Episode 3 - Interview with Nicole Hilburn: Paediatric Physiotherapist, Neurodevelopmental Specialist & MAES Therapist
SUMMARY
In this podcast I speak with Dr Nicole Hilburn, a South African trained paediatric physiotherapist, researcher and lecturer now based in the United Kingdom.
We talk about her academic background and how it has helped inform her clinical practice. We also go into some depth about her main specialisation in paediatrics, MAES Therapy, an approach to physiotherapy for children with neurodevelopment movement disorders developed by Jean-Pierre Maes. Nicole discusses her views on where technology is beginning to improve evidence-based research into what therapies may work and which are less effective, and gives parents some tips about how to optimise the interventions they are able to access for their children.
____________
BIO
Prior to moving to the UK, where Nicole is working as an Extended Scope Physiotherapist in the NHS, she had her own paediatric physiotherapy clinic in Johannesburg, South Africa, the highly regarded Physio in the Parks. She has been a lecturer in paediatrics at the University of the Witwatersrand, which is also where she obtained her PhD. Nicole is passionate about her academic work, and her PhD thesis established a new standardised developmental screening tool (suitable for use in a developing country) to screen for neurodevelopmental delays especially with children who had HIV positive mothers, and ascertain the need for further assessment or referral to rehabilitation services for them.
She received her undergraduate training in physiotherapy at the University of Cape Town and has subsequently been trained in the NDT and MAES therapy.

Episode 1 - Jessica Tuohy - Early Intervention and Physiotherapy
This is the first of what I hope will be a series of conversations with people who play an important role in helping to support Lily's development. The aim is to make interviews informative and interesting, and to try to answer the types of questions I as a parent often find myself asking. My guest in this episode is Jessica Tuohy, Clinical Director at SPOT, an interdisciplinary therapy centre for children in Hong Kong. Regularly described as the best paediatric physiotherapist in Hong Kong, parents value Jessica's expertise, and also her fun, enthusiastic and child-centred approach. She trained in Adelaide, Australia, at the Women's and Children's Hospital, where she specialised in Paediatrics.
The transcript of this interview is available on the SuperLily Blog accessible by following THIS LINK.
