GNAT's Shirenomics TV Show (Season #2, Episode #3): Interview with Dr. Joshua Sherman of Old Mill Road Record & Old Mill Road Media
In this episode our hosts Matt Harrington and Jonathan Cooper interview Dr. Joshua Sherman of Arlington, Vermont.
Joshua Sherman is making a significant impact in Southern Vermont through his professional and artistic pursuits. In 2014, Sherman purchased an historic gristmill and two surrounding buildings in East Arlington. The Mill and the evolving campus (recording studio, gallery, farm, artist development program) and many more initiatives is a major contributor to Arlington’s revitalization. Old Mill Road Recording is now a state-of-the-art luxury destination recording studio and has featured in-house GRAMMY ® Winning Engineer Benjamin J. Arrindell. Sherman’s daytime job of being a medical doctor at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center hospital is equally impactful. He is active in theatre including developing a play about life of Norman Rockwell (Perfect Picture) that has been shown at Southern Vermont Arts Center. Sherman is also the owner of Old Mill Road Media which is the publisher of Vermont Magazine, Stratton Magazine, Manchester Life, and the Vermont News Guide.
This episode dives into cultural production v cultural consumption. Our region is already well-known for the opportunities it gives visitors and residents to “consume” culture at playhouses, museums, historic properties, and the like, but how do you direct resources to produce culture. The ramifications here are pretty big: showing up on a different sort of map, and drawing the interest and attention of a different set of professionals (in this case, sound/audio engineering), and perhaps becoming a draw for emerging and established professionals in this and related fields.
We talk with Dr. Sherman about this idea and more on this episode of Shirenomics.

Regional agencies work to retain workforce and promote preventative health care outside the doctor’s office

In Southwestern Vermont, also known as The Shires of Vermont, residents are never too far without a health clinic of some sort, or knowing someone who is employed by the largest growing industry. Without a 24/7 rescue squad, full-service hospital, and numerous specialty clinics, residents of Bennington County wouldn’t have the quality of health that they do. It’s not just the rolling Green Mountains and maple syrup that keep everyone healthy, it’s on-the-ground and in the community prevention work.
