EP 211: Authenticy & Simplicity wins
Mary Janet McDonald rose to popularity in 2020 when she started a Facebook live in her kitchen while she baked. It became a weekly show to keep people company in lockdown. She has grown in popularity and success and is now author of two cookbooks called Tunes and Wooden Spoons: Recipes from a Cape Breton kitchen and Tunes and Wooden Spoons: Love without Measure is such a wonderfully humble and authentic person. It's no wonder she is a success. She connects easily with people. A terrific storyteller. She oozes warmth and authenticity.

Bio of Mary Janet MacDonald:
I'm Mary Janet MacDonald. Born and raised in Mabou, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. I was raised by my grandaunt after my mother passed away at 37 from cervical cancer - my father kept the 3 oldest children as they were in school and the two youngest - stayed in the same community of Mabou - but because we were pre-schoolers (I was 3 and my brother 2), our father couldn't afford care in those days - so we ended up staying at those homes while still in school. I believe this shaped me into who I am today.
In that home, I was exposed to so much music and laughter - steeped in the Gaelic traditions (like story telling, stepdancing, but sadly not the language although I do understand some of it). One of my "sisters" in that family is Minnie MacMaster (Natalie MacMaster's Mom). We chat every day. She was the one who taught me stepdancing and we danced our first concert together in Mabou when I was 4 years old. I taught stepdancing for more than 30 years and travelled around the world teaching this Cape Breton tradition.
I am a mother to 7 children and a grandmother to 12. My husband Cecil and I will be married 52 years this fall. We live in Port Hood, Cape Breton since we married. Because of the pandemic, I began the cooking show as a one-off but finding the need out there that people needed 'company' - at least once a week - I decided to keep on going and did this for the past 3 years. Since January 2023 - I've reduced the shows to once a month (or maybe 2) just to keep it going. It's grown to quite a few followers.

EP 194: How to Release Trapped Negative Emotions
Michael is such a fun guest. In episode 183, he delighted us with how to apply the Law of Attraction to our lives to get what we want. I knew I had to have him back. Today he shares about being a Certified Emotion Code Practitioner.
--
If you have physical or nagging emotional pain, you will find this episode very fascinating. Michael Losier is a Certified Emotion Code Practitioner, who helps people eliminate their pain. His practice is based on the work of Dr. Bradley Nelson who authored Emotion Code. Pain is trapped emotion or energy and through muscle testing, Michael connects to the energy of others to help them identify and delete trapped emotions which eliminates the pain or deletes what is holding them back.
--
In this episode, he explains emotion code and the work he does. And he tells lots of interesting and funny stories too. This is also a special episode because we have 2 volunteers on the show who Michael helps live: one with an emotional issue and one with a physical issue. This is definitely a woo-woo episode, but oh so fascinating.

About Stephanie Turner:
--
Stephanie has over 30 years of business development experience working in Atlantic Canada. Although she’s worked in a variety of sectors including oil and gas, telecommunications and community economic development, nearly half of her career has been in brokering commercial real estate deals in the Greater Saint John area. In that time she has gained intimate knowledge of the local commercial real estate market. Stephanie specializes in the leasing of vacant office space and assisting tenants in finding their dream workspace. That being said, over the past 15 years, she’s worked with clients on virtually all aspects of buying and selling commercial real estate in addition to the leasing of industrial and retail space. Her approach to marketing her listings using social networking and other mediums has contributed to her success and has been a key element in building her personal brand. Stephanie’s strengths lie in her communications and organization skills. Her professional approach has won her an extensive and loyal client base allowing much of her new business to come from personal referrals. When not brokering commercial real estate deals, you will find Stephanie and her husband Rob cycling the highways and byways of Charlotte County, New Brunswick. She’s also helping bring awareness to Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune disorder which causes patchy baldness.

Co-recipient of the 2009 Theoretical Developments in Social Gerontology Award from the Gerontological Society of America, Bill is founding co-editor of theNarrative Works journal, founding organizer of the Narrative Matters international conferences, and author or co-author of over 70 publications on narrative gerontology and related topics, including eight books. EP 178: Living with a Grieving Heart with Marianne Bette
I love Marianne’s perspective on grief, her attitude toward life and the connectedness that she gets as a physician between mind, body, and spirit. We have a warm conversation today around grieving and there's a lot of life lessons in there too.
--
About Marianne Bette:
--
Dr. Marianne Bette has survived tremendous grief, experiences that helped her when, as a family practitioner, her patients would ask for her help confronting their own difficulties. When Bette was a young doctor, her fiancé died in a small plane accident. Years later, she married and her husband died of lung cancer. In her 40-year career as a family practitioner she counselled mourning patients and their families.
Bette, who describes herself as a "grief warrior," shares her experiences in Living with a Grieving Heart, a how-to book that will comfort and guide all those who have suffered terrific personal loss. She offers stories from her own personal experiences with grief as well as from her career in family medicine, to help those who are grieving learn how to embrace life again while living with a grieving heart.
“I wanted people to get a feeling for the whole process and to give them encouragement,” Bette says. “So many people are grieving now especially because of COVID and drug overdoses. I’m hoping this will help people to carry on and get through. You don’t have to carry that grief around.”
Living with a Grieving Heart, from Emerald Lake Books, is Bette's second book, following Living with a Dead Man, a memoir based on how she and her daughters faced her husband Thom's final year of illness.

EP 171: Find Yourself Through Creativity with Deanne Fitzpatrick
--
About Deanne Fitzpatrick:
--
Deanne Fitzpatrick makes one of a kind hooked rugs out of yarn and wool cloth, following the same tradition as her mother and both her grandmothers. Within a year of beginning to hook rugs, she began to see it as an art form – a method of self-expression – and has successfully pursued solo exhibits in public galleries and the inclusion of her work in major permanent collections. From the very beginning, she saw that this traditional handwork of Atlantic Canadian women had potential as an art form and sought to have it recognized as such.
--
Deanne has written eight books and illustrated one book. Writing is a big part of her practice as an artist and has been an important part of her ability to help revive the craft of rug hooking throughout North America.
--
Her work is a reflection on love and memory, landscape and nature. Deanne uses wool cloth and yarn to hook original designs onto a linen foundation. Each rug is hooked by hand, one loop at a time. Deanne describes her time at the frame as meditative and creative time that lets her steep and grow new ideas for her work. One rug leads to another, just as within each rug one colour leads to another.
--
Deanne has built a 30-year career as an artist and created a strong following for her work. Each week, she writes a newsletter to more than 20,000 followers about art, life and creativity. Sharing her writing in her books, newsletters, and podcast is an important part of her creative process of making hooked rugs.
