Meet Maddy from Little Dreamers
Maddy Buchner grew up caring for her younger brother, who had a range of chronic illnesses, and her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. At nine years of age, she identified a gap in the support system for Young Carers and began to raise awareness through fundraising events and stalls. This eventually culminated in a business plan for an organisation called Little Dreamers, way back in 2009.
More than ten years later and over 5,000 young people reached, Little Dreamers is now Australia's leading Young Carer organisation. Across a range of key support programs co-designed with young people in caring roles, they are breaking down barriers and empowering youths, with a vision to ensure that every Young Carer around the world is supported by someone or something by the year 2030.
Maddy is one of the boldest young women I have had the pleasure of chatting with for the podcast. Whether you are a young carer or not, there is much to be learned from Maddy's story and her attitude to the work she does.

Meet Laura from Makeup For Change
Working in beauty salons during her early twenties introduced Laura to a number of women who felt comfortable confiding their personal stories and current situations with her during their appointments. In a safe space, often relaxed, and with a degree of anonymity, women often disclosed details with Laura about financial difficulties, domestic violence, illness, and abuse against their children by a loved one.
Having experienced domestic abuse in her own life, Laura resonated with these women who just needed some kind of outlet for what they were going through, but the hardest aspect was that not only was she not qualified to counsel them, but that at the end of the day they would often leave the salon and Laura would never see them again. She had no way of knowing if they escaped violence, protected their children, their illness treated or terminal, or destined for bankruptcy.
Laura wanting to find a way to establish her own business where women could still feel safe enough to confide in her, but have access to a range of resources to help them through whatever they were facing.
In partnership with Women's Safety NSW, Makeup for Change is a project initiated Laura to help raise awareness of domestic abuse in its many forms, support those who have experienced abuse during their lifetime, and guide women to resources and organisations that can assist them.
The Makeup for Change project will be providing a complimentary hair and makeup session to women who have previously experienced domestic abuse to:
•Improve their sense of self worth
•Spoil and provide a memorable, enjoyable experience
•Allow a safe space in which to tell their story
•Contribute to raising awareness for domestic abuse

Meet Danielle from Motherless Daughters
At the age of 23, Danielle lost her mother to a rare form of gynaecological cancer. Staring down the barrel of life's milestones without the support of her Mum, Danielle began searching for support groups where she could connect with other Australian women in their 20's who had also lost their Mum. Through the power of social media, Danielle connected with a local girl called Eloise who had also lost her mother. They planned to have a quick coffee catch up to meet face to face and six hours later in that Melbourne café, Motherless Daughters Australia was born.
Motherless Daughters Australia now provides support to over 4,000 women and children who have lost their Mums through various events, an online support group and beautiful children's journals. Their goal is to connect and unite women in the same shoes to show them that they are not alone, facilitate and conduct research, and to raise awareness and provide education to the wider community.

Zara contributes $2 from every purchase to charities that also align with her values of education and empowering others in need.
During my chat with Zara we discuss purpose, procrastination and puppies! You can learn more about Zara and Kind Cards at www.kindcards.online or on Facebook and Instagram.

Meet Beck from Military Wife Life
When Beck met and married a man in the military almost 20 years ago nothing could prepare her for the life that lay ahead. The moving and the packing/unpacking, making friends and leaving them and the general loneliness that comes when you are far from your family and your military person is away for months on end. Beck started to post real and honest accounts about her life as a military wife and it really resonated with others in her situation.
Fast forward to the current day where Beck runs an online community, 'Military Wife Life' of almost 3,000 and a podcast where she shares the stories of those left behind on the home front, the military spouses.

Meet Krystal from Pink Hope
After every woman in her family had faced cancer, Krystal Barter underwent genetic testing at the age of 22, returning a positive result for the BRCA gene, bringing with it an 80% risk of breast cancer and a 60% risk of ovarian cancer.
Following Krystal's discovery of her increased risk, the next few years were filled with anxiety as she navigated the choices and options available to her. It was during this time Krystal realised there was no unique organisation focused on the needs of families facing an increased risk of cancer.
At only 25, with a husband and young family, Krystal made the difficult decision to break the cycle of cancer that plagued her family. Krystal had a preventative double mastectomy in 2009, making her one of the first Australian women to publicly share her story and preventative surgery, giving a face and awareness to BRCA and prevention.
As she lay in her hospital bed recovering from her double mastectomy, Krystal picked up her laptop and created an organisation for women just like her. That is when Pink Hope was born.
Ten years on, Pink Hope is now one of the fastest growing organisations in the country focusing on breast and ovarian preventative health and personalised support for at-risk women. Krystal and the Pink Hope team have truly made a national and now global difference to those they support.

Meet Kellie from 100 Alice Stories Project
Kellie is on a mission to share 100 stories of domestic violence survival and escape, with the aim of providing hope and support to those who are currently living in a DV situation. Through both her own lived experience plus the amazing work she does in the community around this shocking issue, Kellie's passion for this project is so obvious. The 100 Alice Stories Project has already been the catalyst for multiple women to leave their abusive partners and has no doubt become a life changing resource for others.
This episode is personally very important to me, as in September 2015 I contributed my own story to this project. The process of writing my story was both painful but healing at the same time. I am so grateful to Kellie for allowing me to contribute to this project and for taking the time to sit down with me and chat on the podcast.

Meet Shanna from Sober In The Country
Five years ago, Shanna Whan was on the brink. She was drinking excessively and had become an extremely destructive person who was living very close to the edge. The epitome of a high functioning alcoholic. When her husband found her at the bottom of a stair case in a pool of blood, they both knew something had to give. Shanna then embarked on the most important journey of her life - her journey to sobriety.
A country girl through and through, Shanna realised that the city model for alcohol recovery did not fit the country landscape. Shanna began to write online about her experience and the work she was doing for her own sobriety. This began an amazing online conversation which grew into what Sober In The Country is today. In June 2019 Katie started a project called Get Papped, a birthday card for 25 years old women. #GetPapped aims to encourage women to take control of our health and promote a discussion around female health amongst loved ones.

Through this business, Melanie now works with people to build their self-awareness and resilience through coaching, workshop and keynote speaking.

Meet Louise from Moody Activewear
Sometimes brilliant ideas are born in boardrooms. Sometimes around the dinner table. And sometimes at the pub.
Surrounded by great company (and great wine) Louise made a comment to her husband and friends about not being able to find good quality leggings that had some sort of give back component. They asked Louise what she was going to do about that gap in the market, little did anyone in that pub know that this question would turn out to be the start of something pretty special!
Two years and 50 legging samples later, Louise launched Moody Activewear on International Women's Day in 2018 - a day very fitting for a social enterprise that donates 100% of its profits to women's mental health support services across Australia and Ireland (Louise's home country).
Motivated by her late Mum and the struggles she faced with physical and mental wellness, Louise has built a beautiful online business with huge vision for the future of her social enterprise.

Meet Helen from The Babes Project
The Babes Project began with one story. Now many stories begin with The Babes Project.
Through Helen's own personal experience of crisis pregnancy and after finding that there was little support available to her, the seed of what would become The Babes Project was planted. Helen found herself in need of someone to tell me that her that she could a parent, and then show her how.
As Helen and the team of employees & volunteer gear up to celebrate their 10th anniversary, The Babes Project really is changing the way Australians approach crisis pregnancy by supporting women in the perinatal period.

Meet Amy + Laura from Secret Book Stuff
What started as a random act of kindness in 2017 has now grown in to a beautiful social impact business, sharing the love of reading and books throughout the country. When you order a secret book or send one to a friend anywhere in Australia, they donate a secret book as a random act of kindness. They leave them in cafes for people to find and take home, donate them to hospitals and schools, and gift them to non-profit organisations doing incredible things for this world. PLUS, $5 from their Secret Book Box is donated to Share The Dignity. And if that's not enough, the profit they make in their new book stores goes directly toward volunteering trips with their official charity partner for 2019, Books 4 Outback!
Amy + Laura are not only partners in business but in life and they are such a warm and kind pair of women.

Inspired by a school performance she was performing in, Alex knew this dance company would be different. It would be for the youth, by the youth. Every person who is involved in Spark Productions is a young person; every choreographer, set designer, lighting person and musician. Alex has created a safe space for young people to be themselves and express themselves. It is so clear that Alex is passionate about the growth of these young artists, of her non profit company and most importantly, herself.
