Caring for People Experiencing Homelessness with Khloe Thompson (Khloe Kares)
Khloe Thompson met a homeless woman on her way to school when she was just 8 years old. After learning about her life, Khloe felt compelled to do something to help her. She sewed together a care bag, filled it with toiletries, and gifted it to her. That simple act of kindness grew into Khloe Kares, a nonprofit organization that serves the homeless and empowers kids to be a force for good in their communities. In this episode, Khloe shares the challenges she experiences as a young changemaker and gives advice to people who also wish to make a difference in their communities.

Ending Period Poverty with Megha Desai
The stigma around periods contributes to what is now known as period poverty. Period poverty is a global issue affecting millions of women and girls who do not have access to menstrual hygiene resources. In India, nearly a quarter of teens drop out of school when they get their periods due to the lack of handwashing or toilet facilities.
Breaking the stigma around periods is a key first step in alleviating period poverty. Because if we can’t begin to talk about this issue, how are we gonna solve it?
In this episode, we hear the story of Megha Desai, president of the Desai Foundation, an organization that focuses on elevating the health and livelihood of children and women in India and in the U.S. On the show, we talk about how Megha transitioned from the corporate world to working on a cause that she's now dedicated her life to — providing job opportunities for women and helping end period poverty.

Gaining Gender Equality Through STEM with Anjali Chadha
Despite making up half of the total U.S. college educated workforce, only 1 in 4 STEM jobs in the U.S. are held by women. When it comes to minority women, these numbers go even lower. Black women make up only 2.5% of the science and engineering workforce, while Hispanic women represent 2.3% of science and engineering positions.
Anjali Chadha, whose family immigrated from India, was able to merge her interest and passion in STEM and racial inequality at an early age. With the help of her parents, Anjali founded Empowered, a nonprofit that trains minority high school girls in technological skills — all before stepping into highschool.
This episode takes us on Anjali’s journey as a young founder who saw the challenges faced by minority students and proactively used her gifts to make sure that they felt seen and had viable paths to successful STEM careers.
Kindness Quote from Anjali Chadha: I think as soon as I found a support system, I was able to really reevaluate my mindset and really understand that it's not enough to just be working on projects to help people who aren't in my personal life. It is equally important to be kind, supportive, and caring to those who are there for me.

Lifting Girls and the World Through Storytelling with Christina Lowery
Globally, 130 million girls are out of school. But, with this glaring statistic also comes a mountain of evidence showing that girls' education is the most powerful investment towards eradicating poverty. Educated women are more likely to invest in their families and send their children to school. That meant, educating a girl had a ripple effect that lasted across generations.
While working on a documentary film, Christina Lowery came across this data and decided to bring this truth to the broader public. Today, Christina leads Girl Rising as the nonprofit organization’s CEO. Girl Rising uses the power of storytelling to ensure that girls around the world are educated and empowered. What began as a film about nine unforgettable girls, written by award-winning authors and voiced by some of Hollywood's biggest celebrities, grew into an organization that has impacted 200,000 adolescents, alongside 120 partners in 11 countries. In this episode, we also hear from Girl Rising’s Vice President of Programs Judithe Registre. On the podcast, Judithe discusses the power of storytelling as a catalyst for change.
Kindness Quote from Judithe Registre: “The very act of actually getting to know people through their stories is an act of kindness and engagement. It's you showing up with some degree of vulnerability — seeing you in your power, seeing you just as who you are, our presence in the world, that you belong in the world.”

Protecting the Lives of LGBTQ Homeless Youth with Carl Siciliano
It’s estimated that as many as 40% of the 4.2 million homeless youth in the country identify as LGBTQ. This is a shocking statistic, especially when considering that only 7% of the overall population in the U.S. come from the LGBTQ community.
In this episode, we're sharing the story of Carl Siciliano, a pioneer in fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ homeless youth. Carl is the founder of the Ali Forney Center, the largest program in the nation dedicated to meeting the needs of this population. Carl founded the center in honor of Ali Forney. Ali was an LGBTQ homeless person who fought relentlessly to support and advocate for their community. In 1997 and at 22 years old, Ali was tragically killed.
Today, the Ali Forney Center is now housing 250 young people every night. Besides their headquarters, they opened a 24/7 center in Harlem. Honoring Ali's Legacy, the organization provides mental health services, as well as housing, job training and placement programs.

Disrupting Barriers to Success in the Latino Community with Michelle Navarro
When we talk about education, we don’t really highlight how culture impacts it. Did you know that Hispanics have the highest high school and university dropout rate of any other population? Some dropout to work instead and support their families. But there are also cultural factors at play. For Hispanic women, in particular, the macho culture might reinforce the idea that they are supposed to become housewives and mothers instead of focusing on school. Hispanic youth also have the highest teen pregnancy rate of any other population.
Our guest today is Michelle Navarro, a history professor at Dallas College. Michelle has Mexican-American roots but grew up disconnected from her heritage. Throughout the years, she became interested in making sense of her family history and Hispanic identity. In an effort to help other students do the same, she formed the student club Achieving Latino Academic Success, or ALAS. At ALAS, Michelle inspires members of the club, especially women, to dream beyond their cultural restraints.

Fighting Gender Inequality Through Comedy with Lynn Harris
Despite the strides women have made in the comedy world, studies have shown women are stereotyped as less funny than men. Female comedians often get less stage time than their male counterparts. And only one female comedian—Amy Schumer—has ever made it to Forbes’s highest-paid comedians list. Lynn Harris, a feminist entrepreneur, journalist, author, and comedian started GOLD Comedy in 2016 with this in mind.
GOLD Comedy is a platform for teen girls, young women and non-binary folks who want to turn their sense of humor into their superpower. The organization started with giving live comedy classes, online resources, and organizing events for teen girls. As CEO, Lynn is teaching comedy to encourage young people to have their voices heard –both on and off stage.

Rising up For Kids with Learning Disabilities with Gia Gambino
Did you know that 1 in 5 children in the U.S. have learning disabilities like dyslexia? These disabilities have nothing to do with intelligence and yet, students often struggle in school because they fail to get the support they need. Gia Gambino grew up having dyslexia. By middle school, Gia had overcome many of her reading challenges. But, she still had a hard time recognizing her skills.
Gia worked hard on herself and slowly became more confident in her ability to speak up on things that mattered to her. In 2020, Gia participated in "Call For Kindness" a national competition from nonprofit organization Riley's Way Foundation, which awards grants to teen-led projects that inspire kindness, strengthen communities, and bring people together. Gia's submission involved Rise, a youth-led project she founded to support students with learning differences and their parents. In this episode, we hear Gia's story of resilience and determination to create inclusive environments, while also tackling pressing societal topics like understanding privilege and changing the narrative around immigration.

Living a Life of Service with Mike Burns
According to a 2019 survey by the Pew Research Center, 64 percent of Americans look up to people who have served in the military, regardless of political support for conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, as the new generation of members of the military is much smaller than it used to be, many Americans don’t know a veteran anymore. But, as you may know, serving your country comes in many forms — just like doctors, teachers, first responders, mothers and community leaders who have put the lives of others before their own.
Mike Burns is a former Army officer with 13 years of service and is the founder and CEO of Service First, a jewelry brand that celebrates service. Mike is also the host of the podcast “Redefining the Influencer,” one of the shows from Hueman Group Media. Through “Redefining the Influencer,” Mike is committed to shine a light on stories of those who have navigated a life of sacrifice, found joy in service, and made a commitment to the greater good.

Changing Lives of the "Unemployable" Through Kitchens For Good with Aviva Paley
When people have a troubled past, they often have a hard time shaking off negative stereotypes. For this reason, those coming out of prison, homelessness and foster care have some of the highest unemployment rates in our society. Before the pandemic, these ranged from 27 to 42 percent. And COVID-19 has only worsened these numbers, as we hit the highest unemployment rate since the great depression.
Our guest this week is Aviva Paley, co-founder and Senior Director of Kitchens for Good. Aviva not only helps lift people out of poverty by getting them employed, but through Kitchens For Good, she’s simultaneously alleviating hunger and food waste in San Diego, California.

Empowering Women Through Social Entrepreneurship with Liz Bohannon
According to the nonprofit organization Uganda 4 Her, around half of the girls in Uganda between the ages of 15 to 24 are illiterate. Meanwhile, 10% to 25% is how much a girl’s income will increase with every extra year of education. It’s also reported that an educated woman in Uganda will invest 90% of her income into her family.
It’s truly admirable when someone sees a huge problem, and takes steps to come up with a solution, even if they have to go on a long winding road to get there. That is the amazing story of our guest, friend, and partner, Liz Bohannon. Liz is the founder of the socially conscious fashion company, Sseko Designs, and the fair-trade coffee brand, Together Coffee. She is also the author of "Beginner’s Pluck" and the host of another podcast on the HGM network, "Plucking Up".
In 2009, Sseko began as a way to generate income for high potential, talented young women in Uganda to continue on to university. A decade later, the company welcomed its biggest class of college-bound women in Uganda to date and continues to grow its impact with artisans around the world.

Transforming Inmates Through Entrepreneurial Passion with Bryan Kelley
The U.S. has the highest prison and jail population in the world, with over two million people serving time in one of the country's correctional facilities. Each year, more than 600,000 people are released from state and federal prisons. These people are often unprepared to overcome the many obstacles they will soon face. During their time in prison, they may have cut contact with friends and family who could have otherwise supported them. Once they’re out, their criminal record also makes it extremely challenging to find a job and housing.
This week's guest is Bryan Kelley, CEO of the Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP). Power of New Philanthropy with Dr. Angela Jackson
The coronavirus pandemic has made existing inequalities in our country even worse. Up to 86% of initial pandemic layoffs were of low wage workers — meaning jobs that pay under $40,000 per year. These jobs have disproportionate concentrations of African-Americans, Hispanics, and people with a high-school education or less.
At the same time, the digital revolution is creating a widening skill gap. Many people who are unemployed during this pandemic are now seeking to acquire skills for new careers, yet do not have the resources to pay for training.
In this episode, we’re sharing the story of Angela Jackson, a partner at New Profit, a venture organization that backs social entrepreneurs who are advancing equity and opportunity in the U.S. Angela shares why it’s critical for those in a place of privilege to use it for good and why it’s important to get capital into the hands of those who need it most.

Closing the 228 Year Racial Wealth Gap with Jonathan Johnson
Did you know that the net worth of a typical White family is nearly ten times greater than that of a Black family? And since the 1970s, this racial wealth gap has grown steadily.
In 2016, it was reported that it would take 228 years for the average Black family to build the wealth of an average white family today. Our guest this week, Jonathan Johnson, set out to change that. Jonathan is the founder and CEO of Rooted School, a nonprofit that partners with communities to open charter high schools that address local talent gaps.
We’re sharing Jonathan’s powerful story — including how he fought hard to become the first person in his family to graduate from college and pave pathways for students to find financial freedom.

Look For The Helpers with Branden Harvey
Did you know that the demand for good news has increased during the pandemic? As reported by the New York Times in April this year, social media accounts and news sites that deliver positive storytelling like Upworthy and the Good News Movement have seen their audience sizes grow. On the first episode of our brand new season, we’re excited to feature Branden Harvey — a storyteller focused on the good in the world. Branden is the host of the podcast Sounds Good, the creator of the Goodnewspaper, a printed newspaper full of good news, and built an online community of more than 250,000 world changers.
In this episode, Branden talks about how his media company Good Good Good is inspired by a quote from Mister Rogers, “look for the helpers.” He also shares how he had the not so brilliant idea of launching a print newspaper in the digital age — and how it was embraced by thousands of good news seekers.

Becoming Better Grownups with Brad Montague
After the hit web series “Kid President" wrapped up in 2016, its genius creator Brad Montague wanted to continue taking on projects for children in television and books. But, they wouldn’t happen and Brad thought that the world wouldn’t let him make anything else.
To ease his pain and depression, Brad started visiting classrooms to hear from kids — tiny humans who inspired Brad with their fascinating, sometimes silly, but valuable thoughts and musings. In his tour, he didn’t make big speeches, but ventured to hear from his audience. He asked kids critical questions like ‘What does it mean to be a grown-up?’ and ‘How can we be better grownups?’
In this episode, Brad shares with us his own colorful journey, including the challenges and the silver lining of launching his second book “Becoming Better Grownups” in the middle of a pandemic. He’ll share what true kindness means to him and how our lives can be made better if we re-awakened the child within us.

Paying It Forward with Darleen Santore
It’s hard to get away from bad news these days — death, millions of people who lost their jobs and just fear of what will happen in the coming weeks, months, and even the rest of the year. And while it may be difficult to find it, there is a silver lining: more people are helping their neighbors out and demonstrating acts of kindness.
In this episode, we’ll be hearing the story of Darleen Santore, the US ambassador of Global Pay It Forward Day. Darlene, better known as “Coach Dar”, helps athletes, CEOs and entrepreneurs break through barriers as a motivational speaker and therapist. Through her professional career, she found another calling — a leader and catalyst for kindness. Around 6 years ago, she was tapped to lead Pay It Forward Day in the US, a full day celebrating kindness and takes place every year on April 28th. While it isn’t attached to a specific organization or foundation, the movement is now celebrated in 86 countries. This week, Darleen will be sharing how Pay It Forward Day came about, how we can get involved and in what ways we can integrate more kindness in our daily lives.

Feeding Frontliners with Ben Goldberg
Doctors, nurses, healthcare workers and hospital staff have emerged as soldiers and heroes in our war against COVID-19. For those of us sheltering in place, we might feel a little lost or even powerless in this situation. But for people like Ben Goldberg, a native New Yorker, supporting frontliners the best way he knows how was a no-brainer. Ben is the founder and president of the New York Food Trucks Association (NYFTA), and in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the NYFTA and its members urgently rolled out "Frontline Food Trucks", a program that provides thousands of healthcare workers free servings of coffee and other nutritional snacks and meals every day via their food trucks. NYFTA partnered with brands like Sweetgreen, Chobani and La Colombe whose donated products help feed tens of thousands of frontline medical staff who are not only risking their lives, but who have also been deprived of food options due to hospital cafeterias and surrounding food establishments shutting down.
In this episode, you'll also hear from Julia Perez, Digital Marketing Director at CORE Foods. CORE Foods makes organic, fresh, healthy on-the-go snacks and as a B Corporation, it's also committed to reinvesting profits back into their food, community, and movement. To support the Frontline Food Trucks program, the company donated over 10,000 of their Organic Overnight Oat Bars + Probiotics.

Acts of Humanity in Unprecedented Times with Ann Lee
The world has changed because of COVID-19. This pandemic has turned all of our lives upside down. Around the world, people are grieving the loss of their loved ones. Businesses shuttered and millions have lost their jobs. But in this madness and time of uncertainty, there are pockets of hope. On Sincerely, Hueman, our mission to share stories of kindness in action, proves to be more important than ever.
For today’s brand new episode, we’re featuring CORE (formerly known as J/P Haitian Relief Organization), a nonprofit organization founded by actor Sean Penn. We recorded this episode with their CEO Ann Lee back in February, before the quarantine was announced.
On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti. In a matter of 35 seconds, 250,000 lives were lost. For over a decade, CORE has been rebuilding communities destroyed by the earthquake. It has developed a holistic approach that is not only reactive, but also proactive. The organization runs life-saving programs around youth development and education, women’s entrepreneurship, reforestation and climate resilience, and community health, to name a few. CORE's programs have since expanded to Puerto Rico, across the Caribbean, and to the US gulf states.
In this episode, you’ll hear about CORE’s profound impact in vulnerable communities. We’re sharing Ann’s incredible journey in the development sector, how she crossed paths with Sean in Haiti, and how she deals with injustice and channels her anger into acts of humanity.
Special COVID-19 announcement: CORE is working to provide vulnerable communities with access to household items, hygiene kits, and food, during these times where access is critical and resources are limited. Additionally, CORE is working closely with the Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles Fire Department to provide free drive-through testing for high-risk individuals. To donate, sign up to volunteer and get information about testing, please visit COREresponse.org/covid19.

Teaching Kids Kindness with Nicki Dingraudo
Nicki Dingraudo had the most amazing teacher in first grade. She could tell every detail of her classroom, and she’s the reason Nicki fell in love with education. She knew teachers played a role in teaching students how to be kind and how to be human. After moving to Arizona from the suburbs of Chicago, she was able to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. But it wasn’t what she had imagined. Nicki had a really rough time and she would find herself crying on the way to work.
In finding other teachers online, Nicki felt a sense of belonging and deep connection. She knew other teachers shared the same experiences and could empathize with her, especially on days when she felt like she wasn’t doing her best as a teacher.
After a couple years in the classroom, she began to look for some extra inspiration and started her little corner of the teacher Instagram world, which she called “The Sprinkle Topped Teacher”. Through her posts and resources she provides on her site, Nicki created a support system for teachers who are on the frontlines of shaping the lives of future generations. In this episode, Nicki talks about why she built a strong community of teachers, how we can teach our kids kindness in the classroom, and ways we can practice gratitude in our own lives.

Building a Kinder World Through Education and Science with Jaclyn Lindsey and Melissa Burmester
When Jaclyn Lindsey and Melissa Burmester were at a crossroads in their career, they didn't know they would both meet at the intersection of kindness. After working as colleagues at charity:water, they both pursued to build a kinder world. Jaclyn personally experienced bullying, and it left a deep scar and painful memory. Now a mother, she longs to help shape a world where her child would be safe and treated with kindness. In this pursuit, both Jaclyn and Melissa couldn’t find solutions that were based on research and academia. Filling this gap turned into their nonprofit, Kindness.org.
The organization collaborates with academics, researchers, and volunteers to investigate the "causes and consequences of kindness". Their programs include "Learn Kind", where they bring kindness and social-emotional education to classroom and "Kindlab" which uses an "interdisciplinary mix of research in genetics, neuroscience, psychology, economics, and anthropology" to share learnings around the impact of kindness, to name a few.

Kindness For The Hurting and Hopeless with Jamie Tworkowski
This story is about kindness through the lens of someone hurting and the person helping them find hope in spite of it.
In February 2006, Jamie’s life took a 180 when he met Renee Yohe, a young woman who was struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts. Jamie and Renee spent time together before Renee entered a treatment center. Jamie wrote about his encounter with Renee and, while not having any experience as a writer or blogger, composed a riveting blog post titled “To Write Love on Her Arms.” In 2007, the heartwrenching and compelling story of Renee and Jamie's 5-day encounter turned into a movement and officially became a nonprofit organization.
For nearly 14 years, Jamie and his team have responded to over 210,000 messages from all around the world. They’ve also created a FIND HELP Tool on their website. The tool helps people locate free or reduced cost counseling and other mental health resources in their community. The organization’s impact on those who’ve been struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide has been profound. In 2015, Jamie published his book "If You Feel Too Much: Thoughts on Things Found and Lost and Hoped For" and today continues to work at the helm of To Write Love on Her Arms.

Living with Self-Kindness and Love for the Planet with AmyAnn Cadwell

When AmyAnn was in graduate school, she developed a deep concern for her choices after seeing the documentary “The True Cost” — choices that ultimately impact other people, and the planet. This led her to starting her own company: The Good Trade.
Founded in Los Angeles in late 2014, The Good Trade is a leading resource and community for sustainability, slow living, and self-love. Through their content, The Good Trade aims to inspire readers who seek to better care for themselves, their communities, and the planet.

Scaling Generosity on Giving Tuesday with Asha Curran
When Asha Curran first heard of the idea for GivingTuesday from her colleague Henry Timms, she did not foresee how one day of giving could turn into a global movement. She was then working at 92nd Street Y, a nonprofit community and cultural center located in Manhattan, New York.
Throughout her career, Asha helped push what’s possible: How do you innovate for nonprofits? What does community mean in an age where there are no boundaries? In this episode, we’re sharing the story of social good innovator and CEO of GivingTuesday, Asha Curran.
Before taking GivingTuesday into the next stage of evolution, Asha helped propel successful programs at 92nd Street Y such as the Social Good Summit, an annual event for tech and global development leaders, in partnership with the UN Foundation and Mashable. But one particular experiment led Asha to where she is today: #GivingTuesday, a day when people would give back to causes and issues that matter to them. Last year, over 400 million dollars were donated online in just 24 hours of Giving Tuesday. The movement is now celebrated in over 60 countries. GivingTuesday has radically changed how people think about generosity, and showed the power of communities everywhere to create change.

Being Generous and Using Your Platform for Good with Ben Higgins
When Ben Higgins joined The Bachelor for its 20th season, his life was never the same. But what a lot of people may not know about Ben is that he works tirelessly to turn the spotlight on someone else. In November 2016, Ben co-founded Generous International, a for purpose business that exists to make the world better — providing the consumer a unique opportunity to impact someone's life through their purchase. From coffee to apparel, Generous International’s mission is to create a movement of generosity and to funnel profits of every product sold towards efforts focused on alleviating poverty and bringing hope to the world.
There’s one conversation Ben had with a friend that he holds on to to this day: " ‘There's nobody that's meant to be famous, not one.’ He goes, 'It’s what you do with the fame that matters.’ That moment I realized that there was some really great things, there were some world changing things that we could do with the platform that I had been gifted.“

Turning Air Pollution Into Art with Anirudh Sharma
Every year, more than 4 million people die from direct and indirect exposure to air pollution. Think about that for a second. The very thing that keeps us alive is also the one that’s killing us. Even with problems that seem unsolveable, there are incredible people working day and night to find solutions — like Anirudh Sharma, cofounder and president of Graviky Labs and the chronic inventor behind AIR-INK. Before AIR-INK, Anirudh built Lechal, a vibrating shoe that aimed to help the visually-impaired navigate their worlds better. With Anirudh’s passion to use technology as a tool for good, AIR-INK, the first ink made entirely out of air pollution, was created.
At Graviky Labs where AIR-INK is processed, air pollution is recycled and turned into hydrated, industrial-grade pigments and inks. Graviky Labs’ technology can be used to capture carbon pollution from the exhaust of generators and small chimney stacks. With AIR-INK, pollutants which could have been in the lungs of millions of people, or mixed into our water and land streams are now beautifully resting on murals and paintings.
In the 2019 MIT Solve Challenge, AIR-INK was selected as one of 32 Solver teams out of 1400 applicants from over 100 countries. MIT Solve is an initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which advances lasting solutions from tech entrepreneurs to address the world's most pressing problems.

Promoting Diversity in Children's Books with Marley Dias
WORLD KINDNESS DAY SPECIAL: In 5th grade, Marley Dias felt dissatisfied with the books her school had to offer, particularly the lack of diversity in the stories she was reading. “I never saw black girls as the main characters,” says Marley. At age 10, with the help of her mom, grassroots activist Dr. Janice Dias, Marley turned her frustration into action. In November 2015, #1000BlackGirlBooks was born — a campaign that aims to collect and donate books with black, female protagonists. Due to her relentless attitude and after earning well-deserved media coverage on the biggest platforms, including the Ellen Show, Marley far exceeded her initial goal.
Apart from promoting diversity in children’s literature, Marley has reached milestones beyond her years. She earned the title editor for a section on online magazine ELLE.com called Marley Mag, and wrote her own book ‘Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You!”

Helping the Blind and Low Vision Community with Anirudh Koel
What if there’s a thing you absolutely enjoy that you think: ‘This would be infinitely better if I shared it with another person.’ What if that one thing were your sight — literally the fact that you can see and enjoy everything around you with clarity and without obstruction. It’s something you probably take for granted, but others could only dream of.
In this episode, you’ll hear the story of Anirudh Koul, former Head of Artificial Intelligence and Research at AIRA (Artificial Intelligence Remote Assistance ). Anirudh is a prolific innovator who’s worked for tech behemoths like Yahoo and Microsoft. After six years at Microsoft, he joined Aira, a mobile app that connects the blind and low vision community to highly trained, remotely-located agents to enhance their everyday experiences. The service empowers users, who depend on others to perform daily tasks. Time Magazine named Aira one the Best Inventions of 2018. The startup was also selected as a Solver in the recently concluded 2019 Community-Driven Innovation Challenge at MIT Solve, an initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
This year, Aira is committed to hiring 100 military spouses as agents who can work remotely from home, while impacting the lives of Aira users.
