We also briefly mention some big New York Times article on replica handbags, which *we think* is relevant but we didn't actually read the article.

We also bring back audio podcast chapters with this episode. Adding chapters tacks on several more minutes to post-production so hopefully someone out there appreciates them. If your podcast player supports chapters you can more easily skip around to different segments of the episode. For various reasons we've been wanting to experiment with producing a video edition of The HourTime Show for a few months now, and we've finally decided to give it a shot.

The audio podcast will not got away! But, we basically wanted to give folks an option of watching video since we know that's important to folks. There will be some bugs as we figure out the workflow, but hopefully everything works properly.

For now, the video version will be found on YouTube. Again, you can click here to watch the first episode. Like and subscribe, and all that. (Yes, it's being hosted on my personal YouTube channel for now.) We might expand it to other platforms (like Spotify) but I (Nicholas) don't actually know how that will affect the audio feed. John and Victor discuss a bunch of stuff this week including Yema doing a Kickstarter for a Wristrmaster Traveler Micro-Rotor, which vaguely resembles a Royal Oak. If you back the Kickstarter it can be yours for roughly $1,500 but if you wait for retail availability it'll set you back closer to $3,000. Ouch!

We then shift to a discussion of Timex's collab... thing with Fortnite. We're cautiously pro-VR/AR/etc here but this has us scratching our heads... but we could just be old, who knows. There's actually a decent discussion here on the evolution of media and various moral panics ("comic books will destroy children's souls!" etc.) so you're in for a treat.

The last big topic we discuss is vintage watches. We're slightly skeptical of vintage watches because you generally don't know what you're getting but John recently purchased a Seiko Speedtimer and Victor got a Duward Aquastar. Hear them chew over their decisions!

Speaking of vintage watches, there was a really good article over at Fratello about Zoomers apparently loving them.

Moving on.

John opens the show with his thoughts on the Benrus 3061, which we basically all love. If you look up "field watch" in the Watch Geek Dictionary you'll see a photo of it. Not bad for a $600 jawn that was featured in the movie Bullitt!

We then turn to a topic Nicholas saw in a local newspaper about how everyone hates Daylight Saving Time, and that its days may be numbered. We go into the history or "point," perhaps, of switching the clocks back and forth every spring and autumn, and basically land on the idea of: pick one and stick with it.

At this point, Victor brings up Swatch's old idea, from the late 90s, of "Internet Time," which was an attempt to create a universal time zone, in a sense, that used a measurement called beats and was featured in Phantasy Star Online. Let's bring it back!

Victor then runs us through a $30,000 Zenith psychedelic chrono that he believes resembles those old Trapper Keepers.

Lastly, we go over the Omega MoonSwatch. Turns out that A) John bought one in Poland a few months ago and B) it's going on tour over the next couple of weeks in a few cities in California and Florida. Hello and welcome to yet another exciting edition of The HourTime Show, the official podcast of WristWatchReview.com. We open this week with a bit of an explanation as to why we've released episodes at a weird clip over the past few weeks. Basically, between travel and work stuff, we have not been able to consistently get a quorum at our usual recording time. Victor and I (Nicholas; I write these notes) will be in and out with travel of our own over the next few weeks as well, but don't fret: this is just the dog days of summer, and we'll be back to our regular-as-rain schedule probably by mid-September.

We also have a question: Should we do video? YouTube is making a big podcast "push," so we're kicking around the idea of doing a video version of HourTime. We don't mind either way, but if THE PEOPLE DEMAND IT we'll consider it more seriously. Nicholas's recent appearance on This Week In Tech is a good preview of what this would look like.

This week we discuss a range of issues including Nicholas's extended thoughts on his brand new Garmin 955 Solar smartwatch, which he bought to sort of give him a kick in the pants to get better at jogging. It's pretty good, especially the battery life! We'll see how the new "sport" Apple Watch, which is expected to be announced in early September, compares.

Victor then gives his thoughts on the Redwood Tactical V2, a solar diver that he also likes!

We then also talk travel watch strategies: Do you risk getting a nice watch stolen or lost, or do you buck up and say, "Let's go, baby!" Do you bring several watches? This great article over at Fratello goes over some travel watch ideas going into this more. Victor's solution: building his own watch!

We then touch on an updated Oris Divers Sixty Five, featuring the brand's own Caliber 400 movement. I can't link to it at the moment I'm writing these notes, but I'm sure if you Google around *right now* you'll find it.

The first is the very strong rumor of an SKX-style GMT coming from Seiko, uh, any minute now. Victor has the lowdown on the main site if you want to read the specs, but it appears we're looking at a $500-ish GMT that very closely resembles the SKX/5KX family of divers. Are your pals interested? Maybe... maybe not.

Nicholas then notes he recently broke the four-digit mark for the very first time, having purchased the Seiko SPB239 (technically the JDM version from Gnomon Watches which is the SBDC141.) He received the watch in the mail literally the day after recording so stay tuned for the full review. (Spoiler: It's gooood... mostly.)

Lastly, the main event: we discuss the "culture" surrounding getting a discount while buying watches. Nicholas spotted an article on Fratello the other day talking about whether or not getting a discount at ADs is over, and it sparked a discussion on the whole deal.

This week we open with some house business. First, I (Nicholas) would like to apologize to everyone who reads these show notes because Spotify had recently and *without our authorization* been inserting donation links into them. They claim it was a bug but who knows. I am not exaggerating when I say I was pretty annoyed when I discovered that.

John then calls out Teddy Baldassarre's team for wanting to pay us to swap a set of affiliate links we have on the site for links of their own. This was news to me when John brought it up (he handles the business stuff when it comes to the site itself), but is another example of something we talk about all the time: Is all of this *watch stuff* journalism? Is it mere content for your social media feeds? Does anyone else care about this? Anyway, as I've said in the past, I'm a fan of Teddy's YouTube channel and think he does very good stuff, so we'll see how this plays out.

We then touch on something we noticed on Worn and Wound a few days ago, policing the use of the phrase "poor man." Now, it turns out that my comment was *eventually* published, but it wasn't published for at least a day!

Anyway, we are fired up!!!

We then move onto the idea of the ethics of collecting WWII-era watches. John stumbled upon a Ukrainian eBay seller who is selling what he claims to be watches produced for Nazi Germany's military. What are the rules here? We debate.

Lastly, we then dive into the just-announced Google Pixel Watch. Overall, our impressions are along the lines of, "Well, if this gives Android users a solid smartwatch for the first time maybe ever (?), then that's good."

Yes we've got a full house here this week on The HourTime Show, with John opening the discussion with some talk on his SEESTERN (yes, the name is capitalized) and how it compares to an actual Doxa Sub 300T he has on loan. If you thought the real Doxa would blow away the SEESTERN in terms of build quality and so forth, well, you're 100 percent correct. But, one retails for roughly $2,000 while the other goes for less than $200. So, you know.

Nicholas then tells the tale of his brand new Pagani Design PD1651, a Rolex Yacht-Master "homage" that is baaasically a piece of junk: the bezel is misaligned and the date wheel doesn't advance with the hour; you have to manually change the date by pulling out the crown one click. It's too bad because, as Victor says, from 10 feet away it looks pretty cool! The rubber strap is awesome, to be fair to Pagani Design. (Nicholas misspoke by saying it was leather; it's rubber.)

We then touch on the MoonSwatch, now that the dust has settled.

That's right: we've got us a full four-wolf moon this week!

Victor kicks off the wrist check with a watch he recently assembled from parts featuring an Elgin dial, which we then explain what that means. Patrick is wearing the Mido Ocean Star GMT, which he's in the process of reviewing. This kicks off a quick discussion on different types of movements, who makes what, etc. John and Nicholas (well, really Nicholas) merely smile and nods here. Speaking of John and Nicholas, John has an Omega Speedmaster Professional and Nicholas has his PT5000-based SteelDive. The crown is too small to turn comfortably but the watch seems to keep time pretty well. For less than $200 it's hard to complain.

This brings us to one of our main discussions of the week, and that's whether or not people like Nicholas, who like watches but who maybe don't have a spare $5,000 to buy every shiny Omega that comes down the pike, are perhaps "doing it wrong" by gravitating toward brands like SteelDive. We've touched on this in the past but now Patrick gives his take. John adds some interesting insight from the world of alternative investing, and how that's driving up the cost of some watches.

Very possibly, especially if as John points out you've got one of those G-Shocks that can display tide data. The way things are going, we may find out soon enough.

These are bands like Seestern, Steeldive, Heimdallr, etc. and whether or not they're "acceptable" for watch fans who don't necessarily have $5,000 to drop on the latest Omega. As much as I'd like the NTTD Omega, eh, I don't exactly have $10,000 to spend on a watch right now.

We then briefly touch on the upcoming Watches & Wonders trade show, and talk a bit about trade shows in general. They're cool, sure, but don't feel bad if you've never been to one.

This is one of our trademark meandering / semi-ridiculous episodes where we discuss two million things including, eventually, watches.

After a quick dalliance into the realm of alternative facts, we open this week with a wide-ranging discussion about the just-announced, and quickly sold out, Seiko 5 Sports x Worn & Wound 10th Anniversary Limited Edition. We mostly use the watch's existence to discuss the intersection between journalism and "content," and whether or not that's a distinction that means anything anymore. To Gen X folks like John and Victor, that absolutely was a distinction that mattered. But do Millennials care, as a matter of course, about publications releasing branded watches? (Nicholas, the show's Millennial correspondent, doesn't really care; everything is content.) Do Zoomers? If you're a Millennial or Zoomer, please let us know because we have no idea.

One thing we'd like to correct, for the record: We mention on the air that this Worn and Wound LE is based on the $100-ish Seiko SNK803, but Producer Andrew has kindly informed us that it's more likely based on the $275-ish Seiko SRPH29. We regret the error.

We then move onto some sort of meta discussion on, well, the meaning of life. Buckle up.

Yes, Nicholas has a problem. The crown on the PT5000 model is a liiiitle small, making it very hard to turn. Not fun. Nicholas also bought a nice Orient Star off eBay, that he's quite satisfied with! If only he had a nice place to go!

Pretty fascinating! John also explains why he wrote the post, which I think is also interesting, given my ostensible career in media. (If it's not clear, Nicholas writes these show notes.)

Nicholas then very briefly touches on a Longines event that he attended this week (where he met Teddy Baldassarre!), which explains his poor audio quality this week. Look for a post on the site in a few days.

We've got a big and juicy news-filled podcast this week. After some initial banter about watch size preferences, we dive into the just-announced King Seiko re-launch and an interesting interview the CEO of Tag Heuer gave to Hodinkee. 

With King Seiko, we discuss our initial reaction to the new watches (mixed, though Nicholas is largely a fan) and what we would have done differently. One major complaint people seem to have is the use of the 6R movement, in a $1700 watch. This movement has somewhat of a mixed reputation online (it doesn't appear to keep time very well, for one), and to see it in a watch at this price point is... well, people aren't happy.

With Tag, we mainly discuss where the brand "fits" in the watch world today, and how we might market a watch brand specifically to a younger demo.

In this interview, Alex walks us through how and why he created Velle Alexander, explains what it's like actually creating a leather watch strap, and generally educates us on all things leather.

John joins the pod right around here to explain how things were back in The Day, where you could buy a Speedmaster for like $2,000. Those days are gone, leaving people like Nicholas who are new to watches and don't have thousands of dollars to drop on run-of-the-mill divers shopping at brands like Steeldive and San Martin.

In the meantime, your pals discuss a handful of watch-related topics, including their thoughts on traveling with expensive watches, why it suddenly feels like many more people are "aware" of watches than 10 or 15 years ago (blame social media), and whether or not Rolex is as big as we think it is. We sorta think that, as big as you think Rolex is, it may be even bigger!

We then go over some of the watches we wore over the holidays: John wore a Speedmaster Professional and a Cronos he recently reviewed, Nicholas (as previously mentioned) wore his G Shock and Apple Watch, while Victor wore his Sandos. Victor is also waiting for a chronograph to arrive from eBay, so we'll return to that when he gets it.

Next, we discuss a $1500 Shinola that WristWatchReview Managing Editor Patrick Kansa recently covered on the site. "A complete mess," in the words of John.

Lastly, we design live on the air a coqui-inspired watch that Nicholas can proudly wear the next time he's in Puerto Rico. Here's what a coqui sounds and looks like if you have no idea what we're talking about.

Victor is having a nice family meal and Nicholas briefly brings up his on again, off again World of Warcraft addiction. 

Moving onto watches, the pod very loosely discusses 2021 in watches. Victor brings up the meca quartz-powered Brew 8 Bit while discussing fun designs, Nicholas brings up Seiko's move up-market and whether or not people will tolerate paying $1000 for a watch with alignment issues, and Victor brings up the Seiko SNK809 as a a good modding base. Victor then delivers a history lesson as to why telegraph wires are built along train tracks.

Lastly, the crew discusses watches that "got away" this year, including Nicholas's rather sub-par customer service experience at a Tourneau that led to him not buying the bronze Hamilton Khaki Mechanical and an Oris Divers Sixty Five that Victor missed out on eBay.

We start this week with a quick explanation of where we've been. Nicholas had to make an unexpected trip to Puerto Rico to attend a family matter but he's back in New York now and everything is OK. The trip did provide a good opportunity to wear the solar powered G-Shock (GWM5610-1), which definitely did a good job.

The trip to Puerto Rico also inspired Nicholas to start wearing his Apple Watch around the house again. This, in turn, sparks a wider discussion on smart watches, whether they're "real" watches or not, and the role that the Apple Watch plays in introducing folks to watches. This, by the way, is something Nicholas recently wrote about for HODINKEE (!), how the Apple Watch rekindled his interest in watches. Please read it!

We then turn the discussion toward more traditional watches, and Rikki goes into what he's been wearing the most lately, the Horage Tourbillon-1, and his attitude toward the wider hobby and how being a content creator influences his thinking. Rikki also recounts his recent visit to Dubai Watch World, including the "vibe" of the show given that we're still dealing with Covid.

There's a bit more to the episode, including watch media talk, the role of influencers, and good (and bad!) affordable watches, but these show notes have gone on long enough.

We then move onto some Apple talk, focusing on the newly released iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. Should you upgrade? That depends on where you're coming from, iPhone-wise, but certainly the macro photography mode of the 13 Pro would come in handy if you take a lot of watch photos. Instagram, here we come.

First, apologies for missing last week. Both John and Nicholas were unavailable to record at the usual time so it was easier to skip a week.

Moving on, we open this week with a very quick John rant on the evolution of watch media and whether or not people are merely chasing money and fame on social media or are actually into watches. It's hard to tell sometimes. 

The main topic of the week, however, is the new Tudor Pelagos FXD. Our perception is that it received a mixed reception online, and that's our reaction too: mixed. Tudor had a pretty good year with some of their earlier releases (like the silver BB58!), but this one doesn't quite knock it out of the park for us. Ah well.

John then brings up a really nice looking new Casio, the MT-G MTGB2000YBD1. The name / model number is a little much, but we're super impressed. The price ($1,200) is perhaps a little high for what amounts to a nice G Shock. That then prompts a discussion on the "right" watch for a good long backpacking trip in Europe. Producer Andrew had a good suggestion: this Citizen Promaster. Technically it's a diver but it could be a good choice.

Hilariously, John then casually mentions that he just bought a Speedmaster. This is what's known as "burying the lede," folks! John then takes a minute to go over some of the Speedmaster variations for folks who may not be familiar with them.

Victor, meanwhile, discusses a Michael Kors watch he bought for the sole purpose of harvesting the links for use on his Sandoz diver. Victor then discusses a Soner square watch he's got on. The AliExpress Zenith that we've talked about at length over the past few weeks has arrived. And boy, it's a hunk of junk! Look, it's a $25 watch that A) works and B) very vaguely resembles the Zenith Chronomaster Sport, but that's as far as we're willing to go. I love a storyline that pays off.

Moving on, we then discuss a new Rick and Morty edition G-Shock. Ehhhh. It's not terrible, but as Victor details it just feels sorta lazy? It goes on sale tomorrow for $170 if you want to add it to your collection, or are shopping for a big Rick and Morty fan.

Our last topic this week is a just-announced partnership between PC gaming accessory maker Razer and Panerai; they're making a watch! There's a short teaser video we found that gives hints of what to expect. Weird, but we're here for it.

Eventually we move onto other topics, including the Apple Watch Series 7 (which sorta gets a "meh" from us, at least in the context of "Should I upgrade from a Series 6?") and alternatives to the Apple Watch. Victor suggests looking into Garmin and Withings.

Our final meaty topic of the week is a discussion of good introductory watches (which is hilarious because John suggested this topic and he's not even here to talk about it). Nicholas votes for the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical, Victor votes for Vaer and Kuoe, and producer Andrew suggests the Tissot Le Locle and the Tissot Visodate.

This, in turn, sparks a discussion on daytime running lights and other wacky DIY exploits. In this house we believe in science, and so on. John joins a bit later and has some sort of GMT Tudor.

Onto the main topic of the week: Seiko's new automatic chronos. We generally like the release, but we're slightly skeptical (OK, super skeptical) about the $3000+ price tag. 

John then joins the show and walks us through his thought process for buying a new watch, or buying anything of value ("any number of things"), including guitar pedals, cars, Willard homages, and more. ProTip: Want a Willard-ish watch actually made by Seiko? Consider the recently released 1970 Re-interpretation, which you can find for roughly $1000 on Chrono 24.

We wrap up the episode with a homework assignment: What, in your opinion, is the definitive "first watch" for someone just getting into the hobby? We then cast our eyes upon the just-announced Apple Watch Series 7, which has a slightly larger screen and is now dustproof. But is it a good upgrade? Sorta depends on where you're coming from, but if you've got a Series 6 or 5, eh, why not try to get another year out of it? Nicholas has a Series 4 and intends to keep that around for at least one more year. If it ain't broke, et cetera et cetera.

We wrap up this week with a chat on the latest Casio G Shock smartwatch, which John has been reviewing over the past few days. He likes it!

We can all agree that Rolex makes nice watches, sure, but are they any nicer than AP or Patek that warrant jumping through so many hoops? Or, for us mere mortals, something like an Oris? We debate!

Next up, we discuss Patrick's recent review of the Islander ISL-38, a Datejust-esque (or is that SARB-esque, as Victor suggests?) piece that is available from LongIslandWatch.com. (If you're not familiar with Marc from Long Island Watch's YouTube channel, well, you should be. Good stuff!) Nicholas owns an Islander or two and thinks they offer good value for someone who's just getting into watches or has a more modest budget. 

We then move onto the Timex x Todd Snyder MK1 Bootcamp, a field watch we also recently reviewed on the site. Folks, we've got some mixed feelings on this one, which John describes as a pastiche along the lines of an anime version of a World War II watch. The strap looks cool, but otherwise? Ehhhhh. Hey, at least it's cheap ($138).

We close the episode with John explaining his philosophy on watch journalism and why he prefers highlighting smaller, lesser-known brands that are still affordable rather than focusing on high-end such-and-such you see highlighted on a lot of other websites. Once upon a time, Hunter S. Thompson wore a Rolex not because "it's a Rolex" but because it could do a job while taking a beating.

We open this week with some Apple Watch news. According to a recent report in the WSJ, it may soon gain a whole bunch of health-related capabilities including the ability to measure blood pressure. While we may not necessarily need these capabilities today, they do go some way toward fulfilling Tim Cook's 2019 suggestion that Apple's biggest contribution to mankind will be related to health. 

We then take a quick right into strap discussion, including rumors suggesting the upcoming Apple Watch Series 7 will not work with Series 6 (and older) straps and how new straps can help rekindle your interest in old watches. YouTuber Teddy Baldassarre, who we like a lot actually, recently made this suggestion and we wholeheartedly agree!

Next up, some of the watches that were announced at the recent Geneva Watch Days trade show... Nicholas doesn't get 'em. They're *very* fancy and impressive in their own right, but are they really the same thing as like an SKX or Seamaster or Oris? IDK! We're talking pieces like this Urwerk, this Girard-Perregaux, and this Greubel Forsey. 

We close out the week with our two cents on brand management, or lack thereof, focusing on Citizen, Seiko, and Bulova.

We open this week with a discussion of two watches that were just announced: the $49,000 Grand Seiko SLGA008 (aka the "tree ring dial") and the $895 Bulova MIL-SHIPS-W-2181. Neither of us are likely to afford the Grand Seiko any time soon—listen as we lament about not investing in bitcoin when we first heard about it *more than a decade ago*—but the Bulova is pretty handsome and fairly priced. As Victor points out, you could get a WMT watch and get the same "look" for about half the price, but sometimes you're OK with spending twice the amount to get a logo.

To follow up on the bitcoin tangent we get to in this part of the episode, it's somewhat difficult to determine what a bitcoin was worth in December 2009 when Victor read the white paper because there was almost literally zero people using it. The nearest I could find was this chart from BitcoinWiki which suggests that you could have purchased roughly 1,300 bitcoins for $1 in October 2009. There wasn't exactly a Coinbase back then so this is all somewhat academic; the point is that if you had somehow spent *any* amount of money on bitcoin in late 2009 and held onto it (big if, admittedly) you proooobably would have no problem buying a couple of Grand Seikos today. 

By December 2010, when Nicholas had first heard about bitcoin, things were a little more established and it was worth roughly 30 cents per bitcoin. So, $100 invested in bitcoin on Dec. 31 2010 would have got you about 333 bitcoins, which is worth about $16 million today.

Anyway, back to watches.

We open this week's show with a brief discussion on the Apple Watch and some of the rumors we've been seeing in recent weeks, including hints at an all-new design for this year's models (ie, Series 7). Apple usually hosts an event in September announcing its new iPhones and Watches for the coming year, so ~~watch~~ this space.

We then highlight the new Norqain Adventure Neverest, which both Victor and Nicholas are into. That, then, sparks a discussion on what should and shouldn't be considered an in-house movement, a topic Victor and Patrick also discussed a few weeks ago. Does a brand have to make the movement on their own for it to be considered "in-house" or is there any wiggle room there?

The last major topic this week is the new 38mm Oris Divers Sixty-Five Caliber 400 Limited Edition for Hodinkee. At $3,800 there's quite a bit of a premium over a standard issue Divers Sixty-Five but what are you gonna do? Listen as Nicholas gushes over the product photography here and wistfully remembers his brief interest in film photography. Time comes for us all.

Oh, and if you're a glutton for punishment feast your eyes on this Undone Astro Boy. Yeesh. You're better off with the Unimatic SpongeBob!

In news from The Real World, President Biden issued an executive order last week that asks the FTC to create so-called "right to repair" regulations, which basically means that manufacturers will be required to make available spare parts, schematics, and other tools so either you can fix it yourself or you can take it to the repair shop of your choice, even if that repair shop isn't officially affiliated with the manufacturer itself. So, we discuss the watch connection!

We then play a little game, invented by Victor, attempting to link cars and watches. IE, what watch comes to mind when you think of a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic? A Jaguar? A GMC Suburban? A Dodge Charger? After you play along at home feel free to send more ideas to tips@wristwatchreview.com.

We end the show with a quick note on some Real Weirdness going down in the world of Watch YouTube, where a prominent YouTuber named Just One More Watch temporarily had his channel banned following a counterfeit claim after he published a video on how to spot a fake watch. A handful of other YouTubers then took it upon themselves to remove their own similar videos. So, will this create a chilling effect on future "how to spot a fake watch" videos? Be careful: the tentacles of Big Watch know no bounds.

Back to this here episode, like many podcasts your humble hosts usually banter a bit before actually hitting the record button, and one of the topics in this week's Banter Session actually made it to the air, and that's the idea of watch companies turning some of their most popular models (think the Seiko Willard, the Tudor Black Bay, the Timex Q Reissue) into "platforms." These are watches that serve as a base for a million other watches that come later. The recently announced Seiko SPB237, which Nicholas loves but will retail for $1200 when it's released in June, is but one example: it's a Willard with a slightly fancier textured dial. This also prompts a discussion of whether or not Seiko has succeeded in its quest to move upmarket with its prices. Also in this week's episode: brief discussions on that Budweiser-branded G-Shock and some Dan Henry chronos.
