YOUr Journey Matters
Lindsay Titus is a passionate, influential educator specializing in the field of behavior analysis. She is driven every single day to teach other educators how to redefine what success looks like for the students we work with every day. Her ultimate goal as a behavior specialist is to inspire other educators to recognize that all students have a story to share.
With experience as a classroom teacher and her current role as a K-12 behavior specialist, Lindsay also has experience working in residential, and private settings. Lindsay shares her passion through her experiences to guide, motivate, and encourage other educators to do the same. To use their own personal stories to create connections and relationships with others.
In addition to being a board-certified behavior analyst with a Master’s in Special Education, Lindsay is also an educational coach working with educators across the country through DEFINE YOUniversity. Through the various roles she serves, Lindsay works every day to share simple yet strategic tools and strategies with educators so they too can feel confident in who they are as educators and strengthen the connections with their students every single day.
What story do you have?
I quit teaching 1 month shy of finishing my 5th year. I became the statistic of special education teachers who burnt out within 5 years. And it wrecked me. And at the same time, it validated a belief I held for myself since childhood. And that was I wasn’t born with confidence and that was the reason why I couldn’t do things. I lived a fixed mindset life for decades. After trying out different types of jobs in the education field (private, public, residential), I finally decided there must be an easier way. And at that same time, I came across a mindset coach, and thought, why not, I’ve tried everything else. Let’s try this. And to be honest, while I was hopeful, I really didn’t think it would work. But it did. Through the process of what I know call inner work, I found myself. I found my light. I found my purpose and passion. And everything else felt easy. Life became fun. My job became purposeful. And life became what I had always wished it could be. I had taken my future dreams and goals and turned them into my present-day reality. And now I have the honor of coaching the same transformations in educators today through DEFINE YOUniversity.
I resonate with the concept that leadership is not a title or a specific role. It isn’t something we are born with. It’s a verb, its action, it’s something we continue to grow each and every day through the power of listening and learning. My goal in any role I serve is to lead myself to creating the best life possible for me that aligns with my mission, my vision, values, and standards, so that I can help coach others to find the same for themselves, no matter what age they may be.
What leadership topics interest you?The idea of coaching and leading through the use of questions is a major focus of my role this year as a behavior specialist. Staying out of the advice trap is so important, and something I am practicing each day at work and through my own business. I’m also in my coursework for administration and am learning how important it is to lead myself before I can lead others. Having the confidence in who I am as a person, has helped me lead others while continuing to listen and learn from others every day.

S2E21: Blow Up The Box
Ryan Scott
Relationships are what most inspire me on a day-to-day basis; adult/students/community members/parents. Also, I LIVE to BLOW up the box. If schooling looks exactly like we lived through, something is wrong.
I can also talk about the life-changing effects of mistakes. When I was 22, I became a day unexpectedly and that COMPLETELY changed the course of my life. This is why I LOVE my students that come to us with challenges.
Proud #girldad of 4 and husband of a spunky redhead! Spent 10 years in elementary land as a teacher and 2 years as a principal. For the past 2 years, I have been a high school AP where I have learned that even if they are bigger, hairier and look like adults, high school is still full of kids that want to be valued, seen, and heard!
My unconventional path to education led me to see “struggles” as “opportunities” and the “challenging kids” as just kids with “challenges”!
As the host of The bigEDidea Podcast, I hope to connect the visions of one, with the passions of another. It is only through building connections, that the world can truly be changed!

S2E15: What's The Question
Guest: Connie Hamilton
BIO:
Connie Hamilton Ed.S. has 25 years in education as teacher, instructional coach, elementary/secondary principal and K-12 district administrator. She is an international educational consultant and presenter, and the author of two books, including her latest, Hacking Questions.
Teachers describe her workshops as meaningful and engaging as she models quality instructional methods that can be used in the classroom tomorrow. She applies her deep understanding of pedagogy in workshops such as Questioning, Formative Assessment, Student Engagement, Feedback, and more.
Connie spends most of her year facilitating classroom observations in a collaborative setting so teachers can learn from one another as they implement new strategies with students. She brings these experiences to her workshops to help teachers put research into practice in ways that make sense.
Book: Hacking Questions
Website: https://conniehamilton.net/
I wrote Hacking Questions to be very concrete and immediately transferable. So, I’d hope educators would see the application without much mental effort. But as they’re implementing and trying new twists on what are often standard practices, I hope they’re asking questions like:
- What students am I not reaching with this approach?
- How is my questioning impacting the rapport with individual students and the culture in my learning space?
- Why are some students responding and others are not? Is there a pattern?
- What biases surface through the way I deliver and respond to questions?

S2E14 - The Principal's Toolbox
Dr. Justin Thomas
Bio: Justin Thomas, Ed.D., is an elementary school principal serving students, faculty, and community near Nashville, TN. Prior to his work in school administration, he enjoyed 8 years as a middle school and high school band director.
During his 6-year tenure as principal, his school team has been recognized multiple times by the Tennessee Department of Education for outstanding student growth and achievement gap closure. Dr. Thomas believes that the keys to success revolve around growth and gratitude - the ideas that all members of a school can 'get better', and that a spirit of thankfulness is key to strong culture.
Dr. Thomas is the author of "The Principal's Toolbox: Real Talk on Tackling School Leadership" (2020). Noticing an abundance of philosophical books about leadership, his purpose in writing The Principal's Toolbox was to take an honest look at many of the practical aspects of the principalship. Aspiring and new principals will find this title especially helpful.
Dr. Thomas is married (Susan) and they enjoy their busy life with 3 daughters in Nashville.
Show Notes: I think a great school focuses on growth and gratitude. Every person - child or adult - is at a different place on their journey. As a teacher, as a friend, as a mathematician, as a writer, as a coach. Our only goal should be to compare ourselves with ourselves - Where was I yesterday? Where am I today? The growth is what matters.
Gratitude - There is so much good going on around us, but we fall into the trap of talking about/focusing on the problems. Intentionally seeking the good and calling it out improves your life and lets others know that their contribution is seen and worth something.
Story - I decided to write this book because I kept having experiences that I was never told to expect, and I would have been better prepared had I at least thought about them ahead of time. They are situations that I feel every principal will encounter, and I hope that considering them will make the principalship a bit less overwhelming - especially in the early going

Dr. Rachael George
From fighting wildland fires with the U.S. Forest Service to putting out fires in the classroom, education was the last place that Rachael thought she’d end up. S2E9: Love Leadership
An accomplished, dedicated and visionary leader with 25 years of experience teaching and leading the operational, planning, administrative and management practices in public schools. I have transformed a school that historically secluded scholars to one that became fully inclusive. Now I am in the midst of turning around a learning environment that was on a trend of low academic performance to one that inspires growth in scholars, families and staff.
-Turnaround schools, leading a school that was rated an F by the state of Texas
-Shaping the vision and mission of a school that has deep rooted traditions
Trista DeLaCruz - He led the staff in developing a new mission and vision our first year together that we then built on the second year when we faced some huge challenges with state accountability. Overall I would say his greatest asset as a leader is his ability to bring a staff together in a difficult situation and keep their focus on student needs. Due to his unwavering belief in all students and adults our data showed that our students grew more than almost every other elementary campus in our district this last year. #growingtogether
Ashley Garza - Something that sets Mr. Masini apart from other leaders is that he is truly a servant leader! He makes the stressful part of teaching less stressful through the encouragement and modeling of opportunities to be a successful educator. He is always a willing volunteer and chooses to be alongside the teachers whether that be in trainings or at school events, he is always there. His attitude and understanding of the demands placed on staff go above and beyond and he is willing to be a listening ear to the struggles while helping guide to solutions and then is mindful in celebrating those small wins!
Heather Perkl - It was one of the first days of school at Bruce Vento Elementary and Scott Masini’s debut address as a new principal. The kids were wiggly and talkative, knowing this would be another lecture about how to act and follow CARES, be nice and work hard. It would have been easy to play it safe as a newcomer. But Mr. Masini didn’t play it safe and he didn’t talk about expectations. He started by saying something like this, “Over the summer, I talked to every teacher, every staff member in this building. I want you to know something. (Pause) YOUR- teachers-LOVE-you.” In that room of hundreds of kids and teachers, it was suddenly silent. In that one sentence, he framed how we felt and what we believed about our work. I have never heard a principal mention the word love so powerfully and effectively as Mr. Masini did on that day. It pulled us together as a community when we needed it most.

S2E8: Assume the Good, Doubt the Bad
Entering his twenty-first year in education, Dave has earned a reputation for being a disruptor of the status quo, an innovator, and a change agent. Having served as a classroom teacher, school-based administrator, central office director, and now professor of Educational Leadership, he often uses real-life stories and examples of his own life and career to describe why and how we need to confront “the way we have always done it.”
He has written multiple books, including “It’s Like Riding a Bike: How to make learning last a lifetime”, “Bold Humility”, and “Making Assessment Work for Educators Who Hate Data but Love Kids”. He speaks, consults, and partners with districts around the country and loves to keep learning and growing.

She brings over 12 years of experience at the middle and high school levels as a teacher, instructional coach, and STEM program director. Mrs. Padula-George leads with heart, responsibility, and the mentality of putting students first. Her mindset has resulted in a track record of student growth and achievement. "Nicole has created strong data metrics for us to pinpoint, diagnose, and correct students' strengths and weaknesses per standard, but it isn't as robotic as it sounds. She's carved out a warm approach where she collaborates individually with each teacher to create unique approaches depending on a specific teacher's strength supported on the very strong foundation of data. It's a continuously iterative process. What works, what doesn't, why does it work, why does it not, how can we adapt, how can we innovate? She asks a lot of questions that do not dictate the methods we choose to use but she makes sure that the methods we do elect are effective." - Lanre Anima
4 Principles of Leadership:
Let who you are be the North Star.
- Define (Values, purpose, non-negotiables, strengths, areas of growth, learning style, conflict management style - Why am I here?), Accept (Who you are is enough)
- Who you are guides decision making = anchor
- Ongoing process of refinement
- Be genuine/authentic
Be steadfast with the destination, but leave the journey open.
- Set a clear vision
- Communicate that vision and asks (expectations)
- Provide a few pathways (ideas/solutions/frameworks)
- Create opportunities and spaces for authentic input and varied collaboration (teacher/leader, teacher/teacher, teacher/culture, etc.)
- Empower others through maximizing their strengths to share their ideas and have their individuality shine
- People are more likely to take a risk with something they do well/confident in
- Multiply and enhance impact by delegating -> not “doing it all” yourself
- Empower others through maximizing their strengths to share their ideas and have their individuality shine
- Do not lower the bar through the process, find another way to reach it
Listening and doing speak louder than words
- Equal your listening and action, speak wisely
- Ask questions (not make assumptions) to gain understanding
- Walk the walk, not just talk the talk (with next step, collaborate/do it side by side with the teacher while still developing, not sit in classroom, behind a computer and share feedback at a later date -> urgency)
- Be transparent and provide rationale, lean into tough conversations - connect to Brene Brown’s quote: “Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind”
Pause. Celebrate. Evaluate. Fail. (Not necessarily in that order.)
- You will not know everything. You will never and that is ok (way it should be)
- Failure is part of the process
- Pause to:
- Celebrate the small wins
- Reflect/evaluate/pulse check
- Action (next steps)
- Celebrate the small wins

S2E6: The Better Mindset
Chad Ostrowski is the CEO and Co-Founder of the Teach Better Team.
"I have dedicated my professional career to helping schools be better. While I’m not an administrator I work closely with administrators, teachers and stakeholders across the country to help them improve schools. This is possible from building trust, relationships and providing solutions to their needs that produce results. Hearing a student in a classroom tell me they’ve never loved schools so much or a principal sharing that they’ve gotten their school out of academic emergency through our work drives my motivation to do more."
Topics Discussed:
- Building a team
- Defining a mission
- Trusting others to execute
- Never allowing excuses

S2E4: Everything and Everyone Matters
James Ryan is the proud building Principal of Maplemere Elementary School in the Sweet Home Central School District (Amherst, New York). James started his career as a social studies teacher at Sweet Home High School in 2007, worked as a Dean of Students at Sweet Home Middle School, and has most recently transitioned into his current role. The theme of Maplemere Elementary is "Where Every Child Has a Champion", based on Rita Pierson's powerful TEDtalk. James has been married for ten years to Lauren (an educator who he would describe as "far superior to him"). Jim and Lauren have two children Charlotte (8 years old) & Griffin (2 years old).
"I have been a self-contained teacher for 10 years. I work with students with autism and intellectual disabilities- it is very easy to feel like you are on an island and in fact that is how I felt most of my career. I haven't felt true inclusivity from a principal (and I have worked for 3) until Jim Ryan came to Maplemere. From day 1, he advocated for our students to be able to participate in SABAH (a program that provides adaptive ice skating for students in the winter and ends in a performance at the Buffalo Sabres hockey arena). He has laced up his own skates and taken to the ice to help ensure that my students felt comfortable, confident and safe - what administrator does that?? He rallied over 40 staff, district administrators and community members to come and watch our final performance on a Saturday when school is the furthest thing from anyone's mind. When Maplemere was announced, a large roar erupted from the crowd, I had several teachers come to me from other districts saying how special our Maplemere community is- this is a true testament to Jim Ryan. Since becoming principal at Maplemere our self-contained students have also been afforded opportunities to show their gen ed peers how truely amazing they are. These opportunities include being able to host a leadership assembly for the entire school, participate in afterschool clubs with gen ed peers and take on various leadership roles throughout our building- all of which Jim was right beside them cheering them on. Jim has "celebrity status" in my room- the minute he walks in the door I'm lucky if I can keep instruction going as the kids usually rush to the door to give him a hug or a high five- relationships are important to him and it shows. He treats my non-verbal students the same way he treats our gen ed kids, and this is with respect and dignity. I think what makes Jim different then most is that to him inclusion is not simply tolerating the presence of our self-contained students- it is unquestioned acceptance. I am thankful everyday to work alongside someone who sees the beauty and ability in my students as much as I do." - Mrs. Pisarek
"At my first staff meeting as a teacher, and Mr. Ryan’s first staff meeting as principal of Maplemere, Mr. Ryan showed a TED talk with a message from Rita Pierson, a message that “every child deserves a champion”. I think the biggest thing that makes Mr. Ryan an outstanding principal is that not only do our students at Maplemere have champions in their teachers and in our principal, but we as teachers have a champion in Mr. Ryan.
As a first year teacher last year, I was eager but nervous. Mr. Ryan was supportive of me, provided me with opportunities to grow, and pushed me to develop my own authentic way of being an educator and advocate for students. He is not only a mentor, but a leader who guides our school in a way where everyone is valued. Mr. Ryan recognizes and capitalizes on the talents of each person in our building - teachers, classroom aides, program aides, guest teachers, and students." -Ms. Campanaro

S2E3: Ready For A New Challenge
Deanna Moore White is a Gulf War Veteran who trained as a Hospital Corpsman, Medical Technologist, Autopsy Technician and Histotechnologist in the United States Navy before pursing her B.S.degreee in Biology. During her junior year in college , she started substituting and found her passion for education. She severed as a middle and high school science teacher before moving into an administrative role as a an Assistant Principal at the high school and elementary level. Currently she is pursuing her Ed. S. in Educational leadership and Ed.D. in Education System Improvement Science. Deanna is a passionate leader who believes education is the key to opportunity.
Education is very powerful. Education levels the playing field for individuals internationally. It is my passion to ensure that students receive the best education possible. As a visionary leader, I see possibilities that cannot be seen when you grow up in a dysfunctional home with abusive, alcoholic, literate or helicopter parents. Although parenthood doesn’t come with a manual, navigating the world is possible with the ability to read, understand what you read, asking strategic questions and being proactive instead of reactive. We can start the podcast off with bang by letting everyone know I am a United States Navy Veteran that served in the Gulf War. I served as a Hospital Corpsman, Medical Technician and a Histology Technician. This was my first career in the United States Navy, where I learned to do autopsies and identify parts of the human body using DNA during horrific accidents so parents, wifes, mothers, sisters, aunts and uncles could bury their loved ones. I discovered education while studying as a pre-med student and obtaining my Bachelors of Science degree in Biology during my Junior year of college when I substituted two to three days a week. Each time I substituted, Administrators and Assistant Principals continued to call me to come back to their school. No matter what school I substituted at during that time, I was asked to return. I was offered over ten teaching positions before graduating from college. After talking with my career counselor about the teaching profession and talking with my mentor about the stigma at the time, “Teachers don’t make no money,” I received the best advice I ever heard, “ If you find something you love, “ you will make money.” I graduated and enrolled in three summer classes on education during the summer. I was committed and determined that education was my true passion and desire.
Informational leadership interests me the most. Informational leaders research, prepare and strategically solve problems. Rarely are they impulsive and reactive to situations. Asking questions, looking for solutions and making difficult decisions at their strengths, but being compassionate sometimes is difficult. As an Informational leader, I strive to make human connections to support an individuals strengths so they become better from our interaction.

Holli Hudson on Alicia Ray:
Alicia Ray is a ray of sunshine who sprinkles a bit of sparkle wherever she goes. In fact, I have given her the nickname #tinkerbell because she is always smiling, with a bit of an attitude. I approach her with an idea for a math lesson that I am planning and she just makes it better infusing the idea with technology and real-world connections. Her ideas and encouragement that she gives make me want to be a better teacher. Our school, students, and staff are lucky to have her. She is constantly working on making the media center a better learning space for all. I look forward to her media professional developments, where I leave with new ideas and refreshed energy.
