ESG on Steroids!? ISSB standards are coming to Canada -- Season 2 Episode 15 -- Conversation with Deidra Garyk
The topic of this episode is the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the newly released IFRS S1-sustainability and IFRS S2-climate-related financial disclosure standards that Canada is determined to implement. Canada has created a Canadian Sustainability Standards Board to work in lockstep with the ISSB and is currently reviewing the standards for implementation. Some have called these sustainability standards ESG on steroids. My guest is Deidra Garyk, energy advocate, contributor to Energy Now, and Manager, ESG and Sustainability at energy services company Trican.

Canada's Energy Transition Challenges -- Season 2 Episode 14 -- Conversation with Parker Gallant
The Energy Transition in Canada faces a number of different challenges, particularly the reliability and affordability of provincial grids when governments pledge to electrify everything. Even though the province of Ontario generates over 90% of its electricity from zero or low carbon sources, the push to retire natural gas power plants and resistance to building more reliable power generation in favour of installing more unreliable wind and solar power, while at the same time of increasing demand on the grid, has created a situation of potential brown outs and requests for voluntary demand constriction. Joining Dr. Tammy Nemeth in a discussion about the challenges of Ontario and Canada's energy transition is Parker Gallant. Parker is a retired banker who has devoted a significant amount of time of his retirement to researching and analysing the energy sector -- production, transmission, and distribution of energy in Ontario. You can find his writings on a number of different energy related topics at his blog: https://parkergallantenergyperspectivesblog.wordpress.com/

Could Quebec Run Out of Energy? -- Season 2 Episode 12 -- Conversation with David Boudeweel
Most Canadians don’t know or understand very much about the energy situation in Quebec. If asked, many would probably remark on Quebec’s incredible hydro electric power. Some know that Quebec exports a great deal of electricity to nearby provinces and the United States. Indeed, the Government of Quebec’s green economy plan states it will continue and maybe even increase those exports to become the “battery” of northeastern America. Some, however, have started to question whether that is possible. Recently, David Boudeweel wrote a piece asking the question, “Could Quebec Run Out of Energy?” Today, I’m pleased to welcome Public Affairs Consultant David Boudeweel to the podcast to discuss Quebec’s energy situation.

The hydrocarbon and resource industries in Canada – notably in Alberta and Saskatchewan—have undergone tremendous changes over the past 15 years. There’s been environmental activism pushing governments to block pipelines and other infrastructure; there’s been the boom and bust of prices; there’s been the starving of investment; there’s also been the creeping jurisdictional overreach of Ottawa. Brian Zinchuk has covered it all – AND—he’s reported how it’s affected the people working in this strategic industry.
Brian joined Pipeline News, Saskatchewan’s monthly petroleum newspaper in 2008, serving as journalist and editor until Covid brought it to an end. In 2021, he began his own online publishing venture – Pipeline Online – covering all energy related news of Saskatchewan. A Nemeth Report Special -- Designed to Kill the Fossil Fuel Industry: The IFRS Global Baseline ESG Standards
Welcome to a Nemeth Report special. Canada is about to sign onto new emissions reporting standards that are designed to kill the fossil fuel industry. The International Financial Reporting Standards Foundation (IFRS) has developed a new global baseline sustainability and climate related financial disclosure Standard, and Canada has committed to supporting this new Standard. I’ve written a new report about this extremely important issue that will have profound implications for every business in Canada, but which, as currently written, demonizes greenhouse gas emissions through the accounting standards’ metrics. I explain in this report how pernicious this Standard is, and how it will compromise the finances and operations of hydrocarbon companies, and any industry that utilizes hydrocarbons.
In this Special Report, I share with you the Executive Summary from my report, Counting Carbon Molecules, which is available on the podcast website, The Nemeth Report.com. Another summary of the report is in my recent op-ed in the Financial Post, "Net-Zero? New Standard Aims for Absolute-Zero Emissions."
I hope you will enjoy this short episode.
