Episode #77. Interview with Andrew May on burnout

In this episode Shelley speaks with Andrew May, founder and CEO of StriveStronger.com, on what creates burnout, how to manage it and how to avoid it.

What’s most interesting about burnout, Andrews shares, is that “burnout is not about hours worked. If you are passionate about what you do, if you have meaning in what you do, if you’re getting an exchange more than just money, you don’t clock in on the hours.”

He talks about finding purpose and working sustainably. This is a great conversation for every leader to consider their approach to work, life and play.

 🎙️🎙️PODCAST - Episode #58 - Interview with Suki Singh on Mental Strength🎙️🎙️

In this episode Shelley speaks with Suki Singh, ultra-marathon runner and author, about mental strength and how much of our success depends on our thoughts and our will to push through the discomfort.

They talk about the three components of building this toughness around having a meaningful purpose, being well prepared and having a community that can support you along the way. Where any one of these are missing, your chance of failing increases, with all three present, you really are invincible!

Episode #46 - Shelley's thoughts on time management

In this episode Shelley shares her thoughts on managing time including:

Reducing distractions: Turn off your notifications, pop-ups and even that tiny little envelope that sits in the bottom corner of your screen. Aim to only check and respond to emails once every 1-2 hours if possible. You'll be amazed at what you can accomplished when you're not constantly interrupted.

Being intentional: Make sure you're really clear on 'why' you're doing something. This includes attending meetings, running reports, catching up with a colleague for a coffee and even going for a walk at lunchtime. Keeping your intention front of mind will minimise distractions and ensure you get full value from the activity.

Managing your energy: If you're tired, stressed, burnt out or overwhelmed you're going to be less effective with your time. Learn what activities give you energy and make time to do them regularly. Note there's a difference between activities you enjoy (e.g. drinking a glass or red wine while cooking dinner which will impact your mental clarity the following day) versus activities that are good for you (e.g. drinking a herbal tea while watching the sunset).

There are endless ways to manage your time and not all things work for all people. So if you are looking for more ideas please get in touch for a conversation that is specific to you.

Episode #35 - Leadership insights from my publisher - Lesley Williams

Episode #35 - Leadership insights from my publisher - Lesley Williams

In this episode Shelley speaks with the publisher of The Dynamic Leader, Lesley Williams, who owns Major Street Publishing. Lesley shares her experience of working for her dad early in her career and the lessons he taught her around trust and empowerment.

She shares one of the keys to successful leadership is being “nice to people” and supporting them through the good and the bad. She recites the words of her dad that “no one ever responds to being told off” and how she’s applied this philosophy with her own team. It’s important to recognise that we all make mistakes and that we can use them as opportunities to learn and grow.

Lesley founded Major Street Publishing in 2009 and works with authors to publish books on leadership, business, the share market, property markets, superannuation or personal financial planning. She says that she learns something new from every book and believes that the key to getting a book written is about finding what works for you and remain focused on the outcome (not necessarily the process).

For those of you looking for other inspiring reads by Major Street Publishing, Lesley recommends:

Raising Leaders by Wendy Born - which talks about the similarities between parenting and leadership. Flawsome by Georgia Murch - which highlights the need for all of us to embrace who we are and what it looks like to be real in all areas of our life. Rules of Belonging by Fiona Robertson - which shares valuable insights on team culture.
