starts in the garden of Gethsemane, three years after Jesus began his ministry and recruited the disciples to follow him.
