A recentl became friends through golf, with a guy who served in the miltary and was in a specialised hiugh mechanised unit. These units were typically called in to blow things up and flatten areas for infantry men. Anthony was the communications guy but still had to be geared up with an m4, side arm and enough ammo to contribute to a potential threat. I'm diving way more into ammunition than I ever thought I would and became very interested in popular handgun cartridges. I LOVE having tactical gear everywhere for my everyday lifestyle now! An aspect of shooting that many (including me prior to this) don't even consider is the movement we will have naturally as we hold a pistol and pull the trigger. We are not robots, or machines, we are human beings with a pulse so it is natural for us to have a slight movement that translates into a dispersion of shots that increases the further away from the target we are.  Example: Shooting at 3 feet the dispersion of shots is going to be pretty tight, but the same movement from 25 feet will translate into a much bigger dispersion of shots.  Thanks for listening,  Matthew

It pains me to say this but some of the biggest and best gun belt brands are manufacturing in China, and the quality is undoubtably of a super high standard. Now I get it, made in America is a great marketing strategy and a great strategy overall but it doesn't always mean the quality is high. In fact think about your iPhone and where that is made? Its made in China because it is made extremely well there. The same is said for nylon products, and gun belts; with the right manufacturer in China you can get an unbelievably high quality nylon gun belt construction. And that is just what the likes of Kore Essentials and Nexbelt have done, and it is what we have done too.  I will always support those who make in America and will never bash them because it is a great thing, I just believe that the masses of folks that need a gun belt for concealed carry or everyday work use can't afford a $70-$100 belt. When I was first buying ammunition I got really lost in the whole type, caliber, and terminology so no doubt new gun owners are doing the same. As I have said in the past, it is important to know the parts of your guns or at least the major parts. I still don't know all the small pieces that make up a rifle, but I do know the basics.  The barrel, the bore are something to understand as it can be a serious issue if you try to use the wrong caliber for what the barrel is capable of handling. When learning about the barrel and bore you'll come across rifling so I touch on what that is exactly, but not much further as I do not know much more about it yet. There is almost a best of both worlds when it comes to shooting .223 or 5.56 ammo, its just not as widely known or used. Welcome .223 Wylde Chambers, which are a .223 chamber which exceeds the standard pressure amount a .223 can handle all the way up to the 5.56 pressure. After speakign with some ammunition experts I found out that there is actually a difference between a .223 rem and a 5.56 nato. I used to have approx. 90 to 150 rounds of .223 or 5.56 ammunition in my standard everyday load out. This was for range practice or for just incase sh*t went down. After speaking further with my firearms instructor Tim Owens of OSS Tactical I have now changed completely. Well I never thought so many people would be too concerned about how many rounds of ammunition you or I carry to the gun range for practice over lunch haha. Despite some of the hateful comments I enjoy the interactions and most peoples concern, help and advice. It made me seek further expert advice and talk about it on this podcast.  How much ammunition you take to the range has really boiled down to 2 things:  Cost Intentions Straight off the bat rifle ammunition is expensive, whether .223 or 5.56 - it is expensive as you go through it fast. Intentions; I am not anticipating an invasion over my lunch nor am I expecting a zombie apocalypse over lunch so I feel I don't need to be as prepared like a front line soldier. Most rifle pistol bags are equipped to have at least 150 rounds, and most hold more capacity. For example, our rifle bag in its smallest most compact size holds x4 30 or 45 round mags and more can be stored inside the internal pockets. The outside rifle ammo specific pockets hold what I just said so its more than enough for a range or tactical session. Being a Georgia resident, and owning guns I place a large emphasis on protecting my family and home. With that being said it is super important to understand and know the laws that surround the use of guns and protection. I chat briefly here as a series of videos that will cover in depth the castle doctrine and stand your ground. I was at the range doing some practice before me and my wife had lunch the other day, and I forgot my own targets so I had to buy targets from the store. They cost me $1 each!! I was shocked because I buy in bulk and they cost me approx. 7-11 cents. You can imagine how shocked I was handing over my credit card.  Anyway with that in mind I realized that having a gun, ammo and a safe is super important but having targets is also super helpful and depending on how you buy them can be expensive or cost effective.  Have fun, shooter ready.

It was super interesting to me to learn that more people are buying rifles, especially the AR15 platform thus leading to more rifle ammunition sales. This brings in some confusion for new folks as there are 2 very common types of rifle ammunition. These two are the 5.56x45mm and .223 Remington. The 5.56x45mm and .223 Remington are both intermediate rifle cartridges commonly used in military and civilian firearms. However, they have some differences: Chamber pressure: The 5.56mm NATO cartridge has a higher chamber pressure than .223 Remington. Ammunition dimensions: The 5.56mm NATO cartridge is slightly longer than the .223 Remington cartridge, and its case is also thicker. Ballistic performance: The 5.56mm NATO cartridge has a higher velocity and energy compared to the .223 Remington cartridge. Weapon compatibility: It is important to note that not all firearms chambered in .223 Remington can safely fire 5.56mm NATO ammunition. Before using 5.56mm NATO in a .223 Remington chamber, it is important to check with the manufacturer. In summary, the 5.56mm NATO cartridge is generally considered to be a more powerful round than the .223 Remington cartridge, but it is important to use the appropriate cartridge for your firearm to ensure safe and reliable operation.

As a new shooter, new gun owner or just someone who is looking to improve their abilities as a shooter. There is only so much dryfire you can do before you need the context of the environment and the tools to change. This change is real bullets coming out of a real gun going bang! Recoil and reality shooting is an essential part of improving your marksmanship. I have been in the gun belt nylon industry for a few years now and I have had a blast learning all about them. There was 1 single important result I got from using my Mantis Blackbeard and that was becoming more confident and competent with an AR15 in my hands. As a new gun owner I remember just holding a gun was intimidating so this training tool if anything gave me great confidence holding, and maneuvering my rifle. In our last podcast Tim at OSS Tactical mentioned how an AR15 was a great platform for home defense and so I wanted to share my take on that and also go a little into why it is a great choice for home defense. There are many other reasons why but I am sticking to only the reasons I know currently.  If you have any other reasons why or why not this is a great weapon of choice for home defense i would love to know more! The AR-15 rifle is one of the most popular firearms on the market today, with its lightweight and ergonomic design making it a great choice for home defense. This semi-automatic rifle is reliable and accurate, with low recoil allowing for quick and accurate follow-up shots if necessary. The AR-15 also has a high magazine capacity, allowing for more rounds to be available for defensive situations.

In this episode I talk with my firearms instructor and Expert Shooter Tim Owens who is the owner of OSS Tactical. Tim has a decades worth of knowledge having served in the military and taught as an instructor to many police departments in the US. To this day Tim gets on me about gun safety as you can never be too careful with a firearm. Tim also shares 1 rule that trumps all when you have a gun in your hand, because at the end of the day if it is in your hand then you are responsible for it. This podcast is full of knowledge bombs so tune in and enjoy! Gun safety refers to the rules and procedures that should be followed in order to prevent accidents or misuse of firearms. These rules are designed to help protect the user and those around them from injury or death. Some of the basic principles of gun safety include: 1) Always assume that a gun is loaded, even if you think it is not. 2) Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction, away from other people or objects that could be damaged or destroyed if the gun were to discharge. 3) Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. 4) Be sure of your target and what is beyond it. 5) Use appropriate safety equipment, such as ear and eye protection. 6) Store firearms and ammunition separately and securely, in a locked cabinet or safe. It is also important to familiarize yourself with the specific safety features and handling procedures of any firearm you use, and to follow all laws and regulations related to firearms.

So knowing just a little about motor skill learning would totally help you.  A motor skill is a function that involves specific movements of the body to perform a certain task. These tasks could include walking, running, or riding a bike. In order to perform this skill, the body's nervous system, muscles, and brain have to all work together. The goal of motor skill is to optimize the ability to perform the skill at the rate of success, precision, and to reduce the energy consumption required for performance. Performance is an act of executing a motor skill or task. Continuous practice of a specific motor skill will result in a greatly improved performance, which leads to motor learning. Motor learning is a relatively permanent change in the ability to perform a skill as a result of continuous practice or experience.

I honestly think that I would chose my AR15 when it comes to home defense. If it was the middle of the night and my wife and I activated our threat plan I am almost 100% confident I would be pulling my AR15 our of the gun safe to use.  Here are a some elements to consider if you would make the same choice, or if you are not sure what choice you would make.  An AR-15 is a popular choice for home defense for several reasons: Firepower: The AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle that can hold a large number of rounds in its magazine, giving the user more firepower than a handgun. Accuracy: The AR-15 is designed with a long barrel and a detachable stock, which makes it easy to aim and shoot accurately. Customizable: The AR-15 is a modular weapon, which means that it can be customized with different sights, grips, and accessories to suit the user's needs. Versatility: The AR-15 can be used for a variety of purposes, including home defense, hunting, and target shooting, making it a versatile option for those who want to own a firearm for multiple reasons. Familiarity: Some people may already be familiar with the AR-15 from previous hunting or shooting experience, which can make it easier to use in a home-defense situation. So if you are like me you own a gun for home defense and protecting your family. Although I also have ambitions to shoot competitively the main reason I started this whole deal was to protect my family from a threat. So here are some basics I have learned.  Home defense involves protecting yourself and your family from potential intruders or threats in your home. Some basic principles to consider when planning for home defense include: Knowing your layout: Familiarize yourself with the layout of your home, including the location of doors, windows, and potential entry points. Securing your home: Ensure that all doors and windows are properly locked and consider installing security features such as alarms or cameras. Having a plan: Develop a plan with your family for what to do in case of an emergency, such as a home invasion. Self-defense: Consider taking a self-defense class or training in the use of firearms for home defense. Always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts if something feels off. Once again I found myself in a conversation with a group of guys talking about rifles and there were way too many words of gun parts I did not know so I had to become much more familiar and knowledgeable with at least the most basic parts. Here they are: Barrel Handguard Bolt Carrier Group Lower Receiver Stock Pistol grip Trigger Magazine Sights or Optics.

I found it super helpful for industry conversations and to accelerate my understanding by learning the most common parts of a handgun/ pistol and I think every new gun owner should do the same.  An Overview of the Key Components of a Firearm" is a comprehensive guide to understanding the basic parts of a gun. Let me clear: I am not a professional shooter, nor am licensed to give professional advise and instruction. This information is my opinion alone.  Now up to hundreds of hours in dryfire practice and god knows how many hours in live-fire practice, I have loaded a magazine, my pistol and shot it a few times to say the least.  Here is a short step by step on how I load my started entry level 9mm pistol. I think you'll find it rather helpful if you are new to this.  If you have a gun you'll need a high quality, but normally priced gun belt. Loading and firing a pistol safely and effectively requires knowledge of the specific gun you are using, as well as proper technique and safety protocol. First, make sure your pistol is unloaded and pointed in a safe direction. Check the chamber, magazine, and any other areas where ammunition may be stored to ensure it is empty. Next, insert the magazine into the handle of the pistol and ensure it is securely seated. Some pistols will have a release button that must be pressed in order to insert the magazine. Next, pull back the slide (or barrel) to chamber a round of ammunition. Make sure your finger is off the trigger and the gun is pointed in a safe direction while doing this. To fire the pistol, grip the gun firmly with both hands, line up the sights on your target, and pull the trigger while keeping a steady aim. Some pistols will have a safety mechanism that must be disengaged before the gun can be fired. It's important to remember to keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot, and to always be aware of your surroundings. Always wear eye and ear protection when handling firearms and never point the gun at anything you are not prepared to shoot. When you are finished firing, always make sure the gun is unloaded and the magazine is removed before storing it. This is a brief overview of loading and firing a pistol, and it's always recommended to seek professional training and instruction before handling a firearm.

Let me be clear: I am no expert, I am not a professional shooter and this is not professional education, this information is my opinion only.  Shooting a pistol: Clearly I had mistakes, and probably still do as I'm no expert pistol shooter. However, my instructor found some problems with my stance and my grip. A few hours later and I had them straightened out with a much greater understanding of some common mistakes and helpful tips. Here they are! Improper grip: Not gripping the pistol firmly enough or using the wrong grip can affect accuracy and control. Flinching: Anticipating the recoil of the pistol can cause the shooter to flinch, which can negatively impact accuracy. Not using proper sight alignment: Aligning the sights properly is essential for accurate shooting. Jerking the trigger: Pulling the trigger too quickly or abruptly can affect accuracy and control. Breathing technique: Holding your breath or breathing incorrectly can cause movement of the gun and affect accuracy. Not controlling the trigger: Not maintaining steady pressure on the trigger can result in an unintentional discharge or an inaccurate shot. Not keeping your arm extended : Not keeping your arm extended or not keeping the arm in the same position while shooting can affect accuracy. Not maintaining a steady aim: Moving the pistol or not keeping the sights on target can cause shots to be off target. Not cleaning the gun: A dirty gun can malfunction and affect accuracy and safety. Not being familiar with the gun: Not being familiar with the gun's safety features, how it operates, and how to maintain it can affect performance and safety. Shop 2ND AMEN Tactical Gear Here.

To truly improve your shooting skills, you have to put in the time and effort to learn and master the fundamentals of shooting. This includes getting comfortable with your stance, grip, trigger squeeze, sight picture, and follow through. It also involves learning about recoil control, learning about windage and elevation, and understanding the different types of ammunition and their effects on your shooting accuracy. Recently I was asked at a local gun show how long our rifle scope held zero. And I didn't have a conclusive answer tbh. All I could say was months if you are using it and handling it with a few bumps and bangs, but if not and you are very careful it should lasts years.  Poor rifle scopes will lose zero simply after using them, which is not good. Holding zero refers to the ability of a rifle scope to maintain its point of aim, or the point where the crosshairs are aligned, after being adjusted and zeroed in. When a rifle scope is zeroed in, it is adjusted so that the point of impact, or where the bullet hits, matches the point of aim. Once a scope is zeroed in, it should hold zero and maintain that alignment, allowing the shooter to accurately aim at a target without the need for constant readjustment. If a scope does not hold zero, it means that the point of aim and point of impact are no longer aligned and the shooter will need to readjust the scope before taking a shot.

So I know what method I am going to be using long term but I will attempt to master the no tech version first. I imagine the learning is priceless so why the heck not ey! I did used to wonder why optics have risers, but then I did some research and experienced the real reason why. I did initially think that after I purchasing a sight or scope that I just install it and that's it, its done and wherever the dot or crosshair is pointing is what Im going to hit but it turns out that's not quite the case. Our first episode based on a request! So exciting. I understood somewhat this topic but it was interesting diving a little deeper in my research. I thought of a few different podcasts to cover the topic in much detail and today we'll start with some basics.  The main difference between first focal plane (FFP) and second focal plane (SFP) scopes is how the reticle size changes as the magnification is adjusted. In an FFP scope, the reticle size changes along with the magnification, so the size of the crosshairs relative to the target stays the same at all magnification levels. In an SFP scope, the reticle size stays the same at all magnification levels, so the size of the crosshairs relative to the target will change as the magnification is adjusted. When I was attempting to put on my rifle sling I almost smashed my equipment to pieces. My rifle did not have 2 attachment points, and I did not know what sling mount to go with, what was compatible and what exactly I needed to add to my rifle in order to have a two-point attachment sling. I was angry to say the least!  To install a 2-point rifle sling on your AR-15, you will need: A 2-point rifle sling Sling attachment points or mounting hardware, such as QD (quick detach) swivels or Paraclip connectors A wrench or pliers (if you are installing mounting hardware that requires tools) To install the sling: First, attach the sling attachment points or mounting hardware to the front and rear of the rifle. This will typically involve screwing the hardware into place or attaching it to a rail system. Next, thread the ends of the sling through the attachment points or hardware. This was driving me mad and in the end it would have been good to know just this little bit of information.  My rifle only had 1 attachment point situated on the rifle, which was at the buttstock. There was nothing else at the foreend or on the barrel so I found myself looking for additional parts.  Attaching a rifle sling to a rifle allows you to carry the rifle comfortably and conveniently, freeing up your hands for other tasks. There are several ways to attach a rifle sling, depending on the type of sling and the rifle itself. Most rifles have at least one attachment point on the buttstock and one on the fore-end of the rifle, which can be used to attach a two-point sling. Single-point and three-point slings only require a single attachment point on the buttstock. If your rifle does not have an attachment point at the fore-end, you will need to install one, such as a sling swivel or a sling mount, before you can attach the sling. Once the attachment points are in place, you can attach the sling by threading the straps through the attachment points and securing them in place with a buckle or a snap. If you own a rifle or are considering owning a rifle you either have a rifle sling or you know you will need to get one. With the hundreds of types of sights and scopes out in the market it would be really helpful to know at least what range of specifications you should be looking right? Thankfully the rail system on my AR and Pistol was already installed and it is the picatinny rail system. After doing some research I found this was the most common industry wide and it is why most manufacturers are including picatinny rails as standard on their firearms. However I did come across another rail system that is just not as common but should be known of.  Picatinny rails and Weaver rails are both mounting systems that are used to attach accessories such as scopes, sights, and bipods to firearms. The main difference between the two is the size and shape of the slots on the rail. Picatinny rails have evenly spaced slots that are 0.206 inches wide, while Weaver rails have unevenly spaced slots that are about 0.180 inches wide. Picatinny rails are more widely used and are the standard for many firearm manufacturers, while Weaver rails are used less frequently and may not be as widely available. Picatinny rails are generally considered to be more durable and easier to use due to their standardized design, but they can also be more expensive than Weaver rails. When looking at a bunch of sights and scopes I came across LPVO and for a while I simply skipped right past it until a few days ago. I'm glad I clicked this time to learn more. I will totally be buying one to play around with. After I have some first hand experience Ill share with you my thoughts. An LPVO, or low power variable optic, is a type of rifle scope that is designed for use at closer ranges and for rapid target acquisition. LPVOs typically have a lower magnification range (usually up to around 8x) and a wide field of view, which makes them well-suited for shooting at moving targets or targets at close to medium distances. I believe now that there are basically 2 categories of scopes, and that is fixed and variable. So here I outline what both are for you. Hope it helps!  A fixed scope is a rifle scope with a single, unchanging magnification level. If you are unsure what parallax means on gun optics then you are right where I used to be. I am no expert but I now understand what this is and why it is so important.  Check out the reflex red dot tube style sight from 2nd Amen Here. MOA... i'm sorry what was that? What the heck is MOA (Minute of angle) and why do I need to know this? This is what was going on in my mind when I came across this specification. I soon learned what it was and it makes total sense. A bullet doesn't just fly exactly where you point the gun for ever right, there are elements like gravity, wind and elevation that we have to consider! Haha silly me. MOA, or Minute of Angle, is a unit of measurement used in gun optics to describe the size of the dot or reticle in the scope or the size of the group of shots fired from the firearm. One MOA is equal to 1/60th of a degree, or about 1 inch at 100 yards, 1.047 inches at 110 yards, 2 inches at 200 yards, etc. In gun optics, MOA is often used to describe the adjustments made to the scope's reticle to account for bullet drop and windage. For example, if a scope has a reticle with 1 MOA markings, then moving the reticle one mark to the right or left will move the point of impact of the bullet approximately 1 inch at 100 yards. Some scopes have MOA adjustments that allow the user to fine-tune the point of impact by turning a knob or making other adjustments. If you are anything like me you will have google at the ready when learning about optics. As soon as I read the term 'eye relief' I googled 'What is eye relief?' and a whole bunch more. After learning about it more and listening to some other folks who know far more than I do I learned this. Dryfire practice: When my instructor mentioned this I was a little lost so after about 20 minutes I plucked up the courage to ask "hey man, what is dryfire practice?". Okay so I am not a huge fan of the holographic sight but you never know, I may change my mind one day. I am a newbie after all!  I learned a little about them and it is interesting, especially the construction complexity verses a reflex sight. A holographic sight, also known as a holographic weapon sight or holographic diffraction sight, is a type of firearm sight that projects a reticle, or aiming point, onto a small glass window in front of the shooter's eye. The reticle is typically in the shape of a dot or a crosshair, and it can be used to aim the firearm more accurately at a target. USPSA, what a world this looks like! I can't wait to get into this! I am going through the process of getting my concealed carry permit and think that its a great move. No matter what your purpose of owning a gun is you'll find you need a good quality, well functioning EDC Gun Belt. Whether for conceal carry, tactical shooting, competitive shooting or just shooting at the range as a hobby. A good quality rigid, stiff yet comfortable EDC Gun Belt is going to go down well in your own books. The thing to look for with this in my experience is the denier of the nylon (that's if you chose to go with nylon, which I would say is a good idea over traditional leather), and it has to be somewhere between 600 and 800 Denier. Denier is basically the strength and rigidity of the belt so above 800 and you'll find the belt gets too stiff, and is very uncomfortable. Less than 300 and the belt is too soft and folds over too easily making the belt not usable for carrying much let alone a gun. 350 to 600 Denier and the belt can handle small loads but the real sweet spot for a good quality EDC gun belt is 600 Denier. You also ant to make sure the belt width is 1.3" to 1.5" and at least 3.5mm thick, which most ballistic 2 PLY nylon is. Its not just me that was brand new to owning and operating a gun. My wife was totally onboard and wanted to suit up too. Kids really did change our outlook and lens we see the world through so off we went to buy our first guns as newbies. My wife held and played around with many smaller lightweight handguns simply because she hadn't had the hours and time practicing under her belt handling the recoil etc. I too had similar aspects to consider being a new gun shooter so when it came to characteristics of a gun we both needed similar elements. Now I have multiple guns and an AR15, I may plan to use it for home defense, especially now I am getting more skilled using it. However an AR isn't typically used for home defense since its designed with a long barrel for medium to long range precision shooting. The first time I went to an indoor gun range with my own gun I found that I need a small bag to carry all the things I thought I needed. Just a heads up on this one folks, the wife and kids walk into the room so I quickly and out of nowhere stop recording. I was about to be done anyway. Big topic and lots more to learn but here is what I have found to date on ammunition for my entry level 9mm pistol. So one of the initial tasks you are going to be faced with is actually purchasing your first gun. This is both exciting and intimidating, or at least it was for me. I was thinking that I should start with a small hand gun to learn and get comfortable with before going balls to the wall John Wick style. So with that being said I found that the Smith & Wesson Shield EZ 9mm was the one for me. Here are some steps and items to consider when heading out to buy your first gun. 

You are now ready to go and buy your gun. Its not like a grocery shop so what do you need to do and how do you buy your 1st gun? As a British citizen now living in America, owning a gun and possibly becoming the next James Bond or John Wick is a little more realistic. Well at least I seem to think so!
