Social Yet Distanced: A View with an Emotionalorphan and Friends
By Jack Varnell
A cross blend of neuroses combining poetry, art, politics, and real-life tales of an emotionalorphan, and oh-so-controversial topics. Sharing news and discussions on Lit, Poetry, the world around us, and the efficacy of manners.
Our primary purpose is to bring the world of poetry and literature with other forms of art to share the work, the history and to inspire those in the audience to investigate the power of survival and healing through the arts.

Culture Matters: Deleted Scenes. Kevin McCann and Dr. Fran Lock
Culture Matters: Deleted Scenes. Kevin McCann and Dr. Fran Lock
Culture Matters are proud to introduce the first in their new series of digital poetry pamphlets, Deleted Scenes by Kevin Patrick McCann, with a virtual launch and author Q&A.
An unsettling poetic riff on the 1963 film The Haunting, and the book that inspired it, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, McCann’s poems traffic in the uncanny and the unsaid, merging moments from across the house’s long and morbid history into a single, though unstable, present. Just as Jackson’s novel is a story of frustrated passions and repressed pain, McCann’s poems also deal in the missing, the buried, the deliberately obscured. Join us online for an evening of haunting - in every sense - poetry and a compelling discussion of all things spectral.
The event will feature readings from Kevin Patrick McCann + special guest (TBC), with a lively Q&A with editor, Fran Lock.
We hope to see you there!

Paul Corman-Roberts has helped it launch. This is rooted in a ten-year discussion with Fran Lock, the Dr, and her trusty steed pooch Stanley Parker-Lock. I--his is about the education systems as students, as teacher, and how you have adapted and what’s the future look like. We are attempting to do fb and zoom and this is one of two planned covering the education systems. If you are a teacher, of any kind, tell us more… message me . Round 2 will have teachers from England, Ireland, Iran and other places I’ve heard of…

Jane Burn, poet and artist Pamphlets include: Fat Around the Middle (Talking Pen, 2015) Tongues of Fire (BLERoom, 2016). Her collections of mention are more to it than bubbles (Indigo Dreams, 2016), This Game of Strangers (Wyrd Harvest Press, 2017, co-written with Bob Beagrie), One of These Dead Places (Culture Matters, 2017), Fleet, (Wyrd Harvest Press, 2018), Remnants (Knives Forks and Spoons Press, 2019, again written with Bob Beagrie), Yan, Tan, Tether (Indigo Dreams Press, 2020). Her poems have been nominated for the Forward and Pushcart prize, and she has placed in a number of poetry competitions. She is a fellow Associate Editor at Culture Matters, with our own Dr. Fran Lock, where they worked together on Witches, Warriors, Workers, an anthology of contemporary women's poetry. Jane lives an eco-friendly lifestyle in a wooden cottage in Northumberland. Many of her poems are about her adoration of language and how it connects her to the many passions and parts of her life. She is working-class, a wife, a mother, bisexual, a poet, an artist and a maker. She is also late-diagnosed autistic, and this diagnosis she says has helped everything finally make sense. She is currently doing an MA in Writing Poetry at Newcastle University. And her next collection, Be Feared, is due out in November from Nine Arches Press. She also plays a rather fabulous ukulele.

Here’s What People Are Saying:
KR’s imagery is of a mystic enveloping a cauldron whose image is that of a hand we wish to see, stirring behind our backs. You will face it! This word work is for those confronting countless evictions from the magic of self-worth, a systemic predilection the moon itself can’t resist.
—Tureeda Mikell, Story Medicine Woman
Synchronicity, The Oracle of Sun Medicine
This striking collection is fueled by a distinct and feminine voice and is alive with lush and shimmering imagery, full of magic, blood, and grace.
—William Taylor, Jr.
Pretty Things To Say
K.R. Morrison is a gifted witch poet who weaves tales of reclamation. Her poems make me dizzy with literary pleasure.

The descriptors can be many for one who defies description.
We have known Razor for a long while.
Short minutes it seems, and if you know him, you know that any discussion is prone to lean a long way around to where it should be, but always pointing at the right side of things because it is the Way.
If you don't know him, this book will make it really easy.

So we split it up instead, Smaller bites pre-digested so you don't have to. Just enjoy the ride. Wait for the sequels. It's just like real life. Or Star Trek Movies ...

Social Yet Distanced: Showdown At The Am I OK Corral or How To Be an All Around Cowboy
Social Yet Distanced: Showdown At The Am I OK Corral or How To Be an All Around Cowboy
Social Yet Distanced: Showdown At The Am I OK Corral or How To Be an All Around Cowboy
Social yet Distanced and Ozark Poet Scot Young came together to discuss his new release "All Around Cowboy."
Historically the cowboy mystique has centered around fatherhood, community and giving back to the common good. Just because. Scot Young talks with us from the role of a modern renaissance man, the post-modern cowboy , making the mystique real. He speaks from his experiences growing up, the different times, bar fights, pro wrestlers and a stellar career as educator, and mentor who bleeds it all out in poems.
The Poets Approve:
“Scot Young may not want to hear this, but he isn’t a cowboy, not in the movie poster sense anyway. This book, his first, is the history of the man he’s become, stronger than his heroes Richard Brautigan and Charles Bukowski, educating young people, publishing countless others without thought given to personal reward, often helping them when they’re not in a position to help themselves, opening his heart and sharing a great love of literature, Scot Young is a great poet, but anyone can do that, he’s an even greater man, so I take it back, maybe he is a cowboy, but let’s be clear, John Wayne would never have the balls to be Scot Young.”
-John Dorsey, Author of The Prettiest Girl at the Dance
“When archeology digs up a book of poetry from this changing planet, it will reveal a bit of “Herodotus Americana” as Scot Young’s good cowboy rides into the sunset of the greatest generation and plays the last number on the jukebox. Like the songs, the poems of tragedy and joys, from miniskirts to baseball, grows up and glows up in the middle of the country’s golden era of post war years from the 50’s to 70’s. This all around cowboy knew the greats, from “Butterfly” to “Buk” while metaphorically herding the storm clouds out of the sky. Tragic, rough & rowdy, hip and cool, delicate for the heart and head, his poems, like Robinson, hits the balls and touches all bases, a book I surely dig and so will you, with “Hey good lookin’” on the cover times two. Plus, one can learn his great definition of poetry and discover the worst insult in Western idiom.”
-Charles Plymell, author of Apocalypse Rose, The Last of the Moccasins
“A beautiful, touching and often insightful journey that hits its mark, Scot Young’s All Around Cowboyis a country rock rodeo get down. A place suspended in time where Mickey Mantle meets Jack Kerouac on the cosmic baseball diamond with Hendrix on guitar and a lonesome Whippoorwill calling the play by play in the voice of Hank Williams singing my jukebox’s got a hole in it. A down to earth collection of first love, brotherly love and true love straight from the heart, these poems are life and death lessons swimming in a swirling beer while sitting in an old school bar called father’s office somewhere in the land of sky blue waters.”

Social Yet Distanced: Paul Corman Roberts Talks Bone Moon Palace, and Poetics with Dr. Fran Lock and an @emotionalorphan
Paul Corman Roberts Talks Bone Moon Palace, and Poetics with Dr. Fran Lock and an @emotionalorphan.
"Paul Corman-Roberts 2nd full-length collection of Bone Moon Palace will be released by Nomadic Press July 3rd of 2021. Previous collections include The Abomunauts Are Coming To Piss On Your Lawn (Howling Dog Press, 2006), Neocom(muter)(Tainted Coffee Press, 2009), 19th Street Station (Full of Crow Chap Series, 2011) and We Shoot Typewriters (Nomadic Press, 2015.) His short story “The Deathbed Confession of Christopher Walken” shortlisted for subTerrain Magazine’s 2010 fiction contest. A three-time Pushcart and Best of Web nominee, he currently teaches workshops for the Older Writer’s Lab in conjunction with the San Francisco Public Library as well as the San Francisco Creative Writing Institute. He sometimes fills in as drummer for the U.S. Ghostal Service."
Bone Moon Palace, like the ghost ship that its title poem commemorates, offers escape "not from everyone else but from everywhere else, a hiding place to be alone in sometimes." In these poems, you'll find community and solitude, candor and empathy, history and etymology. You'll find our oligarchy decoded; our mammalian nature disrobed. You'll find cold full moonlit nights and Darth Vader unsheathing his box cutters and so many beautifully-turned phrases: words tilled like soil to harvest a fresh poetic perspective. Enter the palace and behold, then, Corman-Roberts veering nimbly between jester and sage—dispensing "truth like smoke / disguised as tomfoolery."
Soma Mei-Sheng Frazier, 2017 San Francisco Library Laureate, author of Salve and Collateral Damage: A Triptych
Paul Corman-Roberts’ imagination is a responsible spirit leading people to their sharpened teeth. His imagination is my friend.
Riffs to live by wreathe poem after poem. Stowaway poems in this time of epochal shifts in the direction and velocity of social freight. You can find Corman-Roberts underneath cracking thousands of wishbones with all phantoms and phenomena that hegemony would have you ignore. Here is a tally for lovers of poems to enjoy.
Tongo Eisen-Martin, 8th San Francisco Poet Laureate, author of Heaven Is All Goodbyes and somebody is dead already
Paul Corman-Roberts’ words create a lush, lyrical roadmap to navigate a world where one can feel lost in a sideways sanity. With heart, hope, and humor as his magnetic north, Corman-Roberts leads us along roads teeming with ghosts, shape-shifters, poisonous CEOs, and investment bankers. Rather than imposing upon us a “one-way ticket to the abyss,” replete with Eden-less days where memes are the new media and democracy is pummeled by “thugocracy,” Corman-Roberts offers us a proverbial light at the end of our journey—that poetry can offer sanctuary, and that even amidst a crumbling empire, we “still need to be held / need to be cuddled / even in the squalor of our own dust.
Rich Ferguson, L.A. spoken-word performer, Beat Poet Laureate of California (2020–2022) and author of Everything is Radiant Between the Hates (Moon Tide Press, 2021)

Social Yet Distanced: The Gospel Of the Blue Collar From A Working Class Punk Hostage. Ladies and Gents, Dan Denton
Social Yet Distanced: The Gospel Of the Blue Collar From A Working Class Punk Hostage. Ladies and Gents, Dan Denton
Dan Denton, who incidentally knows nothing about that pesky Hoffa thing, at 13, read an original ode to Jesus at an evangelical church camp in Alabama.
The Christians loved it so much that an elderly minister felt called by God to anoint young Denton as a consecrated vessel to do God’s work for the rest of his life.
Denton became an atheist, and frequented underground punk shows, stole books from libraries. living a gutter drunk life in his early 20’s.
However, reading back alley poems to the homeless is God’s work
Still leaves room for being a consecrated vessel...
His writing has been published online, in print journals, multiple newspapers, and anthologies.
He has two previous chapbooks;
Bury My Heart in the Gutter (EMP Press, 2018)
and Give Us This Day Our Daily Grind: an Ode to the American Factory Worker (Lunch Bucket Brigade, 2020.)
He has read his poetry in support of 100k poets for change in multiple states and has read at underground
poetry festivals with some of America’s best outlaw poets.
Dan sums it all up best...
I hope they put this on my tombstone: “Dan Denton gave his life to poetry and American labor.”

Social Yet Distanced: Sgt. Pepper Did Not Have to Be Lonely, Or How I Learned To Love The Smell Of Wet Poet
Fran Lock has a wonderful virtual sit-down with Alan Humm, founder and editor of One Hand Clapping, a free online magazine that attempts to help new, under-represented and unpublished authors, as well as artists, musicians and composers, by featuring them in the same pages as those who are more established.
Alan is a writer and a teacher of English who has just completed his first collection, the intriguingly titled: A Brief and Biased History of Love.
He is also the editor and founder of One Hand Clapping Magazine, which began its online life last year, but which published a single glorious print version three years prior, and we're going to talk about that and about the transition from print to digital a little later on. So far, we have been lucky enough to feature work by Ali Smith, Les Murray, Hilary Mantel, Lydia Davis, Mark Doty, Colm Toibin, Paul Muldoon, John Burnside, Gillian Clarke, David Harsent, Martin Parr, and many others alongside our less-well-known contributors. They've managed to build a readership to be proud of.

Patrick Davidson Roberts and Poetry Dr. Fran Lock, hold an engaging and insightful discussion on the current state of poetry. Clues may be found in Patrick's work including his release "The Mains". Fran and Patrick go hunting...

Social Yet Distanced: John Dorsey, Poetry, The Prettiest Girls, Publishing and Pimps. An hour with Fran Lock and an EmotionalOrphan
This week we are pleased to have spent a little time with accomplished American Poet, John Dorsey for some great poetry, a little discussion on theory and craft, and most importantly, pimping strong in the art game with the best intentions. No, we don't mean exploitation, we mean selling books via dive bars or the internet. The conclusion is that suitcases work best for international book sales. You MUST be hands on.
We do include an abundance of John's work and all the details on how to hear or buy more books.
As usual Fran Lock, my bestie, and a force of poetry does a most excellent job of talking about real poetics while making me look like I
know what I am doing, and to drop the names of important or cool names I know. Just like magic.
We highlight some work from John's currently available titles: "The Prettiest Girl At The Dance", "Which Way To The River" and The "Profits of POETIC Dishcord" release compilation, "The Ghosts of Their Words Will Be Heroes In Hell"... and many more you probably can't have or find for sale...
All joking aside, this one is special. It is longer than usual. We are proud of this one. Please like, share and subscribe. Consider supporting our work via the "Support Tab" on our Anchor.FM Homepage., via our emotionalorphan store on Redbubble, or Library of digital from Gumroad.
As usual, for questions, links, to read a poem for a show, to get in touch with John about subscriptions, whatever, use the "Message Tab" on Anchor.Fm/emotionalorphan Remember 60 seconds, include email and name.
Peace and Read More. You'll wear it well.

Social Yet Distanced: Poetry, and an Intro to the Social Yet Distanced
Social Yet Distanced: Poetry, and an Intro to the Social Yet Distanced
The Social Yet Distanced is an Arts Collective. Our focus is on small press, small business, and all things art. Our platform is designed to carry us outside the norms many artists default to in the promotion of their work and the evangelism of art. We often find ourselves siloed into less than productive but established systems for furthering of the mission. As an example, many of my writer friends write books then promote them only to other writers who are also writing books they are promoting to other writers. Meanwhile, there is a probability the rest of the reading world has no idea that writer exists. We aim to break that mold.
