Te Whē - Bonus Ep with Ramon Te Wake & Hāmiora Bailey
We’ve been reflecting on the importance of Whakapapa while sitting with this special bonus episode of our Te Whē podcast. Takatāpui elders have left a legacy of excellence and pride from the very first gay liberation protest - these change makers and visionaries worked informed by the efforts of our shared elders, and blazed the trail for us to create our own pride.
In this bonus episode of Te Whē we talk to Ramon Te Wake, a mokopuna of movements and a tuakana for the queer arts. We discuss Ramon’s legacy, her interdisciplinary practice and illustrious career, the importance of understanding our tuakiri and protecting ourselves with toolkits, and the joy that is being in relationship with our forebears.
Ramon has been a dancer, a singer, a show host on “Takatāpui” by Māori Television (2004) and an aclaimed director. without her efforts in championing and recording our collective history Te Tīmatanga would not have been able to exist. To use her own analogy of the future of Queer Arts, if Ramon is on the train we’re never getting off.

Te Whē - Episode 6: Te Ira Tangata with Tu Chapman & Hāmiora Bailey
Representing intersex people at the United Nations, creating and hosting Wānanga Takātapui 2022 discussion on moko, belonging to Hui Takatāpui ki Mataatua, Tu Chapman is an advocate and leader for Takatāpui across the Motu and the global stage. Tu was instrumental in the birth of Te Tīmatanga and helped steer the kaupapa enabling it to be what it ultimately became. As a Rangatira Tu is generous with her kōrero and inspires listeners to understand that through whakapapa, we belong.

In the fifth episode of Te Whē our Kaiwhakahaere Takatāpui Hāmiora speaks with Atarangi Anderson (Te Aitanga a Hauiti, Ngati Hauiti) a multidisciplinary artist most well known for their painting & barkcloth making. For Te Tīmatanga Atarangi created a work titled Te Āhuru Mōwai using Aute (Barkcloth), Kōkōwai and Kauri gum - this episode explores her connection to whenua and how she creates her pieces.
