Spiritual Learnings - Shrimad Bhagavad Gita - 'श्रीमद भगवदगीता ' - हिंदी सत्संग पॉडकास्ट

By Mona Mahajan Sharma

Ep. 180 - सरल भगवद् गीता अध्याय 18 (उपसंहार - संन्यास की सिद्धि) का सार || Bhagavad Gita Simplified Chapter 18 (The Perfection of Renunciation) - Summary || 23/02/2023

The Bhagavad Gita is a sacred text in Hinduism that contains teachings on spirituality, morality, and self-realization. Chapter 18 is the final chapter of the text, and it summarizes the teachings of the previous chapters.

Krishna explains that the ultimate goal of all spiritual practice is to surrender to him and attain divine consciousness.

Chapter 18 as a whole discusses the concept of moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. It emphasizes the importance of performing one's duty without attachment to the fruits of one's actions, and the need to cultivate a sense of detachment and equanimity in all aspects of life. The chapter also covers the characteristics of the three gunas (modes of material nature) and how they influence our actions and behaviors, as well as the different paths to moksha, including the path of knowledge, the path of action, and the path of devotion. Ultimately, the chapter and the entire Bhagavad Gita aim to provide guidance and insight for spiritual seekers seeking to live a life of purpose, fulfillment, and inner peace.

(Verse73) - This verse marks the end of Arjuna's inner conflict and confusion, which he expressed in the first chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. Through Lord Krishna's guidance and teachings, Arjuna has come to understand the nature of the self, the purpose of life, and the path to ultimate liberation.

(Verse 78) - Bhagavad Gita chapter 18 verse 78 is the final verse of the chapter and the entire Gita.

This verse summarizes the central message of the Bhagavad Gita - that one can achieve prosperity, victory, happiness, and morality by following the path of yoga, which is ultimately the path of devotion to Krishna. The verse also highlights the importance of the relationship between Krishna, who represents the divine, and Arjuna, who represents the seeker of truth. By following the guidance of Krishna, Arjuna was able to overcome his doubts and achieve victory in the battle of life, and the same is true for anyone who follows the teachings of the Gita.

Ep. 174 - सरल भगवद् गीता अध्याय 18 (उपसंहार - संन्यास की सिद्धि) श्लोक 63 || Bhagavad Gita Simplified Chapter 18 (The Perfection of Renunciation) - Verses 63 || 09/02/2023

Yadhecchasi tadha Kuru: Act as you wish. The Lord simply explained the position to Arjuna. That is all. He has nothing more to say. The disciple is free to take it or leave it. Here is a great example of Nishkama-karma. Having taught the Gita Sastra, the Lord leaves it without a thought of the fruit of his action. Although the main objective of the Lord is to make Arjuna fight the battle, He remains unconcerned about the result of his message. The Lord seems to say “you may fight or you may not. That is your decision, not mine. I have taught you the essence of all the Vedas, and it is your duty in the present situation, to take it or leave it. I am unconcerned”. Such is the way how great teachers act in respect of their disciples. Their message is delivered in a simple and powerful way. They pass on, leaving it to the people to think about it, draw their own conclusions and come to their own decision. This is an example of Nishkama-karma with which the scripture comes to a close.

Lord Krishna does not impose his teachings on Arjuna but instead gives him the freedom to choose his own path. This verse shows that in the end, it is up to each individual to use their own discernment and make choices based on their own understanding and beliefs.

As The Bhagavad Gita has come to its conclusion, Shri Krishna wanted to clearly point out to Arjuna that observing his duty as a warrior was the solution to his dilemma. This also meant that he had to stop listening to his ego and listen to Ishvara. In fact, he had to completely submit himself to Ishvara’s will, by fixing his mind or chitta on Ishvara, and accepting the results of all actions as praasaada, a gift from Ishvara. Shri Krishna promised Arjuna that he will overcome all durguna, and all challenges if he performed his duty in this fashion.

For one who acts in Krishna consciousness, Lord Krishna becomes the most intimate friend. He always looks after His friend's comfort, and He gives Himself to His friend, who is so devotedly engaged working twenty-four hours a day to please the Lord.

Verse 57 states that by taking complete refuge in the Supreme Being, giving up all actions to Him, and having self-control, one can attain supreme peace and everlasting happiness. Thus, the ultimate goal of life is to surrender to God and perform all actions for His pleasure, not for one's own selfish desires. This verse emphasizes the importance of devotion and surrenders to the Divine in order to attain true liberation and inner peace.

Ep. 171 - सरल भगवद् गीता अध्याय 18 (उपसंहार - संन्यास की सिद्धि) श्लोक 56 || Bhagavad Gita Simplified Chapter 18 (The Perfection of Renunciation) - Verses 56 || 01/02/2023

It is declared here that by performing actions with devotion to the Lord, man secures His grace, by which deliverance is obtained. Though a man is engaged in the activities of the world with all the senses functioning continuously, if he remembers the Lord or if he surrenders the fruits of his works to the Lord, he obtains the grace of Iswara and liberation comes to him easily. From this, we understand that action performed with true devotion leads man to a state of supreme Bliss. Such is the state of the true devotee whose mind is centered on the Lord and who feels that it is the power of the Lord which is functioning through him.

In that divine consciousness, they do not give up work, rather they renounce the pride of being the doers and enjoyers of work. They see all work as devotional service to the Supreme, and they depend upon him for its performance.

Ep. 170 - सरल भगवद् गीता अध्याय 18 (उपसंहार - संन्यास की सिद्धि) श्लोक 55 || Bhagavad Gita Simplified Chapter 18 (The Perfection of Renunciation) - Verses 55 || 25/01/2023

In the previous verse, it is said that knowledge leads to the highest devotion; and here it is said that devotion helps to know the Lord in truth, what He is, and who He is. Therefore it is perfectly clear that devotion and knowledge sustain and strengthen each other mutually. The perfect knower of Brahman is also the perfect Bhakta, and the perfected Bhakta is also the sage of supreme wisdom.

The fruit of bhakti is jnyaana. Jnyaana emerges as bhakti ripens. Bhakti purifies the mind of all impurities, which eliminates the idea of identity or separation between the seeker and the outside world. The seeker unites with Ishvara after realizing that his self and Ishvara’s self are one and the same and that “asi” in “tat tvam asi,” “you are that,” means “you are that.”

As the action is performed by the senses and the physical organs, it is within the region of the objective world, conditioned by the three Gunas.

Therefore, there is no need to renunciate our deeds and obligations because they are flawed in some way. We must thus acknowledge this reality and keep doing our best work. There can be no fire without the covering veil of smoke. In spite of it, one should not abandon the duty to which he is born, because if it is performed with detachment and in a spirit of surrender to the Lord, it purifies the mind and leads to liberation.

Shri Krishna says that we should stick to performing our svadharma (prescribed duties). The duties of another man appear easy and attractive, but the true seeker should stick to his own method and way of life.  In karma yoga, we are only expected to perform our best actions, and not worry about the result. By performing our svadharma, by doing the best we can, we automatically, fear the consequence of our action, whether or not it will be a merit or a sin. To perform actions fearlessly is a blessing in itself.

Shri Krishna says that we should submit the performance of our duty as an offering to Ishvara. if we can simply perform our swa-dharma (prescribed duties) in accordance with our nature and position in life, we will participate in his divine plan for our purification. When done in devotional consciousness our work itself becomes a form of worship.

This message is particularly applicable to Arjun because he wanted to run away from his dharma, thinking it is painful and miserable. In this verse, Shri Krishna instructs him that by doing his prescribed duty in pure consciousness he will be worshipping the Supreme, and will easily attain perfection.

In summary, for the person in the mode of goodness happiness, is the source of misery, to begin with, but ends with a taste of nectar. In the mode of passion, happiness is perceived as enlivening, to begin with, but results in misery. Happiness in the mode of ignorance is miserable, to begin with, and at the end.

Therefore, those who are enlightened should follow the Lord’s command and abandon all Tamasic and Rajasic pleasures. Holding on to Sattva, one can purify himself and rise to the highest state.

A conditioned soul is always engaged in some type of sense gratification, but when he understands by good association that it is only a repetition of the same thing, and he is awakened to his real Krsna consciousness, he is sometimes relieved from such repetitive so-called happiness.

In the pursuit of self-realization, one has to follow many rules and regulations to control the mind and the senses and to concentrate the mind on the Self. All these procedures are very difficult and bitter like poison, but if one is successful in following the regulations and comes to the transcendental position, he begins to drink real nectar, and he enjoys life.

Now, Shri Krishna describes three types of the kartaa, the doer. The doer is nothing but the state of our mind from the start of an action to its end. In other words, the same action can be performed differently by different types of doers. We see this in our lives as well. No two people will perform a task in quite the same way.

“The worker who is detached is sāttvic in nature; the one who is excessively attached to action and its results is rājasic; one who is devoid of discrimination is tāmasic. But the worker who is surrendered to me is transcendental to the three modes.”

Having explained the three kinds of knowledge, Shri Krishna now describes the three kinds of action. Now we come to the topic of karma, the action itself. Knowledge is the main instigator of any action. So if the knowledge is sattvic, the action will be sattvic, and so on.

(Verse 23) Shri Krishna declares, that action in the mode of goodness is doing one’s duty in accordance with the scriptures. He further adds that such work should be without attachment or aversion, and without the desire to enjoy the results.

(Verse 24) Action performed with a longing for its fruit and with the egotistic feeling of personal agency is Rajasic action. It is performed with great effort .

(Verse 25) Whatever work is done without regard to the ensuing effects, without regard to the loss or injuries to oneself and others, and without regard to one’s own ability, is Tamasic.

Shri Krishna once again refers to the three modes of nature. In chapter 14, he had given an introduction to these modes and described how they bind the soul to the samsara of life and death. Here, according to the three guṇas, the Lord will explain the three types of knowledge, action, and doers.

To help Arjuna choose wisely, Krishna analyzes in terms of the three modes of the various elements of decision-making, including the key factor is knowledge. Through an analysis of knowledge in the three modes, Krishna encourages Arjuna to cultivate the vision that is most conducive to his duty.

Five elements are present wherever action occurs. These elements are the physical body, the agent, the sensory organs, behaviors, and "divine providence." Persons of  "limited understanding" see themselves as the sole agent of an action and fail to recognize these five components.

(Verse 11) Now, Shri Krishna adds another bit of context to the topic of karma yoga. If we understand renunciation to be the external abandonment of works, then no one can ever be truly renounced. However, Shri Krishna states here that if one can give up attachment to the fruits of actions, not give up action itself, it is considered perfect renunciation. If we are true karma yogis, we are tyaagis per this definition. We still need to deal with the issue of our strong identification with the body.

(Verse12) Shri Krishna elaborates on the theory of karma in this chapter. Every action has a reaction, and this reaction is also known as the phala, result or fruit of the action. This infinite chain of action, reaction, fruit, desire, and action is nothing but bondage or samsara. One who is an atyaagi, one who has not given up attachment to fruits of action, is bound in this chain. By practicing karma yoga, and by giving up attachment to the fruit of action, we can break this chain.

He says that such behaviour is inappropriate and is not in line with the teachings of karma yoga. Not doing one’s duty is forbidden in karma yoga.

Chapter 18 of the Bhagavad Gita is the conclusion. In this chapter, Shri Krishna repeats the most secretive knowledge and also reveals to Arjun the passage to achieve complete liberation and Supreme God.

(Verse 2) In this final chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna teaches Arjuna about renunciation. Krishna makes a distinction between the concept of renunciation and that of relinquishing. The attitude of giving up attachment to the rewards of actions is tyāg, while the attitude of giving up work is sanyas. Shri Krishna states that wise people lay emphasis on tyāg, meaning “internal renunciation.”

(Verse 5) Shri Krishna describes that we should never renounce actions that elevate us and are beneficial for humankind. Such actions, if performed in the proper consciousness, do not bind us, instead, they help us grow spiritually.

Ep. 156 - सरल भगवद् गीता अध्याय 17 (श्रद्धा के विभाग) का सार || Bhagavad Gita Simplified Chapter 17 (Divisions of Faith) - Summary || 02/12/2022

The seventeenth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita is Divisions of Faith. In this chapter, Krishna describes the three types of faith corresponding to the three modes of material nature. Lord Krishna further reveals that it is the nature of faith that determines the quality of life and the character of living entities. Those who have faith in passion and ignorance perform actions that yield temporary, material results while those who have faith in goodness perform actions in accordance with scriptural instructions and hence their hearts get further purified.

(Verse 22) Having covered the nature of sattvic and rajasic charity, Shri Krishna now describes tamasic charity. if a person gives charity to a suitable person without respect and without attention, that sort of charity is also said to be in the mode of darkness.

(Verse 28) Faith (Shraddha) is the keynote of success either in worldly life or in spiritual life. Without it, nothing is achieved even in small matters concerning everyday life. In spiritual life where a man tries to ascend to the highest state the need for unswerving faith is greatly emphasized. That is why the Lord insists on faith in many places and He has devoted a whole Discourse to elaborate on the theme of faith (Shraddha).

In order to firmly establish that all Vedic activities should be performed with faith, Shri Krishna now emphasizes the futility of Vedic activities done without it. He says that those who act without faith in the scriptures do not get good fruits in this life because their actions are not perfectly executed. Thus, one’s faith should not be based upon one’s own impressions of the mind and intellect. Instead, it should be based upon the infallible authority of the Vedic scriptures. This is the essence of the seventeenth chapter.

(Verse 20) Shri Krishna described the characteristics or conditions of charity performed with a sattvic attitude. Conducting charity out of a sense of duty is the first condition. It should come naturally to us, and not because someone has asked us to do it.

Every man should offer charity as a sacred duty, and not for gaining honor and fame in the world. “It is my duty to offer this gift to this man, and therefore I am giving it” – such should be the spirit behind all acts of a beneficent nature. In truth, whatever good we do to others, whatever sacrifice we make for the sake of others, is well done unto one’s own self. So, when we help poor and needy people, let us remember that we are not supporting them, for, the Lord is the support to all, but adding to the pile of our to own righteousness which will greatly advance our own spiritual aim.

(Verse 21) Shri Krishna says that the giving of charity, and gifts in general while expecting something in return, is rajasic charity.

Verses 14, 15, and 16, which deal with the restraint and discipline of the body, speech, and mind, are of the greatest importance for all seekers. They should practice the three-fold austerity, and attain perfect purity of body, speech, and mind. Such purity at once leads to self-realization.

(Verse 14) The word tapaḥ means “to heat up. The Vedas state: atapta tanurnatadā mośhnute (Rig Veda 9.83.1)[v3] “Without purifying the body through austerity, one cannot reach the final state of yog.” By sincerely practicing austerity, human beings can uplift and transform their lives from the mundane to the divine. Such austerity should be performed without show, with pure intent, in a peaceable manner, and in conformance with the guidance of our scriptures.

(Verse 15) The need for practicing the study of the Sastras is emphasized here. Every day some parts or portions of the Bhagavad Gita, Vedas, Upanishads, and the Puranas should be read. By truthfulness and Svadhyaya, speech acquires mysterious power. What is spoken even casually comes out true in actual life.
