Breaking Generational Cycles and Beliefs
Like many of us Justin didn't think he had a problem with drinking, he thought it was his solution. He grew up in a home with two emotionally dysfunctional parents and had deep rooted beliefs that he was worthless and nobody cared about him.
Ultimately this led to Justin becoming an alcoholic and looking for acceptance in the pants of any woman he could.

Did you know that in some countries alcoholics and addicts are taken against there will locked up an even beaten?
Being an alcoholic in India is an embarrassment to the family with their alcoholism being played down and the sufferer who may even want help is often enabled to continue drinking.
Santy shares his recovery story with us and what alcoholism and addiction looks like in India. He describes how the two biggest problem are alcohol and marijuana. Santy celebrated three years of sobriety in August 2021 and despite some drastic loss of his own he is doing incredible things to help our fellows that want to get clean and sober.

Everybody has a why when they quit drinking! When Jeff's drinking had gone way too far and his own daughter blocked him from calling her something had to change. His multiple attempts in different rehab centers had become just a place to get some rest and figure out how to hide his addiction better.
Jeff is now celebrating five years sober and is the C.E.O of the Lifeguard app which was an idea born in rehab and is currently saving lives from accidental overdose. At the time of this recording 41 lives in Canada have been saved!
Did you know that most of those deaths, 96% are accidental?
That’s why Lifeguard Digital Health created the ground-breaking overdose prevention App, connecting people to emergency and mental health support, and helping to prevent accidental deaths from drug toxicity.

If you are an old timer in recovery, a newcomer, sober curious or a loved one of someone who struggles with alcoholism, addiction or mental health issues this show is for you.
May is Mental Health Month and in this episode Dora shares her experience with anxiety and depression and how it relates to many alcoholics and addicts' histories. She shares how hindsight is 20/20 and how she used to need a drink at a certain point every day to take the edge off and how it wasn’t until starting her journey in sobriety that she understood and realized that alcohol is a depressant.
She talks about the fact that addiction and alcoholism are but symptoms of underlying causes and conditions and those underlying causes and conditions are often mental health issues.
Dora also shares 10 signs and symptoms to be aware of that may indicate an issue with Mental Health and how being open and honest with your Doctor about your recovery is the best way to safeguard your sobriety and not ending up with habit forming or addictive prescriptions.
Depression, anxiety, PTSD and other trauma related scenarios are just some of the issues we deal with and even self medicate over. Let's break down these stigmas together by talking about these things without shame or guilt.

Addictive Personalities
ep -55 with Doctor Jennifer Shaw in San Diego, California
This episode is packed full of good stuff and some new topics we haven't discussed on this show yet. Doctor Jenn has always had that all or nothing attitude which is often the case with those of us with addictive personalities.
Joining us from San Diego, Jennifer is a doctor with a background in physical therapy and after finishing seven years of schooling and just three weeks into her dream job she was hit by a car while on her bicycle. Dr. Jenn was instantly disabled at the young age of 24 and had a long road of recovery ahead of her.
At one point she was taking 30 prescribed pills a day to cope with the chronic pain, nerve damage etc. Her Doctors told her she would be dependent on these meds for the rest of her life but Jen had different ideas. She was challenged by someone she trusted to go for six months without drinking or getting involved in a relationship to find true healing for herself.
This was the start in Jennifer's journey of living a clean and sober life and she openly shares her story with us.
We also discuss being in a relationship with a narcissist and how to identify these types of people.
Doctor Jennifer Shaw also has her own podcast titled Natural Wellness Tips be sure to check it out and follow her on Instagram.

Recovering In Paradise
ep -53 with John Martin in Puerto Vallarta Mexico
Welcome to the Soberoso podcast where we invite guests and listeners from around the world to join us in "Sharing Our Passion For Recovery".
John and his beautiful wife Nancy made the move from Canada to Mexico just a couple of years ago and are now living the dream life in Puerto Vallarta where they recently opened a men's substance abuse treatment center, but life wasn’t always so good for John.
In this episode John tells us how he tried many times to get sober doing things his way, Johns way, until the last time more than 20 years ago when he finally found the solution to ending his drinking and drugging.
He tells us of what things were like for him growing up in a home where addiction and alcoholism was the norm. He swore that he would never become like his mother.
That all went out the window around the age of 19 when he started drinking which quickly led to drugging and John realized immediately that he had an addictive personality and it was going to be a problem. Soon after his intro to booze and drugs he began living a double life, married with kids and living a life of lies.
John shares with us how he crossed a line and no longer cared about the consequences he would face for the decisions he made as the addiction grew stronger. His then wife gave him an ultimatum and stated that if he relapsed again their marriage would be over and John walked out of the house and into addiction with no one looking over his shoulder.
He ended up losing his best friend and has buried another 40 - 50 people to addiction. He was so numbed out on drugs that he had no feelings.
Today he has rekindled his relationships with his children, his ex wife and was able to be there for his own mom as she was passing away as a sober woman later on in life. The gifts came back with sobriety.
When John got clean and sober for the last time more than twenty years ago he promised that when he was done with the 12 steps that he would then do them with someone else and since then he has helped hundreds of people go through the big book and live a life in recovery.
If you would like to know more about John and the incredible things he is involved in or the 90 day recovery program please check out their website at www.recoveryinparadisepv.com and if you find yourself in Puerto Vallarta please join them for their Sunday night English speaking meeting. Coming up on two years of clean and sober time Christopher has been reflecting on his recovery with gratitude and appreciation for his new life and breaking free from the chains of addiction.
He tells us how it took years for him to get really good at drinking and eventually he did get really good at it. Christopher was drawn to getting away with his drinking which led to him driving around the block to finish his drinks before going to work, his wife finding empties in the car and drinking the day away on and off the job.
On his way to the hospital via ambulance kicking and screaming that his life was now over the EMT said something he remembers to this day
“Maybe, your life as you knew it is over…. And maybe that's ok.”
We discuss the Hollywood rock bottom and how it really isn't necessary to drive your life into the ditch. You can choose your turning point in life at any time. Christopher shares how “Alcoholism can be a symptom of an underlying issue, and for me, my underlying issue, my illness was my depression and my anxiety”.

Diagnosed with Parkinson's at the young age of 30 Martin began to drink and drug even more heavily than he had been doing up to this point. He was determined to continue partying what he thought were his numbered days until
Martin takes us back to October 28th 2015 when he came out of a blackout in his truck flipped upside down on a country road in the ditch. He laid there in his underwear behind the steering wheel as he heard the sirens heading his way.
