Pet Grooming Products: The Good. The Bad. The TOXIC. Dr.Poonum Wilkhu of Furbabies Botanicals
Due to a lack of regulations, many pet grooming products are not as safe as they claim to be. Pet skin is also as thin as baby skin (approx 5 x thinner) depending on breed. Therefore much care needs to be taken when buying pet skincare products.
In this episode of The Petropolist podcast, Dr. Poonum Wilkhu discusses the difference between pet grooming products and why the consumer needs to tread cautiously when choosing pet shampoos, conditioners, paw wipes, and any other grooming products that may expose your pets to toxic chemicals which may cause harm.

Pet Industry's Impact on the Environment w/Tanya Hart of Augie Bones Ep#96
The pet industry has a significant and detrimental impact on the environment. Over the past decade, plastic has been the most commonly used material for pet products ranging from food packaging to pet toys.
Plastic pollution has a range of environmental effects. Plastics release hazardous chemicals into the air, water, and soil. These chemicals can bioaccumulate in the ocean, posing threat to marine life - it is in the news every day…it takes a long time for plastics to decompose and they can and do remain in the environment for years or even centuries. The plastic then breaks into smaller particles and can block sunlight in the ocean, which in turn has an adverse effect on the food chain. Plastic products, pet products, and non-recyclable or non-compostable packaging typically end up in landfills, further contributing to air and water pollution. Let's learn how the pet industry leaders may be finally coming around a bit...giddy up big boys - you have kept your heads buried in the sand for far too long.
Tanya Hart, the Founder & CEO of Titan Bioplastics & Augie Bones is leading the path by providing the turtle-paced pet company leadership solutions for replacing toxic non-recycled petroleum-based products.
Pet owners and pet retailers can demand quicker and bigger changes from this highly self-serving industry. Pet owners and pet retailers can take steps to reduce their plastic consumption and adjust their buying habits to purchasing and using non-toxic, sustainable pet products. Look for reusable containers, pet toys, and pet accessories that are made of natural, eco-friendly materials - speak loudly with your $'s.

Roger DeGregori - Entrepreneur & Aquarium expert Bundles Indie Pet, Vet Clinics & Aquariums at Pet Yards
About 2 or 3 years ago I read a post that Roger DeGregori had written on LinkedIn questioning the plight of the abandoned big box stores on every corner while wondering what could be created within those structures... He had some ideas and fast forward to today Roger and his team have envisioned, repurposed, and constructed a vibrant community of independent pet businesses called Pet Yards.
Jeff Bezos made this statement when asked about entrepreneurship at a re:Mars Amazon conference: "You have got to have some passion for the arena you're going to develop and work in, otherwise, you're going to be competing against people who do have passion for that and they're going to build better products and services."
Roger checks every box for merging entrepreneurship, passion, community, and pets - He is one of the good ones in the industry and one to watch.

UNDERSTANDING FELINES with AI & TABLY - EP#92
Using the Tably app, a photo of your cat says a thousand words - or maybe just a few - helping your cat tell you whether they’re having a good day or a bad one. Tably’s highly accurate AI model assesses a photo against validated veterinary pain scales. The model has assessed hundreds of thousands of photos with over 90% precision. It utilizes proprietary machine learning algorithms to empower cat parents to make informed decisions about their cat’s health. Tably employs a number of artificial intelligence processes: object detection, image suitability detection, object extraction, image categorization, and result analysis. To minimize errors, we have configured our algorithm to validate the presence of a feline face in the image before sending it to the AI model for further analysis. Tably is the first product created by Sylvester.ai, a company that creates predictive healthcare products powered by artificial intelligence to improve animal health outcomes across species. Sylvester.ai believes animals can live healthier, longer lives when humans can be more proactive in their care.

Bonus Episode #91 with Richard Reynolds
Check out this bonus episode and make sure you share the @hands2paws app with anyone looking to bring a dog or cat into their lives - They will be matched with the right pet for their life and will be directed to shelters and the breeders that are NOT puppy mills or the toxic backyard breeders that are causing disease and devastation for so many animals and their unknowing buyers.
Please choose to ADOPT - The shelters are full of pure and mixed breeds that were displaced because, for many, their previous owners chose to NOT educate themselves, chose to buy impulsively, and did not think about the welfare of the animals.

Mark Scott of Bella & Duke Gets to the Heart of their Growth - EP#90
"Reeaallyy...Is it really pets come first" - so many brands make this statement, so many brands plaster it all over their products but are they being truthful? We all know who they are...hell you may even be one of the people who make this claim about your products but reeaallyyyyyy and honestly do pets come first for your brand or products?
Mark Scott & Tony Ottley brought together the vision of community, quality, and health when they created Bella & Duke, UK's fast-growing and leading raw pet food subscription company.
Listen to this episode to learn why Mark Scott's vision should be what every brand that claims pets come first should strive to be before they make the statement.

Scaling a Woman Owned Pet Brand - Episode 89
Did you know that the majority of female-run and owned businesses are under the moniker of "Small Business" (fewer than 500 employees)?
I often wonder why we choose to remain small - I understand starting small but remaining small is something I was questioning after my conversation with Cindy Dunston Quirk, founder of Scout & Zoe's.
The conversation also took me back to 2011 when I wanted to invest in a home-cooked pet food brand that had just launched 2 years prior - The 2 woman owners were so freaky, frightened, and protective of the two products that they continuously got in their own way during the investment and partnership conversations... At that time I thought they were so ahead of the pet industry's thinking pattern about food that if they got investments, the right partnership and mentoring, and included a cat food in their line of products there could be very profitable magic....but their need to control and be right was too overpowering for the duos' growth and for my sense of self so I threw my hands up and wished them luck. They are still a small...small business and the home-cooked sector in pet food is growing like wildfire with more junk than quality. So as a woman and a business owner and consultant in the pet sector I am going to scream at the top of my lungs and tell women to give up the need to be in control and perfect. Get rid of the riff-raff in your workplace and your mind- you don't need other people's drama, get out of your own way and ask for help. This world is full of opportunities and if you are a creator and a do-er it's time to start kicking ass and taking names. You got it.

Is the USDA, AKC & The Pet Industry Lobby Perpetuating the Tragic Reality of Puppy Mills? EP#88
In this episode, we delve deeply into what CAN BE DONE to eliminate these death facilities and how you can reach out to your state representatives and Pet industry lobby group executives at the Pet Advocacy Network and demand that they start doing what they CLAIM they are doing...These backyard breeders and puppy mills are disease-carrying toxic grounds and they are pumping out SICK animals from sick animals - THEY need to be shut down and the REAL breeders who breed for health and breed integrity and our animal shelter facilities and workers need the support NOT the criminal puppy mills. WHY is the Pet Advocacy network choosing its current path of supporting the disease-ridden puppy and kitten factories? I would love to have a member of PAN (formerly PIJAC) delve into how we can come together to eliminate the bad apples (You can find them on the HSUS Horrible 100 - MANY are repeat offenders that the USDA has allowed to continue operating).
Below is one of the Hands2Paws blog posts about the USDA.
In the United States, there are an estimated 10,000 commercial dog breeding operations, also known as puppy mills. A United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) license is required for any breeder who sells wholesale to pet stores or brokers, but not for breeders who sell directly to the public. This means that thousands of puppy mill operators are not subject to any federal oversight or regulation.
As a result, these breeding facilities can get away with appalling conditions, such as dogs being kept in small cages with no room to exercise, unsanitary conditions, minimal veterinary care, and little to no socialization. The dogs in these mills are often sick and passed along to unsuspecting consumers who paid top dollar for a healthy pet.
Ethical Issues Associated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture The U.S. Department of Agriculture has the power to make a difference for these animals by holding all commercial breeders accountable and inspected, regardless of how they sell their puppies. But instead, the agency has chosen to turn a blind eye to this growing problem. The USDA’s current system is failing both puppies and their consumers. By only inspecting kennels that sell wholesale to pet stores or brokers, the agency is effectively giving a pass to thousands of puppy mill operators who sell directly to the public. As a result, these breeding facilities can get away with appalling conditions, such as dogs being kept in small cages with no room to exercise, unsanitary conditions, minimal veterinary care, and little to no socialization.
Not only does this cause immense suffering for the dogs involved, but it also dupes unsuspecting consumers who paid top dollar for a healthy pet. The USDA has the power to make a difference for these animals by holding all commercial breeders accountable and inspected—but instead, the agency has chosen to turn a blind eye to this growing problem.
USDA Turns a Blind EyeIt’s time for the USDA to do better for both puppies and their consumers. The agency has the power to make a difference for these animals by holding all commercial breeders accountable and inspected—but instead, the agency has chosen to turn a blind eye to this growing problem. If you care about animal welfare, please contact your representatives and demand that they hold the USDA accountable for its failures. Together, we can make a difference for these innocent creatures who deserve better lives.

Whiskers Holistic Pet Retail Founder Randy Klein - E#83
Walking into Whiskers Holistic Pet store in 1992 transformed my understanding of pet food and eventually (2005) my career trajectory.
I had no preconceived notions of what was good or bad in pet food - there was NO internet - no NOISE from brands and bloggers and influencers. It was me, a type 1 diabetic who understood the impact of food on EVERY aspect of my life, and my ex-husband who as a singer, claimed that everything he consumed impacted the condition of his voice so bringing home a pet from the shelter and having been handed a bag of Iams kibble seemed a bit odd to me - I didn't understand how an obligate carnivore could digest and be 'ok' eating cereal (I added chicken broth to the kibble the first week because I really thought it was meant to be moistened and made into mush - I very quickly switched to Pet Guard and Halo canned food - Remember those brands?;)
I am grateful to Randy & Phil Klein for being innovators in the field of holistic pet nutrition and retail.
As they continue to help thousands of pet owners/pet parents with education and guidance every single day, we, pet owners, distributors, and brands should support Whiskers so that they continue on this amazing path. NYC and its boroughs are full of stores but very few, can compete with the knowledge and support Randy & Phil have brought to pet owners...

Getting To Sustainability w/ Lab Grown Meat Versus Pet Industry Greenwashing #82
A few updates: 1st meeting of The Indy Pet Community Advisory Group (NO THERE IS NO WEBSITE for a reason;) is going to take place in late September. If you are going to Super Zoo and want to find out about the Indy Pet Community Advisory group (or my new line of Catazztic Cat treats) send me a note and let's connect and make sure you are subscribed to THE PETROPOLIST PODCAST because you will want to get a reminder when my next episode (#83) is out - My guest will be with Randy Klein, CEO of Whiskers holistic pet store in NYC which has been around since before some of you were even a speck in your parents' eyes.
We all know how talented the pet food sector is when it comes to making shit up to create the perception of being do-gooders or creating a "new & improved pet industry sustainable model" without really doing much different than they have been doing for the last 20 to 40 years. As a collective, pet food manufacturers have created layers to insulate their bad behavior, like new organizations that make it seem like they're recycling the big bad unrecyclable kibble bags or that they need to be applauded for their efforts in being sustainable through the use of peanut shells as a source of fiber or their use of dead or diseased animals that suffered and didn't quite make it off the crammed truck to their proper slaughter session...yeah a little bit of greenwashing takes those big brands a long way financially and perhaps we shouldn't forget that they science the shit out of it all. These very companies are incredibly active in pursuing, learning, and making investments in companies and products that are innovative and may one day be their competition or their goldmine.
This episode is kinda sorta about asking ourselves the question: How do we feed our pets without harming the environment and other animals? Are lab-grown meats the answer or will The Big AG Bullies and Lobbies continue to work their magic and keep Americans in the Dark using their might with political and media influence? Check out Nancy F. Huehnergarth's article I linked here.
My guest today is SCIENTIST, Shannon Falconer.
Shannon holds a Master's degree in Biochemistry, a Ph.D. in Chemical Biology, and worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at Stanford University prior to co-founding Because Animals in 2016
Will the answer to these problems be Because, Animals.? god I hope so!!!

Hissy Fit - It's not the cat's meow with Dr. Rachel Geller Ep#81
"Cats don't purposely misbehave. They don't think of right and wrong the way we do. The cat is trying to solve the problem as a cat..."
If we were only as smart as cats.
Here we are again addressing cat behavior with Dr. Rachel Geller. In this episode of Cat University, the conversation is all about war! Which cat is instigating the battle and which cat is in defense mode. Listen and learn, I certainly learned a whole lot during this session.
As always, thank you to Dr. Rachel Geller for reminding us that our cats are not at all like us and that we need to recognize their instinctual feline needs and behaviors which are very different than the way the media likes to represent and try to humanize them.

Small Batch Pet Food Founders Diana & David Vogel - EP#79
We recorded this episode about 3 months ago - At the time I was doing consulting for a multi-location pet business in NYC and there was less than a handful of stores in the NY area that carried Small Batch Pet. It is incredible how disconnected many pet store owners are from the needs of their clients and how to communicate with them. The conversation with David & Diana Vogel and my experience in the industry over the last 20 years all were inspirations for one of my current heart & soul projects...And please clear your mind of all of the stupid thoughts about 'agendas' or wherever your fear-based thinking is taking you about why I am doing this...

EP#75 - Cats and Punishment - Cat University w/Dr. Rachel Geller
Here we are again at Cat University with Feline behaviorist and retainment specialist Dr. Rachel Geller.
What our cats clearly perceive as punishment may not be so obvious to us...Listen & Learn.
In today's episode, we learn about how the human-cat bond can become severed by actions cat owners take for granted as being minor and even considered 'normal' when disciplining their cats.
You will learn how the use of a popular behavior modification product on the market can in fact lead to your cat eliminating outside of the litter box which is one of the main reasons why cats are dumped/abandoned or given up for adoption.
You will learn why your sweet ways of showing affection and love feel very different for your cat than they do for you. The cat parents' actions may be the cause of anxiety and distrust instead of love and trust...

EP#73 - Jim Scott, Pet Industry Legend - Truth about Kibble
I am going to start with, I don't get paid to promote brands nor do I accept payment to feature them on my podcast - in fact, when I started this podcast I didn't want to discuss brands. Unfortunately, I found that this is absolutely impossible mostly because every day I am asked which brand is best and which brand will help an animal that is unwell become well...it's a tough ask by pet owners mainly because of the amount of banter on the web. The big dollars spent on ads and the big number of brands entering the marketplace because pet food and pet products consistently create big revenue with low upfront investment requirements committed to ingredient quality has made the pet food segment a place of havoc and chaos for the pet owners. I want pet owners and independent pet retailers to know that there is more out there than what comes up on the first 2 pages of a Google search for BEST pet food. Where the big brands have the upper hand and power is the money they spend on the advertisements and brand recognition all over the web and the veterinary clinics (a big share owned by pet food manufacturers). These foods being advertised have been consistently the foods that cause all of my clients to be clients !!!
The advertising dollars pushing the unsubstantiated claims won't get any of our pets eating quality products but will lead the masses into thinking whatever the brands want them to think - my purpose with my food episodes is to introduce and open up the conversation about those brands that commit to bringing quality and some sort of moral code to a very unregulated and ethically devoid industry.

EP#72 - Entrepreneurship, Franchising, Happy Cats = Chris Raimo
Remember that movie Field of Dreams? The one where that voice keeps saying
"If you build it, they will come..."
Well, that's sort of what founders Chris and Meg Raimo felt was happening to them shortly before they conceived the idea for the Happy Cat Hotel & Spa. The couple had owned and operated their original business venture, Home Sweet Home Pet Care, a house-call pet care service that provided dog walking, pet sitting when they heard that voice whisper to them. At that time it was widely accepted that it was better to leave your pets home than to put them in a kennel - especially cats. When it came to visiting those same cats, however, Chris, Meg, and their team began to notice that their feline friends were not doing so well. Cats that were typically withdrawn or aloof began pining for affection while others would regress and develop a stir-crazy mentality that would bring about fits of destruction, urinating, and hunger strikes.
Entrepreneurs that they are, Chris and Meg started asking questions. What does it matter that a cat is at home in its 'normal' environment, if the home is barren of contact and socialization? What does the place matter to a truly social creature?
From there, the founders started answering the questions and developing a solution. What if the cat didn't stay home but went instead to a place that provided enrichment all day long? Would they adapt? Behavioral research shows they will. Give them places to climb, hide, run, and rest, offer them physical touch and affection, as well as interactive replications of play and hunting, and they, will not only adapt but THRIVE. In other words, create a place just for cats.

EP#71 - 'Til Death Do Us Part
Til Death do us part...for me, this is where I think, God, I hope a long life and an easy pain free death is the only thing in life that will separate me from my pets. I am not alone in feeling the value and importance of the human animal bond. So often, the death of a pet is just not acknowledged the same way a loss of a human would be.
As pet owners, pet parents, animal lover... however you choose to identify your relationship with your pet - I would bet that you have felt the disconnect from people that just didn't understand the relationship you shared with the pets in your life.
Who knew there are people out there called Pet chaplains that can help when you are grieving the loss of a pet. I hope this episode helps you or someone you care about get through a difficult time with just a little more ease and knowing that we don't need to be alone or ashamed of the way we feel. Ask for help - there are lots of us that understand. Love, Tazz.

EP#65 - Is your Pet Food Safe - Pet Food Safety Series #2 w/ David Primrose
Do you know if your pet food is safe? What happened in 2007 with food fraud and the economically motivated adulteration of pet food that killed 4000 pets can happen again...What can each of us do to mitigate the risks and the vulnerability associated with food fraud and risky food practices.
David Primrose - Expert in pet food safety discusses where we have the opportunity to create change in food safety.
Here are a few important take-aways from the episode:
Traceability study...ask your pet food brand to provide this information for your specific batch of pet food and see what they tell you. Do they have this data? if not, then be wary.
When it comes to Salmonella is a zero tolerance policy for salmonella realistic, especially with the large number of raw foods in the commercial pet food sector? David delves into this question.
David is adamant that HACCP needs to be applied to the pet food supply chain and with that a greater sharing of data between all manufacturers in order for brands and manufacturers to create a state of prevention as opposed to constantly being in a reactive response mode.
Education of all stakeholders in the pet food supply chain including the pet owners is incredibly important - in general we need more transparency and the pet owner needs to show a high standard of hygiene from feeding to cleaning up/picking up feces... Listen & learn

EP#58 - One-Eyed Leo with Ciaran Walsh
What is it?: ‘One-Eyed Leo’ is an e-book designed for parents to read to children. Age group is the 6 to 10-year old who request/demand to have a puppy or dog in the family home. This is the trigger for up to 80% of adoptions (the other 20% being elderly people living alone). More often than not the decision to adopt is spontaneous, ill-informed, with no plan, nor post adoption schedule. This book aims to reverse this trend.
Who is selling it?
The authors of One-Eyed Leo are seeking Rescues, Veterinary practices, microchipping sites and businesses directly involved in pet welfare services, to sell via their online shops. Using an affiliate marketing system, the promoter will receive a 20% remuneration on each sale at the end of each calendar month. Furthermore, distribution will be limited to just a few outlets in each country or state, and the e-book will NOT be made available via Amazon or similar websites. The intention is that this book will only be available directly from pet service providers.
Commercial details: E-Book Link: https:/www.doginternetofthings.ie/ RRP:E-Book$12.50/€10.00 Please forward any questions to: Ciaran@doginternetofthings.com

A few reviews:
Dr. Alyssun Grant, BSc(Hons), MSc, PhD.
Certified Canine First Aid Responder, Canine Remedial Massage & Rehabilitation Practitioner.
“This book is excellent, it's detail may make families think twice, which is good for the poor dogs who may be taken into homes only to be cast aside after a year /2/3 or so. It's perfect for assisting people's research about the responsibilities, time and cost of owning a dog and will help to ensure only the most committed to the job will become dog owners - meaning lots of happier dogs in their forever homes. I love the colour prints, the drawings are lovely. “
Debra Vey Voda Hamilton, Hamilton Law and Mediation. Bestselling author. Esq./Mediator/Conflict Coach: “This book is, without a doubt, the best pre-puppy purchase you can give your child, grandchild, or friend. It should be required reading for everyone contemplating bringing a pet into their lives.”
Rosy Romero, Radio Host, Author. Mexico City: “I love this colourful book. A beautiful love story. Everything you need to understand before and after you adopt a dog. This sets the standard for what dog care should be in every civilized country and in every home. The best way to prevent dogs from being abandoned.”
Brigitte Barton, CAB, A.Dip.CBM, FISAP, MICB, MICAN. Executive Director, International Society of Animal Professionals:
“Every parent has faced the question of “can we have a dog” and this book will help to ensure that every family member knows their roles in welcoming a dog into the house and in looking after him to ensure a happy life together.”

EP#57 - "This Being Human..." Cat University
The key take away from this episode is that it ALL starts with the choices made by the human. Every action leads to a reaction, response or consequence...so in this episode we discover why your cat does certain things and why it may be you and not your cat (most of the time:)
The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
by Rumi (Taken from SELECTED POEMS by Rumi, Translated by Coleman Barks - Penguin Classics, 2004).

EP#56 - REBOUNDOG
Spencer Hodgetts, the founder of Reboundog believes that every person can bring about goodness. He created the social group Reboundog to bring together the people that practice what they preach in the world of animal welfare and human welfare.
A little about who Spencer is...in his own words:
"I believe that undesirable dogs & disadvantaged people have the right to belong in society!
So I help pet advocacy & therapy professionals create the social-impact they desire.
About four years ago someone on social media in the US shared a video about a “prison dog program”. That video touched something deep down in me about listening, real deep listening….without pre-judgement. I’ve been in too many situations from very young childhood on where I or others around me have not been listened to.
When I went to secondary school in Holyhead, N.Wales in ‘68 I was one of only half a dozen English kids in a school of 1900+ so one learnt pretty quick to fight your ground. An old school friend, now in Norway who has kept in loose contact with a cousin, commented recently that she remembered me as standing up to speak his mind on environmental issues. I’d grown up there on a beach with a rescue English collie as my friend. So I’ve been standing up with my head above the parapet for over half a century!
My working life falls into two blocks of landscaping big stuff such as motorways & logistics truck driving which included union representation of 7k UK employees with the Global Board in Europe. So working with real people who don’t give a proverbial. Oh! 3 years in the middle for a national group for small business owners which lobbied MPs & MEPs based on referendum surveys (great for developing listening skills without your own opinion).
I’ve spent the previous two decades+ since the passing of my brother learning about personal development (not the happy clappy crap), so could see this thing about people & dogs that have never been listened to. In 2015 after the completion of a Medicine Walk my business coach concluded “you have a deeply relational gift of listening to and learning from a living sensate world. That is who you are. Go use it well in service”
So when this video popped up it made so much sense and about which I could see so much potential not just in the prison sector, but in all situations where we have disadvantaged people from the homeless & those who belong to gangs, the lonely, the elderly to veterans with PTSD. Rather than just have ordinary people train therapy dogs which are given to the disadvantaged let’s train the disadvantaged to be the trainers!
Plus surely such collaborations must create a regular solution to a lot of the rescued dogs that aren’t cute….the underdogs.
Of which we’ve rescued several over the last four decades+.
Now I use my listening & networking skills to bring people together who can make social-impact happen locally, nationally & internationally. From my earlier botanical background I see networks as potential symbiotic relationships rather than a social hierarchy."

EP# 51 - Jeremy Petersen of Identity Pet Nutrition
It was a blast speaking with Jeremy Petersen of Identity Pet Nutrition for this episode.
In one part of this episode we discuss the the cost of food and what goes into the processing of meats and this statement that Jeremy made was, for me, representative of the mindless approach many, if not most humans take when it comes to eating...so when you hear the part where Jeremy says "if you like eating sports & watching chicken wings..." think about how little thought is put into choosing what you put into your mouths then connect that with the disengaged choices most make when buying their pet foods and how little thought is put into the health of our pets and the connection of how the choices we make affects them.

EP#50 - Cat University - The Do's & Don'ts of Pets & Work
There’s information floating around about taking pets to our offices or to work once 'things' start opening back up. *Statistics on Petco's website from a 2021 Petco Consumer Survey of 2,001 US pet parents indicates the following: *44% of Pet Parents want their employers to adopt a pet friendly workplace *69% of pet parents are stressed about how going back to work will impact their pet. * 83% of pet parents had minimized stress levels due to working from home in close contact with their pets . I have to comments about that 83% reduction in stress levels due to working from home …shouldn’t we factor in the reduced stress from not having to commute, being able to wake up later than normal, or the fact that we can roll out of bed get our coffee and start work in our underwear! *This survey, this information about how we benefit is laid out on Petco's website. Will taking our pets to work benefit them? I did a not so technical survey of 12 trainers and 3 vets & 100% of them agreed that we may be doing more harm than good by not providing space, rest and alone time for our pets – Anxiety & further emotional agitation can ensue which may even lead to physical health problems, said 1 vet. So HOW is this take your pet to work trend that Petco is leading healthy for the pets? Perhaps it’s another crutch or the humans’ toxic way of using our pets for the wrong reasons. Is it entitlement for the pet owner or are they misinformed by these very campaign claims which are at best set forth based on the trivial self-interest of this company pushing this as the comeback solution post pandemic? ...I’m curious about this survey of 2001 participants in the midst of a pandemic where many, if not most people, are working from home offices & business travel has been exorbitantly reduced – I am curious what part of this survey takes into consideration the emotional and physical health of our dogs and cats? am I missing the point am I the only one that finds it appalling that companies like Petco want us to juxtapose our pets into a human stress relief mental health tool box as if they have no emotional needs ? we have so many available resources to help us handle stresses and anxieties but to add our pets to the mix along with the hammer and nail...(read more).

EP#48 - Dogs I Meet with Mindy Dutka
The last year has been filled with days of twists and turns and pivots and falls - Every conversation I've had during most of 2020 and now 2021 was with folks that have had the honor of sharing their homes with pets - The conversations had been mainly about the sense of calm and hope these animals consistently provided even during the most confusing and disturbing moments. In this episode I talk with Mindy Dutka about the animals and the people they are supporting during this historic year. There has also been an influx of new pet ownership and the stories that go along with both of these scenarios is what Mindy Dutka used as inspiration to create Tales of Support - If you are interested in sharing the story of how your pet helped you through the pandemic please reach out to Mindy Dutka at: Hello@DogsIMeet.com or go to DogsImeet.com for more information.

EP#44 - Moments Away From Being a Stray w/Genevieve Frederick
You can be a moment away from becoming a stray...
In July 2008, Feeding Pets of the Homeless, also known as Pets of the Homeless, received nonprofit status as a public charity. Feeding Pets of the Homeless provides various forms of assistance. Sometimes we simply offer an ear to listen to people’s experience of struggle in daily survival. Most frequently, we respond to requests for help: a) identifying where to find our sites that distribute pet food; b) funding and arranging to help an injured or ill pet; or c) sponsoring wellness clinics that provide a basic exam with vaccinations. Many times we are asked where to find a homeless shelter that will allow pets. From 2008 - 2020, Feeding Pets of the Homeless has paid more than $1,665,000 to provide veterinary emergency care and wellness clinic services to over 22,150 pets, and to purchase pet food and sleeping crates. The majority of distributed pet food is collected by our donation sites and volunteers then delivered to food banks, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and sometimes to the streets where the homeless assemble. Our donation sites have provided over 1,459,00 pounds of pet food, which translates into one less worry for a homeless person on any given day and a happy pet. We provide pet sleeping crates to shelters so the homeless can bring their pets in with them and receive the necessary social services that will help support them out of homelessness.
Monetary Gifts, Charitable Gifting through Trusts and Bequests, visit Ways to Give for other opportunities. All gifts are greatly appreciated and allow us to pay veterinary expenses and other costs associated with all our programs. We do not receive government funding and rely fully on private donations. Here we are. As I am evolving with this podcast I'm noticing that the whole conversation about pet food can become seriously intimidating which then creates an uncomfortable and defensive space...So as I jump into part 2 of the conversation about Pet food and DCM with Dr. Ryan Yamka and Nicci Cammack. I am hopeful the information provided here will help you have an enriched level of understanding of your ability to choose what's best for you without the algorithm, marketing, and opinion traps.

EP#38 - Part 1 of 2- DCM, Pet Food Recalls, Aflatoxins, Melamine, etc...IS IT ALL PREVENTABLE?
This is part 1 of the 2 part conversation with Dr. Ryan Yamka and Nicci Cammack. What started as a perspective and history of the rip-roaring pet industry fiasco about dilated cardiomyopathy naturally transitioned to capturing the pet food sectors disjointed claims of product quality, product integrity, as well as the industry's transactional leadership in pet food manufacturing - If you have listened to any of the previously posted episodes you will hear a continuous theme about pet food & that transparency is essentially non-existent - the constant message presented over multiple episodes focuses on the marketing jargon and promises of integrity that are just empty. It is unfortunate that the information fed to us via SM, bloggers, and some veterinarians are repeatedly based on opinion, therefore, tend to be consistently un-validated. DCM, Dilated cardiomyopathy started as a blog post by a vet and it took off as if cocaine was introduced to its core - it took off on SM with too many words and practically zero evidence of statistical support and corroboration of claims through peer-reviewed studies. What was being presented by, well, almost anyone involved was making it more than it actually was...yes and this does include the FDA - This should make every pet owner think twice about the choices made when purchasing their pets' next meal.
Video and data Dr. Yamka presented at VMX regarding DCM - It's a must-watch if you want the nitty-gritty.

EP# 33- Griffin's Heart with actress Reagan Pasternak
Unfortunately, I have experienced too many losses - it is inevitable - yet with the many losses, I am happy to say that I can jump high and give someone up there a high five for giving me the opportunity to open my home and my heart to those beings that are no longer with me in body.
I am not a fan of promoting 'stuff' - I have to believe in and validate the value of that 'thing' before I choose to present it to the people that have put their trust in me.
I have been gifted many books to help me heal and work through the passing of each of my animals (as well as human friends and family members) I was sent a copy of Griffin's Heart and asked if I would be interested in doing an interview with Reagan. So I read the book (it's short about 120 pages I think) and I did each of the exercises - I wasn't sure if it would be uncomfortable or boring or just cheesy - it was none of these things. It was mildly cathartic and sweet and I laughed to myself when a few of the prompts triggered some really funny memories of the little beasts that shared their lives with me. I hope you enjoy this interview. Here are the links to Griffin's Heart.

EP#32 - Bryan Heafy - What's Petco's agenda & why your dog shouldn't & doesn't trust you!
This is Bryan Heafy:
"To be physically, mentally, and emotionally present for someone and make them your focus. During this time, it is important to manage judgment while you are present with them.
One of the many wonderful things dogs do for us is to hold space for us. They don’t understand what is wrong, but they can simply be there for us in this caring but an otherwise neutral and judgment-free way. It is one of the many reasons we feel such a deep connected bond to them.
When it comes to when our dogs having a hard time, many humans have failed to learn how to return the favor for our dogs the same way they do for us. We pet them, console them, provide affection, and unintentionally validate their worries. Like our dogs do for us, it is often better for us to acknowledge that we don’t understand why they are upset but are present, focused on them, and otherwise neutral. We may know that it is a trip to the vet, fireworks, or a thunderstorm that is upsetting them, but we are not worried, so showing our dogs that we don’t understand their worry but support them is a really important way for us to teach them that there is nothing to worry about. It also sets them up to look at us as though we may in fact know a little something about what is worrisome and what is not. The dog across the street, not a problem, the chocolate we dropped on the ground… oh no!!!
When it gets right down to it, our dogs seem to know how to support us better than we know how to support them, but they are showing us how they would like us to do it, it’s just on us to master the skill of being present and being neutral. Next time your dog is nervous, skip the petting and try to find a more neutral approach and see how your dog responds… it may just be exactly what they need."

EP#28 - Marcel Blok of Change Stranamics

He served as President of Iams pet foods international from 1988 to 1992. He is a speaker and author. His articles can be found in the Pet Food Industry publication.
There are a lot of nuggets of information about the industry as a whole in this episode...here are a few very generalized quotes that take us into a deep and truthful conversation.
On innovation: "Nothing much has happened in the last 200 years..."
About pet food: "The origin of the pet food industry was to get rid of waste..."
"There is no regulation that defines human grade as far as I know. So-called feed grade is nutritionally no better or no worse than so-called human grade"
About pet industry marketing: "Claims made for pet food, or anti-claims were related to instilling fear..."
" What can we claim & how can we claim it without too much proof and still make it palatable"
About manufacturers: "we won't forget our independents. Those are the people that helped us in the past, now we are going to help them..." for sure.
Independent retailers: "As soon as the independents fulfill all of these requirements, needs and wants they stop being independent..."

Ep#24 - Dr. Rachel Geller Ed.D. Cat Behavior Counselor / Humane Education Specialist
Almost any cat behavior problem can be handled if the pet owner is willing to understand the cats' needs. In this episode, Dr. Rachel Geller Ed.D., Cat behavior counselor, and humane education specialist answers all my questions about kitty behavioral problems.
Our discussion starts with the hated litter box and furniture scratching problems which are two of the main causes of animal abandonment - many people actually open the door and just throw the cat out. No animal deserves this and this episode arms you with all of the tools you need to understand and resolve problems that arise because cat owners just don't know where to go and how to handle these sticky situations.
Let's face it, the internet and most pet retail stores are often not the best sources of accurate information especially when the pet owner is in a state of high-level frustration and is unsure how to even verbalize the various aspects of the problems that are occurring.
This episode walks you through the litter box and furniture scratching issues, cat on cat aggression, use of catnip, separation anxiety, and stress. Why laser toys are TERRIBLE and why the fishing pole toys are amazing.
Guess what, your cats are affected by the loss of predictability - you can relate, can't you? Isn't this something you experienced and perhaps became anxious from when Covid19 first hit home? For our cats it is real and it's often caused by stressors we do not even realize are stressors. Listen and learn - Dr. Geller is a wealth of information for all cat lovers, new cat owners, and those considering adding a kitty to their lives.

Ep#23-Fats Dlamini - Founder of Maneli Pets South Africa
Nhlanhla "Fats" Dlamini is the founder and CEO of Maneli Pets in South Africa and Nandi Pets Inc in the US. His company was the first African company to export pet food to the US. The company now exports to 12 countries while employing hundreds of people in his native South Africa.
Nandi means “delicious” in the Zulu language. Nandi treats are 100% African and this isn’t the only thing that makes them special. Their treats are made from sustainably sourced proteins free from hormones and routine antibiotics. All treats are made without artificial preservatives, added grains, or unnatural fillers. Each purchase of Nandi treats helps with keeping the South African communities working.
Here is a little more information about Fats:
Prior to founding Maneli Pets, Fats worked for McKinsey & Company for 5 years in their South African and U.S. offices, and also for Morgan Stanley as an investment banker in London. While at McKinsey, Nhlanhla "Fats" established the McKinsey-Golden Key scholarships for top achieving students at Wits University and the University of Cape Town.

EP#22 - Greg Tilford - Founder of Animal Essentials, Author, Lecturer, Teacher in the field of Veterinary Botanical Medicine
Greg Tilford founder of Animal Essentials is an author, lecturer, and teacher in the field of veterinary botanical medicine.
65 million pet owners used some sort of natural therapies to treat their pets – this # is from statistics gathered in 2006 – wow, 14 years ago. Today, with social media, celebrity pets, celebrity pet foods, celebrity pet health bloggers, documentaries about pet foods, and the most outspoken celebrities in the pet sector, yes, those celebrity holistic vets this number has probably skyrocketed by now.
So do we actually understand what natural means? Or what a holistic approach to health and wellness stands for?
This episode truly captures the facts about all of this.
As an author, teacher and entrepreneur Greg Tilford, has been in the world of natural health and wellness way before social media and certainly before everybody and their mother became an expert and a celebrity something or other. His knowledge is rooted in the application of using the earth's natural resources to heal. Greg’s insightful wisdom of the fundamentals of health and wellness will guide you to get on the right path for both you and your pets.

Ep#21 - Pharmacy and Raw Cat Food? It's called Fegnion.
I've known the founders of Fegnion for several years. Alma Dervisevic and Joe Scoleri are both doctors of pharmacy who are working in their filed of pharmacy and they are also manufacturing a truly high quality stand out raw cat food because they LOVE their animals and understand the value of a high-quality diet that is species-appropriate. It is this simple - I do not use this platform to promote brands - this is not a promo for their brand - this is about providing information for the pet owners so they can make informed choices when they shop for their pets food. There is just too much misinformation on the web and the pet food consumer seems more confused than informed. This is for the people that want to be able to choose based on real information - the people providing this information happen to be making raw cat food because of love and joy - that is real.

Ep#20 -Part 2- Jim Galovski- Let's Get real about Chewy and Saving Independent Pet retail
Retailers and pet owners: Demand education - ask questions - isn't it time we actually do something about animal health and welfare instead of just pretending? Pet retail: we cannot outrun a company like Chewy's. How many of you finally have an online store? That cannot be the only thing you're doing to keep your customers coming back - Indy's cannot outrun a company like Chewys if we are not standing out and if we are not being different - it's time to start being great, being informative and innovative - it's time to ask better questions and demand education and ask for support. We need to keep the independent pet businesses successful for the well being of the customers we are serving - I am a customer and I want to be able to go to my local store and have the option of buying products that are BETTER - that will help my animals thrive. This way of doing business will allow the brands that are running ahead and are concerned about animal welfare and the environment and the financial well being and growth of their customers - the independent pet retailers (and the consumer), come out on top.
Here is a great place to start:

Ep#19 -Part 1- Jim Galovski- Lets get real about Chewy & Saving the Independent Pet Retailers
Jim Galovski received his bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester in 1992. Over the next quarter-century, Jim worked at Nestle Purina, Mars Pet Care (Royal Canin), and Blue Buffalo in a variety of roles; from territory manager and team leader to Director of Global Supply Chain Solutions and Director of Veterinary Commerce. He also has consulted for a half dozen other pet food companies in various stages ranging from start-ups to established global players. Jim currently serves on the Advisory Boards of Bond Pets, LLC, and PetMio.
Here are the Chewyminator and the Is it too late to save the independent pet retailers articles that led me to this interview - The lessons for the indy's to be able to thrive can be found in both of these articles - Jim lays it out with detailed precision - I hope you read both of these articles and if you are an indy, get the Guardian brand into your stores and learn how to sell it along with other products you have in your freezers and products you cannot get online - start understanding what makes you, the independent retailer different and start playing big - stand out and stand apart from the rest...If you need help let me know ;) & please excuse all of the background noise between Jim's computer and NYC police sirens you get to be in our living rooms for these interviews. Nothing beats being real.

EP#18 - News & Tidbits w/ Lonnie Schwimmer
I asked Lonnie Schwimmer, CEO & founder of Koha Pet Food & Nootie products to join me in discussing an article just published in Pet Product News by David Lummis who is the lead pet market analyst for Packaged Facts, a division of MarketResearch.com, and author of Packaged FactsU.S. Pet Market Outlook, 2020-2021: Responding to the COVID-19 Impact:
The title of the article is: What will the Pet Industry Look Like After the COVID 19 Pandemic Subsides?
I read this article a few times hoping to see if there was anything I could take away from it as it pertained to myself and the independent pet retailers that are trying to maneuver and make it through the day-to-day.
You will certainly hear my thoughts but I wanted to also speak to and learn from someone who deals with the independent retailers, the distributors and the on-line platforms like Chewy's - Lonnie provides this perspective - here are two views of this article and the information it's providing and not providing.

EP#17 - Paul Allen - Founder & CEO of Woof Gang Bakery
Happy Independence day.
I love this episode - it is the epitome of what independence is about - leadership and teamwork.
This is what Paul and his team at Woof Gang Bakery have created for their franchisees. Yes, it's that simple.

EP# 16 -What the pet world needs now: Chris Roy
Doobert connects volunteers (almost 30,000) with organizations that need them. These volunteers act as transporters, foster homes, photographers, food suppliers, you name it... and they use Doobert to specify how they are able to help.
We support organizations (almost 5,000) with tools that they need to connect with and manage volunteers.
Some of the organizations Doobert works with are Best Friends Animal Society, Assistance Dogs International, Rescue Transport USA, English Setter Rescue Association, and many more.
Chris's vision for Doobert started as connecting the disparate organizations across the country to safely move animals to where they need to go for adoption or placement to adding fosters, feeders, TNR, adoptions, and more.
The goal is to make it easy for potential adopters to find their perfect new family member online, complete the application and purchase requirements (like food, litter boxes, collars, etc...) and then safely deliver the animal to their new home.
With more than 800,000 companion animals needlessly killed in the U.S. each year, more and more people are looking to adopt instead of buying through pet stores and breeders and Doobert is making a seamless experience possible by integrating the technology that the organizations need to connect them with the people looking to adopt and volunteer.
Doobert is about supporting the ongoing relationships that volunteers want to have with organizations and the relationships that adopters want to have with organizations that helped save their animals.
Doobert is looking for sponsors that believe in our life-saving work and that want to contribute towards completing our vision including no healthy and treatable animals dying in shelters when there are loving homes in other communities. Animal shelters should be resources to their communities and provide support including low-cost veterinary services, safety nets for families needing food and supplies for their animals, and education and professional support for the care of all animals in their community, owned or wild. The vision is to create a new revenue model for these shelter and rescue organizations that are not dependent solely on donations or government funding, and that supports how people purchase products and services for their pets.
Technology is not the only piece of the puzzle however technology provides a significant enabler towards reaching these goals and bridging the gaps that exist today. We know our sponsors want to reach passionate animal lovers, both volunteers & professionals that are focused on helping animals and the people who care for them and we plan to be the company that provides that connection at every capacity.

Ep#15 - Brand Makers - What it takes to get brands to market
Today's episode is all about what it takes to get pet products through the distribution channels, into the hands of retailers, and of course to the consumers.
My interview with Kristy Menner and Kyle Wessels of Legacy Solutions has so much great information for pet brands that want to know what it takes to maneuver the pet sector. Their extensive backgrounds in distribution and manufacturing may help guide those that are interested in entering this sector or for those that don't have the resources to bring on a full sales team to manage the process of getting their brand the recognition it needs to create value for retailers and a place on every store shelf.

-94% of the time it doesn't work out, owners don't make good employees...
-Our people are our biggest secret weapon
-Co-op on steroids
- Own who you are
-If you over-promote the curbside and on-line right now you are commoditizing what is unique about the independents...
-Your loyalty is to your customers, your employees, and yourself...

EP#9 Intolerance or allergies?
Science has shown that most of our immune system (and our pets) is found in the digestive tract.
The digestive tract is also where much of the inflammatory reactions occur be it flatulence, nausea, vomiting, stomach aches...this happens when the body is trying to defend itself from what it perceives as a threat. This inflammatory reaction is the body's way of protecting and healing but our first reaction to this response is to suppress it by placing a big old band on it. It's hard to watch your pet lick their paws non stop or scratch their bodies into oblivion or have diarrhea every few days - it's hard to witness their discomfort and be stuck in a state of helplessness. Many veterinarians and doctors still have a rigid thought pattern when it comes to the distinction between allergies and intolerances which may lead us to take the wrong path when it comes to choosing what actions to take to help our pets heal.
It's a bit of a tight rope for doctors - we can't blame them for the missteps or the trials and errors. This podcast is about avoiding those missteps and hopefully getting to the core of what is causing the discomfort for your pet.

EP#5 - Pet Retail Series with Point Loma Pet Pantry, San Diego, CA
I decided to do a pet retail series because as business owners the challenges we face within each of our regions and within our own minds are so incredibly different. Although I am in NYC I make choices that are completely different than my counterpart who is located a short few miles away - whether it is because of our beliefs or our business models or just the way we see our worlds evolving and the place we are in our lives...
As small business owners, we have the ability to pivot quickly when hit with adversity.
The only time I felt I couldn’t pivot and move onward was when I allowed fear to overtake my thoughts. The ‘what if’s’ were nothing short of worthless but fear caused these thoughts to have value hence causing an absolute breakdown of movement and functionality.
So much is shifting and so quickly. I feel I am busier now than when my retail store was fully operational… this is because I am pivoting and assessing everything from where I left off on 3/20/2020 to the space I want to be moving toward.
Speaking with fellow pet business owners has been enlightening and energizing. It certainly has made me feel less alone. Everyone has their individual stories with many similarities and just as many differences.
Most of us have chosen to fast track and pivot by expanding our digital footprints or by taking initiative on social media and engaging with our customers with genuine regard for their pets needs while being present for them and providing them with all of their pets' necessities during this time when they need us most.
We have always needed our customers, probably more than they realize. Perhaps, now, they may view our value in the community a little differently …perhaps there will be consistent support for the small businesses in the neighborhoods - I am foolishly hopeful that the resurgence of this support will continue. Although I am hopeful – I cannot get cocky - the consumers’ menu will always include companies like Chewys and Amazon as options but perhaps pet retail is growing up and catching up and will be a force that will challenge the ‘big’ web guys, as we are the ones consistently here supporting our communities of pets and pet owners.
Thank you to Samantha Sarsilmaz of Point Loma Pet Pantry for taking the time to speak with me. https://pointlomapetpantry.com/

EP#4 - Pet Retail Series with Paw Print Pantry - Niantic, CT
Thank you to Jennifer Mohr of Paw Print Pantry of Niantic, CT. I hope I didn't torture you too much :) https://pawprintpantry.com/
