Building better communities with Vijai Kumar
The Generalists are joined by Vijai Kumar to discuss the threat to Canadian and North American communities as a result of poor land-use planning and walk-able infrastructure.
Vijai is a public policy enthusiast with a range of research experience at multiple governing levels. Currently, he works in the think tank/non profit space doing policy research.
Being a proponent of community wealth building, Vijai volunteers to address the crisis of homelessness in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). He is a proponent of community land trusts (CLTs) and “missing middle” infrastructure, providing research support to community groups and nonprofits around affordable housing solutions.
He also enjoys demystifying economic policy for non-economist audiences through his writing, which you can find on Eklectish and on his blog, The Kumar Effect.

Bemnet predominately operates in the field of consultation and has given advice to clients in Canada, USA and Sub-Saharan Africa. He’s lived in Ethiopia and supported a USAID funded initiative focused on the promotion of urban health in Addis Ababa. He currently works for a Canadian financial institution consulting on risk & strategy topics. He received his Master of International Public Policy from the Balsillie School of International Affairs in 2016.

The Generalists introduce the podcast and discuss what Eklectish is. Afterwards, they speak with social entrepreneur Nick Gibson about his company Our Better Selves and self-improvement.
Nick Gibson is a social entrepreneur, speaker, coach/facilitator, and a change agent. Nick has worked at Nielsen (a global market research consulting firm) with clients ranging from consumer product manufacturers Coca-Cola, Conagra and Lindt to retailers like Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaw. He will be the first to point out how much he learned from his previous work in consulting, but his university student government experience and his leadership development experience (including with Sigma Chi) revealed to him that there were bigger problems in the world that he was not adequately addressing in his day job. This tension forced him to make a change and found Our Better Selves: a venture focused on unleashing a vibrant, empowered, and thriving community of change agents focused on solving critical problems of human flourishing aligned with their values. He works directly with change agents (creating an empowering environment to thrive and solve problems), organizations looking to create better workplace culture, and partners who can serve them in various capacities.
