Ep. 62: GiveToGet with Jon Mardis
Imagine being surrounded by people who want to help you land your preferred job and being proactively approached by several employers trying to recruit you. Your next job starts with GiveToGet. Join host Nick Koziol as we learn from Jon Mardis how GiveToGet is Revolutionizing the Job Transition World.
About Jon Mardis, Founder GiveToGet
Email: jon@givetoget.us
LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/jonathan-mardis-mba
Jon Mardis is the Founder of a Revolutionary Talent Acquisition Solution called GIVETOGET - Cincinnati Born & Raised, went to St. X and UC Grad and has an MBA in Finance & Marketing.
The motto at his high school was “men for others” and it stuck with him in life and career. He found that this life-guiding principle was far less common than he had hoped or expected, and it was this M.O. that inspired a vision and decision to leave a successful 20-year career as a leader in financial services to create something unique. Mardis saw a HUGE opportunity and is fired up to talk about it!
In 2019, Mardis was entrenched in the job transition world as a Managing Director and lead recruiter for a firm when he experienced firsthand the problems that he was attempting to solve. Job seekers don’t help job seekers, lack social networks and connections to get referred to employers and resort to job boards as there’s no external platform dedicated to providing warm introductions into employers. Employers are disconnected from talent and focus too much on sourcing on job boards. Talent acquisition isn’t personal, yet referrals are the #1 source of talent acquisition.
His concept and approach would disrupt a stale and fragmented industry but had no idea after going dormant in 2020, that in 2021, HR tech would be the latest craze for innovation and capital. If he didn’t recognize that talent acquisition isn’t personal and job transition is inefficient and takes personal actions to fill these voids, Mardis wouldn’t have taken the initiative to launch his company in March 2021. Mardis is excited about the journey and in love with the problems that they are solving.

What happens to a young family when they lose a father, husband, and provider? The spouse and kids are often lost in trying to make sense of that missing piece and what to do to move forward. Struggling single parents face the enormous challenge of providing their families with the essentials and often with very little support. This happened to Dylan Walker and his family when his father, Scott, passed away from cancer. It wasn’t an easy journey but the Walker family made it through. Not only that they created hope for others like them. They started the Scott T. Walker Foundation to honor the legacy of their father and so that single parents families wouldn’t face this challenge alone.

His passion of helping individuals roles over into the work he does in his free time. The Walker family founded a non-profit to help improve the lives of others. They want to help families like ours. Dylan’s family lost their loving father and husband at the young age of 42. He battled cancer for four years and unfortunately lost the fight. They were left with a widowed mother who at the time was only a part-time employee at Walmart. Through the support of family and friends, the Walker Family could pick themselves up and continue to push forward. Dylan wanted to do the same thing for similar families who have gone through the same type of loss. The mission of the Scot T. Walker Foundation is to raise money to help single-parents pay rents, car payments, athletic costs, academic costs, and therapy costs. The Walker Family know from experience that there are others with so much potential, and we want to help people unlock that potential. Being dealt a bad hand should not cause families to crumble, so hopefully with the support from this foundation will the help others to stand tall.

Episode 39: 13thirty Cancer Connect
Teens and young adults have many challenges in this world. They are starting things like high school, college, and their first real job. The stress of peer pressure alone can be enough to make some crumble. Add a cancer diagnosis and this group can often find themselves isolated and unsure of where to turn. 13thirty Cancer Connect is unlike most cancer support organizations. They concentrate efforts on a targeted national problem that affects approximately 89,000 young people in the US each year. Executive Director, Lauren Spiker, founded this organization because her daughter Melissa’s last request was that her mother uses what she had learned to “make a difference, to make things better." Melissa’s legacy is a community of supporters that make huge impacts in the lives of young adults and their families. Join host Nick Koziol with guests Lauren Spiker and Steve Esposito (13thirty Cancer Connect, Program Director) to learn more about how this terrific organization makes a difference.

Since its beginning (first called Melissa’s Living Legacy Teen Cancer Foundation), 13thirty has become an internationally known and respected leader in the field of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer because of our strong passion, clear vision, and steadfast commitment to a singular focus – teens and young adults with cancer.
Unlike many other cancer support organizations, we concentrate our efforts and resources on a targeted national problem that affects approximately 89,000 young people in the United States each year. Scoops and Scripture is a nonprofit ministry that focuses on the heart of the community by going to different places such as nursing homes, children's homes, adult day care centers, women/men rehab facilities, veteran's homes, etc, and building relationships with the residents there. We go bi-weekly or monthly, depending on what the volunteers can do, and have what we call a "Scoops gathering" that consists of devotion, singing, prayer, taking pictures, door prizes, and of course, a big ice cream party! That is the overall gist. It's all about loving and serving and sharing hope.

Episode 31: J-Mac's First Game Was The Miracle Night
In this episode of TST, we talk to Jim Johnson, a high school basketball coach with experience in winless seasons, multiple championship teams, and some of his players that have made it to the NBA. Every game has historical moments where a player or players are so in the zone that they perform amazing feats. Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger's sack for Notre Dame, Team USA Hockey winning Olympic Gold in 1980, baseball's Ron Necciai throwing a nine-inning no-hitter with 27 strikeouts, and basketball's Wilt Chamberland's 100 point game. Coach Johnson created a special moment like Coach Devine for Rudy, he made J-Mac's dream come true when he put him in his first basketball game. What happened in the last few minutes of that final game which honored seniors was nothing less than a miracle.

On Feb. 15, 2006, Coach Johnson made the kindhearted gesture of inserting his autistic manager, Jason McElwain, now known to the world as J-Mac into Greece Athena High School’s final home game, which the Trojans won 79-43. J-Mac scored 20 points in just over four minutes, including six three-point baskets, to become an instant national celebrity. Coach Johnson, also, was featured in major news outlets around the country. To make the Hollywood ending complete, Greece Athena captured the first Section V title of Coach Johnson’s career a few weeks later. A second sectional crown followed in 2007, and Coach Johnson then coached the Trojans to their third straight league title in 2008 by posting a perfect 12-0 record in league play, netting Coach of the Year honors. Coach Johnson has made a number of radio and television appearances, including the Oprah Winfrey and Jim Rome shows. In 2006 he met President George W. Bush, Governor George Pataki, and Senator Hillary Clinton, to name just a few luminaries. The Athena team was also paid a visit at school by NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson. J-Mac’s magic moment won the ESPY for “Best Sports Moment” at the ESPN awards show later that year.

Mission: Camp Ta-Kum-Ta provides challenging, extraordinary experiences in a safe and loving environment for children who have or have had cancer and their families. Camp exists for Vermont and Northern New York children (including other out-of-state children who are treated in Vermont), at no cost to their families.
Camp Ta-Kum-Ta was founded through the dedicated efforts of a small group of people lead by Sheara Billado, a pediatric oncology nurse at UVM Medical. Wanting a parent’s perspective to be core to the planning, she invited Ted and Debby Kessler to be a part of the group and before he knew it, Ted became the Camp Director. Both Ted and Debby wanted to recreate the mind/body healing experience their son Todd had at a cancer camp in New York State. Together, for over 30 years, Sheara, Ted, and Debby fundraised, planned, and built an outstanding non-profit organization that now owns its own property and runs year-round programs for children with cancer and their families.
How the Camp Got Its Name:
While in the Pediatric Oncology Unit at the hospital discussing the possibility of a camp where “kids with cancer” can just be “kids”, one of the children still too young to attend exclaimed in frustration “but I want a camp to come ta!”. The name was perfect! Eventually, she did get her “Camp Ta-Kum-Ta”. Today, she is one of the many survivors volunteering during our programs.
More about Dan Osman:
Dan is one of the leading experts and premier trainers on kids, staff, fundraising, and the experience of summer camp. He has been involved with camps and youth development for twenty-five years as a volunteer, counselor, fundraising professional, and director. He is currently the Director of Development at Camp Ta-Kum-Ta an organization that creates year-round experiences for families impacted by childhood cancer. Dan is also an award-winning advocate for mental health on the state and national level, working with government officials to change the landscape of health care to best serve those in recovery from addiction and mental health conditions. Dan lives in Milton, Vermont with his wife Audrey and daughter Emma.

The Bairs Foundation:
The Bairs Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps people suffering as a result of a catastrophic accident. They provide financial assistance to families that need help paying for basic living expenses during the course of litigation.
The for-profit, non-recourse industry is unregulated. Many players in the litigation finance space have business models that make the cost of capital exorbitant for plaintiffs. But access to capital for families enduring a personal injury lawsuit (even at very costly rates) is so often preferred over letting go of the quest for justice. Funding families in need during the course of litigation is critical to the civil justice system. The Bairs Foundation provides low-cost access to capital so families have the resources to go the distance with their lawsuit. They offer low, simple interest in the name of the Seventh Amendment.

More About Brooke Kibrick:
Brooke is the executive director of Bairs Foundation. She started with the foundation in August 2020 and oversees all operations, fundraising initiatives, partnerships, and finances for the organization. Riveter helps recently unemployed Americans get back on their feet, fast.
At Riveter, they support you through the changes and offer opportunities among the turmoil. They are building a bridge between people, companies, and communities to help Americans adapt to changing times.
