A Few Hard Truths About Divorce

A Few Hard Truths About Divorce

I've had a number of listeners ask me to do an episode on divorce, and honestly, I don't think I was ready until now. It took a lot of months really thinking about how I wanted to talk about such a deep, raw, and painful life experience. After a lot of meditating about what to do, the idea for today's episode came to me. In today's episode, I don't mention anyone by name or offer details about my divorce. Instead, I talk about universal truths that no one would understand or learn unless you've experienced divorce yourself. Everyone's situation is different so what I talk about today stems from my personal experience and the emotions involved as well as those in my inner circle who have also been through a divorce. Along with these truths, there are moments of light where you will see that if you are on the brink of a divorce, all is not lost. I promise you that.

5 Things to Smile About - April 2023

5 Things to Smile About - April 2023

This month was a bit brighter than March, and I'm so grateful for that. With that being said, last month reminded me of something Glennon Doyle said, which was, "Being fully human isn't about feeling happy. It's about feeling everything." The range of emotion we experience is what makes human beings such a unique species. I enjoy creating the '5 Things to Smile About' episodes because they encourage me to think of at least five things that made me smile during a month. It's a type of gratitude practice and any gratitude we can add to our lives offers joy and builds us up. Once you listen to this, I encourage you to partake in the practice and notice how it offers light to your life.

How To Be the Light in a Seemingly Dark World

How To Be the Light in a Seemingly Dark World

The world can seem like a very dark place, but we have the power to change our experience and perception of it. In today's episode, I discuss several ways to offer more light into the universe. It's not as challenging as you may think. I recently completed a guided meditation with Gabby Bernstein about being a light worker. This powerful meditation inspired this podcast episode. Imagine how much brighter the world would be if every person tried to offer a little more light.

Q&A with Matthew - Deeper Love Through Learning

Back by popular demand, my other half, Matthew, joined me on today’s podcast episode. The last episode we recorded together was very well received. We each came up with five questions (for a total of 10) and answered them on air. Our goal with these episodes is to learn more about one another and encourage other couples to step back from the heaviness of life and reconnect through fun and authentic conversation. Some of the questions include --> Who was your celebrity crush when you were younger? What music did you like in high school? What was your most embarrassment moment? What about me makes you smile?

How to Stay Sane During the Sandwich Phase

How to Stay Sane During the Sandwich Phase

I get pretty vulnerable in this episode because it’s been an emotional week. Since my mom passed away almost seven years ago, my dad has been struggling emotionally and physically. Worrying about and caring for him while taking care of my own children puts me in a group called the sandwich generation. We are people in our 30s, 40s, or 50s, who are sandwiched in the middle of two generations. Last Friday my 78-year old dad fell and broke his neck. He's doing well and there are no additional complications. He should be transferring to some type of rehabilitation facility soon. Over the past week, I've been driving back and forth to a hospital 35 miles away to sit with him and talk to doctors and nurses while also taking care of my kids and working. This experience has shown me what it feels like to truly be sandwiched. In today's episode, I tell the story of how I came to be in this place and the lessons I've learned along the way with the goal of inspiring those of you in a similar situation. And if you're not yet in this phase, I also offer advice to ensure you are fully appreciating the stage of life when your kids are young and you're parents are still healthy. What a gift that is! Lastly, I discuss how our parents’ unresolved trauma affects how they parented us and how our unresolved emotions affect our children and what we can do about it.

An Open Conversation Between Two Best Friends

An Open Conversation Between Two Best Friends

The amazing Lana Jones joins me on today's episode. She's also been my best friend since seventh grade. You can't help but feel the authentic connection she and I share. My gratitude for her is boundless. During our conversation, we offer a glimpse into our friendship and explore a few deep and lighthearted topics. I plan to have her join me in future episodes where we'll dig further into some of the topics we touch on today. Since we're focusing on The Wheel Life during the month of March, today's episode highlights the Friends & Family spoke. I think we can all agree that friends, whether new or old, are an integral component of a full, meaningful life.

13 Health Tidbits That Changed My Life

13 Health Tidbits That Changed My Life

In 2013-2014, I experienced a series of severe migraines and ear infections. I was kind of shocked when we drilled down to why the headaches and infections were happening. Once we discovered the origin of the dis-ease, I made a couple of significant changes that truly impacted my life. Since then, I've made additional health and wellness adjustments. On today's episode, I share 13 of those with you (see below). This is not an all-inclusive list. In fact, I didn't even include exercise, but any kind of movement is obviously wonderful for the human body.
1. Rid your home of toxins.
2. Entertain the thought of essential oils.
3. Be careful with alcohol.
4. Utilize breath work.
5. Be cautious of social media.
6. Go outside when things feel off.
7. Limit caffeine after 11 a.m.

How to Write and Publish a Children's Book + The Secret Ingredient to Amazing Pasta Salad

How to Write and Publish a Children's Book + The Secret Ingredient to Amazing Pasta Salad

In 2019 I published a children's book called The Jolt Around the World. Since then, numerous people have asked about the process of writing and publishing a book. It would be impossible for me to sit down with each individual and explain how to write a children's book, so I decided to share the information through a podcast episode. If there is anyone out there who has a dream of bringing their idea to life, I want to help make that happen. In today's episode, I offer a little about my own writing and publishing journey as well as the 10 principles of picture book writing, created by Ann Whitford Paul, author of Writing Picture Books: A Hands-on Guide From Story Creation to Publication. During the month of March we are focusing on The Wheel of Life, a diagnostic tool meant to help people harmonize the six core areas of our lives: health, relationships, spiritual/personal development, career, family and friends, and money/finances. If one of your career goals is to publish a children's book, I hope you find this episode to be a great resource and motivator.
P.S. At the very end, I share the secret ingredient to make amazing pasta salad.

The Wheel of Life & Using Our Past Self as a Muse

The Wheel of Life & Using Our Past Self as a Muse

I don't like the phrase "life balance." It implies that all aspects of our lives have to be in equilibrium, which is simply impossible. Instead, I've begun to think of my existence in terms of "life harmony." To me, this feels more fluid and attainable. In today's episode, I introduce something called The Wheel of Life, created by Paul J. Meyer, which focuses on the six core areas of our lives: health, relationships, spiritual/personal development, career, family and friends, and money/finances. I offer an easy self-assessment exercise to help you figure out which area(s) of your life need the most immediate attention. I also talk about the concept of being our own muse, of using our past accomplishments, experiences, and emotions as momentum and inspiration for where we want to be now or in the future. I really hope you take some time in the next few days to work on your own Wheel of Life. As they say, knowledge is power, especially when you put the knowledge to work.

5 Ways to Help Others in a Self-Help World

We live in a world obsessed with self-help. Sometimes, however, it's the things we do for others that truly make the difference. And the irony is that when we work to support other people, we gain so much in return. In today's episode, I offer five ways to help lift others in a seemingly selfish world. I also share something I am taking on (instead of giving up) for Lent.

Skin Hunger and Why We Require Physical Touch

Did you know skin hunger is an actual thing? When we have't been touched or haven't touched others in a while, we deplete the oxytocin in our brains which affects many aspects of our lives. On today's episode, I talk about what skin hunger or touch deprivation is and how we can make sure it doesn't negatively impact our lives or the lives of those we love.

How to Heighten the Feng Shui of Your Bedroom

How to Heighten the Feng Shui of Your Bedroom

Feng shui is an ancient philosophy that focuses on the energy (chi) flowing through the spaces in which we work, play, and live. It's a really cool topic to explore. Many of us already do things that would fall under the umbrella of "creating good feng shui," such as decluttering, having plants, creating balance in rooms, etc. In today's episode, I talk specifically about the feng shui of a bedroom. I offer tips to help you create a bedroom that's more conducive to love, romance, and connection. I'm not a feng shui expert, but I am having a lot of fun learning about it and experimenting with the principles.

The Coming Together & Falling Apart of Relationships

The Coming Together & Falling Apart of Relationships

During the month of February, I'll be talking a lot about relationships. Whether it's a romance, friendship, or even the one we have with our own soul, relationships create the magic in life. In today's episode, I discuss Knapp's Relationship Development Model and how every relationship goes through definitive stages. If you're struggling in a relationship or someone you love is struggling, this podcast episode may help you figure out where that breakdown is happening and what to do about it. I also talk about relational maintenance and offer some strategies to nurture a relationship if it's one you're hoping to have for a very long time. I'm not a couples counselor by any stretch, but with a background in psychology, I'm forever learning and researching about the human mind and social development. Lastly, to see a helpful visual of Knapp's model, do a quick Google search to find the Knapp pie chart and see how some of the stages intertwine and can actually work to strengthen relationships. I hope you enjoy today's episode.

5 Things to Smile About - January 2023

5 Things to Smile About - January 2023

It's easy to spiral into a mindset of negativity and overthinking, but with a little practice, we can shift our habits to where we automatically focus on the good in our lives instead of the bad. One of my life mantras is "Whatever we appreciate, we create more of." If we focus on and appreciate the good in our lives, we will create more good in our lives. The opposite is true as well. In this episode, I offer five things that made me smile this month (in no particular order). This is a practice I started many years ago when I was blogging three times a week on my blog, Zealous Mom. No matter the mood I'm in going into it, simply focusing on five things that made me smile during the month instantly shifts my energy. After listening to my list, I encourage you to do the same. Manifesting 101: How to Create a Life You Love

Manifesting 101: How to Create a Life You Love

Most of us know a little about or have at least heard the term "manifesting." In early 2022, I became very curious about the practices surrounding manifestation and began performing them in my own life, only to be very surprised by how much they increased my vibration and energy. I also realized how throughout my life, I have unknowingly manifested people, things, and situations by subconsciously performing the steps of manifestation. In today's episode, I dive into the basics of manifesting and discuss the five main steps of this age-old practice. I also give several examples of things I've recently manifested into my life. Below are time stamps for each step to make referencing easier. I hope you enjoy, and good luck on your unique manifesting journey.  Get clear on your desires: 9:10 Proclaim and visualize: 15:40 Identify limiting beliefs: 20:30 Take inspired action: 23:02 Be patient and receive: 28:28

How Worrying Breeds Chaos + Powerful Signs From the Universe

Gabby Bernstein says, "Worry is a prayer for chaos." I learned that firsthand this week. I also learned how to read signs from the universe and how these signs can help us get through challenging situations. Today's episode focuses on this very trying week and my son's worrisome bacterial skin infection. I also talk about how love and unique signs from the universe calmed my fears and encouraged me to be a source of strength for my child. This week was a huge reminder that what we focus on we create more of.

Secrets to Living a Longer Life

Secrets to Living a Longer Life

I want to live until I'm at least 100-years old. I want to see flowers blossom, snow fall, kids laugh, the sun rise and set, and the taste of delicious food for as long as possible. I want to be with my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I want to travel and see so many parts of this beautiful earth. Also, I believe our souls move on past this lifetime. It's our responsibility to take care of them and help them grow while they are in our bodies.
Recently I learned about the Blue Zone phenomenon. The Blue Zones are five regions around the globe where people live well past age 100. These folks are called centenarians. On today's episode, I tell you a few stories about why elderly people are my crystal balls and also offer 'The Power of 9' which are the 9 things the people in Blue Zones do to ensure a long, happy, purposeful life. You can learn even more by following Dan Buettner on Instagram. He is the founder of the Blue Zones.

Hot Topics in Skincare for 2023

Hot Topics in Skincare for 2023

Whether we're 23 or 43 and whether it's acne or wrinkles, most of us worry about our skin. My sister, Savannah, is a brilliant esthetician. She has been passionate about skincare since pimples first started popping up on our faces when we were adolescents. In today's episode, she and I discuss hot topics in skincare including navigating the world of serums and eye patches, morning vs. nighttime routines, caring for your skin in the winter months, the importance of seeking a professional, and psychodermatology, which is the connection between skin and our minds. Below are specific topics with the time stamp in case you want to revisit a particular part of the conversation. I plan to feature Savannah and her vast knowledge periodically but until then, be sure to follow her on Instagram at skin_by_savannah.  Caring for skin in winter months: 1:13 Layering technique: 2:21 Sunscreen indoors? 4:09 The 411 on serums: 5:25 Under eye patches: 8:02 Are “green” products effective? 10:59 Essential oils on the skin: 15:14 Seeking a professional: 16:27 Slugging: 17:08 Psychodermatology: 19:45 A final note on skincare: 27:55

P.S. After publishing this episode, my 13-year old son expressed concerns about slugging's impact on the environment considering Aquaphor, Vaseline and CeraVe are made from petroleum which is a fossil fuel. He definitely has a point and one that I should have addressed in the original audio. With that in mind, alternatives to petroleum-based products are Waxelene, beeswax, shea butter, and jojoba oil. I love when my children enlighten me.
