2023 NBA Draft: The Toughest Evaluations with Matt Modderno
With the numbers crunching in Ye Olde Draft Analyzer (YODA for short) nearly complete, Kevin and fellow draft nerd Matt Modderno got together to discuss the prospects giving them the most heartburn during the evaluation and ranking process. The two come at the draft from different perspectives — Kevin through the lens of stats and combine measurements with adjustments for age and level of competition, and Matt through watching loads of college games every season.
We will be joining forces for additional predraft podcasts, as well as a live-streamed show during the draft (along with Osman Baig). This episode focused on players we have questions about or where we differ most from the consensus view, including:
Zach Edey, C, Purdue Olivier-Maxence Prosper, F, Marquette G.G. Jackson II, F, South Carolina Jett Howard, W, Michigan Bilal Coulibaly, W, French LNB Pro A Kris Murray, F, Iowa Brandin Podziemski, G, Santa Clara Rayan Rupert, W, AUS NBLWe'll probably record a similar episode in the days ahead — we both had other guys on our lists to discuss.

On a Wing(er) and a prayer: New team president offers Wizards some hope
When Ron and Kevin last talked, the Washington Wizards had just parted ways with previous team president Tommy Sheppard. Now the Wizards have found Sheppard's replacement — Michael Winger, a 43-year old NBA executive who gained experience with three successful franchises over the past couple decades.
The resume version of his background would highlight the fact that he's been part of executive leadership groups that reached seven conference finals and two NBA finals over the past 13 years. Winger's signature transaction as general manager of the Los Angeles Clippers was the mammoth trade that netted the team Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.
The non-resume version would include the realities that he was part of the executive leadership group that made the Cleveland Cavaliers roster so bloated and expensive that LeBron James decided he couldn't win in his home state and bolted for the Miami Heat. And, Winger was part of choosing Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka over James Harden in Oklahoma City. And, with the Clippers, he oversaw the unwieldy and widely lampooned load management system, and benefited immensely from the unlimited resources provided by Steve Ballmer.
That said, there are a high number of crimes Wizards fans would commit to see the team reach seven conference finals and two NBA finals over the next 13 years. After all, this is a franchise with four series wins (no more than one in any season) over the past 40 years.
We discuss all this and much-much more in this episode.

Sheppard fired. Let's take a look.
Ted Leonsis and the Washington Wizards surprised outsiders by firing team president Tommy Sheppard after missing the playoffs in consecutive seasons and failing to produce even a .500 record in his four years at the helm. In this episode, Kevin and Ron break down the Sheppard era, including best and worst moves, and the biggest reasons the team failed under Sheppard's leadership.

Postmortem: Wizards miss the play-in
In this reason, Kevin and Ron delve into some of the reasons the 2022-23 Washington Wizards failed to achieve their goal of reaching postseason play. They also end up in a discussion of efficiency in basketball and whether Bradley Beal and Delon Wright need to change their diets as they move past 30.

As the Wizards slip-slide to 12th, should they regret anything?
The Washington Wizards are 12th in the Eastern Conference and will likely miss any form of postseason play. Nearing the end of a "win now" season, Washington is on track to have the sixth best odds of landing the top pick in the NBA's draft lottery. They're a game-and-a-half from passing the Orlando Magic for fifth best odds.
What's been going wrong? What will some of the key franchise figures — and fans — regret from the 2022-23 season?
In this episode we discuss:
Monte Morris Deni Avdija Kyle Kuzma Bradley Beal Specialists vs. two-way players Chris Miller, Drew Gooden and NBA broadcasts, and much much more.Key question: Is Kevin a traitor to the Wizards tribe for watching the opposing team's broadcast?

Trade Deadline Interviews: Say less Tommy. Way less.
Washington Wizards president Tommy Sheppard gave interviews that were filled with nonsense, non sequiturs and incoherence. Kudos to Craig Hoffman for asking serious questions, by the way. In this episode, Kevin and Ron delve into five of the most absurd comments, and go on an array of tangents that come when people talk hoops, including the value of floaters, whether Kyle Kuzma has actually improved, what Deni Avdija is doing well the past eight games and what he needs to do to keep it going.
The Sheppard absurdities:
There hasn't been enough time to evaluate Bradley Beal, Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma. The team just needs to stay healthy. "Not a fan of Kyle?" Defending his draft record by noting that Avdija, Rui Hachimura and Corey Kispert are "rotation guys" The team needs a backup forward. They traded Hachimura to open opportunities for Avdija.
What does the Hachimura trade mean for the Wizards?
The Washington Wizards made the kind of trade that’s become familiar, sending former first round pick Rui Hachimura to the Los Angeles Lakers for Kendrick Nunn and three second-round picks — two of which convey in 2028 and 2029. In this episode, Kevin and Ron analyze the trade for all involved, discuss what it means for the Wizards, and take a look at the schedule ahead.
And they get into a conversation about which player jerseys they'd be willing to buy/wear.

Tearing it down vs. building from the middle — what's the right strategy for NBA teams? With OKC Dream Team's Jon Hamm
In this episode, OKC Dream Team podcaster and long-time Oklahoma City Thunder expert Jon Hamm joins Kevin and Ron to talk team building, how teams communicate with their fans, the importance of ownership and the relative progress of OKC and the Washington Wizards in their respective rebuilds/reloads.
As is usually the case on the #SoWizards podcast, the conversation goes in an array of directions, including a moment when Ron gets his mind blown when he learns the Bullets once drafted a player who was blind in one eye.
If there's such thing as a classic episode of the #SoWizards podcast, this is one of them.

Should the Wizards steer into the skid? Plus a 2020 redraft
The Wizards are on a seven-game losing streak, they've lost 10 of their last 11, and the schedule ahead is challenging. In this episode, Bleav In Wizards podcast host Matt Modderno joins us to discuss the relative merits of current Wizards players, whether the losing binge is actually a good thing for the franchise — and whether it should continue — and how to divvy up responsibility for the team's futility between owner Ted Leonsis, team president Tommy Sheppard and head coach Wes Unseld Jr.
Following up on the 2019 Rui Hachimura redraft Matt and Kevin did on Matt's podcast, we redid the first 15 picks of the 2020 Deni Avdija draft. Here's who we picked:
Anthony Edwards Tyrese Haliburton LaMelo Ball Desmond Bane Devin Vassell Tyrese Maxey Onyeka Okongwu Immanuel Quickley Jaden McDaniels Isaiah Stewart Saddiq Bey Kenyon Martin Jr. Obi Toppin Xavier Tillman Sr. Precious AchiuwaWe agreed that if the draft were rerun the same way it went in 2020, the obvious pick for the Wizards would have been Haliburton. We discussed who the Wizards might have taken if both Avdija and Haliburton were out of the equation, as well as where Avdija might get picked in a full redraft.

#SoWizards scheme, coaching, talent, front office and ownership with Kevin Folli
Kevin Folli is the man behind Wizards Film Room on Twitter (follow him @KevinFolliNBA) where he provides insights, analysis and data with illustrative video.
In this episode, we discuss offensive and defensive scheme, Wes Unseld Jr. strengths and weaknesses, whether the Wizards have the talent to achieve even their modest goals, and what Tommy Sheppard has done since taking over as team president. This leads back franchise goals set by Ted Leonsis.
There are a few digressions along the way, including a brief conversation of the best possible All-NBA style all defense/no offense lineup.
Please forgive the false ending. We just had more to say.

Are Wizards fans really just masochists? With Ken Budd of The Atlantic
Ken Budd writes for an array of outlets, including Washington Post Magazine and The Atlantic. Writing for The Atlantic, Budd delved into why such thing as Wizards fans exist — complete with interviews of psychologists explaining why otherwise intelligent, accomplished people can't stop rooting for perennial losers. We took some trips to fond memories of the past and pondered whether we're all just a bunch of masochists.
We also discussed the 3-2 Wizards, fresh off an embarrassing nationally broadcasted loss to the Indiana Pacers, and whether we've seen anything over the first five games to change our expectations for the team this year.

#SoWizards Forecast: How good will the Wizards be in 2022-23?
With guest basketball expert Mark Schindler joining the discussion, we went deep on the Washington Wizards and their prospects for the 2022-23 season. We touched on key questions like:
What's the state of the roster and the franchise? Who will be the team's most impactful player? Which of the youngsters has the best chance of making The Leap? Where do the Wizards rank in the Eastern Conference? We also made predictions about the team's final record and where they'll ultimately finish.
Click here for Kevin's full stat-driven forecasts, which includes the team's expected 10-man rotation.

Wizards Fanalysis: Preseason games plus key questions and position battles
In this episode we analyze the Washington Wizards preseason games against the Golden State Warriors and discuss some of the key questions and position battles for the Wizards, including:
Who starts at guard with Bradley Beal? Who starts at forward with Kyle Kuzma? Who wins the role of backing up Beal? How much (if anything) will Monte Morris and Will Barton lose because they won't be playing with Nikola Jokic?Support the podcast by checking out Athletic Greens, a lifestyle-friendly supplement that provides 75 high-quality vitamins, minerals, whole-food sourced superfoods, probiotics and adaptogens -- with less than 1 gram of sugar. Does Mid + MAGA equal a top four team in the East?
In this episode, Ron and Kevin talk about the Sarver Report, what to call the Wizards' current "Big Three" (hint: the Wizards don't have a Big Three), and then go into a hypothetical of how good the Wizards might be if they could acquire Michael Porter Jr. from the Denver Nuggets and Jonathan Isaac from the Orlando Magic.
For those who don't keep up with such things, both Porter and Isaac are known to have conservative political views. They're also both young, talented, injury-prone, and were highly productive when last healthy.

Ron goes to a wedding, so we end up talking about whether bald players are better
Sometimes during a long offseason, you need to throw off the shackles of trivia, nonsense and offseason pickup videos in which *no really* he's *really-really-really* in the best shape of his life and talk about the important things like whether bald players are better, and who are the best bald Wizards/Bullets in franchise history.

Way more than you ever wanted to know about the Washington Wizards 2022 summer league
The Wizards emerged from the 2022 NBA summer league with a 3-2 record, a positive scoring differential, and one of Las Vegas’s three most productive players, and the whole thing was still disappointing. In this episode, Kevin is joined by Matt Modderno, host of the Bleav in Wizards podcast, for an analysis of the summer league experience. We get into positives and negatives, and examine everything from roster construction to what's reasonable to expect from a five-game "season" lasting about 10 days.
Make sure to check out the companion podcast on the Bleav in Wizards stream where Matt and I discuss the types of players the Wizards seem to value. Based on recent draft picks and the Wizards' Summer League additions, it's questionable whether the player archetypes they prioritize are actually all that valuable or effective in today's NBA. Based on that, we discuss how valuable Corey Kispert's skillset actually is and who are his closest statistical comps (aka dopplegangers). You might be surprised to find out whose statistical profile most closely mirrors his so far. We also make the case for why Corey Kispert and Deni Avdija should have played at Summer League.

Ron & Kevin vs. The World (or Bobby Marks, at least)
In this kinda-sorta mailbag episode, Kevin and Ron answer basketball-related questions and end up covering a wide range of topics. The questions:
From ESPN's Bobby Marks: Can a team build around a player like Bradley Beal and Damian Lillard at $50+ million per year without a clear number two in place? From The Aether: Who would you rather have over the next five years, Lu Dort at $87.5 million or Beal at $251 million? This one took several turns and permutations. From email: What does Corey Kispert do that Jordan Schakel doesn't? And, is Schakel at the same overall talent level as Kispert, Rui Hachimura and Deni Avdija? From friend of the podcast (and frequent guest) Matt Modderno: With both Kevin and Ron in their respective primes, who wins one-on-one to 11?Support the podcast by checking out Athletic Greens, a lifestyle-friendly supplement that provides 75 high-quality vitamins, minerals, whole-food sourced superfoods, probiotics and adaptogens -- with less than 1 gram of sugar. Wizards 2022 Offseason: The Summer of Fine
This episode might have had a different flavor, at least at the start, if we'd known all of the preposterous details of the "let's just give him everything we possibly" can contract the Washington Wizards awarded Bradley Beal.
In this episode, Kevin and Ron discuss the Beal contract, and the team's other roster moves so far this offseason. We also delved into the iffy strategy of not taking a swing on high-producing players like Dejounte Murray, an All-NBA level performer, who the Atlanta Hawks acquired for the corpse of Danilo Gallinari and some first-round picks.
We also hit on some of the big deals made by other teams, and closed with a discussion of the contract given to one of Ron's favorite players: Lou Dort.

LIVE Bullets Forever 2022 Mock Draft

NBA Draft Guide: Ranking wing and center prospects likely to be drafted
Matt Modderno teamed up with Kevin for a two-part crossover deep-dive into the 2022 NBA Draft. Part One — covering guards and forwards is Matt's Bleav in Wizards podcast. In Part Two, Kevin and Matt break down wings and centers that have a realistic shot to hear their name called on draft night and the range most reasonable for them to be selected. The two episodes cover more than 70 players...for a 58-player draft. Wings discussed include: Bennedict Mathurin, Kendall Brown, AJ Griffin, Jalen Williams, David Roddy, Dalen Terry, Ochai Agbaji, MarJon Beauchamp, Jake LaRavia, Christian Braun, Keon Ellis, Malaki Branham, Gabriele Procida, Jabari Walker, Tevin Brown, Ousmane Dieng, Shaedon Sharpe, Tevin Brown and Vince Williams. Centers: Chet Holmgren, Mark Williams, Christian Koloko, Jalen Duren, Walker Kessler, Michael Foster Jr., Josh Minott, Trevion Williams, Ismael Kamagate, and Yannick Nzosa.

Player Development and the Washington Wizards
With the NBA Draft looming on the calendar, and the Washington Wizards committed to maximum salary players Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis, the team will need to rely on the cheap labor of young players on rookie contracts. The burning question facing the franchise is one they've answered poorly for the past few decades: Can the team develop its young players into major contributors?
For the Wizards, this issue may be more imperative than it is for other "win now" teams because the max salary players they're paying aren't really among the game's truly elite performers.
In this episode, Kevin and Ron discuss whether whoever the team selects in the draft will even be able to crack the rotation, and whether Wes Unseld Jr. and the team's coaching staff is up to the task of helping young players reach their true potential. They also talk about some draft prospects who might be available when the Wizards pick, including Tari Eason, Dyson Daniels, Bennedict Mathurin, Jeremy Sochan, and David Roddy.

NBA Draft Lottery Leaves the Wizards at 10. Now what?
Recorded shortly after the NBA's annual Draft Lottery, which left the Wizards with the 10th pick (the most likely outcome based on their record this season), Osman Baig from Bullets Forever and Matt Modderno, host of the Bleav in Wizards podcast, joined Kevin to talk about what the Wizards can and should do this offseason.
The trio dissected an array of options, including trading up for a potential star, trading down to take good players who slip, and/or using the pick to acquire proven veterans. They also delved into possible trades involving some of the team's attractive veterans (to other teams), including Kyle Kuzma and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Ghost of Wizards Past...and a discussion of Nikola Jokic with Marcus Atkinson
In this episode, co-hosts Kevin Broom and Ron Oakes-Cunningham were joined by Wizards writer and youth basketball coach Marcus Atkinson. They discussed Ron's theory that fans need time off once their favorite gets eliminated to recalibrate their basketball eye and reset expectations. They also got into a conversation about effective team building, with a focus on the Memphis success assembling a deep and talented roster around Ja Morant. That evolved into some Memory Lane discourse that delved into the monumental organization-wide lack of foresight, poor strategic planning, and inability to provide meaningful support to young players who needed help to grow into the kinds of roles the team wanted them to fill. The episode wrapped with Kevin and Marcus continuing a conversation started on Twitter about Nikola Jokic, whether he's a deserving MVP, and whether a team can make a deep run in the playoffs built around a player like Jokic.

#SoWizards Off-Season Thoughts and Musings
With the Washington Wizards not making the playoffs, Kevin and Ron took some time to reflect on weighty #SoWizards topics like whether Bradley Beal should take less than the maximum salary, which of the Wizards' players seem like they could compete effectively at playoffs intensity, and the relative goodness of Desmond Bane.
They touched on Beal's now-four-season-long drop in three-point shooting, and the likelihood that he's going to be in the expensive decline portion of his career well before his contract extension concludes.
The also discussed who should win NBA MVP this season.

Looking back at Wizards draft picks and who they should have taken 2012-2021 edition
Osman Baig (@OBtoojiveforyou) and Matt Modderno (@MattModderno) are back for another Bullets Forever 3Pt Play! We all know the expression that hindsight is 20-20 so we thought it would be fun to fire up the time machine and rehash each of the Wizards' drafts over the last decade. We discuss what they got right, where they missed, and the flaws in their logic along the way. We identify who would have been better to select, who we liked at the time, and whether the players that fans wanted actually panned out. Plus, Matt tries really hard to defend the Isaiah Todd trade/pick. Let us know what you think and if you want us to go further back and analyze the previous decade.

Washington Wizards 2021-22 Season Post-Mortem with Ben Becker
Kevin Broom and Ben Becker have been having Wizards season post-mortem calls annually for nearly 20 years now. They've even recorded some of them and turned them into podcasts. That's what this is: two long-time friends who know basketball, know the Wizards and know the NBA dissecting Washington's season, and the team's penchant for bad strategic thinking.
There was no outline or framework for the conversation, but they hit on most of the major themes from this past season, and took a look ahead and that team's likely fortunes next season and beyond.
Somewhat surprisingly, there were notes of optimism about next season, primarily because in trading for Kristaps Porzingis, the Wizards have two players on the roster capable of being high-end starters. No, Porzingis and Bradley Beal are not among the game's elite players, but each could fall into a 1- or 2+ designation Kevin wrote about, here.

Do the Wizards have top 10 young talent? And other questions with Armon Lee
Here's the thing that makes a 96-minute podcast episode even crazier: it started with one of us saying he might need to keep his comments tight because he unexpectedly had to be somewhere. Instead of leaving early, the conversation went nearly two hours, and we overcome technical difficulties to record roughly 95 minutes.
Armon Lee, New York Knicks fan and creator of the excellent Quarter-Lee Report podcast, joined us to talk hoop. We expected to talk about the Washington Wizards youngsters, one of Kevin's crackpot theories about how bias and the evolution of basketball help lead teams and fans to misevaluate players, and Armon's perspective on Wizards big man Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis, of course, started his career with the Knicks.
In addition to crackpot theories, they kicked around some research Kevin did attempting to assess the relative quality of each team's young talent.
Along the way, we talked about how to build winning teams, whether NBA teams need to have a goal of winning a championship and much...much...more.
This was a terrific conversation with the three of us disagreeing on an array of topics, and then going deeper to understand what the other person was saying, and then continue to disagree.

Free Rui! The Campaign Starts Here.
Also in this episode, the guys talked about Kyle Kuzma's relative value, what they want to see and expect to see over the team's last 12 games, whether Deni Avdija should play PG in this final stretch, and if shooting struggles could be helped with some Lasik eye surgery.

A Deep Dive on Coaching and Wes Unseld Jr. with Troy Haliburton
#SoWizards hosts Kevin Broom and Ron Oakes-Cunningham have been nibbling at the edges of whether Wes Unseld Jr. is doing a good job as Wizards head coach, and in this episode they were joined by the great Troy Haliburton to take a big ol' bite of the question.
The conversation was an unflinching diagnosis of how Unseld's leadership is coming up short, how he compares to his predecessors and competitors, how the Wizards organization is failing him as a rookie head coach, and what needs to happen for him to succeed.

Talking Unseld, Beal and the Wizards future with Mark Schindler from Basketball News
Is it bad form to say your own podcast has a great episode? If so, I'm the Jamaal Wilkes of podcasting. Here's a YouTube link to his shot (and some other "bad form" shooters) for the youngs in the audience.
In this episode, Mark Schindler, a contributor at Basketball News, joined Ron and Kevin to discuss a whole heap of basketball topics. Mark is an excellent basketball writers and a must read for those who want insight into the NBA. He has a specialty of sorts for the Indiana Pacers, but he covers the entire league with a focus on player development and progression, while also keeping up with college scouting and eyeing the NBA Draft. Give him a follow him on Twitter @MSchindlerNBA.
We hit on an array of topics, including the Pacers, G-League superstar Terry Taylor (the 6-5 "big"), Tyrese Haliburton, and just how big an a-hole is Indy coach Rick Carlisle. We also talked Wizards, including whether Wes Unseld Jr. is doing a good job, the relative merits of the players on the Wizards roster, and whether the team should be so gung ho about giving Bradley Beal a supermax contract.
This is a great episode.

The Wizards at the All-Star break, and what to expect over the last 24 games
With no one from the franchise participating in an official capacity, All-Star weekend was quiet for the Washington Wizards. Kevin and Ron took the time to take stock of the team and what they hope and expect to see from the Wizards over the final 24 games of the season.
This episode includes a discussion of All-Star Saturday Night events, which evolved into a conversation about the league could do with the schedule to make games into more of an event, and create space for some fun and entertaining formats.

BulletsForever 3PT Play: Tanking?! We're talking about tanking!
In the latest installment of the BulletsForever 3PT Play, Matt Modderno and Osman Baig joined Kevin to talk about tanking -- whether the Wizards should do it, and how to do it right if they do.
We also discussed the team's trade deadline moves and what they could mean for the Wizards over the next few seasons.

BulletsForever 3PT Play: The Bealemma
In this episode, Osman Baig joined Kevin Broom and Ron Oakes-Cunningham to talk over the most important figure in the Washington Wizards organization: Bradley Beal.
We discussed how the team's handling of Beal is symptomatic of the front office's long-running dysfunction. We assess where Beal truly stands in the league and the challenges of trying to build around a player at his level. We got prescriptive too, which included a conversation about how the team could build around him, if they persist with their Beal strategy.
And, we got into the team's failure to find quality players -- from the free agency debacle of 2016 to missing on draft picks and veteran pickups.
The tone is on the pessimistic side, which makes sense for a team sitting 10th in the East that's coming off a 29-point loss to the Boston Celtics, a blown 35-point lead against the Los Angeles Clippers, and facing a tough schedule over the next couple weeks. This is a team falling apart, and in this episode we get into some of the big reasons why.

Is Wes Unseld Jr. Doing a Good Job Coaching the Washington Wizards?
Recorded before the debaculous 29-point loss to Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics, Kevin Broom and Ron Oakes-Cunningham batted around the issue of whether Wes Unseld Jr. and his staff are doing a good job. It’s been taken as a given by many Wizards fans and analysts that Unseld is good and a significant upgrade from Scott Brooks.
But what if he’s not?
What if the team isn’t being well coached? How could outsiders tell the difference?
Would we look to the team’s 13-21 record since the 10-3 start? The negative scoring differential? The middle of the pack offense and a bottom tier defense? How about the lack of energy and urgency from a team in the midst of playing every other day during a lengthy home stand?
Give a listen to the podcast, and let us know what you think.

Bradley Beal: Will he stay or will he go? And All-Star stuff.
The plan for this episode was straightforward: Ron and Kevin would spend a few minutes discussing the recent performance of the Washington Wizards and then move into picking All-Star rosters.
What happened: the conversation evolved into a dissection of whether Bradley Beal will stay, when (and if) he'll ask for a trade, and what might motivate him to stay or go.
They also delved into the value of coaching and how good a job Wes Unseld Jr. is doing so far.
And they got to All-Star rosters.
Note: This episode was recorded before Washington's 115-110 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Here's a link to the mid-season checkup article Kevin mentions in the episode.

Bullets Forever 3PT Play: Is Kyle Kuzma for Real?
This is the second installment of the Bullets Forever "3PT Play," the brainchild of Osman Baig, who joined me and Bleav in Wizards podcast host Matt Modderno to analyze the recent outstanding play from Wizards PF Kyle Kuzma. Click here to listen to the first episode, where we talked about "Point Beal" on Matt's show.
Recorded before Washington's 112-106 win over the Orlando Magic, we dug into how Kuzma has played over the last 7-10 games and asked whether it's sustainable or just a hot streak. After all, Kuzma's been consistently average for five-and-a-half seasons. Why is he suddenly producing at a much higher level over the past few weeks?
There's no question he's played much better than he has throughout his career. In Kevin's PPA metric (where average is 100 and higher is better), he's been a mid-90s producer. His best season was last year when he posted a 98 PPA. Over the last 10 games (not including the Orlando game), his PPA was a heady 162. Over the last 7, a dizzying 186.
But, for the season, it was 108.
Give a listen to the discussion, and then join it at Bullets Forever or on social media.
Please let us know if there's a topic you want us to dissect in the next 3PT Play.
Ron Oakes-Cunningham and Kevin will have a new episode this weekend.

Can the Covid-Riddled Wizards Stack Some Wins?
Recorded after the Wizards 124-121 win against the Charlotte Hornets, co-hosts Kevin and Ron discuss how the team has adapted with so many players sidelined by the NBA's Covid health and safety protocols. The current list includes:
Aaron Holiday Montrezl Harrell Rui Hachimura Spencer Dinwiddie Brad Wanamaker Anthony Gill Tremont WatersRaul Neto was cleared Monday but didn't play against the Hornets. He's likely to be on the floor when the team returns to action Wednesday.
Among the topics hit:
Can Bradley Beal play point guard? Does Daniel Gafford need more minutes? Is Kyle Kuzma making a leap or merely on a hot streak? Can the Wizards reach the halfway point of the season above .500?
The Big Picture: What's the Wizards Strategic Direction? With former co-host Ben Becker
In this episode, former #SoWizards co-host Ben Becker joined current hosts Kevin Broom and Ron Oakes-Cunningham for an in-depth discussion of the Washington Wizards strategic direction.
They delved into the role of the front office, the need for ruthlessly evaluating the merits of players, and the folly of treating a player who is not elite as if he is. The basic problem: it creates a ripple effect through the team's decision-making process and the roster.
They talked about whether it's time for the team to adjust its strategy:
Go all-in by packaging draft picks and players to get another All-Star? Trade Bradley Beal for young players and draft assets? Look to package some of their mid-level talent to upgrade at positions of need? They also discussed the cause of Washington's spiraling play after a terrific start. Was it too many fashion segments too soon (Ron's theory)? A failure to focus on details and execution? Or maybe the players just aren't good enough?
For more on the players, check out Kevin's article at Bullets Forever where he discusses the team's need for a talent infusion.

How to Fix the Staggering Wizards with WizTwitter's fastbreconomics
In this episode, co-hosts Kevin Broom and Ron Oakes-Cunningham are joined by one of the best follows on Wizards Twitter, Akbar — better known as @fastbreconomics.
Akbar is deeply knowledgeable of key metrics and advanced analytics and brings illumination to the team's strengths and weaknesses. In this wide-ranging discussion, we dissect what the team has done well, what's gone wrong, and how they can address the challenges they face in both personnel and strategy.
Among the topics analyzed:
Washington's good record with a negative scoring differential The team's roster of "mid" coming back to earth after a strong start, and whether their performance can swing back to the early season levels. Is Bradley Beal a star? Does Wes Unseld Jr.'s offensive philosophy need revision? Is what's wrong with Spencer Dinwiddie a problem with Dinwiddie's on-court performance, or a problem with expectations of the kind of player he'd be?We also touched on the Houston Rockets' improbable winning streak, the outstanding play during that stretch from former Wizards player Garrison Mathews, and whether Kevin Porter Jr. is an NBA-quality player.
We wrapped up with holiday-style wish list of players who could help the Wizards and are realistic trade targets, if Tommy Sheppard decides to make a move.

The Crossover: Talking G League with Bleav in Wizards Host Matt Modderno
With the Wizards staggering, Bleav in Wizards host Matt Modderno and Kevin turned their text message conversations about G League players into an article for Bullets Forever. What's missing from the Wizards offense?
The Washington Wizards are 11-6, but their offense has been trending in a worrisome direction. Kevin and Ron talk about what's going wrong and how the team might address the issues to maintain their winning ways.
They discuss how Spencer Dinwiddie's game has changed in his return to action from last season's knee injury -- fewer drives and free throws, more threes (as a share of his offensive possessions) -- and whether the team is getting enough from him to stay in the top six in the East.
Other topics:
How the change in officiating may be hurting Dinwiddie and Bradley Beal, but helping Deni Avdija Whether or not Ron should watch the movie Fletch, and What the Wizards need to do to incorporate Rui Hachimura, Thomas Bryant and Davis Bertans when they return to action.
Are the 8-3 Wizards actually good?
Recorded during the Wizards comeback win against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kevin and Ron talk about what the Wizards are doing well and what might happen when they run into teams with quality shooting. They talk about the strengths and weaknesses of Rui Hachimura and Deni Avdija, and what each of them need to do to reach their NBA potential.
They delve into position-less basketball, whether Steve Novak should have been a small-ball center, and whether they should just turn the podcast over to Ron's dog.

The Wizards are winning, but there are reasons for fans to worry
In this episode, Kevin and Ron discuss the Wizards going 3-2 since the last episode with two wins over the Boston Celtics, a loss to the Brooklyn Nets, and a split with the Atlanta Hawks. They go even deeper on Kevin's reasons to worry article, and Ron asks a great question: Is the lack of contested shots from the Wizards a feature or a fault in head coach Wes Unseld Jr.'s defensive scheme?
Ron shares his thoughts from attending a couple Wizards games the past week and watching the Washington crowd get outcheered by Boston and Atlanta fans.
Somehow, Kevin misses his opportunity to share his thoughts about this year's drop in shooting efficiency -- maybe it's the ball.

Fearless Forecasts and an Early Check on the 2-0 Washington Wizards
Kevin is joined by new co-host Ron Oakes-Cunningham to analyze this year's Washington Wizards. In this episode, Kevin and Ron discuss their preseason forecasts and whether or not the first two games has them rethinking their predictions. They theorize on the correlation between bald spots and basketball greatness, dive in on the first two games, get nerdy about the Wizards defense, and spend a bunch of time talking about Kyle Kuzma.
Critical question: When the season is over, will Kevin owe Ron a six-pack of Corona or will Ron be buying Kevin a bottle of red?

Kwame Brown
Jared Dudley
Juwan Howard and Chris Webber
Isaac Austin and Ben Wallace
Ian Mahinmi
Isaiah Thomas
Admiral Schofield, and
more. Lots more.
We DO dig into the draft and discuss a bit about how we each approach evaluating prospects. I'm planning to have him on again when the draft is closer. And I'm planning to make sure we stick to the topic.
Apologies for the audio quality. We had the dreaded technical glitch and had to record using an app that was less than optimal. This will be fixed for the next episode.
