active-duty military spouse and a trusted authority in this specialized field,
she has dedicated over a decade to supporting military and veteran families in
navigating the intricate landscape of military fee assistance programs and
addressing their distinctive requirements.
Motivated
by a profound passion and a wealth of experience, Kayla recognized the pressing
need for tailored solutions within the community. Drawing upon her extensive
knowledge and deep-rooted connections in the military circle, she spearheaded
the creation of Operation Child Care—a groundbreaking initiative that marked
the inception of the first-of-its-kind nanny referral agency and military child
care search exclusive to the military community.

Meet Hilary Laxson: A Passionate Advocate for Military Children with Dyslexia
Hilary Laxson has been an active member of the military community since 2000 and a Coast Guard spouse for 12 years. She holds a BSBA in Finance from the University of Denver and a graduate-level paralegal degree from the University of San Diego. Recently, she obtained a Special Education Law certificate from the University of San Diego. Her personal experience with her child's severe dyslexia and learning disabilities has led her to become a passionate advocate for dyslexia education and advocacy.
Hilary's family has been part of the Coronado community since the 1980s and she moved there after college. As a Coast Guard family member, they lived in California, Georgia, and Hawaii. Hilary became involved in dyslexia advocacy and activism after her family was relocated to Georgia in 2017 due to military orders.
Hilary is a volunteer for various organizations, including Decoding Dyslexia Military for Georgia, Decoding Dyslexia Georgia, Exceptional Family Members of the Military, and Seal Kids. She is dedicated to advocating for active-duty families in around the globe and has attended the last four "Say Dyslexia Day" events at the Georgia State Capitol to help raise awareness about dyslexia in the state.
Hilary runs a Facebook parent support group called Warrior Parents of Dyslexics and Dodea Dyslexia Parent IEP 504 Support. This group offers support to active-duty military parents across the United States who need help navigating the world of dyslexia.
She provides Special Education advocacy and consultation to Active-Duty Military and Retired Families in the USA and DODEA from her business The Dyslexia Life. She currently lives in Atlanta where her daughter attends a dyslexia school.

In an eral long before the internet, two Navy Chiefs Abe and Polly Ortiz embarked on an extraordinary journey fraught with challenges as they navigated the uncharted waters of parenting a special needs child. Their story is a testament to resilience, resourcefulness, and unwavering dedication.Their journey began when Jake was diagnosed with a complex set of special needs.. They were in shock and there were no immediate answers or online support groups to turn to. Abe and Polly were faced with the daunting task of not only understanding their son's condition but also charting a path forward without readily available resources. The military infrastructure at that time did not offer a comprehensive support system. With Google being in the distant future Polly spent her time making calls, and connecting the traditional way,Both Abe and Polly retired after serving over 44 years in the service. Andy Nichols is a retired Navy SEAL Master Chief of 26 years. “I joined in 1985, right after high school,” he said. “I didn’t start out as a SEAL. I started out as a Naval Aircrewman.”
Like his dad, Andy was an “aviation buff” and was fascinated by military history. After high school, he wanted to pursue a career that would feed his passion for aircraft. “What job is going to let me fly?” Andy asked himself. “That’s going to be my job.”
Andy was on the United States Off Road team in 1996 and competed in International Six Days, the world’s largest off-road motorcycle competition. Joining the Marines, she decided not to tell her parents. Serving for 10 years as a single active-duty parent she explains the challenges of leaving your child in the care of others. After serving her country Keisha continues to advocate for female transitioning service members through the Foundation for Women Warriors.
