Jon Campbell-2020 FisherPoets Gathering-Liberty Theatre

Jon Campbell-2020 FisherPoets Gathering-Liberty Theatre

Well hello…and welcome to the FisherPoetry Podcast, a showcase of prose, poetry, and song written and performed by those in the commercial fishing community…mostly ;-). For today’s podcast we’re going to hear from Jon Campbell, a FisherPoet out of Charlestown, RI. Sadly, Jon passed away on January 9th of 2022…and with him passed one of the great FisherPoets of our time. To say that Jon was man of many talents…a musician, a poet, a writer…is an understatement. It was a real privilege to attend his performances and, according to the Rhode Island Hall of Fame where he was inducted in 2019, Jon summed up career with: “When you live in an interesting place where interesting people are doing interesting things, all you have to do is make it rhyme.” Rhyme you did, Jon, and thank you for all you gave to us. For this episode Jon Campbell shares his performances of “Atlantic or Pacific?”, “Fredrick’s of Galilee”, “The Wall” and “You Might Be Missin’ Fish”, recorded at the Liberty Theater on February 28th, 2020 as part of the FisherPoets Gathering in Astoria, Oregon. Thanks again, Jon, and may you always sail calm seas. Jon Bradshaw-2016 FisherPoets Gathering-Columbia Theater

Jon Bradshaw-2016 FisherPoets Gathering-Columbia Theater

Welcome to the FisherPoetry Podcast, a showcase of prose, poetry, and song written and performed by those in the commercial fishing community…mostly. Thanks for joining us today!. For today’s podcast we’re going to hear from Jon Branshaw, a FisherPoet out of Westport, WA. Starting at the age of 16 working on the back deck of his father’s boat, the FV John David, Jon sorted crab and chopped bait to earn the princely sum of $125 dollars a week. The next season, though, Jon took his place at the rail alongside his older brother Tom, earning a full share. That began a 42-year journey working up and down the West Coast from Cordova, AK to Newport, OR. Five years ago, Jon traded his rain gear for a steering wheel and now hauls fish for Ocean Gold Seafoods in Westport. In his spare time Jon enjoys camping, golf, growing vegetables and spending time with his family. Jon’s most recent appearance was at the Durango Cowboy Poets Gathering in Durango, CO where he acquitted himself well, wowing the crowds there just like he’s done for years at the FisherPoet’s Gathering. This session was recorded during the 2016 FisherPoets Gathering at the Columbia Theater in Astoria, Oregon. Enjoy! Pat Dixon & Moe Bowstern-2007 FisherPoets Gathering-Wet Dog Saloon

Welcome to the FisherPoetry Podcast, a showcase of prose, poetry, and song written and performed by those in the commercial fishing community…mostly ;-) In this episode, our first in this series, we reached deep into the FisherPoetry archives to haul out one of my very first recordings from the FisherPoetry Gathering, an annual event that brings out a school of FisherPoets and their works. This is also one of my favorite stories and it’s fair to say that it’s the one that kindled both my interest in and love of Fisher Poetry. It’s a great story about two people, one at sea and the other ashore, sharing the events of their daily life. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did…and still do. Read by Pat Dixon and Moe Bowstern at the Wet Dog Saloon in Astoria, Oregon for the 2007 FisherPoets Gathering here's “Ship to Shore”. Enjoy!
