Stop Your POPs
Have you identified the scary monsters that are hiding deep within your brain?
In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie reflect on Pathways of the Past (POPs). They are automatic and often problematic, stress response mechanisms built upon past experiences ingrained within our brains, which they had already talked about with Annie Hopper in an episode that was part of their Brain Series. As humans, we learn from significant emotional events that happen to us, and if they are negative, our brains are wired to protect us from similar events in the future. However, sometimes these lie behind habitual patterns: in the thoughts, emotions, or behaviors that occur when we’re under a triggering or stressful situation and we may not even notice. Susan and CrisMarie discuss how to identify these POPs, share some steps to take to unhook yourself from them and find new healthier ways to deal with conflict situations.

What Could Be Undermining Your Team’s Effectiveness - YOU
Have you ever said: “This meeting could have been an email”? Okay, well, us too, and there’s nothing more frustrating than meetings that don’t have a clear purpose. In this Beauty of Conflict episode, Susan and CrisMarie discuss work meetings and what to do to make them as effective as possible. They start the conversation by introducing an example of a meeting model companies can adopt. They break down the purpose and characteristics of the four types of meetings of the model: a daily huddle, a weekly tactical, a monthly strategic, and a quarterly offsite. However, it doesn’t just take structure to make each meeting work. Every team member has to understand their strengths and how they can improve or undermine a specific type of meeting, knowing how to participate and what to bring into it. They provide advice to understand teammates, avoid interpersonal clashes, and have clarity in meetings.

Interview with Irene Lyon
The nervous system is surprisingly far-reaching within us. In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie are happy to be joined by Irene Lyon, a nervous system expert, to talk about how working with the nervous system can transform trauma to heal one’s body and mind.
Humans, unlike other animals, have a higher brain that has the ability to ignore signals caused by stressful situations or events, but that doesn’t mean they never occurred. Just like built-up pressure within a sealed container, unresolved issues can explode and express themselves through symptoms or even illness in our bodies. To explain how to address this, Irene starts by breaking down the nervous system into smaller systems and talks about their function in our daily lives and how they respond to threatening situations. She presents different examples to illustrate why upbringing plays a pivotal role in the way we deal with conflict, providing introspective and somatic alternatives that anyone can understand.

What is going on inside both hemispheres of your brain?
In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie are joined by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor to discuss her newest book, Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life. As you might remember from High School biology classes, the human brain has two hemispheres, with an emotional system and a thinking system in each one. Dr. Jill breaks down each character and how they reflect on the way we feel and think. Are You Abdicating or Owning Your Part In The Systems You Are In?
Systemic thinking can be applied to anything in life, because in the end: we are all connected. In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie discuss how system thinking is related to everything in life: work, home, and relationships. There is a common thought that if the “weakest link” is removed from the equation, the problem will be solved, but we forget that we are all part of the same moving engine. Being able to see the bigger picture and recognizing the distinctions among things is an awareness level that can be trained. Groups are made up of individuals, and recognizing the individuals within the system is equally as valuable as recognizing the group.

How Are You At Handling Change
In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, CrisMarie and Susan discuss different ways to handle change and the several ways it can appear. Transition is a very essential part of change, and we often don’t pay attention to it. They also mention the grieving part of it, through various experiences they have lived, and bring up how we tend to be unaware of this element of change. In life, some things end, but others remain; and this is also one of the elements we need to be aware of. People usually think that they’re alone during changes, but the truth is that they are not. We are here for you if you’re experiencing change.
Please join us during Find your Mojo in Montana; it’s the perfect time to reconnect with yourself and see new ways of dealing with change!

Lessons From The Horses
Equus work is a beautiful way to discover many things from oneself. In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, CrisMarie interviews Susan as she delves deep into the lessons she has learned from the horses in Equus work and why she enjoys doing this type of coaching so much. They relate their experiences with clients and horses to Jill Bolte Taylor’s characters and divisions of the brain. Having one-degree changes in the way we usually do things will ultimately lead us down another path, and as with horses, it is incredibly important to be in the present. The process of integrating and bringing yourself whole can be done in several ways, and Susan’s favorite is through Equus's work. Tune in to this episode, and we hope we can see you soon in a Find Your Mojo or Equus coaching session!

Do you want Passion, Intimacy and Connection?
Whatever happens at work may be affecting your relationships at home.
This episode of the Beauty of Conflict describes how the emotions built up in other environments have an effect at home with your partner. Susan and CrisMarie have been coaching CEOs and leaders, and there is always a common thread: they think their emotions don’t show or affect them. Well, they do. And they may take a toll on your personal relationships. Being aware of one’s own triggers, emotions, and patterns is a whole journey that starts with little steps. The two of them discuss this in-depth in the Executive Skill No One Talks About episode, published earlier this month. Your partner may be your support system, and it is essential that both have other ways to deregulate their feelings rather than each other.
We hope this episode is valuable for you and you can identify your triggers for a healthier relationship.

Confidence, Confidence, Confidence
This episode of The Beauty of Conflict was inspired by a LinkedIn post written by a colleague of Susan and CrisMarie, who explained that in leadership, confidence is being so self-aware of who one really is and our competencies. This episode is our take on confidence! For us, being confident implies a strong connection between two things: body and mind. In her work with horses, Susan recognized that they are unaware of what’s happening in the human head; they only read the physical reactions of their bodies. We know that it’s easy to say “build your confidence” but hard to actually do it, so we hope this episode was full of tips you can use when you feel uneasy and uncomfortable.

The Executive Skill Nobody Talks About
In this episode of The Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie chat about how important it is for people to know how to receive feedback in a good way from their teammates and employees. Everyone can learn to cultivate how they receive feedback, it’s not a set-in-stone kind of thing. Feedback is just how other people see a specific topic or situation; as a skill, one can always work to improve it. They also share what an emotional trigger is and how beneficial it is to learn how to handle them, for which they give tools you can use. There are three emotional triggers that Susan and CrisMarie talk about in-depth during the conversation: identity, truth, and relationship triggers.

High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out
In this episode of The Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie discuss “High Conflict - Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out”, a book by Amanda Ripley. In high conflict, people believe they’re righteous, make negative assumptions about those with different positions, and believe that the only acceptable solution is a total victory. It’s not healthy and there are no winners. After having read the book, Susan talks with CrisMarie about how it navigates different stories and characters to explore high conflict and tools to get out of it like investigating the conflict’s understory, avoiding binary situations, finding common ground, and marginalizing fire starters.

Above and Below The Line
Susan and CrisMarie discuss how many people avoid using their emotions at work in this episode of The Beauty of Conflict. Nobody taught anyone how to deal with emotions, especially during formative years like high school or college. Managing emotions is a life-long process because it is also a journey of self-discovery. CrisMarie and Susan divide this topic of understanding behaviors through a fine line: above it for the response, below it for reacting. Being aware of which behaviors we always go into is fundamental to personal and professional growth.

There is a price to pay and a pain to be felt when it comes to objectification.

Objectification is the process of dehumanizing someone, and turning them into a material object, or as close as it can get. It happens with a lot of professions, especially parents and doctors, and when it comes to relationships, it’s a double-way street. Listen to this episode and see if you are going through this process too; we hope our thoughts help you!

The Paradox of Control
Almost everyone is looking to have control, even just a slightly tiny bit. In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie discuss the Paradox of Control and how everyone has felt the need to have some over someone, something, or a situation. These control issues usually arise from a place of uncertainty, and it is natural for people to want to know the outcome. The paradox is pretty simple: one can let go of control if there’s a structure to support it. Structures are a way of control, but they can be drowning when taken to the extreme.
We hope you find the paradox useful for your day-to-day activities!

Another key element is the recognition of power and privilege.
CrisMarie and Susan dissect this topic and give heartfelt advice to enhance your relationships.

The Beauty of Conflict Tools - 5-5-5
Today we are sharing a specific tool for conflict with you on the podcast.
It’s called a 5-5-5.
This is a tool you can use when you and someone else have very different ideas and styles about something.
This something could be in the workplace- the way you approach a project, your styles of working, or something in your personal relationship around money, sex, kids, vacation.
Whatever the something is that causes recurring conflict, this easy, 15 minute tool is one that can help you both get space to dive into what you feel, knowing the other person will be listening.
If you have any recurring conflicts in your life, we encourage you to listen to this short episode where we explain the 5-5-5 and how you can apply it in your life.
We use this and have seen its success personally and in those we coach, we can’t wait for it to enhance your conversations too.

How to be ME in a WE
This week’s podcast episode is all about things you can use in your own personal relationships to grow them closer to where you want them to be, starting today!
We are going to dive into some of what we share in our new book The Beauty of Conflict for Couples so you can begin thinking about these ideas and tools in your own relationship.
One thing we focus on is this idea that we all begin thinking relationships will be perfect- we will always be close, it will always be loving, it will fill our needs.
And then we get into relationships and they don’t always behave in a way we expected in our minds. This can show up in big and small ways, from the way they put on the toilet paper roll to how they interact with our families.
Our work with this has never been about making things smooth, we’re not fixing at a surface level, but learning how you can not lose yourself in your relationship, but be yourself and be in a healthy relationship.
It’s about how to be the ME in a WE.
So today we’re sharing our insights around this on the show and hope you will take away some thoughts or actions you can start using in your own relationship.

React Versus Respond
How often do you just react to something?
Think about the last conflict you experienced- did you react to the situation or respond to it?
This is something most of us don’t question or pay attention to often, but it’s important in understanding just why we act the way we do sometimes.
Often what makes us uncomfortable in conflict is actually our own reaction (or not knowing how to react) or witnessing someone else’s reaction and figuring out how to respond.
This is such a big topic we felt it was really important we address the difference between reacting and responding on the podcast and give you some ways you can identify your choice point between the two.
Beyond this, we’re breaking down some actual facts about what’s happening to you when you are reacting (did you know your IQ drops 10 to 15 points when your body is getting ready to react?!) and some coping styles to adjust your behavior.
We really think you’ll resonate with this episode (let’s be honest, we’ve all reacted in a way we wish we hadn’t before).
