Qurratulain Hyder was one of the most influential and successful progressive writers post Independence. She was bilingual, writing and translating in both Urdu and English. Her literary life was rich as a novelist and a short story writer, an academic, and a journalist. Her magnum opus, ‘Aag Ka Dariya’ is her best known work. The women in her stories live layered lives often in gray areas between theoretical morality and unforgiving reality. She was born in Aligarh into a literary family and completed her education there.  She then studied at Indraprastha College in Delhi and moved to Pakistan in 1947. Later she moved to England, but found her way back home to India, where she lived and wrote until her demise in 2007.

A new kind of Hindi writing emerged post-independence approximately from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. The subjects that writers focussed on came from a newly independent, rapidly urbanizing and industrializing India. The narratives dealt with problems between the sexes, especially with the emergence of the working woman and the scenarios mirrored the difficulties of everyday negotiations of life and work. Mannu Bhadari was one of the pioneers of this “Nayi Kahani movement”. Her works spans decades and one finds many memorable female characters in her stories...one such is Bua in Akeli.

Shrilal Shukla, one of the greatest satirists in Hindi language was a Jnanpith awardee. A civil servant in his day job, Shukla had an upclose view of bureaucracy as well as the systemic rot that plagues it. Shukla’s acerbic, witty examination of rural life revealed a world of flummoxed villagers and petty politicians, of witty one liners that shine through the overall bleakness of village life.

I have to confess that for a long time I associated Premchand’s writing with a kind of morose sentimentality. How and why that thought anchored itself in my head I have no clue, but it was no doubt a result of my ignorance.

I “discovered” Premchand in the last few years and am glad to be proven wrong. His writing has the depth and breadth that few other authors can claim. His observations are sharp, his humour sparkling and even the minor characters in his writing become unforgettable. And then there’s his personal life- his commitment to progressive writing, the relationship he shared with his writer wife- Shivrani, his commitment to his art. I keep adding to the list.

I am glad to share a story today that is as incisive a commentary on education, as it is witty.

It was a personal tragedy that propelled Mulk Raj Anand into a writing career. His first essay was in response to the suicide of an aunt excommunicated by her family for sharing a meal with a Muslim woman. It is the rigidity of the caste system and the deplorable condition that the poor of the country live in that became his literary preoccupation for the rest of his life. Known as India's Charles Dickens, Mulk Raj Anand, along with R. K Narayan is credited for having brought Indian English writing to International readers. One of the founding members of Progressive Writers Association, Mulk Raj Anand remained committed to the cause of Indian independence, writing propaganda materials while living in London. He continued to write after he moved back to India in 1947.

Yashpal's life was so full of twists, turns and intrigues that it could inspire an OTT series! Born into poverty, ridiculed by school mates but with a head full of ideals, Yashpal youth was marked with conflict and strife. It was when he met Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev in college that his life took a definitive purposeful turn and he jumped headlong into the freedom struggle, albeit of the violent kind. He became a fugitive, was betrayed by friends, did prison time, was in a shoot-out and found love that lasted him a lifetime- all this was grist for the mill for when he hung his hat and settled into a quiet life of a writer.

Gulzar, the modern day bard has songs (and stories and dialogues) for all occasions. Few others can speak of ardent love with such brevity-“Tere bina zindagi se koi shikwa to nahi…” or be in sync with the rhythms of a playful child, “Sare ke Sare Gama ko le kar…” or my personal favorite- an apt comment on the human condition- “Goli maro bheje mein, bheja shor karta hai.”

गोविन्द मिश्र का जीवन परिचय

गोविन्द मिश्र का बचपन बचपन गाँव के प्राकृतिक वातावरण में, बाँदा में बीता। स्नातक की उपाधि के लिए वे इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय गए जहाँ उन्होंने संस्कृत साहित्य, मध्यकालीन इतिहास और अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य के साथ यह उपाधि प्राप्त की। गोविन्द मिश्र को उनकी साहित्य सेवाओं के लिए अनेकों सम्मान मिले हैं। इनमे से प्रमुख हैं, उत्तर प्रदेश हिन्दी संस्थान, भारतीय भाषा परिषद कलकत्ता, साहित्य अकादमी दिल्ली तथा व्यास सम्मान।

The stories of partition carry in them a searing pain, a reminder to those who will bother to remember, of what we humans are capable of doing to ourselves and our own. When the lust for power blinds us, how quickly we let go of the rope of love, only to fall into the abyss of hate. The British drew the line of death on the ground,  but it is we who drew blood from our neighbor.

उर्दू लेखक, सआदत हसन मंटो (11 मई 1912 – 18 जनवरी 1955) अपने बेबाक लेखन के लिए जाने गए. कहानियों में अश्लीलता के आरोप मंटो पर लगे और उन्हें छह बार अदालत जाना पड़ा था, लेकिन ये आरोप कभी सिद्ध नहीं हुए. वे अपनी लघु कथाओं, बू, खोल दो, ठंडा गोश्त और चर्चित टोबा टेकसिंह के लिए प्रसिद्ध हुए।कहानीकार होने के साथ-साथ मंटो फिल्म और रेडिया पटकथा लेखक और पत्रकार भी थे। सिर्फ इक्कीस साल के लेखन में, उन्होंने बाइस लघु कथा संग्रह, एक उपन्यास, रेडियो नाटक के पांच संग्रह, रचनाओं के तीन संग्रह और व्यक्तिगत रेखाचित्र के दो संग्रह प्रकाशित कर डाले

Krishan Chander, best known for his stories about the aftermath of partition and the Bengal famine, spent his early years in Poonch, Kashmir. भगवती चरण वर्मा  का जीवन परिचय /Bhagwati Charan Verma ka Jeevan Parichay

भगवती चरण वर्मा का जन्म उत्तर प्रदेश के उन्नाव जिले में हुआ था।  उन्होंने प्रयागराज से बी॰ए॰, एल॰एल॰बी॰ की डिग्री प्राप्त की लेकिन उनकी  रूचि कविता लेखन में थी । फिर उपन्यासकार के रूप में वे विख्यात हुए। वर्मा  जी ने 1936 के करीब फिल्म कारपोरेशन, कलकत्ता में कार्य भी किया। ‘विचार’  नामक साप्ताहिक के प्रकाशन-संपादन के बाद बंबई में फिल्म-कथालेखन उन्होंने  किया। इसके उपरांत  दैनिक ‘नवजीवन’ का सम्पादन, फिर आकाशवाणी के कई  केंन्दों में कार्य भी वर्मा जी ने किया।

उनके उपन्यास ‘चित्रलेखा’  पर दो बार फिल्म-निर्माण हुआ। पद्मभूषण तथा राज्यसभा की मानद सदस्यता भी उन्हें प्राप्त हुई।

What would two great writers from history talk about if they were to meet? We may not find that out, but when one translates the works of the other, what  is evident is a sense of common concern, a shared worldview and a hat tip to the greatness of the other.

When Premchand translated works of Leo Tolstoy, he didn’t just use his vast and rich vocabulary to retell the great Russian’s work in Hindustani, he took the story and drew its essence in a way that the story became Indian.

Incidentally, if you listen carefully you’ll recognize another work or two that may have been inspired by the original. Do let me know if you do!

मुंशी प्रेमचंद का जीवन परिचय : धनपत राय श्रीवास्तव जिन्हे साहित्य प्रेमी प्रेमचंद के नाम से जाने जाते  हैं,  हिन्दी और उर्दू के शायद सबसे अधिक  लोकप्रिय रचनाकार हैं । उन्होंने  सेवासदन, प्रेमाश्रम, रंगभूमि, निर्मला, गबन, कर्मभूमि, गोदान आदि लगभग  डेढ़ दर्जन उपन्यास तथा कफन, पूस की रात, पंच परमेश्वर, बड़े घर की बेटी,  बूढ़ी काकी, दो बैलों की कथा आदि तीन सौ से अधिक कहानियाँ लिखीं। उनके  उपन्यास सुर कथाएं हिन्दी तथा उर्दू दोनों भाषाओं में प्रकाशित हुईं। अपने  दौर की सभी प्रमुख उर्दू और हिन्दी पत्रिकाओं जमाना, सरस्वती, माधुरी,  मर्यादा, चाँद, सुधा आदि में भी उन्होंने लिखा।वे हिन्दी समाचार पत्र जागरण  तथा साहित्यिक पत्रिका हंस के संपादक और प्रकाशक भी रहे। इसके लिए  उन्होंने सरस्वती प्रेस खरीदा जो बाद में घाटे में रहा और बन्द करना पड़ा।  प्रेमचंद फिल्मों की पटकथा लिखने मुंबई भी गए  और लगभग तीन वर्ष तक रहे। वे  जीवन के अंतिम दिनों तक वे साहित्य सृजन में लगे रहे।

राजिंदर सिंह बेदी ने गरम कोट, निकोलाई गोगोल की कहानी, ओवरकोट से प्रभावित  हो कर लिखी, और फिर उसी कहानी को और आगे बढ़ाया जब उन्होंने फिल्म का  स्क्रीनप्ले लिखा। जहाँ गोगोल की कहानी मूलतः एक ऐसे आदमी की है जो एक  ओवरकोट बनवाने की ख्वाइश रखता है, बेदी की कहानी, गरम कोट बन जाती है एक  ऐसी दम्पति  की कहानी, जिसे ज़िन्दगी की “सस्ती सी खुशियां” तो मयस्सर नहीं ,  लेकिन जिनके बीच अनकहा प्यार धड़कता है।

Rajinder Singh Bedi adapted Nikolai Gogol’s short story, The Overcoat  into Garam Coat and then further wrote a screenplay for a film by the  same name. In his adaptation, Bedi moved quite far from the original,  only taking the coat as a leitmotif. While Gogol’s story revolves around  a man’s desire for a new coat, Garam Coat, the short story is a  poignant story of a man who struggles between his own needs and his  longing to fulfill his family’s desires. The movie version, starring  Balraj Sahani goes a few steps further and explores the ups and downs in  the protagonist’s married life.

Rajinder Singh Bedi was a pillar of the Progressive Writers Movement.  After the partition he moved to Bombay where he made his mark as a  dialogue writer, screenplay writer and director. He wrote dialogues for  several of Hindi film classics including Mirza Ghalib, Devdas, Abhiman,  Garam Coat, Daag, Anupama etc. He also directed Phagun, Dastak etc.

सूर्यबाला जी का जन्म  25 अक्टूबर 1944 को वाराणसी में हुआ। वे एक लेखिका  और व्यंगकार के रूप में सुप्रसिद्ध हैं। अपने जन्मस्थान वाराणसी से  सूर्यबाला जी की बहुत सी यादें जुड़ी हैं, जो उनकी कहानियों में गलियों,  मोहल्लों के वर्णन में दिखलाई देती हैं। उनका बचपन बड़े ही लाड़-प्यार में  धार्मिक, सांस्कृतिक क्रियाकलापों में ही बीता।

सूर्यबाला जी की माँ, श्रीमती केशरकुमारी एक आदर्श गृहिणी थी और पिता, स्व.  श्री वीरप्रतापसिंह श्रीवास्तव जिला विद्यालय में निरीक्षक पद पर कार्यरत  थे। उनके माता-पिता दोनों शिक्षित तथा हिंदी, उर्दू तथा अंग्रेजी भाषा के  ज्ञता थे।डॉ. सूर्यबाला जी ने ‘रीति साहित्य’ में काशी हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय  के बड़े विद्वान तथा समीक्षक डॉ. बच्चन सिंह के निर्देशन में अपना शोध  कार्य पूर्ण किया परिवार और माता-पिता के आदर्शों का गहरा प्रभाव सूर्यबाला  जी पर पड़ा और लेखन औरज्ञान साधना उन्हें हमेशा भाइ। डॉ. सूर्यबाला जी ने  ‘रीति साहित्य’ में काशी हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय के विद्वान तथा समीक्षक डॉ.  बच्चन सिंह के निर्देशन में अपना शोध कार्य पूर्ण किया।

सूर्यबाला जी कीअनेक रचनाओं को आकाशवाणी, दूरदर्शन एवं धारावाहिकों में  प्रसारित किया गया है और उनकी अनेक रचनाओं का अंग्रेजी, उर्दू, मराठी,  बंगाली, पंजाबी, तेलुगु, कन्नड़ आदि भाषाओं में अनुवाद भी  हुआ है।

If you grew up in the late 70’s-80’s ...right when Indian television was  coming into its own...when alternate cinema of a certain kind of middle  class sensibility was gaining ground with films like Mausam,  Rajnigandha, Rang Birangi, pati patni aur woh…you would know the name  Kamleshwar.   Kamleshwar Nath Saxena was a prolific writer and in his career spanning  four decades, he wrote in different genres ranging from literary  criticism, travelogue, memoirs, to socio-cultural commentary. He edited  magazines and newspapers, became the Additional Director General of  doordarshan, wrote screenplays, dialogues, wrote stories in TV serials  like Chandrakanta and Betal pachisi. He wrote over three hundred  stories,worked for over 75 feature films including his book, Kaali Andhi  which was adapted by Gulzar sahab into the film Andhi.  He was a writer from the Nayi Kahani ("New Story") movement of the  50’s...when Hindi sahitya was moving away from pre-independence style  and content was shaped by addressing issues about the newly independent,  rapidly urbanizing and industrializing India.

भीष्म साहनी का जीवन परिचय : 

रावलपिंडी पाकिस्तान में जन्मे भीष्म साहनी आधुनिक हिन्दी साहित्य के  प्रमुख नामों में सेहैं ।उन्होंने लाहौर गवर्नमेन्ट कॉलेज से अंग्रेजी  साहित्य में एम ए करि. इसके बाद उन्होंने पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय से पीएचडी की  उपाधि हासिल की।   भारत पाकिस्तान विभाजन के बाद उन्होंने शिक्षक होने के साथ-साथ व्यापार भी  किया और र समाचारपत्रों में लिखने का काम भी किया। बाद में भारतीय जन नाट्य  संघ (IPTA) से जुड़े ।   कुछ समय अंबाला और अमृतसर में अध्यापक होने  के बाद दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय  में वे साहित्य के प्रोफेसर बने। इसके उपरांत वे मास्को में विदेशी भाषा  प्रकाशन गृह (Foreign Language Publication House ) में अनुवादक के रूप में  कार्यरत रहे। उन्होंने करीब 24  रूसी किताबें का हिंदी में रूपांतर किया।   उन्होंने नयी कहानियां नामक पात्रिका का सम्पादन किया। वे प्रगतिशील लेखक  संघ और अफ्रो-एशियायी लेखक संघ (Afro -Asian Writers Association ) के  मेंबर रहे। वे कुछ साल साहित्य अकादमी के कार्यकारी समीति के सदस्य रहे।  भीष्म साहनी को हिन्दी साहित्य में प्रेमचंद की परंपरा का अग्रणी लेखक माना  जाता है। उनके काम में मानवीय मूल्यों की बड़ी जगह रही है और वामपंथी  विचारधारा के साथ जुड़े रहे । आपाधापी और उठापटक के युग में भीष्म साहनी का  व्यक्तित्व बिल्कुल अलग था। भीष्म साहनी हिन्दी फ़िल्मों के जाने माने अभिनेता बलराज साहनी के छोटे भाई थे। उन्हें १९७५ में तमस के लिए साहित्य  अकादमी पुरस्कार, १९७५ में शिरोमणि लेखक अवार्ड (पंजाब सरकार), १९८० में  एफ्रो एशियन राइटर्स असोसिएशन का लोटस अवार्ड, १९८३ में सोवियत लैंड नेहरू  अवार्ड तथा १९९८ में भारत सरकार के पद्मभूषण अलंकरण से विभूषित किया गया।   उनकी पुस्तक “तमस” पर आधारित TV serial अत्यंत लोकप्रिय और सराहनीय रहा.

Manto was incorrigible!

Nothing could make him stop writing about the world as he saw it for as long as he lived. Not six court cases of obscenity, not the partition of his beloved nation and the difficult decision to move to Pakistan, not the abject poverty that drove him to near homelessness, not the bid of well-wishers to admit him to a mental asylum (meant to cure alcoholism). He lived till he wrote and then when he was told he couldn’t write anymore, he died.

What he wrote about were taboo subjects, how he wrote them was taboo too. He was rebuked and ostracised but he continued imbuing all his characters-  the pimps, prostitutes, lunatics, free spirited women- with the very same dignity that was denied to him.

उर्दू लेखक, सआदत हसन मंटो (11 मई 1912 – 18 जनवरी 1955) अपने बेबाक लेखन  के लिए जाने गए. कहानियों में अश्लीलता के आरोप  मंटो  पर लगे और उन्हें छह  बार अदालत जाना पड़ा था, लेकिन ये आरोप कभी सिद्ध नहीं हुए.  वे अपनी लघु कथाओं, बू, खोल दो, ठंडा गोश्त और चर्चित टोबा टेकसिंह के लिए  प्रसिद्ध हुए।कहानीकार होने के साथ-साथ मंटो फिल्म और रेडिया पटकथा लेखक और  पत्रकार भी थे।   सिर्फ इक्कीस साल के लेखन में, उन्होंने बाइस लघु कथा संग्रह, एक उपन्यास,  रेडियो नाटक के पांच संग्रह, रचनाओं के तीन संग्रह और व्यक्तिगत रेखाचित्र  के दो संग्रह प्रकाशित कर डाले

What happens when a Samvadiya gets too  close to the message and its source and is unable to perform his duties.

Well known writer Phanishwar Nath Renu’s stories were set in rural India  and carried in them the fragrance of village life, the lyricality of  language and at the same time the burden of unsaid nuances that crept in  from class and caste divides. He didn’t weigh his narrative down with  judgemental statements, instead he sketched the scene with words,  filling it with many layered complexities and let you decide for  yourself what you make of it.

Khwaja Ahmad Abbas was the “genius” writer behind most of Raj Kapoor’s  superhit (and on one occasion flop) films- Awaara, Shri 420, Ram Teri  Ganga Maili and Mera Naam Joker. However these came later. K.A Abbas had  already proved his mettle as a writer with Shantaram’s ‘Dr. Kotnis ki  Amar Kahani’ and Chetan Anand’s ‘Neecha Nagar’. He helped “strugglers”  like Dev Anand and later Amitabh Bachchan. His stories were often  considered not “literary” enough but he stood steadfast in his belief  about telling the stories of everyday people in language that was  theirs.

100 episodes!

I started StoryJam as a lockdown project, sending stories to my family and a couple of friends. It all seems a lifetime away now. I assumed I would either run out of stories or I would get busy with “real” work once the lockdown was over. What I didn’t realize was that the mild panic of not finding the “right” story, the late night recordings to avoid street noises (and pausing every time the dog barked, the ambulance screamed or the night watchman struck his lathi), the early morning edits before the household “rush-hour”, would all become part of my weekly routine. Once the episode was uploaded I felt euphoric, but only for 24 hours, then the cycle started again.

Like a resilient creeper, the rest of my life- personal and professional- has grown along and around StoryJam, embracing my mad little project completely. Who do I  thank for this? The universe? Covid 19 (Eeeks!)

I certainly know I want to thank you, dear listener, for indulging me, despite your own demanding schedules and busy lives.

अज्ञेय का जीवन परिचय:सच्चिदानंद हीरानंद वात्स्यायन , उपनाम -'अज्ञेय'  कथा-साहित्य के स्तम्भ माने गए हैं। उनका लेखन बहुत विविध था और वे कवि,  शैलीकार,ललित-निबन्धकार, सम्पादक और अध्यापक के रूप में जाने गए. अज्ञेय  प्रयोगवाद एवं नई कविता को साहित्य जगत में लाने वाले कवि कहलाते हैं।   बहुआयामी व्यक्तित्व के प्रखर कवि होने के साथ-साथ वे एक बेहतरीन  फोटोग्राफर और  पर्यटक भी थे।1964 में आँगन के पार द्वार पर उन्हें साहित्य  अकादमी का पुरस्कार प्राप्त हुआ और 1978 में कितनी नावों में कितनी बार पर  भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार।

उनके पिता पुरातत्व विभाग के लिए काम करते थे और उनका जन्म 7 मार्च 1911 को  उत्तर प्रदेश के कसया, पुरातत्व-खुदाई शिविर में हुआ।उनका बचपन पिता के  कार्य के कारण अलग अलग जगहों पर बीता- लखनऊ, कश्मीर, बिहार और मद्रास में  बीता। बी.एससी. करके अंग्रेजी में एम.ए. करते समय भारत के स्वतंत्रता  आंदोलन में क्रांतिकारी गुट से से जुड़कर बम बनाते हुए पकड़े गये लेकिन  फरार हो गए। सन्1930 ई. के अन्त में पकड़ लिये गये। 1930 से 1936 तक उनके  दिन जेलों में कटे। 1936-37 में अज्ञेय ने सैनिक और विशाल भारत नामक  पत्रिकाओं का संपादन किया। 1943 से 1946 तक ब्रिटिश सेना में भी रहे; इसके  बाद इलाहाबाद से 'प्रतीक' नामक पत्रिका निकाली और ऑल इंडिया रेडियो में  नौकरी करने लगे। कैलिफोर्निया विश्वविद्यालय और जोधपुर विश्वविद्यालय तक  में अध्यापन भी किया। दिल्ली लौट 'दिनमान' साप्ताहिक, नवभारत टाइम्स,  अंग्रेजी पत्र वाक् और एवरीमैंस जैसी प्रसिद्ध पत्र-पत्रिकाओं का संपादन  अज्ञेय जी ने किया। 1980 में उन्होंने 'वत्सलनिधि' नामक एक न्यास की  स्थापना की जिसका उद्देश्य साहित्य और संस्कृति के क्षेत्र में कार्य करना  था। दिल्ली में ही 4 अप्रैल 1987 को उनकी मृत्यु हुई।

Sachchidananda Hirananda Vatsyayan, better known by his nom de plume  Agyeya,  held a prominent presence in the world of Hindi literature. It  is widely believed that he brought experimentalism to Hindi poetry.  Though long before he was known for his poetry, he had started writing  short stories and novels. As a young man he contributed to a magazine  edited by Munshi Premchand. In fact there is an interesting anecdote  about his pen name, Agyeya. As a freedom fighter young Sachchidanand was  imprisoned. While in jail he used to send his short stories to well  known writer, Jainendra. Since his name could not be used, Jainendra  passed on his articles to Munshi Premchand saying that the writer’s name  was ‘Agyeya’ meaning unknowable.

Love, by any other name would be just as controversial…at least in India. Here’s Parsai ji’s take on “love marriage”- that much desired “happy ending” on the big screen and that much hush-hushed occurrence in real world of the GIS (Great Indian Samaaj)

Known as Walter Scott of Hindi literature, Vrindavanlal Verma was drawn  to historical narratives from early on in life. A proud Bundelkhandi, his novel ‘Jhansi ki Rani’ is one of his best known works. This was not a  work of fiction, at least not entirely. Vrindavanlal Verma was the  great great grandson of Rani Laxmi Bai and grew up listening to his  great grandmother’s stories about the Rani, who she had spent a lot of  time with. Today’s story however is not set in history. This is when he  strayed from his usual and came up with a witty, light humorous piece.  In fact, “Mendhaki ka Byah” is still a “thing”. If you don’t believe me  just google it!

Amritlal Nagar's flair for radio writing is quite apparent in the story - Haji Kulfiwala, where he writes the narration in the style of a traditional kissago.

Amritlal Nagar received formal education until highschool but taught himself history, sociology, theology etc. He was a polyglot fluent in Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi and Bangla. His writing was just as varied as his intellectual interests. He wrote novels, short stories, children’s literature, memoirs, plays, screenplays etc. Often called the “real heir” to Premchand, he worked many jobs including as a radio producer with Akashvani Lucknow.

When I began to look for more information about the writer, Yashpal. I  was astounded. What I found out could be a whole episode in itself.  Yashpal could be the hero of an action packed thriller! His life story  was one of stealth attacks, days spent as a fugitive, betrayal by  friends, prison time, shoot-outs and a romance that withstood the test  of time. And then he gave it all up and settled down to a writer’s life.

That Premchand was a writer of immense talent and depth is evident from the variety of genres his work straddled. He wrote novels, short stories, plays, essays, biographies, children’s books. He even experimented with form by writing fiction as letters. His translations spanned works of literary giants- Leo Tolstoy to Oscar Wilde to Jawahar Lal Nehru to Saadi Shirazi. He even went to Bombay for a year to try his luck in Cinema. There he wrote one film Mill Mazdoor, which was promptly banned by the British. Bombay wasn’t for him in any case, he said and came back home to Benaras.

हिंदी साहित्य में प्रेमचंद जैसा और कोई नहीं . उनकी क़लम ने हर विधा में  सृजन किया और ये कहना कठिन है की उनकी कहानियां बेहतर हैं या उनके उपन्यास,  उनके लिखे लेख ज़्यादा गहरे हैं या उनके द्वारा अनुदित दूसरी भाषाओँ की  किताबें. आज उनका लिखा एक मज़ेदार व्यंग- खट्टा मीठा और थोड़ा सा तीखा

मुंशी प्रेमचंद का जीवन परिचय : धनपत राय श्रीवास्तव जिन्हे साहित्य प्रेमी प्रेमचंद के नाम से जाने जाते  हैं,  हिन्दी और उर्दू के शायद सबसे अधिक  लोकप्रिय रचनाकार हैं । उन्होंने  सेवासदन, प्रेमाश्रम, रंगभूमि, निर्मला, गबन, कर्मभूमि, गोदान आदि लगभग  डेढ़ दर्जन उपन्यास तथा कफन, पूस की रात, पंच परमेश्वर, बड़े घर की बेटी,  बूढ़ी काकी, दो बैलों की कथा आदि तीन सौ से अधिक कहानियाँ लिखीं। उनके  उपन्यास सुर कथाएं हिन्दी तथा उर्दू दोनों भाषाओं में प्रकाशित हुईं। अपने  दौर की सभी प्रमुख उर्दू और हिन्दी पत्रिकाओं जमाना, सरस्वती, माधुरी,  मर्यादा, चाँद, सुधा आदि में भी उन्होंने लिखा।वे हिन्दी समाचार पत्र जागरण  तथा साहित्यिक पत्रिका हंस के संपादक और प्रकाशक भी रहे। इसके लिए  उन्होंने सरस्वती प्रेस खरीदा जो बाद में घाटे में रहा और बन्द करना पड़ा।  प्रेमचंद फिल्मों की पटकथा लिखने मुंबई भी गए  और लगभग तीन वर्ष तक रहे। वे  जीवन के अंतिम दिनों तक वे साहित्य सृजन में लगे रहे।

We all like to root for the underdog- in movies!

In real life it gets a little complicated and awkward, like it does for the narrator in Agyeya’s story. Will all that pent up justified anger lead to a free-for-all, or will it go flat after a while, like soapsuds?

Sachchidananda Hirananda Vatsyayan, better known by his nom de plume  Agyeya,  held a prominent presence in the world of Hindi literature. It  is widely believed that he brought experimentalism to Hindi poetry.  Though long before he was known for his poetry, he had started writing  short stories and novels. As a young man he contributed to a magazine  edited by Munshi Premchand. In fact there is an interesting anecdote  about his pen name, Agyeya. As a freedom fighter young Sachchidanand was  imprisoned. While in jail he used to send his short stories to well  known writer, Jainendra. Since his name could not be used, Jainendra  passed on his articles to Munshi Premchand saying that the writer’s name  was ‘Agyeya’ meaning unknowable.

Khushwant Singh was an author, lawyer, diplomat, journalist and politician…but most importantly he was irreverent in all these avatars. His ready wit, magnanimity and his ability to have an “equal malice towards one and all”, were his unique qualities. I was lucky to meet and film him many years ago for Penguin Books India, for the launch of his book (which was also to be his last). I have many fond memories of chats with him at his home in Sujan Singh Park. When I met Khushwant Singh he was in his mid 90’s but his mind was sharp as an arrow. He was generous with food, libations, shers, philosophy and most of all his humour. The last time I met him, he kissed my hand and guffawed, “Now you can go tell everyone that I am a dirty old man.”

“It’s our little secret.” I said and he laughed for a long time.

Vijaydan Detha,popularly known as Bijji,  lived and wrote in his tiny village of Borunda and from that little corner of Rajasthan, he rose to be a name to be reckoned with internationally. He was the recipient of several awards including the Padma Shri, Sahitya Akademi Puruskar, Sahitya Chudamani.

His stories carry the flavour of his land, is rich with its idioms and myths and yet his work speaks of the eternal human condition, which has not changed and never will.

A short story, originally written in  Dari by Afghan novelist, short  story writer, journalist, and scholar, Rahnaward Zaryab.   A poignant story about growing up, made more so by the fact that it  comes at a time when the life of a child in Afghanistan is everything a  child's life should not be- uncertain, violent, aching with personal  losses. Here's hoping that through all the rise of smoke and rubble, the  flame of imagination and hope will resurface, more resilient, shining  brighter!

Ahmad Nadeem Qasim wrote with humanism that is reminiscent of Premchand. Post partition Qasim remained in Pakistan and kept the flag of Progressive Writers Movement flying high. Gulzar called him his guru and mentor.

Ismat Chughtai’s writing, especially her short stories, are full of sharp unapologetic observations about the politics of the household as well as of society at large. Her work shows unbiased compassion and above all humor like none other. Today a short story that Ismat Chughtai probably wrote for children, but one that alleviates adults from mundane dullness of everyday life.
