Steve Ducey of NØlympics LA - The Problems and Flaws of the Modern Olympics

I spoke to Steve Ducey of NØlympics LA on why his group is trying to stop the Olympics from coming to LA and the many problems of the modern Olympics.  It's a fascinating chat on gentrification, capital and nationalism and I think Steve makes a very convincing case against the Modern Olympics, and all this even without the myriad of problems that Covid-19 introduces into trying to host the global event.   For more conversations on the Olympics you can check out NØlympics LA here: https://nolympicsla.com/  And on Twitter at https://twitter.com/NOlympicsLA

Edward Ongweso Jr: Peter Thiel & The Post-Capitalism of Tech's Far Right

We conclude our conversation with Vice's Edward Ongweso Jr.  by looking at Peter Thiel's role in bankrolling Uber as the 'Tip of the Spear' for rolling back labor laws, workers' rights and Unions. All in the name of creating a 'Post-capitalist' future of monopoly, dominance and control.  We also discuss the shocking (and shockingly underreported) collaboration between Jackson, Mississippi's Mayor Chokwe Lumumba and Amazon's Ring program. Why is the leader of 'Cooperation Jackson', working with Jeff Bezos? Listen to find out.  Lastly, we offer a brief post-mortum on the failure of Proposition 22 and what new battles are emerging as the Gig economy expands and replaces traditional labor.  For more w. To discuss Central Asia, I spoke to Joanna Lillis, author of: Dark Shadows: Inside the Secret World of Kazakhstan. We have a far-reaching discussion on Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan and the real lives of people living in these diverse and dynamic nations. A journalist with over 20 years of experience living in Central Asia, Joanna has an unparalleled knowledge on the region and is able to host a fascinating discussion on the different politics of the various nations of Central Asia, as well as the differing desires of their citizens.  We discuss the USSR/Russia's imperialism over the region, the various spectrum of democracy that exists throughout Central Asia, how young people are remaking these countries (often to the chagrin of the gerontocratic authoritarians who too often are in control) and why Central Asia deserves far more attention and reporting than it currently receives.   For more with Joanna, please follow her on Twitter or purchase her book!  https://twitter.com/joannalillis https://bookshop.org/books/dark-shadows-inside-the-secret-world-of-kazakhstan/9781784538613 Image is shared under CC 2.0, Photographer is Steve Evans: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Young_Uzbekistani_boys_at_a_mosque_in_Uzbekistan.jpg Music is by ESKRY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqpJOU2ny6U

Dr. Khosravi is the author of several books (on Art, Iran, Sweden), but it is his work  '"Illegal'" Traveler: An Auto-Ethnography of Borders' that we discuss most extensively today.  Dr. Khosravi discusses the violence he faced as an 'illegal' migrant fleeing Iran for Sweden, how migrants today face even worse violence and exclusion from Global North countries, how welfare for Swedish citizens that excludes migrants reinforces segregation, and how we can build a world without borders and the Nation-State.  For more w. Even the most pessimistic of predictions, could not have foreseen the lack of global cooperation during the Covid-19 Pandemic. To try and help untangle this Gordian Knot I spoke to Hyo Yoon Kang, an Academic and Legal Theorist at the University of Kent.  From countries using 'Vaccine Nationalism' to engender loyalty from citizens, to Big Pharma jealously guarding IP even if it means more global deaths, to the Gates Foundation encouraging 'Vaccine Apartheid' in the name of defending Capitalism,  I discuss why the worst pandemic in recent memory has brought out the most selfish of behavior from corporations and government in a time when cooperation is needed more than ever.  For more with Hyo Yoon, I highly recommend her long-form article here on the legal implications of Covid-19: https://criticallegalthinking.com/2021/02/09/patent-capital-in-the-covid-19-pandemic-critical-intellectual-property-law/ Music by H3 Music: https://www.youtube.com/c/H3Music/videos

I was joined by academic and organizer Chu May Paing for a discussion on growing up in Myanmar & Myanmar's freedom struggle against a brutal military dictatorship. The main theme of our discussion is on Feminism as it relates to the protests vs. patriarchy as it relates to the Military & Buddhist Nationalists in Myanmar.  Some of our conversation points are:  - The history of Feminism in Myanmar and past freedom struggles. - Feminist tactics of resistance in the current protests.   - How Feminists in the country saw the rule of Aung San Suu Kyi  - How Patriarchy is a negative solidarity between the Military & Buddhist Nationalists  - And how Feminists globally can support Myanmar's freedom struggle without talking over local feminists.  To help Myanmar and its protesters, Chu recommended the following resources:  1. Sylvia Alajaji - Music & The Armenian Diaspora

I spoke to Ethnomusicologist Sylvia Alajaji for a long-form podcast on her incredible book: Music and the Armenian Diaspora.  Our discussion touches upon her fascinating research and our own complicated Armenian backgrounds.  Besides our own family histories, we discuss Sylvia's research into the various figures (ranging from the Armenian Priest Komitas to the Metal Band System of a Down) who have influenced Armenian Music, and more broadly how a diverse and eclectic sound of 'Armenian Music' has survived Genocide and emerged as a cohesive movement from the far-flung global Diaspora of Armenians For more w. Sylvia, please check out her book (which I would recommend to anyone who wants to better understand Armenians) Music and the Armenian Diaspora: https://iupress.org/9780253017611/music-and-the-armenian-diaspora/ Sylvia also recommended to following songs for those who want to do a 'deep dive' into Armenian Music: "'Ariur Ar 'Ariur" by Collectif Medz Bazar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRFQ_amDp_U&ab_channel=CollectifMedzBazar) "Yegur Yegur" performed by the Tatoul Altounian Ensemble (https://soundcloud.com/user-443604653/yegur-yegur) "Monk's Robes" by Angel Deradoorian (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYod_bu5hu4&ab_channel=ANTI-Records)--this is as "Armenian" as a System of a Down song (in other words, it's  definitely western) but she's an Armenian artist, so it may be nice to  include to bring attention to Armenian artists who aren't household  names "Hayvalla" performed by Onnik Dinkjian and Roupen Altiparmakian "Kef Life" by Ara Dinkjian (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4UMpWvyjhk&ab_channel=M.Hassan) "Greeted by Tir (Տիր)" by Lara Sarkissian (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzBdOcA07Yc&ab_channel=LaraSarkissian-Topic)--this is a bit more cerebral and not as accessible but I would love for her to be better known. Navyug Gill: On India's Farmer Protests & Sikhism as Resistance

Navyug Gill: On India's Farmer Protests & Sikhism as Resistance

I was thrilled to speak to Dr. Navyug Gill of William Paterson University on the recent Farmer's protests in India.  Over 300,000 participants have locked Narendra Modi and his BJP Government in a stalemate. The Future? Perhaps that of Global Capitalism and its ability to dominate the lives of ordinary people. Should the Farmer's movement fail, nothing will be in the way of Modi from violently re-shaping India in his image of neoliberal Hindutva. The last hope of a democracy by and for the people of India rests on the shoulders of the Punjabi Farmers, refusing neoliberalism and demanding more than mere survival.  I discuss all this with Dr. Gill, who truly was one of my favorite guests this year. We discuss the protests, Sikhism, Modi, Global Capitalism and how we can intertwine faith, anti-capitalism and dissent of the status-quo to build new visions for the future.  For more w Dr. GIll you can follow him on Twitter: @navyuggill Or read his work, I highly recommend his most recent article for Al Jazera on the protests: https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2020/12/11/a-popular-upsurge-against-neoliberal-arithmetic-in-india Music by Prod. Mikkel Frantzen - Capitalism, Depression & Revolution as Therapy

I spoke to writer Mikkel Frantzen for an intimate conversation on depression under Capitalism, art and revolution as a form of therapy.  Mikkel and I discuss our personal battles with depression, how these battles differ for Mikkel as a Danish citizen w. Universal Health Care compared to the privatized hell-th care of Americans, we then explore how capitalism transcends borders to make all of us depressed.  In addition to these fascinating topics, we also discuss the limits of David Foster Wallace's insights on depression, how artists have false notions of Depression's beauty and what a more beautiful world might look like.  For more w. Mikkel you can find his essays on Depression and Mental Health at the LA Review of Books: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/future-no-future-depression-left-politics-mental-health/ Mikkel also recently published a full-length book on Depression, Popular Culture and Media w. I was thrilled to speak to Matthew Christopher on his multi-year project: Abandoned America, documenting the abandoned spaces, places and buildings of the U.S.A.  We discuss a variety of fascinating topics: How the paradox of America's toxic capitalism and settler colonialism can be seen in abandoned properties. Why abandoned properties are still guarded by Police,  how Social Media has accelerated the shallow photography of 'Ruin Porn', and why Donald Trump should be known as the 'Abandoner in Chief' for his callous fascism towards America's poor and non-white citizens.  For more on Matthew and Abandoned America, please check out  Twitter: @abandonedameric Website: https://www.abandonedamerica.us/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abandoned_america/ Books: https://bookshop.org/books/abandoned-america-dismantling-the-dream/9782361950941 Music for this episode is: JULIAN AVILA - GOLDEN SKIES. Soumya Shankar - 'Will Joe Biden Oppose Hindutva?' On the Complex Politics of Indian American Voters

Before the 2020 US election results were finalized, journalist Soumya Shankar joined me to discuss the complex politics of Indian American voters.  Soumya offers critical insights on how a Biden Presidency would both break from and continue on the toxic relationship between the USA and India held in thrall by the hatred of Modi's BJP.   Topics include:  If COVID-19 has impacted Modi's popularity both at home or abroad,   Why more Indian-Americans are choosing to support the Racism (and tax cuts) of Donald Trump's GOP,  And if a Biden administration would dare stand up to Modi's BJP on issues of Kashmir or Islamophobia For more with Soumya,  her most recent piece on the shifting politics of Indian American Voters, is a great place to start:  https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/people/article/3107915/us-election-why-are-more-indian-americans-turning-donald-trump I also highly recommend this piece in Foreign Policy on why diaspora who vote for liberal politics in the US, support Modi's hard-right politics in India:  https://foreignpolicy.com/2019/05/07/indias-liberal-expats-are-modis-biggest-fans/ Music is 'Face' by Noromeo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J93FvXhZr0Q

Krithika explains the origins of Wahhabi, how Saudi Arabia uses wealth, statecraft and alliances (for example, with the US) to spread this type of Islam. This was a one of a kind conversation with a one of a kind mind. I spoke to Writer and Large Hadron Collider Scientist  Yangyang Cheng.  Yangyang and I debate why so many brilliant people work in scientific systems that produce suffering.  And why this global pandemic has not inspired scientists, states and capitalism to cooperate, but instead acted as a catalyst for exploitation and violence.  It's a fascinating conversation on  Research, STEM, and what these fields might look like in a world without borders or capitalism.  For more on Yangyang, simply search her name, she is in my opinion one of the most important writers and public figures working today.  I highly recommend her most recent piece for the Guardian for those who enjoy our conversation: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jul/13/allowing-privileged-flee-hong-kong-isnt-liberation-beijing And her most recent article for Sup China on Borders and Science: https://supchina.com/2020/06/25/this-land-is-not-your-land/ Music is 'Inspired' by Julian Avila: https://soundcloud.com/julian_avila

This is a truly fascinating conversation w. We discuss the differences between the Progressive politics of K-Pop's Fans, the largely apolitical nature of the musical groups themselves, and how this makes discussing K-Pop and Progressive causes, a very complicated matter.  For more with Hyunsu, you can check out his most recent article with the Washington Post on K-Pop and Black Lives Matter here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/06/11/surprised-seeing-k-pop-fans-stand-up-black-lives-matter-you-shouldnt-be/#click=https://t.co/E4HGNeezS6 And his recent article with the Korea Herald on the diversity of K-Pop Fandom Here: http://m.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200612000721  Beats by Kohzo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZyEVZcJgWU

I spoke w. organizer Harsh Mander on his efforts to help India's poor and Muslim communities, who have endured unspeakable violence from Narendra Modi's government. We discuss Covid-19 impact on India's migrant workforce, the violence India's Muslims have faced, and how despite this hatred and the state targeting him with prosecution for his organizing, Harsh maintains a philosophy of 'radical love' .  Other topics include:  Anarchism vs. Social Democracy, leaders, and how the Black Lives Matter protests are being viewed within India.  For more with Harsh, simply search the internet, he's all over! Writer Cassie Da Costa - Race, Gender & Celebrity in an Unequal World

Recorded before the brutal police murder of George Floyd, this is a conversation I had with Writer Cassie Da Costa about what celebrity means in a United States where Race, Gender and Capitalism are deeply intertwined.  We discuss figures like Gal Gadot, Jay-Z, The Kardashians, Lebron James, Beyonce, Cardi B, Ru Paul,  Jameela Jamil, and others.  Should we admire celebrities for succeeding despite racial oppression, or do they distract us from dismantling the oppressive systems  of whiteness, sexism and capitalism?  What does Beauty mean in a world where bodies have always been commodified as products?  Can celebrities be 'role models' in a deeply unequal world, where ones role is to be the exploiter (capitalist) or exploitee (laborer)?   We discuss all this and more in a radically honest conversation. For more Cassie's work can be seen in the Daily Beast,  The New Yorker, The New Yorker (Videos), the film journal Another Gaze, and elsewhere. Her Website Can be found here: http://cassiedacosta.com/ Editor's note: I misname a murder victim of police violence as Michael Walker. Vicky Osterweil on US Left Media: How Riots expose the Distance between The People and the Pundits

Vicky Osterweil on US Left Media: How Riots expose the Distance between The People and the Pundits

Prior to the brutal Police murder of George Floyd,  I spoke w. writer Vicky Osterweil ( Read her essay: In Defense of Looting ) to discuss why the US Left Media (at least those with money or fame) are so bad at centering the voices of those in struggle both overseas (in places like Hong Kong, India, West Papua or Xinjiang) and domestically (the complete erasure of the Black Lives Matter Movement).  Vicky discusses some of the structural failures in a US Left Media populated with figures from the Ivy Leagues or The Rich. Why they gravitate towards a leftism based on 'leaders', voting, and trying to make sure they remain the loudest voices in the room, rather than letting the people in struggle speak.  And how they can do better, how we all need to do better. How 'normal' was the problem to begin with.  At least for me, this was the conversation that let me 'wake up' and leave US Left Media behind. As Vicky discusses,  when real revolutions appear, these same voices who could write hundreds of columns on Sanders, Unions or AOC, have nothing to say and offer the people out in the streets of Hong Kong, Lebanon, Bangkok, Chile, Algeria, West Papua, Syria and now the Twin Cities, Louisville, Chicago, and across the USA, fighting for a better,  more just future.  We already released half of the conversation, here  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crisis-collapse-chat-w-vicky-osterweil-on-death-neoliberal/id1406775458?i=1000468974708 For more from Vicky you can find her on Twitter: @Vicky_ACAB Her writing in Real Life: https://reallifemag.com/contributors/vicky-osterweil And the essay that spawned our interview can be found here, it's one of my favorite 'takes' on the brutal violence of neoliberalism: https://thenewinquiry.com/liberalism-is-dead/ Vicky's Book 'In Defense of Looting' based on her New Inquiry essay will be out soon in 2020.  Solidarity to George Floyd, Black Lives Matter, ACAB.   1st Beats by Nxnja: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guS-evJwgg8 2nd Beats by Syndrome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rpnv_pi97yY

Writer Yi-Ling Liu on Blued: How the World's Largest LGBTQ App was built in China & the Limits of Tolerance in the PRC

I was fortunate to speak with writer Yi-Ling Liu on her outstanding piece in New York Times Magazine on Blued: How a Dating App Helped a Generation of Chinese Come Out of the Closet Our conversation touches on several issues - The truly remarkable story of Blued's Founder Geng Le - The wax and wane with which LBGTQ rights and acceptance have occurred in China under the PRC - The 'pink yuan' and Neoliberal Queerness in China - And what does a LGBTQ role in society look like if activism or organizing is forbidden. For those looking to understand a bit more about LGBTQ culture in China, Yi-Ling was kind enough to recommend the following:  Lan Yu: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lan_Yu_(film) Addicted: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addicted_(web_series) And (Her words now) I'd add the Shanghai Pride Parade as well, which I think is a pretty important event for LGBT communities and NGOs in China, the recent phenomena of LGBT cruises, organized by PFLAG, China, and a TMall advertisement this year, depicting a same-sex couple returning home durin the Chinese New Year, which stirred up a lot of hubbub on Weibo. Writer & Researcher Mita: On Anarchism, Mutual Aid & What the Western Left could Learn from Indonesia (Conclusion)

Writer & Researcher Mita: On Anarchism, Mutual Aid & What the Western Left could Learn from Indonesia (Conclusion)

We were thrilled to speak with Writer and Researcher Aria Danaparamita or Mita (Twitter: @mitatweets) , for a two part conversation on Indonesia, Covid-19 and Political Economy. In part 2 of our conversation, we discuss the ways Anarchists, Socialists and ordinary people are coming together to help one another, after being abandoned by capitalists and the state. Mutual Aid, Direct Action and other progressive tactics are being used in powerful ways in Indonesia, its my hope we can learn from their struggles, and build links of solidarity. In this spirit of solidarity, here are a list of organizations who are doing great work in Mutual Aid in Indonesia (these were all graciously provided by Mita): Just to share some of the mutual aid initiatives, there are these threads that summarize some of the local initiatives (there are so many!): https://twitter.com/DamarJuniarto/status/1245137166549700608 https://twitter.com/maderodog/status/1241271552097710080 I'd also like to highlight these 2 in particular: For incarcerated women in Jakarta: https://twitter.com/LBHAPIK/status/1247076888918425604 For transwomen in Jakarta: https://twitter.com/aruspelangi/status/1243874699949441025 As I mentioned, most of these are donation drives, rather than a more structured/sustained project. Some of the more organised ones that are focused on food/goods production and distribution are: Konsorsium Pembaruan Agraria (Consortium for Agrarian Reform): connecting farmer unions in Pasundan, Ciamis and Pangandaran to communities in their network, anyone can also buy the rice and staples through KPA https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=share&v=ROv-XRiJOeQ / http://kpa.or.id/menu/lumbung/?lang=en Jaringan Rakyat Miskin Kota (Urban Poor Consortium): connecting farmers in Kendeng with urban poor communities in their network (non-farmers can support by donating to subsidize the goods) https://twitter.com/gugunmuhammad1/status/1249583895076429824 / http://www.urbanpoor.or.id/ Perbawani: coordinating Rumah Solidaritas Kemanusiaan Warga Jakarta (RSKWJ) and Federasi Buruh Lintas Pabrik (FBLP) to make masks and distribute them communities in Jakarta and Cirebon. FBLP is a union mostly of garment workers in north Jakarta, many of whom have been laid off since the outbreak and have turned to making these masks. People can support by donating for raw materials. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-lZrLrAigL/ These last ones are more organized and politically explicit (ie. engaged in restructuring production and distribution) and they have also been at it with similar mutual aid projects prior to covid and will (hopefully!) continue. We were thrilled to speak with Writer and Researcher Aria Danaparamita or Mita (Twitter: @mitatweets) , for a two part conversation on Indonesia, Covid-19 and Political Economy. In part one of our conversation we look at Indonesia through the increasingly irrelevant lens of liberalism. Covering Indonesian Leader Jokowi, The current politics of Indonesia, how Covid-19 has caused crisis or has simply revealed the hidden violence of Capital and the State. The state is failing, Capitalists are using this crisis to line their own pockets. Only we can save each other. We were overjoyed to speak w. Dr. Wen Liu, one of the founding members of the progressive organization- New Bloom (Taiwan) and a member of the Decolonial Left Organization - Lausan (Hong Kong). Our conversation explores how Taiwan has functioned as a Queer Casablanca, offering a space for solidarity and exploration for pan-Asian queerness within a still Hetronormative and Heteronationalist Asia. We also discuss Taiwan's current government in relation to Queerness, the country's path to Same-Sex Marriage and the obstacles remaining to intersectional queerness in the country. Plus we talk briefly w. Writer Chason Dailey on the complicated situation for expats and whiteness in the time of Covid-19. Like many he is stuck between the country he's from and fears return to (The United States) and the country where he is not a citizen but wishes to remain (Taiwan). Taiwan has (since our conversation) extended all visas for foreigners for 30 days in an act of grace and mercy. What happens after those 30 days expire, controls the fate of many, including Chason. Crisis and Collapse: Vicky Osterweil on the Death of Neoliberal Multiculturalism & the Rise of Neoliberal Fascism

At the outset of the US's Coronavirus outbreak, I had a fascinating conversation w. writer Vicky Osterweil on the era we live in. We'll release part 1 soon but, due to our present crisis, I'm skipping to Part 2 We look with unflinching personal honesty at our era of cascading environmental, economic, and political crisis. How this has led us to two equally horrific choices, the Ethnonationalist fascism (ala a Trump or Modi) or Neoliberal fascism (in the form of Big Tech and Silicon Valley.) We must recognize both, reject both, and build something else. Something inclusive, moral and for the benefit of all. March 15th was the 9th anniversary of the Syrian Revolution. It's made all the more painful by the indifference from Western governments towards refugees. Hunted first by the Assad Regime they now face the invisible tormentor of the Covid-19 virus as they try to finally find stability, peace and hope. To discuss the revolution, why the international community failed Syria, and what can be done, I spoke with Leila Al Shami, co-author with Robin Yassin-Kassab of Burning Country: Syrians in Revolution and War. Its one of my favorite recent political books and I think a must-read for anyone who wants to understand Syria. Candy Colored Clowns (Finale) w. Jake Flores on Mental Health in Stand-Up and the Emotional Labor of Comedians

This is the finale of our chat w. Comedian/Activist/Twitter Final Boss Jake Flores (@feraljokes). We discuss the misanthropic phenomenon of 'Edgelord' comedy, why Nanette isn't talked about more on the Left, and the emotional toil/labor of being a Stand-up Comedian under Neoliberalism. It's a fascinating conversation w. a rising star in comedy and I know you'll laugh (and maybe cry) a little bit! Part one of our conversation can be found here. It's a great chat about the "Brooklyn" Left, the limits of "Podcast Leftism" and the good and bad of contemporary Left Media. • https://player.whooshkaa.com/episode?id=562590 (and iTunes/Spotify/Android) For more on Jake check out his twitter, go see his live shows, and listen to his own podcasts: • The more serious and academic 'Why you Mad?': https://soundcloud.com/whyyoumadpod • And the horror/leftist/cluster-fu*k that is Pod Damn America : https://soundcloud.com/poddamnamerica • And Jake's own website (with tours and other info) can be found here: http://www.feraljokes.com Beats by Lakey Inspired, Golden Hour: https://soundcloud.com/lakeyinspired

Nicole Curato on Rodrigo Duterte and Western Stereotypes of the Philippines

I spoke w. Nicole Curato (Twitter:@NicoleCurato) an author, academic and the editor of "A Duterte Reader", one of my favorite recent books on Asia : A Duterte Reader Nicole joined me for a complex discussion on Phillipines' leader Rodrigo Duterte, why he was elected, and how Western observers far too often use lazy tropes and stereotypes about the Philippines to try and understand Duterte, rather than looking at the myriad of complex factors that explain his rise and the rise of authoritarian leaders globally in our era of cruel Neoliberalism. It's a fascinating chat for both scholars of the Philippines and for a casual listener who'd like to learn more. I hope you enjoy! Not so Golden - Cora Currier of The Intercept, on Homelessness & California

Perhaps the saddest paradox of California, America's most 'progressive state' is the increasing indifference, if not outright hostility to the homeless and unhoused. To discuss this paradox I was joined by the brilliant Cora Currier of the Intercept. Our conversation is centered on her outstanding article for Dissent Magazine about California politics and organizing unhoused communities. As well as numerous other topics. 'Trump - Modi! Brother - Brother!' Eviane Leidig on Narendra Modi and the BJP's Evolving Relationship with the Global Right

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi is incredibly popular within India's diaspora. But how can one support tolerance and immigration within the context of the US or UK, and at the same time support the bigotry and Islamophobia of Modi's BJP Party in India? To explore this paradox I spoke w. Eviane Leidig, a researcher at The Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX). We discuss the rise of the BJP, its growing ties with other global far-right leaders like Trump and Boris Johnson, and how industries like Silicon Valley are crucial to spreading its toxic message of neoliberalism and islamophobia. For more on these subjects, I highly recommend checking out Eviane's website: https://www.evianeleidig.com/ Lastly, for four more sources, I highly recommend • Neha Dixit for understanding the scope of violence currently being unleashed by the BJP in India • Dr. Aihwa Ong for her examinations of how neoliberalism affects immigration policies. • Soumya Shankar. Candy Colored Clowns - Comedian Jake Flores on ICE, The Brooklyn Left and Podcast Leftism (Part 1)

This is part 1 of a two part conversation. I spoke w. Comedian Jake Flores on his terrifying experience with ICE, his interactions with what's colloquially known as the Brooklyn Left, and how podcasting has become so critical to amplifying the left, and the positives and negatives of this Medium. Jake's an incredibly sensitive and kind comedian with great insights on how we can build a more progressive space for Comedy, Media and politics. I try to raise some good-faith criticisms of my own interactions with the "Brooklyn Left". I think our conversation ends at a good place before we move onto part two (next week) which talks more specifically about Comedy. Professor Joshua Hendrick on Fethullah Gülen, Turkey, and 'Neoliberal Islam'

I was thrilled to speak with Dr. Joshua Hendrick, Author of Gülen: The Ambiguous Politics of Market Islam in Turkey and the World Fethullah Gülen is perhaps the world's most open but least understood religious leaders. In this conversation, Dr. Hendrick unpacks how The Gülen movment built itself into a religious and business empire, how it was originally an ally of the Erdogan and the AKP, and how it became such a threat to the Turkish State that an open war was declared between the former alllies, culminating in the 2016 coup attempt against Erdogan. We also discuss the fascinating term "Market Islam" or (as I call it Neoliberal Islam), how Neoliberalism was crucial to the infrastructure of the Gülen Movement. This is perhaps our most interesting chat of the year, we can't wait for you to listen and learn more about this fascinating man, movement and his falling out with the Turkish State! Prod. Journalists Karen Ho and Tony Lin on White Privilege in Media & Reforming (or Revolting Against) Elite Institutions

I was thrilled to speak with accomplished journalists Karen Ho (Twitter: @karenkho) & Tony Lin (@tony_zy) for a conversation on Race, Class and Privilege. We discuss how Wuhan's Corona Virus is being used to promote anti-Chinese racism, how Post-Coloniality and White Privilege affects Journalism, and how far-right tendencies manifest themselves in China's digital spaces. We also touch upon Wall Street, The Ivy Leagues, Ellen K Pao and a host of other subjects. It's a passionate and at times contentious conversation, but, it's all in good faith. Is Celebrity an Inequality? Naomi Burton of Means TV on Building Progressive Media & The U.S Left's Relationship with Fame

I was thrilled to be joined by Naomi Burton, Co-Founder of Means TV (@means_tv), the first Anti-Capitalist Media Platform in the United States. Naomi and Co-Founder Nick Hayes, rose to prominence through producing videos for Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and several other campaigns. After these big breaks they could have done anything, but (to my great admiration) they chose perhaps the most risky and unprecedented path: trying to build a worker-owned media platform that gives voice to those traditionally excluded from the entertainment industry, and to produce content that explains the structural forces (Racism, Capitalism, Patriarchy, Sexism) that generates these exclusions. It's a strange conversation in that I'm not sure Fame or Celebrity (which themselves are based on inequality) can ever be progressive or leftist. I discuss this with Naomi, my own difficulty in building solidarity with fellow leftists in Media, and thoughts on how we can do things better. It's a fascinating conversation with a brilliant woman, and I can't wait to hear what you think! For more on Means TV check them out on Twitter or their webpage. Kirsten Han of New Naratif Magazine: On Singapore, Censorship and Decolonization

In light of Taiwan's recent election, and Hong Kong's struggles for Democracy, a third nation has remained quiet: Singapore. This small territory has seen none of the protests of Hong Kong and has none of Taiwan's Democracy. Is this stability, or the calm before the storm? To unpack Singapore, I was thrilled to have Kirsten Han (Twitter:@kixes), The Editor in Chief of New Naratif (@NewNaratif) as our guest. Kirsten and I discuss "Manufacturing Consent" in the context of Singapore, what the current state of democracy is within the country, and how colonial legacies of racism, capitalism, and control, still shape this modern-day financial center. It's a fascinating chat, and I hope it inspires more conversation on what Democracy is, where Democracy can go, and how we still need to work towards decolonization and intersectionality, no matter the person or place. Journalist Surabhi Tandon on the "F*cking Insanity" of Kashmir's Historic and Contemporary Suffering

Journalist Surabhi Tandon on the "F*cking Insanity" of Kashmir's Historic and Contemporary Suffering

I was trying to think of an eloquent title to describe my conversation with this week's guest, the brilliant and brave journalist Surabhi Tandon, but I've decided to use the words of Arundhati Roy, one of India's greatest living activists. When asked about the current CAA/NRC laws within India, she simply called them, "Fu*king Insane" Kashmir, where Surabhi has done some of the best reporting (in video or print) I've seen, is also "Fu*king nsane". A conflict left festering for decades, suddenly people can't leave their neighborhoods, networks of barbed wire, pellet guns and torture chambers have appeared, and a digital siege has left Kashmir cut off from the world. Coupled with disgusting comments from BJP politicians about buying land and 'fair-skinned Kashmiri women', marrying the language of misogyny with Settler Colonialism. I discuss the insanity of Kashmir w. Surabhi, how insanity has become normalized in Kashmir, and the contemporary history of Kashmir's suffering. I may have learned the most from this conversation from any I've recorded. I hope you find it to be a powerful and informative conversation. To better understand mainstream politics and viewpoints on the protests within India, we're joined by Writer/Journalist Debasish Roy Chowdhury (Twitter: @Planet_Deb), formerly of the Southern China Morning Post and currently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sydney. I found Debasish's writing on Modi, India and the current state of the protests to be some of the best, even-handed, and accessible journalism on these complex and sensitive subjects. Author Kyle Chayka on AirBnB, "Airspace" & how Minimalism became the Design Aesthetic of Global Capitalism

This was a conversation that went to some really unexpected places. I spoke w. Kyle Chayka, the Author of: The Longing for Less - Living with Minimalism. We discuss Kyle's ground-breaking research into AirBnb and the creation of what he calls "Airspace", a minimalist design aesthetic driven by algorithms, the ubiquity of global monopoly capitalism and the sheer size of platforms like AirBnB. If you've ever wondered, as Kyle puts it, why the design aesthetics of a neighborhood in Brooklyn and Beijing may be more similar than one in Brooklyn and Queens, you'll want to listen to this conversation! Never did I consider how design aesthetics and neoliberalism could be so interlinked. Also we talk about how Little Nas X's Old Town Road may have been the most revolutionary work of art of the 2010s!
