Episode 42-Jess Waters: "The Divinity Streak"
The Dope Science Show Podcast is a science lifestyle podcast that discusses science, indie film, music, politics and everything in between. Making science an everyday conversation. We are all dope scientists!
In this episode we hang out with me, your host, Stephany Lowe and Jess Waters. Jess is a Black non-binary TV writer who writes stories about re-conceptualizing queerness and Blackness. We discuss Jess’s most recent work; a short film called “The Divinity Streak” which is a part of the Netflix x Ghetto Film School Content Creation Program.
“The Divinity Streak” is a drama about 3 black activists who hijack a space shuttle to Mars. It is a story about identity, resilience and freedom. You can watch it on the Netflix Film Club YouTube channel.
We talk about how Jess’ Black queer identity is represented in their work and the importance of re-imagining history to tell Black stories from a Black non-binary queer perspective. Jess shares their list of artists who influence their work. We talk about music and their writing process and we reminisce about our very first time on set together. I was a production assistant on the film and I had an amazing time on set:)
Thank you all for listening, follow Jess on their Instagram @jm_waters.

Episode 41- Raven Baxter: "Twerking for Science"
Science lifestyle podcast that discusses crowdfunding , indie film, music, politics, randomness , education and everything science. We are all dope scientists!
In this episode, our host Stephany Lowe and Raven Baxter aka Raven the Science Maven discuss the strength and freedom found in staying true to your authentic self.
@RaventheScienceMaven is a Science Education PhD candidate (she majored in Molecular Biology undergrad), who got tired of #codeswitching in the lab and one day decided to write a song about it. #BigOleGeeks was born. A "scientific parody" of the hit song Big Ole Freaks by Megan Thee Stallion, Raven's goal is to reach more young people through STEM. In fact, she is currently creating an ENTIRE COLLEGE LEVEL STEM CURRICULUM for high school students to do just that. She also wants to prove that being Back and nerdy does not mean you can't be Black and sexy. And yes...scientists do twerk.

Episode 37- Rebecca Coffey- Science and Lust
SCIENCE AND LUST
Headlines suggest humans have become a mindlessly lust-driven race. Hmmmm. Have we always been that way? And, if so, can intelligence and culture ever save us?
To answer such questions, SCIENCE AND LUST, a new, “entertaining and envelope-pushing popular science”* book, takes the lens of evolutionary psychology to the #MeToo movement and a host of other current mating-and-madness issues. In twelve fun and fact-packed essays by science journalist and humorist Rebecca Coffey (Scientific American, Discover, and Psychology Today magazines as well as Vermont Public Radio). The most current essay, “The Human Ape” examines why even “good guys” sometimes act like apes.

Episode 36- Prof. Ramesh- 1000 Stem Women Project
Ramesh Laungani! He is an Associate Professor of Biology at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. His scientific research focuses on the impacts of both climate change and climate change mitigation strategies in grasslands. Specifically, he and his students examine how adding a substance called biochar to grassland soil can combat climate change by storing carbon for the long-term and how these biochar additions impact the structure and functioning of grassland plant communities. Additionally, he spearheaded a science communication project called the 1000 STEM Women Project (flipgrid.com/7bad90), which curates a library of 90-second scientist introduction videos for use in K-12 classrooms. The overall goal of the project is to diversify the view that students have of scientists and STEM careers.

Episode 31- Chris Everett- Wilmington on Fire
"The Wilmington Massacre was a bloody attack on the African-American community by a heavily armed white mob with the support of the North Carolina Democratic Party on November 10, 1898 in the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. It is considered one of the only successful examples of a coup d'état in the United States that left countless numbers of African-American citizens dead and exiled from the city. This event was the spring board for the white supremacy movement and Jim Crow segregation throughout the state of North Carolina and the American South. “Wilmington on Fire” gives a compelling historical and present day look at this event showing how the violent overthrow of an existing government not only cemented white supremacy in the city of Wilmington and the state of North
