Episode 73: Facing Adversity During the Pandemic with Wynne Lacey
Wynne Lacey is a Mental Health Practitioner and Life Coach in the Chicago area. Like many of her peers, she enjoys utilizing traditional and holistic approaches to improving the mental and emotional health of her clients.
Several years ago, she was invited to serve her local community as a member of the Board of Health. She never imagined that her beliefs about health and wellbeing would conflict so severely with her peers and that her seat on the board would be called into question.
In this fascinating conversation, we talk about what it’s been like for her to remain steadfast in the face of adversity. I admire her determination and hope she is able to influence the board to embrace opposing points of view.

Episode 68: Art Therapy with Ron Formento, Jr.
It's pretty amazing to see that as we age, we often come back to things we enjoyed doing as children. It's as if the artist, chef, magician, singer (fill in the blank) within us reemerges to heal and free us.
In this episode, Ron and I talked about why he started painting again and the impact it's having on his health and wellbeing. You will be amazed to hear how he is connecting with friends and strangers to bring about more connection, compassion and joy. If you've been thinking about reigniting a former hobby, now is a great time to get started.
Ron also changed careers in midlife. It took courage and faith to step away from something he'd dedicated himself to and into a new opportunity. He's thriving in his new role and couldn't be happier.
If you'd like to connect with Ron, visit his website. Check out his blogs and take a look at the beautiful paintings he's done so far.

Dr. Kent Christianson is a licensed chiropractor, acupuncturist and internal medicine diplomat.
He practices functional medicine at the Holistic Chiropractic & Healing Arts Center in Naperville and loves to work with patients to improve their overall health & wellbeing, especially their digestive health.
In this podcast we talk intensely about my favorite topic — food as medicine.
Kent has been able to help his many of his patients identify the underlying causes of their symptoms and resolve them with food swaps and digestive enzymes, when applicable.
He loves to teach others about the healthy, whole-food plant-based dietary lifestyle he and his family enjoy. He and his wife are avid gardeners and enjoy eating plants and herbs from their harvest.

Episode 66: A Servant's Heart with Nannette Vanderheyden
It’s not often that you meet someone whose heart for service is so big. Supporting others is like a calling for Nannette. She is always ready to lend a helping hand at church, the food pantry or anywhere she’s needed. She is a proud mother and grandmother, actively involved in helping to raise the next generation.
Being a blessing to others is a wonderful thing to do in midlife. If any of you are thinking about getting more involved in your community, I urge you do to so. I’ve also had amazing experiences volunteering at non-profit organizations, attending bible studies and participating in book clubs. Schools are always looking for parents and grandparents who can help out in the classroom or during after school events. Your time and talents are needed, so don’t sit home bored and lonely when you can get out there and join the fun.

Episode 65: The Power of Positivity with Ron Hume, Freelance Humanist & Picture Taker
Ron Hume is well known for his jovial spirit and his giving heart - two very important aspects of his life we cover in this podcast episode.
Throughout Ron’s career, he used his time and talents to serve families at risk. Having lost his father at a tender age, he knew what it was like to feel out of control and could relate to his clients who were suffering from substance abuse, housing deficits and many other issues.
In 2015 Ron retired as CEO of 360 Youth Services in Naperville.
Around that time, he developed a keen interest in photography and decided to share his expertise by taking pictures at galas and other local events. As a former non-profit leader, he knows which photo opportunities to focus on and how to quickly snap a picture and exit the scene.
Ron is a wonderful storyteller. I know you’re going to enjoy hearing about his wondrous adventures. You will also be inspired and amazed by the way he dealt with a potentially life threatening health issue.
Find Ron Hume on Facebook or follow him on Instagram.

Episode 64: Integrative Approach to Mental Health with Lucy Arenberg, LCPC

Episode 63: Splitting Time Between Two Homes with Pat Hoogendoorn
Are you dreaming of splitting your time between two or more locations?
Twenty+ years ago, Pat visited her best friend in Florida and fell in love with the climate. She traveled to the sunshine state several times throughout the year and eventually decided to get her own place. Having suffered with arthritic pain, the warmer weather was just the reprieve she needed during the winter season. Over time, she found she really enjoyed late fall and early spring. Today she spends half her time at her condo on the beach.
What's special about her story is that Pat ventured out on her own before it became trendy. Her husband of 55 years still enjoys living and working full-time in Chicago, so they have given each other the freedom to satisfy their own wants and needs, while maintaining a loving and resilient bond. Pat loves summers in Chicago and rather seamlessly re-establishes herself each spring. And, of course her husband and family come to visit her in Florida throughout her stay.
To learn more about this growing trend, read this article Living Apart Together.
As Pat mentioned in our podcast, she is guided by her faith and loves the following bible verses: Psalm 119:89-90 God’s faithfulness endures to all generations. Psalm 50:1 “The mighty One, God, Yahweh speaks and calls the earth from sunrise to sunset” Acts 20:35 …”It is better to give than to receive.”

Episode 60: Beautiful Faces Going Places - Women's Success Network with Carol Dockum
Carol Dockum's Beautiful Faces Going Places - Women Success Network is more than just a business directory, it's a visibility, education and connection platform for speakers, trainers, coaches, etc. to showcase their expertise. They offer in-person events such as lunch and learns, empower hours, summits, virtual business weeks, webinars and so much more.
Beautiful Faces Going Places is affordable, convenient and enriching. Who knew that going virtual would help business owners connect more authentically than in-person, but that has been my experience with this group and I’m thrilled to invite you to join us by clicking here. You can also join the facebook group by clicking here.
I have one testimonial I'm thrilled to share. I recently needed a graphic designer to create my podcast cover art. Carol connected me to one of her members and within a couple of hours I had a beautiful end product. If you're in the market for a graphic designer or virtual assistant, please reach out to Rhonda Holscher. She's amazing!
One of Carol's favorites quotes (and mine) by Maya Angelou is, "at the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel." Carol and her success team truly know how to make you feel welcome and empowered.

If you are like most people, your goal in life is to be happy. And contrary to what some believe, money is NOT the key to happiness.
So what is? Research shows that one of the biggest factors to increase happiness is living a life of purpose. What does that mean?
What if you could…
Stop living in the past and feel hopeful about the future? Take charge of your life instead of letting life happen to you? Know exactly why you’re here now and what you’re meant to do next? Own your value and contribution at this stage of your life? Wake up every morning excited to face the day? Show up with passion and confidence? That’s how you feel when you know your life’s purpose. And research shows having a clear sense of purpose helps us live longer, healthier, more fulfilled lives.
That’s why I was excited to hear my friend and colleague, Midlife Empowerment Coach Hélène Stelian, is sharing her tested and proven Purpose Formula in her brand-new training
Proven Purpose Formula:

How to write your own purpose statement And much, much more!Hélène is offering this masterclass live only on Saturday September 18, 2-3:30pm US Central time.
Don’t miss out! Sign up for Proven Purpose Formula: A Masterclass for Women 40+ Seeking Clarity and Direction in the Second Half.
Knowing your purpose is the first step toward creating a life of joy and fulfillment. You have a choice. You can keep living by default, or you can take a bold step into a life of purpose.
I hope you’ll let Hélène show you how!
Xo,
Tamara

Episode 59: Savoring Creativity & Wanderlust with Nancy Donatelli, a Spiritual Adventurer
I believe there are no coincidences and that God puts people in our lives for a reason. Nancy appeared in my season of downsizing & empty nesting to help me gain clarity and confidence to pursue my passions. She is just a little ahead of me on this journey and has already given me insights and faith that this stage of life can be everything I've imagined. We are kindred spirits -- seeking knowledge, experience and connection. You will be dazzled by her stories and her commitment to lifelong learning. If you are feeling wanderlust - you are not alone.
Take a look at the following links to learn about places you can go for spiritual enlightenment.

Be inspired. "It is only by following your deepest instinct that you can lead a rich life and if you let your fear of consequence prevent you from following your deepest instinct, then your life will be safe, expedient and thin." -- Katherine Hathaway
Consider this prayer for abundance in 2021: "May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful. And, don't forget to make some art - write, draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And, I hope somewhere in your next year, you surprise yourself." - Neil Caiman

Episode 58: Brain Health & More with Jan Saran
Many moons ago, Thomas Edison said, "the doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and the cause and prevention of disease." More and more I see glimpses of this and it is gives me hope for a better future. I believe in complimentary medicine where we can combine the best of treatments for health and wellbeing. Whether you have optimal health or are struggling right now, every time you eat or drink, you have the opportunity to feed disease or fight it.
I take and share a product called Juice Plus+ because it offers me 30 different fruits, veggies and berries in a capsule or a gummy. I eat a lot of plants already, but cannot eat 9-13 servings in that variety on a consistent basis. Juice Plus+ helps to bridge the gap. I also love growing some of my own plants via the Tower Garden. It's aeroponic and super easy to grow leafy greens, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and so much more right on my balcony. This year for the first time, I'll bring my tower inside and grow my garden with lights.
Listen to Jan and I chat about the benefits of eating lots of plants and some of the studies Juice Plus+ has published on brain health and the immune system. Click on the link for summaries of the 40+ clinical research studies they've done so far. I absolutely love that this product -- it's real food and gets right into the cells of my body to help me stay healthy.

Episode 56: Collagen Benefits with Elaine Morrison
A healthy diet is essential for good health. What that looks like can vary over time, so it's really important to listen to your body and pivot when you notice changes in your health. Although I prefer to eat a plant-centric diet, I have never gone vegan for more than a 30 day stint. I tend to go in a direction 80-90% and then listen to my body for cues on what it wants and needs. Play around a bit and see what works for you.

Special Edition: Gluten-Free Challenge & Shred 10 Program
This special edition is for anyone looking to jump-start a gluten-free lifestyle and/or for those participating in the Shred 10 program. I have been eating gluten-free since 2015 and want to make the transition as easy as possible for anyone looking to give it a try. After you listen to this podcast, please let me know if you would like a copy of the Gluten-Free Challenge pdf that includes a great shopping list and more recipes. I also have a journal you might enjoy using for mindfulness and to document your food (in)tolerances.
The Shred 10 is a program run by my Juice Plus+ partners. Participants are asked to think of 10 habits they would like to add, reduce or eliminate for 10 days. We always recommend eating gluten-free and dairy-free during this program in order to lower inflammation and to regulate ph balance. The goal is to eat real food in its whole form, to maximize your nutrient intake and stimulate your bodies natural cleansing process. While you're detoxing from foods, you might also consider how you are affected by other stressors in your life including the environment, personal care products, relationships, etc.
My Shred 10 usually consists of the following habits:
Add:
Drink 64 oz of plain water Eat more plant and animal protein Eat 1-2 smoothies per day Retire to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual and with the goal of sleeping 8 hours per nightReduce
Alcohol (I give myself permission to have one (1/2 glass) of wine if I'm socializing with friends during my shred) Screen time Interaction with people who tempt me and/or test my patienceEliminate
Gluten Dairy Breakfast (I use an eating window of 10:00 - 7:00)If you would like to learn more about the Shred 10 program, please watch this short video. If you want a deeper understanding, also watch this video. If these videos inspire you to take action, please visit my Juice Plus+ website and then reach out to talk about next steps. Episode 50: Impact of the Pandemic on Kids with Don Seidman, MD
We cannot under estimate the impact the pandemic has had on our kids. Thankfully, professional resources are available to offer them support and guidance. I just complete a certification program on resilience and would like to offer some initial thoughts.
To begin, in order to have the energy and capacity to deal with tough mental and emotional issues, we need to have strong physical stamina. This requires deep sleep, conscious eating and daily movement.
To enjoy deep sleep, create an environment that fosters it. Here are some initial ideas for you to try.
Remove ALL technology including TV's, Computers and Cell Phones from the bedroom. Turn the wifi in the house OFF at night, if possible, or at least shut down computers and put cell phones on airplane mode (outside the bedroom). Pack up your school or professional work and remove it from your bedroom. Dim the lights 30+ minutes before bed to prepare your mind for rest. Keep a gratitude journal next to your bed and write down three positive things that happened that day. Episode 49: Resilient By Design with Monica Bodurka
Resilience is not something we are born with, it's a set of skills we inhabit. Anyone can learn to be more resilient - given the interest and commitment to lifelong learning and self-love.
Monica and her team at the Leadership Wellness Group developed a curriculum called Resilient by Design that I attended over the last few months. It was a wonderful diversion for me during the pandemic to focus on my own wellbeing and learn something new I could share with all of you. Admittedly, these concepts are not new, but we are human and need to hear them over and over again until they stick.
If you would like help in this area, please reach out. I got so much out of this experience and would be happy to make a referral to Monica's program or share my own rendition of it with you. My mission or mantra, if you will, is LOVE, PLAY, GROW. The habits of resilience are nicely embedded within these concepts I'm using in my coaching practice.
If you are available on July 8th from 10 -4, please join me for a day at Soul Farm called Resilience Cultivated in Nature. Click on this link to learn more.

Episode 46: Sarah Weyenburg
I have met some amazing yoga teachers over the years. Each one has inspired me in different ways. Today I'm visiting with Sarah Weyenberg, owner of Happy Shiny Yoga, an online platform for beginner to advanced yogis. I had the privilege of practicing yoga in-person with Sarah when we lived in the same community. I really enjoyed her light-hearted nature, her ability to break down the poses into bite size pieces and her desire to keep her students safe in their poses.
As she said life is not always sunshine and rainbows, but there is always something to celebrate. People often come to yoga for the physical practice, but they continue to come back again and again for the emotional and spiritual connection between themselves and others. Your mat is a place for you to learn about yourself and to practice gratitude for life.

Episode 45: Dr Michael Meersman
Dr Michael Meersman, DC, MS, ART focuses on the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, and getting people out of pain and back in control of their daily life. He is certified in Active Release Technique (ART), a soft tissue technique designed to decrease muscle pain and tightness, while increasing range of motion and function.
I have been working with Dr Meersman to complete my recovery from frozen shoulder. By utilizing an array of modalities like the ones offered at the Bannockburn Chiropractic & Sports Injury Center, I have been able to heal much faster than other people suffering from frozen shoulder.
It’s clear when you visit the office that they are up to date on ways to bring natural function back to the body. They have a pilates reformer and an open area for working through exercises. I always leave my appointments with stretches or movements I can do to continue my progress at home.
I feel empowered to take back control of my health and am proud of the work I’ve done to get here. I’ve done acupuncture, dry needling, cupping, hot yoga, physical therapy and chiropractic care.
I also did an interesting treatment called Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy in my doctor’s office. PRP has long been used by physicians to help speed wound healing and treat health issues like arthritis and injuries to muscles, tendons and ligaments. They don’t normally use it for shoulders, but I wanted to give it a try in order to heal my body from the inside out and I personally believe it helped some.
I’m grateful for everyone on my healing team and am super excited for you to learn more about Dr Meerman. In addition to working in the office, he is the team chiropractor for the Chicago Bears. If he can work to help endurance athletes stay well, I know he can help novices like you and me.

Episode 43: The Amazing Benefits of Bringing Food Education into the Classroom with Alex DeSorbo-Quinn from Pilot Light
As much as parents try, sometimes food education happens outside the home. We've all that experience when our children try something at a friend's house that you've been begging them to try at home. To expand children's understanding of food and its impact on their overall life, four chefs from Chicago formed the non-profit called Pilot Light. They train teachers to bring food culture into their lesson plans for reading, writing, math and science. The students love the curriculum and bring what they learn home to their families.

Episode 35: No Regrets: Hope for Your Caregiving Season with Rayna Nieses
Caring for our loved ones can be a most rewarding gift to our loved ones and ourselves, or quite daunting. In this episode, Rayna shares her experience and insights on how to make the most of our time with our aging parents and how to work within a team for your own good and theirs. She is honest about the need for us to protect ourselves and our time so that once our parents pass, we have our own life still intact. She has written a book for caregivers, hosts a podcast and does coaching to support and guide people in their season of caregiving.
She has been quoted as saying, "There is finality that’s coming as you walk with them to the end, but there doesn’t have to be hopelessness in it all. Everyone ages, and you will reach the end of your life someday, and that’s okay. There can be joy, hope, and love in the midst of this final journey."

Episode 25: A Plant-based Diet with Jan Saran
There are many studies that indicate a plant-based diet is the best for longevity. If you follow the blue zones, you will find that many of the healthiest people on the planet eat mostly plants, with a sprinkling of meat, dairy and legumes. I really love this article, Is 90% Good Enough? What we can learn from the Reducetarian Approach and Blue Zones about Vegan Diets because it emphasizes flexibility and curiosity.
In our podcast, Jan and I talk about how a plant-based diet helped her recover from the side-effects of cancer therapy. With the help of her husband, she was able to use whole plant foods and supplementation with Juice Plus+ to help her rebuild her immune system.
When my kids were diagnosed with Crohn's disease (years ago) and encouraged to eat a bland, low fiber diet, we started taking Juice Plus+ and have never looked back. I truly believe it helped all of us stay healthier than we would have been otherwise.
