Health Care Advocates Can Help With That!
Veterans who deployed to a combat zone but never enrolled in VA health care, you may be eligible if you left active duty between September 11, 2001, and October 1, 2013, even if you never filed a disability claim. PACT ACT Intent to File Deadline Looms
Did you know Texas Veterans Commission Claims Benefits Advisors have filed over 80 thousand PACT Act Claims? If you still have to file yours, do this first. Submit your “Intent to File” to the VA on or before August 9, 2023. That way if your claim is approved, compensation is backdated to August 2022. You get a years’ worth of retroactive pay! But only if you file the claim or the “Intent to File” on or before August 9, 2023. No need to complete the claim yet, you’ll have a year from your intent. The Military Veteran Peer Network Helps Veterans Succeed
Our Veterans Mental Health department provides excellent services to veterans, their families and mental health providers and supporters.. We offer a justice-involved veteran’s program, collaborate with local communities to prevent veteran suicide and combat veteran homelessness. We provide training in military cultural competency and educate law enforcement and first responders on deescalating veteran interactions. Additionally, we have a Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN) led by a manager who was once helped by the network. Women Veterans Get a Special Call to Join AVAFest
The Austin Veteran Arts Festival, AVAFest, returns for 2023. This fall the public gets another chance to learn about veterans who have found that the road to healing is paved with their creative spirit. Artworks from paintings to poetry, sculpture to sewing, comedy to crafting, whatever veterans have found helpful, will be exhibited during AVAFest. There is no entry fee. This year there is a new category, Military Women Surviving. Listen to find out more.

Homeless Veterans are a Top Concern for the Veterans Mental Health Department
Our Veterans Mental Health Department offers a number of services to help veterans and their families. The Homeless Veterans Program works within local communities to improve access to resources and services to military veterans and their loved ones who are experiencing homelessness or are at-risk of becoming homeless. PTSD Awareness Month
In addition to connecting veterans in need directly to local services, our Veterans Mental Health Department also works with partners at the national, state, and local level to address veteran-specific issues including suicide prevention/intervention, veteran homelessness, peer support services, military-related trauma, and justice involvement. Celebrating Women Veterans 2023
Women Veterans Day is June 12, celebrating the day President Truman signed the bill allowing women to join the regular US Armed Forces. It has been 75 years since that law was signed. In 2017, Governor Greg Abbott designated June 12 Women Veterans Day in Texas. Celebrations are happening all over Texas including San Antonio where TVC dropped in. The Texas Veterans Commission Women Veterans Program is ready to help women veterans get their benefits and meet their sister veterans. Be a Part of the Military Women's Memorial!
Three million women have served with the U.S. Armed Forces since the American Revolution. You probably know a woman who served. The Military Women’s Memorial is giving those women and their families a place to tell their stories. The Memorial was created “to record and preserve stories that will otherwise be lost to history and unknown to future generations”. Featuring interactive exhibits, an education center and a collection of stories from women, the Memorial is in Arlington, Virginia but you can also visit virtually. TVC Grantee Baylor Scott and White Offers Free Mental Health Services to Veterans and their Families
Baylor Scott and White and their Warrior Research Institute is one of our Fund for Veterans' Assistance grantees. Thanks to that grant, they can provide free mental health services to veterans and eligible family members across the state via Telehealth. VA pensions provide monthly payments to qualified veterans, surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children. Recipients must meet eligibility requirements and certain income limits set by Congress. Meet FVA Grantee "AYUDA"!
AYUDA, a nonprofit that helps El Paso area veterans with home repairs and modifications, was awared a $100,000 Fund for Veterans' Assistance grant this year. This grant will enable disabled veterans and their family members to stay in their homes. Do you know of a nonprofit anywhere in Texas, that could use grant money to help the veterans they serve? Tell them, "NOW is the time to apply for next year's grants". The deadline to turn in all the paperwork is Dec 5, 2022! Get started with your application before it's too late. It is all done online. Breast Cancer Support Group
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, learn what you can about screening, diagnosis and treatment. Support groups are there for patients and survivors to meet and share their experiences. Virtual support groups allow individuals to share from wherever they are. Dianna Petrick, of the Breast Cancer Resource Center talks with, Sharron Stewart, Texas Veterans Commission Women Veterans Coordinator for South Texas about the support group offered by the Breast Cancer Resource Center. Women veterans, active duty and family members who have been diagnosed with breast cancer are invited to join the monthly support meetings, the second Tuesday of the month at seven pm. Hiring Red White and You! 2022
Hiring Red White and You! (HRWY) is the biggest statewide hiring event of the year, taking place November 1-18 in venues all over Texas. Virtual and in person. Texas Veterans Commission is now taking applications for next year's Fund for Veterans' Assistance Grants. Applications must be submitted by Dec 5, 2022. Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 2022
Spreading the word about Breast Cancer; early detection, treatment and support is what this month is all about. The National Breast Council Foundation has a theme, RISE! "This year we RISE to ensure every woman has access to the screenings she needs and the support she deserves. When we RISE, we Rally in Screening Everyone."
Texas Veterans Commission talked with two veterans who are also Breast Cancer Survivors. We discuss their diagnosis, treatment and their advice for others about early detection.

What is Happening at The Austin Veteran Arts Festival 2022?
The Austin Veteran Arts Festival, (AVAFEST), 2022 begins October 12 and runs through November 12. We talk with festival founder Glenn Towery about his "Art Healing Journey" and what to expect at the festival. We also talked with two Festival volunteers about their parts in AVAFEST, Words Unite Bookstore and Help Heal Veterans.
