Shaykh Fadhlalla Haeri

Those who are on a path of rising intelligence and consciousness, and who want to minimize conflict and suffering, are advised to take refuge and not enter the distractions of more power, and wealth etc.

Human consciousness is one of many multiverses of which we have no knowledge. Dabbling in unseen powers is extremely dangerous and will cause one destruction. We are advised to stay within very narrow boundaries and not seek any powers, no matter how 'well intended' those powers may be, especially those of the Djinn. This surah enjoins us not to enter any zone that gives us power beyond reason, to keep our gaze down/lowered and to keep ourselves honest with a willingness to confess who our Lord is, at all times.

1. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn,
2. From the evil of what He has created,
3. And from the evil of the utterly dark night when it comes,
4. And from the evil of those who blow on knots,
5. And from the evil of the envious when he envies

If we are to have a wholesome life, with appropriate conduct and presence, then we need to constantly steer ourselves away from distractions and distracting elements, including all mental whisperings, temptations and those suggestions from confused people. We have to remain centered and composed, otherwise we may lose our calibration with the higher Light within us (the soul). This can be complex given both the seen and unseen entities that surround us, and requires us to have very clear definitions of boundaries. This will facilitate the rise in our spiritual intelligence.

1. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of men,

2. The King of men,

3. The god of men,

4. From the evil of the whisperings of the slinking (Shaitan),

5. Who whispers into the hearts of men,

6. From among the jinn and the men.

A powerful short surah, where the Prophet Muhammed was shown his boundless grace and goodness, i.e. full exposure to the light transmitted from his own ruh (soul). This came about through trust, abandonment of concern. The surah urges us to express goodness, be generous and make sacrifices through the generosity of spirit. And to those who are cut off from the light, they are the ones who truly have no continuity (and not those without progeny).

1. Surely We have given you Kauthar,

2. Therefore pray to your Lord and make a sacrifice.

3. Surely your enemy is the one who shall be without posterity,

The concept of God or the Divine Light, was part of the arab culture where the Muhammadi revelations occurred. The surah urges us to confess that God is One and know that it is beyond on mental comprehension. The mysterious One is self nourishing, self maintaining and perpetual forever, not subject to space or time.

Humans aspire to these qualities as we too love to be independent. However, unlike us, nothing returns from God, except grace. There is nothing that can resemble God. Ikhlaas means sincerity and consequently, the surah only incorporates God, the ultimate sincerity. Everything has emerged from this beautiful cosmic energy. We need to realise, through the darkness of our lower self, the truth (haq) and light of our souls.

1. Say: He, Allah, is One.

2. Allah is He on Whom all depend.

3. He begets not, nor is He begotten.

4. And none is like Him.

The most oft repeated Surah of the Qur'an focuses on the path.

The way to live our lives with least sorrow, emotional upheaval etc. It starts by reminding us of the fabric of existence, held by both the visible and invisible fabric of praise of our what we attract and wish for. Human consciousness is balanced between light and dark, attraction and repulsion. We straddle between these numerous vibrations of opposites, the most prominent force of which is Life itself.

Everything we praise emanates from the mysterious Divine Source, which governs the known and unknown universe. The primary dualities in our praise is between Rahman and Raheem, Mercy for all and Mercy for the individual. We invoke the essence of The Governor and Controller (Malik) of Time and who will cause spacetime to end.

The shadow aspects of these great attributes are also still under the governance and control of the One Source.

Our worship and adoration of God is by the grace of the soul (ruh) which we invoke when seek to be on the straight path of presence, grace and dependance on the One, who encompasses everything known and unknown.

1. In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
2. Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds;
3. Most Gracious, Most Merciful;
4. Master of the Day of Judgment.
5. Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek.
6. Show us the straight way,
7. The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath, and who go not astray.

We are reminded of the sacred oath that humans have taken, by housing the Divine Light within our bodies. The combination of both in one, is insan, who struggle to reconcile these two realities. The only way to reconcile this turmoil, is to dissolve oneself and transcend to the Ultimate Light.

The nature of the mind is to blame and claim innocence. Its shadowy nature will always try to justify its existence. Once embedded with emotions- there is havoc. Restrict its work to outer world tasks, rather than the ego's desires for fame, glory and validation, amongst other expectations.

The way to resolve the conundrum is to release yourself, your neck from the suffocation of your illusions and to give nourishment to those who are destitute, in whatever way is appropriate.

Each one of us are orphans (yateem) and destitutes (fakir) asking for compassion, and the Qur'an has many examples referring to mankind as such.

Since we are in the zone of duality, one aspect of us tries to reach for Divine Attributes like Generosity, Kindness, Clemency, rendering our body, our balad (city), as healthy as possible, if not, we will find ourselves filled with anger and suspicion, and other poisons-causing all sorts of depressions.

The key to our contentment is that our loyalty should always be to the One and only boundless and Eternal One along with the practice of all blessings being attributed to the One who has provided them, failing which, we will reach a disastrous end.

1. I do call to witness this City;-
2. And thou art a freeman of this City;-
3. And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-
4. Verily We have created man into toil and struggle.
5. Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?
6. He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!
7. Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
8. Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?-
9. And a tongue, and a pair of lips?-
10. And shown him the two highways?
11. But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.
12. And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?-
13. (It is:) freeing the bondman;
14. Or the giving of food in a day of privation
15. To the orphan with claims of relationship,
16. Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.
17. Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.
18. Such are the Companions of the Right Hand.
19. But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.
20. On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round).

Life on earth is within space and time and receiving messages from the Unseen enables us to cross the conditionality of human consciousness to that of the soul (ruh). The disclosure of the Quran connects physical activities, people, groups, historical rises and falls of mankind with the heavenly abode of lights and delights. Like previous sacred books, the Quran reinforces their messages, and brought the message 'up to date' so to speak, i.e to enable human beings not to suffer and to be at one with Life itself through various practices like fasting etc. This message of the Quran emerged from timelessness into time, during the month of Ramadan to the Nabi (saw), and the search for this special night of Qadr (Night of Power) during the holy month of fasting in Ramadan continues to this day. We should express humility and utter gratitude for the light of the truth of the sacred message revealed, and practice presence in order to feel the ever-residing Grace of the Divine.

1. We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power:
2. And what will explain to thee what the night of power is?
3. The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.
4. Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah's permission, on every errand:
5. Peace!...This until the rise of morn!

At all times, the nature of the human, is to be at a loss, a statement of Higher Truth which will be realised when one transcends dualities and enters Oneness. We are at a loss and experience difficulties because of the evolving tendencies, biographies and values that we attribute to ourselves within time, within duality. The only way to resolve this, is by dissolving it, by faith and trust, that there is a process within spacetime, that we are not separate from, but which we are not entirely, which we realise when we step aside from ourselves to realise our true nature, the soul. When we remind one another, in an ambiance, of the Ever Present Truth of Divinity and our real abode in timelessness, through patience.

Translation of the Surah by Shakir:

1. I swear by the time,
2. Most surely man is in loss,
3. Except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience.

Surah Al A'la commentary by Shaykh Fadhlalla Haeri focuses on humanity's responsibility towards nature and its delicate balance as well as our inner intricate balance. The worst affliction one can experience is not being connected with the Source of Life in the moment, the nature of the soul or the ruh is eternal. Associating with one's body, which is not eternal, and its emotions, which are subject to changes in emotions and values, is what causes much anxiety, depression, fears and worries. Clearing one's heart, one's mind and one's body is a good practice to leave the conditioned state of consciousness in preparation for the next stage. It is only a few thousand years that the message of scriptures have been shared, compared to billions of years of evolution, so we need to put our impact on nature and things into perspective, after the balance has been set. We need to be in more wonderment and awe of our natural surroundings, of the breath in our bodies and its flow in and out, instead of our gross obsession with wealth and acquiring more and more.

The most helpful thing to do for our future, is to be present in the now, the moment.

1. Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,
2. Who creates, then makes complete,
3. And Who makes (things) according to a measure, then guides (them to their goal),
4. And Who brings forth herbage,
5. Then makes it dried up, dust-colored.
6. We will make you recite so you shall not forget,
7. Except what Allah pleases, surely He knows the manifest, and what is hidden.
8. And We will make your way smooth to a state of ease.
9. Therefore do remind, surely reminding does profit.
10. He who fears will mind,
11. And the most unfortunate one will avoid it,
12. Who shall enter the great fire;
13. Then therein he shall neither live nor die.
14. He indeed shall be successful who purifies himself,
15. And magnifies the name of his Lord and prays.
16. Nay! you prefer the life of this world,
17. While the hereafter is better and more lasting.
18. Most surely this is in the earlier scriptures,
19. The scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa.

A 2023 series of Qur'an talks with Shaykh Fadhlalla Haeri, starting with Surah Inshirah focuses on the purpose of human life, the challenges of feeling trapped, the relief that soon inevitably comes afterwards. Human beings are continuously evolving- a work in progress- n duality, irrespective of how many times one touches the Divine Light within oneself. With every difficulty, the seed of ease is within it, with every ease, the seed of difficulty is within it, unless one continuously refers to the Divine Light. We have to celebrate the duality that we are in, that has emerged from the One, and is leading us back to the One. Empty out of anything other than the Divine Light within your heart, and seek to be at one with your Lordship- then one is truly loyal to Life, which is eternal.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. May peace and prayers be showered upon the Master of the Messengers and his household and guided companions. Allah, the Sublime says: “Indeed through the remembrance of Allah the hearts become tranquil.” (13:28.) I ask Allah that you be of those whose hearts are tranquil and of those who have arrived and attained the knowledge of Allah and connected themselves to His mercy which is without end.  

Allah has bestowed His generosity and munificence upon us by granting us access to enlightenment through the teachings and guidance of the Seal of the Prophets and his vicegerent !Ali ibn Abi talib and those who followed him in righteousness especially our Shadhili Shaykhs. I specifically mention Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-H.abib, may the mercy of Allah be upon him; they are the forerunners and we are their followers.

I present this Wird to whomsoever desires access to the treasures of the Hereafter. There is no power and no strength except through Allah, the Magnificent. There is no victor except Him. There is no presence except His. There is nothing and none sought after besides Him. There is no beloved except Him.

This Discourse recollects the life of the great patriarch of middle eastern spirituality: The Prophet Abraham. Shaykh Fadhlalla presents the historical narrative and arc of the defining moments that marked the life Abraham ‘Ebrahim’ in Arabic,  in tandem with overviewing there meanings and value to seekers today. The historical – cultural dynamics of the period he lived in, the way of life and behaviours of the peoples and the interplay of classical language descriptions are thoroughly explored in presenting his path, discovery and immersion into the primordial way of being, culminating in his maturation and complete orientation towards Universal Oneness. This talk explores the essential sameness of the Abrahamic message, in all the prophetic teachings emphasizing the key features of the prophetic profile and the meaning of perfecting the purpose of human life. The evolution of the path as per the Abrahamic lineage and the other Prophetic figures of the ancient near and middle east is briefly shared. There are several essential themes reflecting universal spiritual dynamics born from the Abrahamic inheritance and message that are fundamental and refined in the Muhammadi teachings. These are: Hijrah- Turning away from the darkness of ignorance; Islam, Iman and Ihsan - Submission to the Truth at all its different levels and yielding to the transformative resonance of higher inspiration and revealed knowledge;  Fitna and Bala - Trials and suffering as the agents of purification towards alignment and dependence on The Reality; Ubudiiyah – perfection of worship and the meaning of servanthood. With reference to a multitude of Qur’anic verses, this presentation is a rich resource celebrating the unveilings of divine perfection, mercy and the keys to arrival as per the essential way of the revealed prophetic paths.

In this session, Shaykh Fadhlalla reviews the key landmarks of the series, beginning with the essential questions that have informed the reflection and study throughout: What is the position of human being in existence; why can’t we maintain constancy and happiness; what is this entity called you; how to save myself from myself?. Adam was designed in theGarden to experience duality in order to realize the light of lights. This talk focuses on the evolution of the self in its movement through time and space, andthe key processes in grooming and refinement. The interplay between self-soul and how to access the inner heart is a central theme. We are programmed for perfection, designed seeking the original state. The constant challenge of balance and the role of knowledge and action is an additional key topic. Ultimately,true knowledge lies in yielding to the divine orchestration. Moving along the patterns of life leads to developing a higher level of awareness and conduct. Ultimately,a good attitude, courtesy and inner abandonment coupled with good expectations are the necessary pre-conditions for following the essential passion - this existence is based on love. The concluding segment of this session, and the series, is a telegraphic review of the remaining key classical Arabic and Qur’anic terms which serve as keys for deepening insight into the study of the multi-level nature of the Qur’anic message and the prophetic teachings.

In the fourth session,Shaykh Fadhlalla continues developing the theme of Purification of the Heart and Human Cosmology. The Qur’an repeatedly calls human beings to greater awareness of the complex and incredible mechanism of human life - all of us seek truth beyond change. In this session, Shaykh Fadhlalla discusses the links between knowledge and action via the Qur’anic descriptions of Iman, Islam, Ih’san- the method and modes in which one reads and acts in accordance with the patterns of life to ultimately grow and develop. This section of the series focuses on the call to living higher life, the journey of the soul and the path of goodness, wholesomeness and refinement. Through service and universal generosity  humanity can be liberated from the confines of the lower self by the lights of divine life and the virtues of the soul. Developing the right attitudes and navigational keys enables the living heart to constantly witness perfections and follow the arc of life on its sacred journey. This is the exemplar of all the great prophets and masters.

Additional important themes which follow the Qur’anic focus of the series include: Akhira ‘next life’, Ji’had ‘Struggle’, Hij’ra‘migration’. In turning away from errors and difficulties one moves towards the precinct of the soul – “Everything can be changed if the heart has moved in the right direction.” Shaykh Fadhlalla comments on and discusses various traditions in combination with the Qur’anic selections that contour our rich heritage and exemplify human knowledge and excellence whenliving in accord with the divine potential that resides in every heart.

The third session in the UK Qur’an series. Utilizing several key questions in exploring further the central themes of human nature and existence: Why do seek the best outcomes? why do we want act in a way that is considered to be good in any given situation? what is this complex self that contains the entire spectrum of the highest and lowest? The first key topic is knowledge and the path that leads towards appropriate knowledge which are the preliminary conditions for joy and how this relates to the Din or path. Reiterated in this talk are the essential duties of the diligent traveler: in discovering and perfecting the modes of skillfully dealing with the lower self - the boundless light of the cosmic soul is already available. Familiarizing oneself with the changing nature of the self is a dynamic process in which the awakened heart reads and responds by the light of the soul. The second key topic of this discourse is the heart Qalb, Soul Ruh the dynamism between self and soul and the multiple meanings in which the Qur’an relays as per this complex human entity functions.

When the heart is purified, it reflects appropriately upon the world and discerns it as it is, when it is turned upward it reflects the unseen cosmic lights of the soul. Harmonious and dynamic interchange of intelligences between heart, mind and soul resonate to enable appropriate discrimination between dualities whilst constantly perceiving essential Unity - this is a key topic in this discourse and is approached through multiple angles. Various prophetic traditions and an extensive range of Qur’an verses are used to delineate the challenges, steps and processes towards the awakened state emphasizing the place of faith and steadfastness and the essence of Dhikr,Remembrance that ennobles the human being in reaching its full potential.

The second discourse from the UK Qur’an series. These discourses construct a multi - dimensional map and cosmology that both indicates the designs of life and provide keys in which one is able move along its pathways. Human beings are repeatedly challenged to review and adjust, as part of the mysterious movement of life. This talk considers several key topics - The first is the self and the Quranic descriptions of its nature, development and cosmology. The emphasis topic is intellect, rationality and intelligence - as human beings grow and develop in consciousness, the capacity for reasoning and discrimination of dualities is a necessary step in the development of a wholesome heart. Greater awareness and intelligence allies with knowledge, action and the best possible conduct. Shaykh Fadhlalla discusses these issues and their relevance to the good life, the drive towards excellence and living in accord with divine mercy. “The closer you are to your last breath - the closer you are to the breathless vista of no beginning and no end.” Yet balance, constancy and a living heart are desirable for all human beings.

Shaykh Fadhlalla introduces a key theme that is developed and repeated throughout the series: The method or path is to care for the lower half and recognize and resonate with the higher side which is always fully functional. The committed traveler will take every difficulty as an opportunity for re-alignment, difficulties and challenges are indicators pointing to the soul’s constancy and light. All of nature’s programs, patterns and transmissions in following the appropriate course lead to human beings reaching the purity of the heart and timeless knowledge. The middle path is an oscillation between the boundless and the bounded and limited. This is a detailed presentation examining these key topics with depth and delineation of key issues in dynamics of transformation and refinement by the Qur’an and the Prophetic path

This is the first in a series of several sessions hosted in the England. Whereby Shaykh Fadhlalla discusses select fundamental themes from the Academy of Self Knowledge teachings and cosmology with special emphasis on its Qur’an essence. One of the purposes of the ASK teachings is to present the Universality of The Qur’anic teachings and openings in manner that is accessible beyond language and culture. These discourse’s straddle both the particular and the universal covering a compendium of key topics from the Qur’an. The emphasis throughout is transformative knowledge and appropriate means in deriving that knowledge towards living a wholesome life.

The focal point in the first discourse is the Adamic metaphor from which various essential questions are addressed.  Adam didn’t know what eternity was. The metaphoric descent from the Gardenic state into the world of dualities and thus the rise of consciousness, sentiency and movement of life on its journey back to origin. With reference to key Qur’anic verses Shaykh Fadhlalla explores the themes that are central to human cosmology and existence: self-awareness, reflectiveness, Unity and the unified self, the quest for reality and the road maps and that delineate the clear path of navigation. Human challenges all form part of the composition and dynamics of life on its journey back to its cosmic essence. Additional Key topics include: Guidance, striving, freedom and determinism, action and the purpose of service in human development and the prophetic and Qur’anic method in addressing the diverse life forces which drive and affect human life.

A continuation of the fourth session in the retreat series this talk is composed of aphorisms read by different participants. Shaykh Fadhlalla continues his commentary using links and bridge in the aphorisms material to pointers and indications, relate to different dynamics in consciousness, contextualizing them both in terms of modern life, as well as prophetic teachings, conduct, and the Qur’an. This is a Rich offering bringing the retreat to its culmination drawing out insights that relate natural human experiences, everyday life as it perfectly located in the frames of cosmic reality. The focus on the phase of completion is given pivotal attention in this talk, Shyakh Fadhlalla shares intimately the various dynamics and dimensions of travel that are not so easily delineated – rather these are maps that exist in the heart. The need for companionship and evolved references is emphasized. This is the essential concluding piece to the manuscript of this retreat series. Shaykh Fadhlalla ends this talk with select poetry further illustrating and bringing attention to the unified constant beneath all changing dualities with clarity and insight. It is an Ode to the Eternal Presence – Allah.

In the fourth talk of the series, Shaykh Fadhlalla reminds the audience of the three main issues he outlined previously and how each relates to the five-journey model. Continued disclosures on patterns and design of nature, and the arrow of time using metaphors and examples in human life to further relay how the compendium levels of existence and reality are connected and encapsulated in Unity, connecting appropriately with the different stages of the evolutionary arc in consciousness and the state of continuation after awakening: living with intimate awareness of apparent dualities, yet in dynamic awareness and perception of cosmic reality. An anthology of aphorisms from a selection put together by all the participants are read and discussed relevant to the Journey’s, which Shaykh Fadhlalla comments on and expands. These indications are only to help us see, through apparent otherness and the illusion of independence, perpetual unity.

The next chapter in the Jewels series, Shaykh Fadhlalla discusses another of the short meccan Surah’s at – Tin ‘The Fig’. The early short meccan surah’s are condensed snap shots of the multi layers of reality. This Surah places focus on natural patterns and rhythums. Using the metaphor and symbol of the ancient fruits: the fig and the olive that were staple part of the diet of people of the ancient near east. The metaphor of the ancient trees and our connection with them utilizes an accessible example of the human condition in this temporary zone. Life is a nursery in which in which we improve on things in order to practice returning to the garden. Part of the earthly program human beings are able to add a bit more to nature, as we derive sustenance. Shaykh Fadhllala indicates how this surah highlights key aspects of the map of life. Human beings have been created with the best of potential, in this transitory stage experience is subject to duality. We all seek resolution regarding trials, change and what is the meaning behind it and the way to sustainable joy – all human beings desire joy and lasting goodness. The key theme in this surah is continuity – the cyclical propagation and provision brought to human beings in the prophetic beings and development of the evolution of the essential message and way of life – we are here as a preliminary step in order to perfect adoration and worship of the source of life. That mysterious essence permeates all known and unknown realities and dwells within the heart of man.

The third disclosure in the retreat is about the meaning singularity, and the eternal moment; the singular light in our heart, which is inseparable from its multiple effects in the world of our experience. Shaykh Fadhlalla explains why we experience both confusion and hope, and then reviews his five-journey model previously outlined within the wider framework of the phases conclusion and completion. All the patterns, designs and cycles we experience emanate from eternal unity. As is a theme throughout the series there is a focus on the Phase of Ongoignness or continuation in consciousness. After the natural conclusion of Awakening comes completion, which is to be here, but not of here. To be in this world without denying any aspect of it, but not of this world. Your heart belongs to a zone that is indescribable, which you have access to when you disappear into your nothingness. You have mapped out and journeyed through the changing multiplicities by losing your belongings; now you must arrive at eternal, timeless being. This is a further compelling discussion on what is the most subtle and unique period on the Spiritual Odyssey. Shyakh Fadhalla share key’s insights into navigating this final phase successfully and what the critical issues are through this passage.

Beginning with the last of the three topics: All experience is encapsulated in Absolute Oneness - Shaykh Fadhlalla explains how this is realized naturally through the journey of life. Five broad levels are delineated in this talk as key reference on the map of the human journey, these are: early on; later, wisdom and insight; awakening, and ongoingness. This model is compared and related to Mulla Sadra’s model of ‘the Four Journeys’, which influence and relate to the key the maps presented yet must be distinguished. Each Journey, each phase occurs in its appropriate time and in its own perfect way. As is a key theme throughout this series, the phase of Ongoingnes. Spiritual awakening is the beginning of another phase. After the conclusion and recognition of unity comes the means and pathways of living and basking in eternal fusion. To be amongst the creation, basking in the Presence of the Creator. Shaykh Fadhlalla presents essential pointers and navigations that encompass each journey on the spectrum, indicating how they interweave connect to be fully human by living in divinity. You have one heart, one head, one being, which emanates from Original Being only to reflect Truth always, in all circumstances. Self-realization is nothing other than this, truth is realized by yourself, from yourself, unto yourself, because of your soul.

This is the first of a series of talks given during a retreat in the UK in 2011titled Journey’s in Consciousness. In the opening discussion, Shaykh Fadhlalla outlines the three main issues to which the retreat itself is based on there are patterns, designs, and ways which are natural; there is a direction in life - or arrow of time - which implies a relentless drive towards higher consciousness; and all the diverse aspects of nature – which includes consciousness - are encapsulated in Absolute Oneness. In a compelling Discourse Shaykh Fadhlalla expounds upon the three essential pathways through life and indicates the how we traverse across these channels along a journey through multiple levels of consciousness, this is an essential discourse in outlining the journey of life, existence and a detailed map in contemporary language In which the diligent traveler progresses towards completion. “This Oneness is the purpose of you and I being here today, tomorrow, forever”.

The focus is Surah as Shams ‘Sun’ It covers a wide range of human and worldly activities and is one of the earliest revelations. It therefore contains the essentials as to the unity between heavens and earth, building blocks of life; human nature and our role and purpose in the cosmic unfolding. The Stars, galaxies and celestial bodies were gathered in the Universal melting pot of the nascent universe and begun to drift and separate. The echo of this primal pattern is mirrored in the human heart. Shaykh Fadhlalla presents how this surah takes us out of the cocoon of the conditioned mind into the vast vistas of cosmic interconnectedness. Life on earth derives its energy from the sun, everything pulsates and gyrates in its resonance and rhythm, this is reflected in the human self -  ever unstable and uncertain. Shaykh Fadhlalla shows us how this surah indicates the delicate connectedness between the universal realties and earthly micro. All part of the immense web of oneness. The Qur’anic metaphors and teaching present the maps and pathways that reflect the relentless drive towards expansion of consciousness. The fruition of the human Journey.

In this Discourse Shaykh Fadhlalla uses key verses from Surah Al Fatir ‘the crack’ in discussing Flexibility, rigidity, diversity in Islam. Some of the important Questions contouring this discourse include: what is the relationship between culture and, habit; traditions and spiritual essence. What is the meaning of diversities relevant to the all-encompassing Unified field. The foundation of the Din is that all human beings are seeking struggling, striving to discover live by that truth. We are here as stewards practicing and perfecting our resonance with that reality as part of the evolutionary rise back to that state after death. We all seek that total knowledge that all of it is from the one by the one, the outer incrustation otherness, dualities and pluralities are layers of encrustation upon that light. Shaykh Fadhlalla further elaborates on the historical period in which the Muhammadi message occurs and the relevance of a renewal of the message of Unity in a period that was ready for a fruition in spiritual growth. Many of the inheritors of the Abrahamic message had bifurcated into diverse currents. The essential Islamic message and was a clarification and culmination of all that came before. All human beings carry the Adamic blueprint – all human beings have been imprinted by the eternal presence. We are driven towards the best in comfort, ease relationships harmony and smooth passage in life. This talk emphasizes the need and role of boundaries in spiritual maturation and living a fulfilled life.

Continuing the series of key Qur’anic disclosures Shaykh Fadhlalla presents this short discourse on one of the Early Meccan Surah’s - Surah Al A’la ‘The Most High’. This Surah is the eighth surah revealed chronologically and therefore is immensely rich in that it presents the map of existence and the purpose of human life. In the usual approach to these Qur’anic discourses Shaykh Fadhlalla emphasizes Classical Arabic key words as windows into the meanings of the chapter. This is an immensely important surah, like most of the early unveilings It emphasizes the power and Immensity of the Cosmic Reality and the essential purpose and duty in human life. This surah begins by emphasizing the expansive nature of glorification, and then presents various samples and reflections as to what that is. Everything in existence has its pattern and the measures and controls that bring it to its fruition. Al A’la indicates a map presenting the explosive multiplicity of existence, as a mirror of the divine names and meanings – held in the arc of emanation and return. The patterns are set and apply at numerous levels – from the macro to micro, in his Discourse Shaykh Fadhlalla highlight key aspects of the direction of life and the orientation human beings need to refer. There is a way to conduct ourselves at numerous levels of activity we are here’s part of our upbringing as preparation for return to the zone of permanency. Like all the early Meccan revelations the focus is on truth and its nature with special emphasis on the immensity, power and control of that Mysterious Reality in every aspect of existence. Important are the fundamental maps for transformation built into this rich disclosure - every heart has the imprint of the divine presence in it. Human purpose, our practice is to by will enter that zone permanent joy – ‘sa’adul abadiyyah’.

In this two part Discourse Shaykh Fadhlalla presents the key topics and themes of Surah Ya’sin. Known as the heart of the Qur’an, the implication is that it contains the entirety. It is the center. It represents the essence of the Qur’anic message representing a distillation of thousands of years of maps and indications as to the human being and the direction of life. Classically it is divided into five sections. In this talk, Shaykh Fadhlalla unpacks the first two sections. The Adamic metaphor is of a descent from the eternal state into this zone of terrestrial dualities in order to ascend back. The first section is about warning, a message and news to people who have not heard it before. Information is the precursor to transformation which culminates is the purified heart that guides and leads. Surah Ya’sin provides numerous descriptions of the opposite to the optimum state and the warnings that pertain to those who are able to heed the message. Shyakh Fadhlalla indicates the pre-conditions for those who want to imbibe the message of unity, who trust in the unseen and who struggle against the lower self and are willing to be accountable. The second section is a historical narrative, specifically relevant to an episode with some of the followers of Isa and the city of Antioch. All people, societies and groups have been sent with warner’s giving people the news of truth and light and the direction of life. The key note in the first two sections is of accountability and destiny, the shuddering message that we are all responsible for our thoughts, actions and intentions and the overall state here and now. We are all challenged to fulfill the purpose of human life –that is awakening and adoration of the source of oneness – ever present.

Part two of the Suarah Ya’sin Discourse – Shaykh Fadhalla presents how this surah presents the complete picture of the outer, the inner, the higher the lower and everything in between. The final segment of this surah is covered in the concluding three sections. The historical narrative of Isa’s Disciples, Antioch and the old man moves into a section of similitudes and symbols, patterns in nature and the celestial bodies, Shaykh Fadhlalla indicates how the universal and natural patterns and existences provide subtle hints and allusions to the way of Reality, providing answers to questions such as predestination and free will, deepening awareness of the profound integration and connectedness of all systems the macro links to the micro Everything follows it’s program human beings are in the melting pot of existence being groomed towards deeper awareness of the cosmic totally and what is the role and Duty of man. The next section describes the condition of the transformed being those who lived in awareness constantly correcting, attitude and intention. Those who have begun to experience the Garden as a contrast to those who have not fulfilled the primary duty in this life. Emphasizing the condition of people in the next life. In the final section Shyakh Fadhlalla summarizes Surah Yas’in but also the human story, existence as whole. The central themes are: The cyclical nature of life and dualities, the appropriate courtesy to life and the essential nature of the self. The purpose of the Journey is to yield to the soul, true awakening is a dynamic process of which we have a role to play but its fruition is a part of life unfolding arc. The Earth is the kindergarten of the Cosmic Author whose light engulfs ad energizes all known and unknown possibilities.

The next Surah in the Jewels series is an Naba ‘The News’ part of the selection of Meccan surah’s covered in this series. The emphasis of this surah is Finality, in the tenor of all the key meccan surah’s, Shaykh Fadhlala draws attention to essential questions and issues: The meaning of life, the end and the beginning, the way human beings are to conduct themselves in this life and the essential purpose of the human being.

We all seek comfort and contentment at heart, well beingness yet no state is durable. The human being encompasses a wide spectrum of consciousness. We are here to practice Neutralizing the Profile in order so that we touch the zone of well beingness in us. We are here to practice living - through interaction, experiencing the opposites, the constant pursuit for compatibility and companionship is part of the training ground in which we embody the divine attributes and qualities while in constant awareness and resonance with eternal life. Shaykh Fadhlalla verse by verse elucidates the key dimensions of this surah as it as it pertains to the original message and way of Unity. Expounding various cultural concepts that have a great bearing on grasping the full architecture of the map. The meaning of Reckoning, Accountability, Death, Purification and the transition through different stages of life. We are here practicing that which will come later – that is calibration with the perfect zone of the eternal soul.

In the Series of Key Qur’an talks the focus of this discourse is Surah Al Balad – ‘The City’. In Arabic the word for city, connotes town or country – every human is a city, containing multitudes of interactions and connections at numerous levels. Shaykh Fadhlalla highlights how Qur’anic interpretation is classically divided into four categories. In order to be appropriately nourished, the full package of the path needs to put together, prepared and imbibed. We are inheritors of the gifts of prophetic light and manner of conduct as to how to be more in tune with the cosmic light. The Qur’an is a multi - layered manual and needs to be approached appropriately. Al Balad provides a map of human cosmology. Important topics include: Human weakness, frailty and transformation, awakening to perpetual presence, the constant interplay between self and soul. We are all challenged as to how to rise above our enslavement to attachments, desires and illusions. The key message of this discourse is the unfolding of knowledge and wisdom that connects heavens and earth.

 This talk is a condensed presentation of key surah’s in the Qur’an. The Prophetic message of Unity is part of an evolution in life and consciousness culminating in the Adamic being that has the potential to encompass a spectrum of intelligence and awareness. This talk focuses on the heart as the spiritual organ or centre of the human being – the human heart that is the link between the cosmic spirit and the terrestrial world. Shaykh Fadhlalla presents key indications relevant to human composition, and the diverse states and conditions of the heart as human beings move along the path of growth, evolvement and purification. The key to wholeness, fulfillment is a heart firmly connected to its spiritual essence. The four major states of the heart and the primary sickness and confusions that afflict human beings are delineated. In the legacy of all the prophetic beings, the path of grooming and awakening is the purification of the heart which culminates in the ‘Qalban Salim’ fulfilled, tranquil heart. Shaykh Fadhlalla delineates the qur’anic road map towards inner contentment and fulfillment highlighting the pitfalls and challenges relevant to human vices, distractions, hypocrisy and the restless nature of the ego self.

In Part two of the commentary on Surah al Mulk Shyakh Fadhlalla indicates the key messages this short Surah presents. Human life rest on constant uncertainty and insecurity these verses bring this theme into focus to engender a heightened sense of awareness and caution – indicating the immensity of the Universal effulgence. These declarations take the mind to edge of the ineffable. Putting into context the insignificance of our limited human situation. Shaykh Fadhlalla discloses how this surah combines the earthly and heavenly aspects of life providing the sketches relevant to human nature, the self and how to navigate successfully in this life. The purpose of the Muhammadi message and way is to witness things as they are, to live by the perfection of the light of the One. Using additional Qur’anic verses and various historical references Shaykh Fadhlalla shows us some of the key patterns of the self, contrasting the lower and higher nature of man. In dwelling upon the similitudes presented in this surah we are given sketches of the total nature of Divine mercy as it encompasses all process and patterns in this life. Additional important themes include: the nature of guidance, awakening - Shaykh Fadhlalla concludes by sharing some descriptions of the diverse conditions of the heart and the means in which to begin to orientate it towards its fruition. The emphatic theme of this Surah is constant awareness of sacred presence.

Surah al Mulk is a late Meccan surah. Dealing with key issues related to heavens and earth, life after death and key aspects of our interaction with this life. Death Precedes Life - the earth was barren for billions of years before cosmic rains brought life and existence. In this discourse Shaykh Fadhlalla engages various key themes encompassed in the first fifteen verses of this Surah. This Surah connects with various others emphasizing Eternal Life and the Unified totality. This short surah is vast in that it sheds light of several key topics. These include: The process and cycles of life; cosmology of existence; The dual composition and the ever-secure higher self and the ever uncertain, changing lower self the purpose and relevance of Boundaries as it connects to our inner reality;. The key theme in this surah is ongoing life, the development of perspective and insight regarding events and instances throughout our earthly journey. Shaykh Fadhlalla delineates how the nature of desires and drives emergent in the self are reflections leading back to the sacred light of the soul. This Surah emphasizes the total nature of Reality – perfections occur and exist at every level of life. In pursuing the right path and witnessing the ways and reflections of the moment the human being can fulfill his or her duty in this transitory stage, at all times aware of Sacred Presence.

This short and rich discourse draws focus to the five verses from surah Al Baqara. ‘The Cow’. Shaykh Fadhlalla uses these vast and powerful verses to illucidate on key themes and questions in human life: What is the path to sustainable durable happiness and wellbeingness? Why do human beings suffer?

Every living entity is constantly challenged by dualities, restrictions built into the patterns of life. We are challenged to constantly be modest, courageous, vigilant in our pursuit of wisdom and justice. A central theme of this discourse is the meaning of ‘Sabr’ patience in growth evolvement and the good life. As Sabur is one of the divine names – In developing the capacity to stop desires, to stop time is to connect with this state. Shaykh Fadhlalla elucidates on four categories of patience, encompassing a range of states and ails and the appropriate attitudes and circumstances in which they’re applicable; how to live well with constant reference to light is a major theme in this discourse paralleled with various definitions regarding the path of salvation and the tricks of the lower self. All human beings are the same thus through grooming, service, sharing we have the opportunity to grow towards deeper perception of Unity. The second major theme is restrictions and suffering as as the door to the eternal presence. Shaykh Fadhalla shares various descriptions of the path of evolvement and awakening the crucible of life dualities - for the traveler on the path, the ultimate condition is recognizing divine mercy in every state and circumstance. Shaykh Fadhlalla concludes this discourse with various descriptions of the meaning of Awakened life by the Qur’an. To redeem oneself from oneself by oneself and divine mercy.

The focus of this talk is the Verse of Light. These few short verses indicate the totality of the eternal author. In this short, distilled discourse Shaykh Fadhlalla discloses various insights and sketches representing levels of connectedness between the seen and the unseen. He does so against a backdrop of the type of disclosures that occur in Qur’anic language classically referred to as Muhkhamand Mutashabih. The Qur’an can be literally specific or greatly metaphoric, often at the same time, and Shaykh Fadhlallah indicates here how these two modes complement each other, yet require diverse means of approach. The similitudes and specificities of this most famous verse indicate the extraordinary interplay between the seen and unseen as they meet in the purified heart, turning and moving with the eternal soul. Shaykh Fadhlallla describes the means and pathways through which the human being can rise to their full potential and resonate with the cosmic soul. He presents various sketches of the evolutionary arc in life: the uncertain lower self awakening to the certainty of the soul. Key to this process is awareness and higher resonance – grooming of the self; Additional key themes include the importance of accountability, the nature of Qur’anic parables and similitudes relevant to the path of awakening & light. The conditions for inner evolvement, growth, transformation and the natural rise in consciousness toward sacred presence in the arc of human life.

The throne verse is a one of several Qur’anic verses that contain complete explications of the ultimate reality, Divine power and control, and the unified nature of existence at every level. It is in order for us to be revived, to be transformed by permanent Life as we journey through transient life. In this talk, Shaykh Fadhlalla explains the nature of cosmic totality and dominion which this ayat reveals. He provides an extended commentary on the divine qualities and attributes, as well as the manner in which the essence manifests itself in order to be known. Shaykh Fadhlalla defines the Qur’anic path of enlightenment as a movement away from self-reliance to complete resonance and dependence on the supreme source. He discusses how accountability, conduct, and cultivating awareness can transform one on the path of awakening. He also touches on the importance of human connection and referencing at different levels as a key feature of the totality of life. Appropriateness, conduct and upbringing are are woven into Qur’anic descriptions and elucidations on the interplay of muhkam and mutashabih: comparability and discrimination or distinction. Shaykh Fadhlalla discloses the keys to harmonizing with the patterns of divine power while recognizing the existential contrast of human frailty and weakness. In so doing, he also describes a host of teachings from the prophetic heritage.

To truly absorb the inner and outer lights and meanings of this verse is to absorb a considerable portion of the immense unveiling that came upon the Prophet Mohammed (SAW).

In this discourse, Shaykh Fadhlalla presents a comprehensive commentary on Surah Ad Dahar, ‘Forgetfulness’, also referred to as Surah Al Insan, or ‘Mankind’. This surah is part of a selection of surahs that contain both Medinan and Meccan verses. It highlights the story of mankind; the purpose of life; and awareness of that which is permanent – sacred presence. The surah presents a sketch of human nature, emphasizing the meaning of duty and the path of wholesomeness. The Qur’an is the manual of life and existence which, if applied and lived, will enhance our attitudes through the journey of life. The miracle of the Qur’an indicates how bursts of light from the timeless zone seamlessly connect within space and time.

Shaykh Fadhlalla uses this surah to present the universal journey of life from the unfathomable origin in precreation to manifestation as sentience, life, and human being. Human consciousness reflects and encompasses both celestial and terrestrial realities. The patterns for fulfillment and ease, or hardship and difficulty exist within us. This discourse emphasises conduct as the key to refinement and access to soul consciousness. Human beings have natural self-checking mechanisms in the interplay of self and soul, which help the evolving self grow and mature in its resonance with the constancy of the soul. Shaykh Fadhlalla presents key descriptions from the prophetic heritage which indicate how service, generosity, and loyalty enhance awareness and access to the divine attributes and qualities. The theme of conduct is returned to often as the most appropriate way to practice virtue and cultivate the best possible attitude, which leads to maturing wisdom and the experience of one cosmic destiny caught in constant awareness and resonance with the divine presence.

Every surah in the Qur’an has its special flavor. Surah Ar Rah’man, or ‘The Beneficent ’, containsthree major sections through which the total Quranic message is relayed. Shaykh Fadhlalla guides the listener through each in a verse by verse disclosure, unfoldinging key words via their root meanings as a way of opening the tapestries of this great surah. The three segments include: the nature of divine mercy as it manifests itself; duality and its basis in complementary opposites; and the akhira, or hereafter. The interplay of dualities and balance is a key theme of this surah, which illustrates how this life is a gymnasium in which we are practicing the return to our origin.

Ar Rah’amnan presents sketches in which multitudes of opposites coalesce and connect: meaning and form; the seen and unseen; the limited and the absolute; the inner life of the human and outer cosmos, each of which mirrors the other in the evolving arc of life until otherness itself is overcome by mercy. Shaykh Fadhlalla indicates the dynamics of growth, development and fruition of a human being as they move towards awakening and wholesomeness, which is ultimately the meaning of the midpoint between existential dualities and the boundless lights of divinity.

In a famous Prophetic tradition. The Prophet Muhammad indicates that Al Ikhlas ‘ The Unity’ is a third of the Qur’an. In this talk, Shaykh Fadhlallah demonstrates the endless layers of nourishment this quintessential declaration of unity provides for those who go into it truly bereft. While we cannot encompass that which causes our existence, if we follow the command and confess that Allah is One - Ahad - we can come to understand the purpose of each life: to see Allah’s attributes in everything. Everywhere we turn is the manifestation of God: the incomparable; the unique. Being this, Allah is beyond need, self-sustaining, constant and unchanging: Samad. Our needs therefore maintain us in humility and allow us to realize in our hearts that which is beyond lack or fulfillment.

Creation is love and generosity, not need. Allah is beyond time, was not born, nor gave birth to any person. Allah is the root and essence of all being, which is what the original Arameic said about Jesus. “Son” meant “from”, and we are all from Allah, by Allah, and returning to Allah. Once you have begun to realize these attributes in your heart - the One and the many, the self-sustaining and a generosity which gives what it needs - you begin to see the same potential in every human being. You see how each self is a way to the soul and how any difficulty it causes, any creational challenge, is simply a means to turn you back to the Creator.

Read the signs of this life: there never was and never will be anything other than Allah. Read it as though it is the first time you are seeing it. Claim ignorance and Allah will bestow His knowledge upon us.

In this powerful talk, Shaykh Fadhlalla illustrates how each cycle – be it annual, monthly, daily, hourly, momentary; or within the blood, breath, human body, earth; or out in the cosmos – has its specific frequency and pattern, and yet each resonates due to the One, original cause and essence of all patterns, vibrations or movements. He describes how laylat al-qadr – the night of power during the month of Ramadan – is the moment when the infinite unseen, divine energy, or sacred presence imprints upon the seen, discernible and therefore dual world of our experience. The practice of death is the practice of eternal life, and laylat al-qadr is the night in which the seen and the unseen are inseparable. You don’t know whether you are, or are not. Whether you are here or nowhere; in heavens, or on earth; nothing exists. It has swallowed you. There is no you. The seen and the unseen and the seer are indistinguishable.

The purpose of the descendants of Adam is, by will, consciously and deliberately to move into the realm of unity. In order to do so, we need to be both capable and willing, which is to say we must align our head and heart with clear intention. How can we clarify our intentions? Abstention from the outer increases retention of the inner. Say no to disturbance, and the harmony is already here. It is a simple formula. How to implement it? Change your mind. How? Be willing to change in every way your attitude. How? Be willing to die.

Don’t fall for personalities: go for the light in your heart and thank whoever helps you in that direction because the light is there, what is stopping it is your own self-made shadow. You’ve come alone, you will go alone and there is no loneliness at all because it is Allah Who has been the energy behind it, with it from beginning to end.

Al Ankabut, or ‘The Spider’, is one of several surahs in the Qur’an which straddles both Meccan and Medinan periods. This surah discloses the themes and dynamics relevant to the nascent Muslim community, which are simultaneously sketches relevant to seekers of all times. Key themes include

● the nature of transformation; commitment and the purpose of human life;

● the meaning of difficulties, suffering, challenges and affliction and how this relates to self-purification;

● awareness and developing the attitudes, qualities and orientation appropriate to completing the purpose of human life;

● struggle and the meaning of migration or turning away from that which is not conducive.

In this discourse, Shaykh Fadhlalla focusses on select verses and root words in order to present the key themes of the surah. The central issue is the nature of trust and the progressive ladder of Iman that encompasses human development. We are put through the processes of this life for us to discover, recognize, and depend solely on the Oneness that encompasses all possibilities, known and unknown. As we are able to exercise trust in the face of any trial, we can perfect our adoration of the supreme source beyond space and time.

Al Qiyamah

The focus of this talk is Surah Al Qiyamah, or ‘The Reckoning’. Shaykh Fadhlalla demonstrates how this surah, like most of the Meccan unveilings, emphasizes Absolute Truth; the end of time; the purpose of human life; our duty; and transition into the next phase.

In the classical maps the human self, and its evolving nature, contains patterns and tendencies with several classifications. Shaykh Fadhlalla indicates how the spectrum of awareness and consciousness is reflected in this surah by considering the root words against the backdrop of prophetic teachings and the heritage of the Semitic Prophets so as to make the transmission of the Qur’anic revelation open to all. The metaphor and the spectrum of consciousness relating to the human journey dilemma and duty are presented. The Qur’an is miraculous in that it indicates how the gross physical connects to the eternal.

The key note of this surah is the dynamic of action and reaction at play in existence and the cybernetic, self-perpetuating system of existence that calls to account, orders, and informs all outcomes and movements in this life. The profound condition of our total accountability for his experiences and interactions with the governing decree of Divine Reality, in combination with human limitation, is the central theme of this surah and discourse. Shaykh Fadhlalla indicates the appropriate means to imbibe and resonate with divine unveilings, prophetic conduct and transformation

Al Inshi’rah

The Qur’an is the ultimate manual of existence, containing within it endless horizons of knowledge that are directly usable to the believer in any situation in which they find themselves. The miracle of the Qur’an is that it uses ordinary language in a transcendent manner: taking discernable linguistic terms and relating them to celestial, cosmic Reality.

The focus of this discourse is Surah Inshi’rah, which relates closely to the surah revealed before it, both historically and in meaning: Ad Duha. In his commentary, Shaykh Fadhlalla draws from both of these surahs, presenting the historical significance surrounding the occurrence of these early unveilings as a metaphor for spiritual unfolding and opening. It is related directly to the Prophet but also, by extension, to all of humanity. The journey of growth and awakening is an unfolding into knowledge and light from the darkness of ignorance. These surahs address this directly, describing the darkness of ignorance which existed at that time and at all times.

We are driven to move along the prescribed, harmonious and appropriate patterns of life. By turning away from the ever changing lower self and worshipping at the altar of constancy – the ever constant light of the soul within our hearts – we can transcend all changing realities to experience that one eternal reality. Shaykh Fadhlallah indicates the interplay between boundless Reality and this limited life, describing the duty this implies for all human beings to rise towards total responsibility and accountability in space and time. Verse by verse, he reveals the pathways that facilitate the way of transformation, focussing on key descriptions like self purification; balance, inner and outer courtesy, the Decree, destiny, and divine will.

Shaykh Fadhlallah demonstrates the meaning of this moment, right Now, presenting a distilled disclosure about the Muhammadi path of salvation that is perfected Iman, Islam, Ih’san. These three stepping stones make it possible to fulfill our human duty and complete the purpose of life by resonating with and witnessing Allah’s perfections.

The third talk in this series completes the extended commentary on Surah al Hadid - the Iron . Al Hadid is a Medinan Surah, revealed several years after the Qur’anic revelation began, after the establishment of the community of Muslims in the Medinan oasis. In this section, Shaykh Fadhlalla further explores the seamless interaction between micro and macro realities, bringing to focus subtle patterns and pitfalls of self-deception, false security, denials, and distraction in contrast to the way of Unity and Cosmic Mercy. Shaykh Fadhlalla persistently indicates the layered tapestry of good news and warning recurrent throughout this Surah. The dual nature of the self is reflected through multiple means and various maps are indicated in addressing these diverse conditions. This surah represents a universal model disclosing patterns that exist between Individuals and collectives and fundamentally between self and soul.

The emphatic theme throughout is the condition and purification of the heart. A detailed description of the stages in which the heart is deadened to its essence and how non-reality can solidify is presented. Equally, the classical model of steps to purification based on various teachings that engender and smooth this process is also provided. The various descriptions and prescriptions highlighted within the verses are brought into focus as means for deeper reflection and aid for inner constancy, awareness and sensitivity. The meaning of association and otherness (shirk) is a key point of consideration in conjunction with the condition of the heart.

The final section is related to understanding the deceptive nature of the world and the appropriate prescriptions and actions relevant to successfully establishing inner equilibrium and the nature and types of Guidance. Shaykh Fadhlalla also provides an extended description of decree and destiny. A vast array of Qur’anic references and teachings, spanning the horizons of the Semitic cultures and traditions, are included along with various pointed and sobering reflections on modernity and contemporary secularism.

This second discourse of the series centers around the great Medinan Surah al Hadid - the Iron. Shaykh Fadhlalla leads the listener verse by verse though the many-tiered ladder of consciousness to which all human beings are exposed and navigate in the arc of life. Al Hadid is a perfect exposition of the seamless balance between the boundless and the limited zones of consciousness, balancing Truth, Light with boundaries, appropriateness, and accountability. Shaykh Fadhlalla indicates six primary dimensions that encapsulate the map of Reality, emphasizing throughout the unified nature of existence.

This talk covers the first four tiers: what is creation and existence; what is the nature of the path; where and what are the sign posts; the path of action and liberation - how to free oneself from oneself and the next zone, akhira. In introducing this discourse, Shaykh Fadhlalla cites examples throughout history of people who have awakened to Oneness and contrasts this with the general drift of civilization and cultures. The purpose of life is to become One.

A feature of these lectures is the in-depth reflection on various Qur’anic key terms and roots. Additionally, key themes include: a critical view of history and the evolution of traditions and culture; free will and determinism; and the developmental stages of the seeker. A central topic in this discourse is living presence and purification of the heart. Shaykh Fadhlalla delineates various subtle dynamics of self-soul interplay, indicating how these micro realties reflect in the macro, evidenced in modern society and evolution of essential knowledge and tradition. Further his contemporary model of the primary forces in life: consciousness, connectedness, and continuity is considered throughout the discourse. Interspersed throughout is a wide array of prophetic teachings, Sufi lore and allegory, lending to a rich offering.

This is the first discourse in a series of lectures recorded at the Johannesburg Sufi Centre. In an intimate, interactive setting, Shaykh Fadhlalla presents a series of classes and commentary on twelve key Surah’s of the Qur’an.

Shaykh Fadhlalla begins by describing how best to approach the Qur’an. In order to appreciate the unique nature of divine knowledge it is necessary to engage with it through the appropriate channels. The two distinct types of knowledge, earthly rational, discernable knowledge and metaphysical insight, are briefly explored.

The discourse moves through the spectrum of Qur’anic study both in terms of the material produced by classical interpreters and the etiquette relevant to the classical study of the Qur’an. The nature of classical language is a major theme. Focus is drawn to the socio-cultural elements that mold the ancient languages and the relevance of understanding them for contemporary seekers. The classical Arabs lived a nomadic life, intertwined with the vast silence of the desert and had a specific means of survival. The unveiling of the Qur’an had an incredible impact on their vision of reality and understanding of the nature and destiny of the human being.

How best to study linguistic roots and key words in the Qur’an is explained in detail. Shaykh Fadhlalla weaves his insights together with various prophetic traditions, allegories and an array of subtle keys, prescriptions and interpretations drawn from the Muhammadi Masters, presenting the appropriate aids for navigation for the seeker looking to enjoy the amazing connections between humanity and divinity, as represented in the Qur’an.

The third segment continues with specific questions directed at Shaykh Fadhlalla and a panel of respondents who illustrate the multidimensional nature of the Qur’anic revelation. Shaykh Fadhlalla reiterates the need to cultivate the appropriate attitudes and courtesy in approaching the Qur’an. The Qur’an is directly revealed knowledge that relates earthly appearances and connections with the infinite unseen: it is about guidance and hence requires a special attitude. The key to awakening with the Qur’an is trust and acceptance in the prophetic access to supernatural insight - into the evident nature and the inner workings of man. If one can cultivate patience with the unfolding layers of meaning and logic, it reveals itself.

Various knowledge and sciences have developed historically that form part of the ecology of Qur’anic study. This presentation details briefly some of these and various linguistic approaches and issues, paralleled with an overview of the historical context of revelation and socio-cultural changes within the constant human quest for meaning and light. Additional themes include: approaching sha’riah, it’s meaning and its purpose in living correctly and in harmony; micro and macro dynamics; cycles, orbits, opposites and complements presented in the Qur’anic disclosures as related to scientific discoveries, time and non-time and the interspace of existence; and the central theme of alignment with the Divine Will. Shaykh Fadhlalla presents various prescriptive keys, emphasizing honesty, accountability and indicating the web of unified interconnection in which all these dynamics fit and coalesce in the way of faith, trust and abandonment. Awakening is a process of displacement. This is the source of all addictions: losing the self into the light of the soul.

In this second episode, Shaykh Fadhlalla responds to questions related to transformation through the Qur’an. This is a wide presentation of several major topics, including the map of reality; the Qur’an as the multidimensional book of guidance; the interplay of the two essential zones or aspects of existence; the diverse and complementary dynamics in combining the heavenly and earthly aspects of humanity; the meaning of service; appropriate action; and awakening. Shaykh Fadhlalla describes the means and modes that lead any seeker toward reconciling and balancing the duality, and the way in which the leading light of the heart may be brought forth. This knowledge is presented with various injunctions intended to cultivate the appropriate attitude and virtue in applying the directives of the Prophetic map, which facilitate smooth entry through the doorways of transformation.

The courtesy required to approach the language of the Qur’an in order to resonate with its lights and meanings is a theme throughout. Various key classical Arabic phrases and words are discussed as windows into the transformative dimensions of the Qur’an. Shaykh Fadhlalla unravels the multi-layer meanings of many words and verses as he presents the tapestry of living trust (Iman), perfected submission (Islam), and resonance with Divine Consciousness. Additionally, a host of Prophetic traditions are interspersed throughout, in combination with various classical Sufi teachings and pointed commentaries on socio-political history as it contrasts with the modern and Islamic world.
