Sarah is a graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing and a Master’s degree in Communication Disorders. She has worked in the field of Speech Language Pathology since 2006 and have worn many hats including Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, Speech-Language Technician and Speech-Language Pathologist. Working exclusively in schools has provided her with a great insight into the importance technology plays in the success of an SLP.

I share some ways to address each skill when a client is not exhibiting these skills "yet."

In this session, we discussed important factors and strategies for supporting the socio-emotional well-being of autistic clients. This session explored strategies to implement with young children, as well as, difficulties clinicians may encounter when supporting the socio-emotional wellbeing of older autistic children.

In this episode, I am joined by Cheri Dodge Chin, an assistive technology consultant for a public school district in Portland, Oregon. She has a clinical doctorate in speech-language pathology and 20+ years of experience helping children, educators, and families develop speech & language skills. She began her blog, Super Power Speech, in 2008 with the hope of engaging other speech pathologists and passing on ideas and resources. The blog is now recognized as one of the first SLP blogs in the world and has been nominated for multiple awards. Aside from flying around and trying to save the world, you can find her reading, running, or eating dessert.

In this podcourse, I am joined by Kate McLaughlin, a Speech-Language Pathologist specializing in augmentative communication for children with complex communication needs.  She is passionate about supporting children and families on their journey to autonomous communication. She is a certified member of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and holds licensure as a speech-language pathologist in the state of Connecticut, USA.  Kate is in private practice in Connecticut providing direct therapy and consultative services for individuals with complex communication needs.  Kate is the creator of an online course on AAC called Authentic AAC: Implementing Communication Systems for Autonomy & Connection.

We identified 2 universal requirements for all emergent AAC users, and 3 key stakeholders in AAC assessment. We also described 2 models of AAC assessment and its dynamic process.

In this podcourse, we discussed gestalt language processing and how to identify a gestalt learner. We discussed the need to identify a gestalt language learner when assessing progress and explored what treatment would look like in relation to natural language acquisition.

In this podcourse, we discussed basic understandings of co-regulation and self-regulation. We also discussed the difference between behaviors and dysregulation or stress behaviors. In addition, we explored various strategies and approaches to co-regulation and how to integrate them into therapy.

In this podcourse, we identified 3 signs of dyslexia and discussed an SLPs role in the diagnosing process. We looked at 3 areas to assess dyslexia and how to effectively identify which 2 assessments to consider for a dyslexia evaluation.

This session also discussed the necessary components to consider for successful AAC implementation to make language learning empowering and fun for every user.

Her research centers on speech development and its disorder with specific focus on Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Currently, she is interested in a multilevel approach to determine the relation among procedural learning and speech, language, and motor deficits in children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

On this episode I am joined by Rebecca Taskin, a licensed New York City based speech and language pathologist with a background in neuroscience. She specializes in complex feeding and communication disorders. Aside from her many AAC trainings, Rebecca has been trained in PROMPT Therapy, Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders, Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), and is currently starting a TVI program at Hunter College in the Fall. She specializes in AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and provides evaluation and assessment for assistive technology and speech generating devices for children with complex disorders including children with CVI (cortical visual impairment).
