What's really messing up your health?
We spend so much time looking at external influences on our health. The secret is, our body's it's own environment, and we have the power to change our internal state by learning how to communicate with our body. Your body's seeking one message to begin restoring health... I am safe. Let's talk about how to make sure your body hears that message in today's episode. The two ways to signal safety with your body: 1) reduce stress in your mind (this improves your ability to digest everything you take in) 2) reduce the physical stress (toxins) your body has to process (digest) each day Download your guide to easy ways to detox your day here. Episode 61: 7 biomarkers of fertility

How blood sugar dysregulation increases your risk of UTI
Did you know that diabetics are more prone to UTIs than other people? Did you know hormonal birth control interferes with your body's glucose metabolism and contributes to insulin resistance? Did you know that UTIs don't always show up on a standard urine culture?
If you suffer from UTIs, have been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis, or are on hormonal birth control, this episode's for you. I share my personal story of developing a UTI for the first time ever after discontinuing hormonal birth control, how that UTI continued to recur even after rounds of antibiotics, why my general practitioner suggested I might have interstitial cystitis, and how I learned that interstitial cystitis is sometimes just a misdiagnosed UTI.
Also, UTIs don't have to be a way of life, and if you have them recurringly, there may be an underlying health reason that just hasn't been diagnosed yet... like dysregulated sugar metabolism.

Episode 56: Does a newly discovered essential fatty acid hold the key for reversing NAFLD?
Dolphins as it turns out are also vulnerable to developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) despite not eating carbs or sugar. And, dolphins with a diet higher in C15:0 (a newly discovered essential fatty acid) had correspondingly healthier livers (i.e. an inverse relationship between dietary intake of C15:0 in relation to fatty areas within the liver was found), and this has led to some breakthrough research in the use of C15:0 in reversing/preventing the development of NAFLD in people.
In this episode, Drs. Stephanie & Eric Venn-Watson, the co-founders of fatty15 take us through the discovery of C15:0 (pentadecanoic acid) and its potential for improving/preventing a variety of health conditions (from fatty liver disease to diabetes and obesity).
Find the complete shownotes (with additional places to find out more about this fatty acid) here.

Are polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs) good for you?
Despite the hype, your body needs PUFAs. In fact, two polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential for health. One of these essential PUFAs is an omega-3 and the other is an omega-6 fatty acid.
So, if PUFAs are good for you and necessary for health, why are these fatty acids (and especially omega-6 and seed oils) getting such a bad rap these days?
Well, because there's an optimal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 that's most beneficial for health, and here in America, most of us are eating too much omega-6. You'll discover what that ratio is and how to boost omega-3's in your diet in today's episode.
As for the myth that your cellular membranes need to "detox" from PUFAs? Yeah, there's some basic science that proves that ludicrous idea wrong.

An Ayurvedic view of skincare
Like all things, Ayurveda takes a holistic view of your skin, skin conditions, and your skin's health. As one of the 4 main detox organs, your skin's appearance and overall health may reveal deeper lying imbalances within your body. In this episode, we talk about:
1) the stages of life from an Ayurvedic perspective and how these stages mean certain skin conditions are more common for certain age groups (example: acne, eczema, large pores, etc.)
2) an overview of the classes of Ayurvedic herbs used to support and balance the doshas (energies) within your body
3) a layered approach to viewing your body, with your blood being the foundational layer that supports all the other layers
4) what detox really means... we're mostly talking about the metabolic exhaust created during normal cellular processes and also real toxins like fragrances and fumes from your environment
5) how overburdening your body's natural detox processes can gum up the works and result in your skin bearing the brunt of these taxed systems
6) how to support your body's natural detox processes

What are alternative preservatives in skincare?
Last time, we talked about preservative regulations in skincare here in America compared with Europe. Referencing the EU's "List of Approved Preservatives in Skincare" alternative preservatives are ingredients that aren't found in that list. Why is that? These ingredients are multifunctional meaning that in addition to their antimicrobial nature, they also have additional benefits in your product. These additional benefits are typically:
moisturizing your skin "fixing" fragrance... the ingredients bind fragrance molecules helping fragrance linger for longer improved skin feel... this one's vague, and this might mean improving how plump your skin feels or how the product feels as you apply it (think silky smooth) anti-oxidant anti-inflammatoryAlternative preservatives are often (though not always) natural, and in this episode you'll hear more about the most common ones and what you might consider before using products containing those.

Episode 33: Debunking Diet Myths with Jenn Trepeck
Have you ever been on a diet?
Maybe a fairer question... how's your relationship with your weight?
Chances are, if you identify as woman, you have a complicated relationship with your weight regardless of the number on the scale and the reflection in the mirror.
And, metrics like BMI and numbers on a scale do nothing to help clear up any confusion. I've struggled with weight and body image (one of the main reasons I make skincare) and Jenn Trepeck is pretty much ninja level diet expert... one who's figured out that diets don't work.
In today's episode, Jenn shares the 5 fat factors or rather she breaks through some of the myths around dieting, numbers on a scale, and how to really achieve a "healthy" weight... and what exactly that means anyways.
Who's Jenn? Jenn Trepeck is described as a “force of nature" in the wellness space.
A Ross School of Business graduate from the University of Michigan, she's an Optimal Health Coach, podcaster and business consultant who founded Better Life Now LLC while working full time in hedge funds.

Episode 31: All Natural Non-Toxic Candles
In this episode, Jill Kosdrosky shares how she became interested in clean candles...with a few bites of shrimp in 2004 that led to repeated headaches and allergic reactions to everything from lipstick to perfume, even though she'd never had a problem before that day.
Seeking to avoid all allergens (okay, toxins), she discovered that many ingredients in our everyday products are unregulated and undisclosed, hiding under an unassuming word... fragrance.
Often listed as “fragrance” or “parfum” on ingredients labels, scent is rarely explained. Yet fragrance recipes can contain hundreds of chemicals (some safe, some unsafe, and some untested), all legally permitted to be hidden from ingredients lists. As part of FDA regulations, anything considered a company’s trade secret does not have to be disclosed, and “fragrance/parfum” is often a protected trade secret.
The bottom line is that we consumers aren’t told what ingredients are in our scented products, and if we ask, we’re not guaranteed an answer. Further, the fragrance in scented candles, including soy wax candles, is almost never disclosed. When's the last time you saw a full ingredients list on your candle?
As a former engineer and amid a thriving banking career, I decided in 2019 to switch gears completely and launch Aspen Clean Candle to give candle lovers a healthier choice.

Episode 10: What does Pilates have to do with lymph flow?
The exercises of Contrology, now known as Pilates, were born during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 to 1920. The Spanish Flu ravaged the world in waves propelled by the massive movement of soldiers during World War I, killed people between the ages of 20 and 40 at alarming rates, and ultimately caused more deaths than the war itself. Joseph Pilates refined his exercises while working with patients at hospitals on the Isle of Man, and according to Joe, not a single one of them (roughly 8000 in total) succumbed to the Spanish Flu.
In this episode, we're talking about why Pilates is such an incredible healing form of exercise, how it works to stimulate deeper lymph flow, and why the equipment (the Cadillac and Reformer) looks so strange.
