Sport Equipment and the Circular Economy (with Nomads Surfing co-founder Thomas Cervetti)

Sport Equipment and the Circular Economy (with Nomads Surfing co-founder Thomas Cervetti)

Thomas Cervetti, 34 years old, is a former Civil Engineer and passionate surfer. He was living in South East Asia for 5 years where he met Nicolas and Basile. Surfing all over Indonesia, they faced shocking plastic pollution and could noticed its impact on marine life and reefs. That’s when they decided to start NOMADS SURFING in order to develop alternatives in the surf industry.
Nomads Surfing, an ecofriendly surf brand, is the story of three friends, three surfers but most of all, three globetrotters: Nicolas, Thomas and Basile, traveling from West to East for work or pleasure but always with a surfboard in their luggage. The story started on April 2017, around a good beer at the bottom of the Pyla dune, facing the ocean, this ocean that became our project’s keystone.

Racing with Purpose (with The Ocean Race, Lucy Hunt)

Lucy Hunt is a Senior Advisor with The Ocean Race Summits & Learning programmes, the Founder of the Sea Synergy Marine Awareness + Activity Centre. She specializes in: Environmental Event content creation, Multigenerational Environmental Education, Marine Awareness, Outdoor Learning, Social + Environmental Event programming and strategy, Marine Research, MMO, Environmental surveys, PADI Divemaster, marine tour guide, surveyor, Senior Advisor on marine conservation and curriculum creation, Environmental awareness exhibtion content creation, Environmental awareness film production researcher and content creation, speech content and writing, Environmental documentary host and narrator. The Ocean Race is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, sailing’s toughest team challenge and one of the sport’s Big Three events, alongside the Olympic Games and America’s Cup. To truly understand the race, though, it’s better to think of it in a way the athletes who take part will recognise immediately. Put simply, The Ocean Race is an obsession, and many of the world's best sailors have dedicated years, even decades of their lives trying to win it. Since 1973, The Ocean Race has provided the ultimate test of a team and a human adventure like no other. For nearly 50 years, it has kept an almost mythical hold over some of the greatest sailors and been the proving ground for the legends of our sport. School of Hard Knocks (with Fakhrie Arendse)

Fakhrie Arendse is the Sport Social Worker at School of Hard Knocks. He is an optimistic, compassionate, and outspoken husband and father. Fakhrie's passion for Social Work was born out of exposure to adverse norms in his own community, and a rather inexplicable interest in 'why people are the way they are'. This psychology major has since worked with society's most vulnerable; his experience ranging from trauma and grief counselling, mediation, family therapy, advocacy, conflict management, youth development, community strengthening, public speaking, to project management and coordination.
He has a particular passion for youth empowerment through sport and believes the fruits of a well-functioning society are fostered in the efforts of nurturing young people - by creating an environment conducive for youth to make a positive contribution to the world at large.
School of Hard Knocks (SoHK) is an award winning Cape Town based non-profit with a proven track record in using sport and one on one counselling to help young people cope with trauma, change outdated perceptions of gender, and improve their physical and emotional well-being.

Reimagining Sport Events (with Hamilton 2030 Chair Louis Frapporti)

Reimagining Sport Events (with Hamilton 2030 Chair Louis Frapporti)

Louis Frapporti is the Chair of the 2030 Commonwealth Games Bid for Hamilton.

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada gave birth to the Games almost 100 years ago. Ontario has not hosted the Commonwealth Games since their inception. Bringing them back to Ontario on their centenary would be noteworthy. But while noting the historical significance of this bid is important it’s not enough. Large-scale international sporting events the world over are at a crossroads.  In the face of pressing societal need, their cost to taxpayers is seen as excessive, particularly on the heels of the economic dislocation caused by a global pandemic. Therefore, if we are to secure the privilege of hosting the Commonwealth Games there is a need to reinvent them. This is our mission. Having given birth to the Games 100 years ago what better legacy than their revitalization for the next century?

Engaging Communities around Sport for Development Projects (with love.fútbol)

Engaging Communities around Sport for Development Projects (with love.fútbol)

Drew Chafetz has had a ball at his feet since before he can remember. By the age of 12, he had traveled with his family to 6 continents, finding the game and connecting with kids who shared the same passion. In a small town in Morocco in 2005, Drew saw children playing pickup in a dangerous alley, inspiring him to start love.fútbol. Drew is driven by his gratitude and love for the game and travel, interest in economics and social enterprise, and belief in self-expression as an instrument for personal and community development.
love.fútbol specializes in partnering with underserved communities to plan, build, activate, and sustain their own recreational spaces, and as a result, strengthen their communities. Rather than an end product, our projects are a process where in-depth community engagement and a critical focus on sustainability are interdependent and integral to the entire project.

Gender Equality through Sport in Genocide Impacted Countries (with Kids Play International)

Gender Equality through Sport in Genocide Impacted Countries (with Kids Play International)

Katey Lippitt serves as the Country Director at Kids Play International based in Siem Reap, Cambodia. She is a postgraduate student-athlete from The University of Nottingham in Nottingham, England where she completed an MSc in Business and Management. Previously, she completed a BBA in Marketing with an emphasis in Sales from Georgia Southern University.
Kids Play International believes gender equity transforms communities and countries and that it is not only a woman’s right, it is a human right. KPI leverages the power of sport and the Olympic values in a safe space so girls and boys can positively challenge and shift harmful gender, social and cultural norms. Sport has been proven to provide a unique environment where harmful norms can be renegotiated giving girls the same opportunities as boys to reach their full potential. Genocide education and prevention goes hand in hand with gender equity as the assumptions and perceptions a society holds regarding the roles and responsibilities of each gender effect their power dynamics in and out of conflict.

Sport and Reforestation (with Football for Forests)

Football for Forests (F4F) is a non-profit initiative on a mission to restore tropical forests through the power of football. Forest destruction is often depicted in football pitches. They are working to flip this narrative: the football pitch becomes a symbol of forest restoration. They are targeting the biggest crowd in the world with their digital app - 3.5 billion football fans across the globe. They want to restore 10,000 football pitches of forest, equivalent to ca. 7,000 hectares and nearly 12 million trees over the next five years. They track their impact through robust and transparent community-based monitoring and reporting system, enabled through our digital app. Szymon Mikolajczyk is the Program Coordinator with Football for Forests. He is driven by accelerating climate action through environmental markets. Sport and Mental Health (with Koun)

Sport and Mental Health (with Koun)

Koun, a Lebanese NGO, started operating in 2018 in refugee camps and community centres across the country, and was registered in January 2020. Koun aims at promoting mental health, empowerment and peace in marginalized communities in Lebanon through Yoga. We are driven by the belief that well-being is a condition that every individual should have, regardless of age, race, or social class. Yoga is an ancient body-mind practice and an efficient psychosocial support activity that works on every aspect of one’s being. Each yoga activity focuses on enhancing the practitioner’s self-awareness while releasing their muscular, mental and emotional tensions, leading to an enhanced psychological state.

Sandy Boutros, a Lebanese activist and yoga instructor, founded her non-profit Koun to promote mental health and total well-being in the most disadvantaged communities in Lebanon through Yoga. She believes that yoga should be accessible to everyone regardless of age, race and social class. Koun is the perfect way for Sandy to propagate yoga not only as a powerful tool for well-being but also as a discipline that promotes inclusion, equity and empowerment.

Can Sport Clubs Engage Fans in Sustainable Eating? (with Hubbub)

Can Sport Clubs Engage Fans in Sustainable Eating? (with Hubbub)

Sustainable eating pilot show huge potential for football fans to help tackle climate change
Nearly 6,000 tonnes of CO2 could be saved if Premier League fans just swapped to veggie burgers for one weekend. The impact would be even bigger if they were inspired to make simple changes in their everyday lives.
Manchester is Green was a three-week challenge run by environmental charity Hubbub in May 2022. Through a series of activities including cook-alongs and match-day challenges, 72 Manchester United and Manchester City fans and their households were supported to eat better for their pockets, for their health, and for the planet.
The project set out to explore if football could be used as a hook to inspire fans and their households to eat better for the environment, and flip some of the stereotypes about football and food habits on their head: to see if we could shift from burgers, chips and pies to beans, pulses, and sweet potato fries.
Hubbub has published an impact report and encourages organisations interested in collaborating to email

She then went on to skipper the first all-female non stop around the world record attempt and managed Maiden II the first ever fully mixed-sex professional racing team.
Tracy founded The Maiden Factor in the process of rescuing of her beloved yacht Maiden. In 2016 she decided she wanted to do more than just restore Maiden, she also wanted to make sure she was used for something special. For Tracy, the drive to get girls who are currently denied the basic right of an education into school, is particularly poignant as she was expelled from school at 15. She now knows what she gave away.
Maiden is a Global Ambassador for the Empowerment of Girls through Education
1. Maiden inspires women and girls all over the world
2. Maiden raises funds for girls’ educational programmes around the world
3. Maiden shows, by example, what girls can achieve if they embrace STEM subjects

25 - Sport for Development (with Golden Boots Uganda)

Muhammed Kisirisa-Mo is a former armature soccer player, his passion for sport drove him to start Golden Boots Uganda in 2019. Growing up from Bwaise, the biggest slum area in Kampala capital and raised from a family of more than 20 children, Mo started playing football from the age of 11 which eventually earned him a high school scholarship. At 19 years, he established a football academy to help, even the poorest and most marginalized children have fun and enjoy their childhood. In 2013, he became the first African recipient of the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award-Conviction. While in the US, he shared a stage with celebrities like Michael Bolton, Christina Aguilera and a light moment with the GOAT-Muhammad Ali, his famous quote’’ Boxing introduced me to the World” inspired him to use sport as a tool for social change. Golden Boots Uganda-GoBU is nonprofit NGO empowering young people to build resilience, secure their future through sport, and become change agents in their communities.

Sport for All (with Matt Rogan)

Sport for All (with Matt Rogan)

Matt Rogan (author) is the co-founder of Two Circles, writer, and respected sports business leader. Matt led the business from 2011-2020, during which time it grew to 300+ people and worked with the 6 biggest rights holders in the world. He is a non-executive director of the English Institute of Sport, delivering technology and sport science to Britain's Olympic and Paralympic teams as well as a Member of UK Sport’s World Class Events panel bringing major sports events to the UK. Matt’s second book, ‘All to Play For: How Sport Can Reboot our Future’ was recently published by Penguin Random House. Matt is currently travelling the world talking about its implications – from schools in the UK to Paris where we met, from Manchester United Football Club to the International Olympic Committee. The book has recently been shortlisted for the Sunday Times Sports Book Awards 2022. After a fractious period following the financial crash of 2008/9, and the recent devastation of the Covid-19 pandemic, sport - one of our few remaining collective rituals - is entering its golden age. An increasingly acknowledged powerful force for good, it is undergoing a dramatic transformation that will positively impact our lives, on and off the pitch. From the shared experience of a nationwide event that makes us celebrate together and the individual benefits to mind and body of lacing up your trainers, to the political leverage of a sportsperson's Twitter account, All to Play For is a roadmap for the way that sports can and do unite us in the worst of times.

Laura Stargel is a graduate student at the German Sport University in Cologne studying International Sport Development and Politics. Her work has been recognized by Global Sports Week, selected as a two-time Young Sports Maker, and as a speaker at the University of Louisville, Florida Climate Week, and on the Climate Champions podcast, among others. Laura also plays ruby in the Washington DC area. Sport is facing a global revolution.

Around the world, the speed of digitization is matched only by the pace of societal change. Today, sport requires a new mindset, one that transcends profits and addresses the expectations of the new generation. We are convinced that sport, in this context of transformation, can play a bigger role in addressing the major social challenges of our age. It’s time for action, to reconnect sport with its true purpose and redefine its role in society into a force for good and a force for innovation. At the intersection between the worlds of business, culture, media, politics and civil society, GSW curates, informs, connects and empowers a community made of all the actors who shape the future of sport. To do so, GSW offers a privileged platform and setting, which looks to federate the wider sports ecosystem beyond the traditional issues of the sports industry.

Sport and Homelessness (with The Homeless Games)

Sport and Homelessness (with The Homeless Games)

Eric Houghton has been involved with the Homeless World Cup since he was the England captain back in 2003. But it was a chance conversation with one of his mates Dave Morton – who doesn’t like football one bit – that led to them launching the Homeless Games. There are huge benefits for each and every homeless person who takes part. A chance to improve their health, both physical and mental. Developing their confidence and pride. Helping them to find new pathways, gaining new skills and accessing much-needed support. Since 2010, The Homeless Games (THG) has hosted the two-day annual Homeless Games in Liverpool, providing ‘Olympic style’ games for people who are or have experienced homelessness in last two years with participants coming from across the UK to take part. THG has arranged and organised provision for health and well-being stalls and services including Cancer Awareness, Drink Awareness, Substance Misuse, Sexual Health Advice, Massage, Health Checks, Premier League Health Courses, Dental Advice, Healthy Eating and Dietary Advice were made available to all those who attended the main two day event.  These were offered in conjunction with the local area Primary Care Trusts, the local Premier League Football Clubs (Everton Foundation and Liverpool Football Club), Age Concern and Local Authorities.
