Ep. 60 - Five Minute Friday: Is Your Team Humble, Hungry, and Smart?
In this episode, I share a concept I learned from the book "The Ideal Team Player" by Patrick Lencioni. For me, this concept of the 3 essential virtues (Humble, Hungry, Smart) has always been applied to hiring/ on-boarding staff, but I think it's very applicable when we look at developing leadership in our sports teams or even business teams. Before we can really trust members of our team to lead well, they need to embody these values or else they will struggle immensely to have an IMPACT.
I hope this episode gives you a framework for this concept, and motivates you to want to read more and start assessing where your team is at so you can grow them in these areas.

If we want to see meaningful change in our personal lives or with our teams, this formula provides a great lens to view what is preventing change from happening and how we can start to generate momentum.
C = D x V x FS > R
Want to know what this means and some thoughts on how you can apply this to your life and any situations you're dealing with in order to increase the impact you have on those around you? Then take a listen! I hope this adds value to your day and motivates you as we head into the weekend.

Ep. 50 - David Jack on "Magnifying the Good" and Why Motivating with Joy Always Wins
David Jack One of the world's most recognized sports performance and conditioning coaches, David Jack creates experiences that help people discover, co-create, and activate the greatness that lies within them. "I believe that as we use our strengths; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, to serve, we are given more. Fitness has been relegated to 6 pack abs, a faster 40, a bigger bench, a better Fran time. Goals are good, and they matter. But if all we train and prepare for is to improve our fitness metrics, or look better for others that judge us, then that’s all we get. But as we cast our Eyes Up, and choose to Rise Up, acting out of inspiration with intention for purposes greater than self, amazing things begin to happen. When great people, places and things come together to create the change they seek in the world, the positive effects cascade forever. This is my mission, my activprayer: To use my God given gifts, talents and passions to inspire, connect, teach and share with others in an effort to change the way we look at fitness, ourselves and those around us. To help people get ready to be ready when they are called upon, becoming the who THEY were created to be, in order to do the WHAT ONLY THEY CAN DO." – David Jack

Ep. 42 - Anthony Renna on Running Your Own Race

Ep. 42 - Anthony Renna on Running Your Own Race
Anthony Renna was one of the first guys to put out a podcast focused on strength & conditioning. The Strength Coach Podcast featured Mike Boyle and a host of other great professionals, and Anthony helped usher in an era of podcasts in our industry.
Since then, Anthony has created several other podcasts as well as Strength Coach TV where he goes all over the country to bring us video tours of strength & conditioning facilities. He has gotten so busy with his media enterprise that he barely trains any more, yet he is making a huge impact on the profession.
Anthony’s approach has always been “the man behind the man,” but as I’ve gotten to know Anthony, I’ve really been able to see how he’s making a difference. In this episode of The Impact Show, I talk to Anthony about his path and we go into depth on the impact he’s making.

Ep. 41 - THE IMPACT SHOW - The Art of Sports Science with Fergus Connolly

Ep. 41 - THE IMPACT SHOW - The Art of Sports Science with Fergus Connolly
Sports science has become one of the hottest topics and trends in the world of strength & conditioning. It seems like everyone is trying to find the holy grail of athlete monitoring or how to utilize sports science to find the key to athletic success. Millions of dollars have been poured into technology designed to enhance our understanding of athletes so that coaches can make better decisions about training and practice. Unfortunately, it does look like those dollars have had much of a return on investment for most programs yet.
This could be due to many factors:
Coaches not knowing how to take advantage of the technology Coaches not making decisions based on the technology The technology not giving coaches the most important information necessary Information overload Coaches not knowing what to do with all of the informationIt could also be that technology can’t tell us everything that is going on. It can’t account for the human factor in sport, so coaches still need to make instinctive decisions and athletes still need to make plays.
Director of Sports Science & Operations for the University of Michigan Football Program, Fergus Connolly Ph.D., has a unique perspective on the sports science trend. While Connolly is fully educated on the technology, he also has a deep understanding of the human element present in sports. In his new book, Game Changer – The Art of Sports Science, he goes into great depth on the ways teams win games.
At first, this seems like just another book on winning, but it’s not. Instead, it’s an in-depth study of sports at both the macro and micro level that makes you think about sports from a unique perspective.
In this episode of The Impact Show, Jim & Fergus discuss the impact that sports science is having on sports and how we can use it to truly make a difference.

Ep. $) - THE IMPACT SHOW - Making a Difference From the Inside with the Power Athlete Guys

Ep. 40) - THE IMPACT SHOW - Making a Difference From the Inside with the Power Athlete Guys
Sometimes you see a problem and you complain about it. Other times, you see a problem and you do something about. But, making a change to an existing structure or organization is not easy. That’s why it’s so impressive that the gang at Power Athlete – John Welbourn, Tex McQuilken and Luke Summers – has been able to influence the way CrossFit boxes around the world approach training.
After a very successful career in the NFL, John Welbourn was asked to create a CrossFit program for football players. He knew that a traditional CrossFit program was not appropriate for football players, but instead of saying no, he saw an opportunity to make a difference from the inside. He embarked on a mission to teach CrossFit trainers the difference between traditional CrossFit and a systematic and progressive training program for athletes.
Of course, this was met with resistance, but that did not deter John from spreading his message. Over time, he was able to show coaches all over the world the light and his Power Athlete programs are now a part of CrossFit boxes all over the world.
Along the way, Tex McQuilken and Luke Summers joined John on the mission and helped speed up the process and create more momentum than ever. Together, these guys are a colorful band of characters with a serious mission and strong educational background.
In this episode, we get to hear how these guys are making a difference from the inside. They discuss all of the struggles with this approach as well as the successes and how they are making a difference. We also talk about how difficult it can be to change peoples minds, especially when their education is somewhat limited.
Power Athlete is about to embark on a new journey as they open a new facility in Texas, so we also get to hear their thought process on this move from California and what they’re doing to prepare for it.
For more information on Power Athlete programs, visit PowerAthleteHQ or listen to Power Athlete Radio on your favorite podcast platform.

Ep. 39 - THE IMPACT SHOW - How to write a book and launch a product

Ep. 39 - THE IMPACT SHOW - How to write a book and launch a product
Over the past few months, I’ve been spending a lot of time talking about how to write a book or launch a product. The reason for this is the recent release of the new IYCA book Principles of Athletic Strength & Conditioning. This project took months of hard work from a lot of people to make happen, and the process has been amazing.
I want to share this process with you because I know there are plenty of people out there with a book or product stuck in their head and you just don’t know what to do with it. No matter what some people might try to tell you, this is not an easy process, so why should you re-invent the wheel when I can help shorten your learning curve?
Even if you don’t care about how to write a book or launch a product, listening to the thought process that went into this project can help you think about other business opportunities in a slightly different way. Seeing holes in the market and building relationships are things that are valuable no matter what kind of business you’re in. Finding the right contributors, editors and designers may be specific to this book, but marketing, utilizing a team, setting up your web site and e-commerce are all applicable to just about any project these days.
I already understood the process of how to write a book from writing them in the past, but this one was a collaboration of 17 strength & conditioning professionals so it was a different kind of animal than doing most of it on my own. I hope you enjoy hearing some of the process I used and everything that went into this. If you are thinking about a product or want to know more about how to write a book, I’d love to help in any way I can. Shoot me a message at jim@iyca.org and I’ll try to give you what I can.

Ep 38 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Aaron Byrd How to Make a Difference

Ep 38 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Aaron Byrd How to Make a Difference
Aaron Byrd owns one of the most successful soccer training businesses in the country. As a former college and professional soccer players, Aaron clearly has the skills necessary to help improve a soccer player’s abilities, but it’s not the soccer training that makes the biggest difference in people’s lives – it’s the lessons he teaches through his training programs.
Aaron started his business by helping two kids of a friend who wanted to get better at soccer. Two turned into four, four turned into eight, and before he knew it, Byrd had over 100 kids enrolled in camps and training programs. Since then, his business has expanded exponentially and he has hired a staff of coaches that implement his programs in multiple locations throughout southeast Michigan.
As his business grew, Aaron realized what an impact he was making on young athletes. That realization made him take that role more seriously, and it has become a huge part of his business and life.
In this episode, Aaron shares real-life examples of how he makes an impact through his business, and he talks about his journey as both a coach and business-owner. You can learn more about Aaron Byrd and his Next Level Training soccer programs at http://www.next-leveltraining.com/ or follow him on Instagram at NLTsoccer

Ep. 38 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Brett Klika on Selling Out Your Summer Program

Ep. 37 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Brett Klika on Selling Out Your Summer Program
I had Brett Klika on the show a while back to talk about Youth Training concepts, and he was fantastic. I recently had him speak at the IYCA Summit, and he was great! People loved his presentation, but they loved his hands-on work even more. He also joined us at the Sports Performance Business Academy, and I quickly realized that his loves talking about business topics just as much as youth training.
After several more conversations, we decided it was time to have him back on the show to talk about Selling Out Your Summer Program. In the episode, Brett delivers incredible ideas on how to grow your business, and it’s not just about your summer programs. The tips he gives will help you grow all aspects of your business, and his concepts aren’t exclusive to youth sports training. Everything he talks about would work in just about any business setting with minor tweaks based on your products and customers.
Brett is like me in many ways – he loves training, he loves making a difference and he loves business development. He’s pretty much a living example of everything the IYCA stands for and I think you’re going to love this episode. Get ready to take some notes – I have multiple pages!

Ep. 36 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Evolving as a Coach

Ep. 36 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Evolving as a Coach
This edition of The Impact Show is all about Evolving as a Coach, but it can go deeper than that. Your evolution may also include progress as a parent, spouse, friend, businessperson or simply becoming a better version of yourself. In Part 1 of the show, I explore some of the ways I have evolved, and I talk about a great live event I recently attended that was hosted by two young coaches in my area – Dan Allison and Mike Coval. Just being there and being a part of this informal mastermind got me thinking of new ideas and generated a lot of items on my even-lengthening To-Do list.
Part 2 of the show features our friend Red Wakeham from Michigan State University talking about he has evolved as a coach, and what that process has meant to him.

Ep. 35 - THE IMPACT SHOW: Brett Bartholomew on Conscious Coaching

Ep. 35 - THE IMPACT SHOW: Brett Bartholomew on Conscious Coaching
Brett Bartholomew is one of the top young strength coaches in the industry. He has worked as a college S & C Coach at University of Nebraska, spent several years at API/EXOS and he has recently written a book titled Conscious Coaching, that is destined to be a best-seller in the world of strength & conditioning, sports performance, fitness and sports coaching.
I had a chance to spend some time with Brett at the PLAE USE conference in Indianapolis, and as we got talking, we decided that we just NEEDED to record a podcast.
My voice still sounds pretty bad from being sick and losing it last week, but Brett sounds great. Haha. He even does an incredible “movie trailer voice” impersonation that you’re going to love.
If you’re not familiar with Brett Bartholomew, this podcast pretty much sums him up. Smart. Witty. Well-spoken. Down to earth. And a great coach.
If you ARE familiar with Brett, you’re going to love this conversation, and you’re going to love his new book.

Ep. 34 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Brett Klika on Youth Development

Ep. 34 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Brett Klika on Youth Development
Brett Klika is a leading authority on youth development and how coaches can assist in this maturation process. He worked for world-renowned trainer Todd Durkin for several years, heading up his youth development program. Eventually, Brett co-created a program called SPIDERfit Kids that teaches coaches, trainers and educators the intricacies of helping young people become more physically literate.
Brett breaks this process down into 9 distinct segments:
Body Awareness: Understanding the parts of the body and various ways they can move.
Directional Awareness: The ability to understand the directions of the body (right, left, up, down, etc.) and to be able to move in all planes of motion.
Spatial Awareness: A concept of how much space the body occupies in relation to the surrounding environment.
Temporal Awareness: The sense of timing, rhythm, and precision.
Vestibular Awareness: An internal sense of the head and body’s position in relation to gravity.
Proprioceptive Awareness: The ability to interpret the internal sense of where the body and specific joints are in space and in relation to each other, and how much force/velocity they are exerting.
Tactile Awareness: The ability to appropriately respond to touch, in addition to differentiation of objects by size, texture, and shape.
Visual Awareness: The ability to visually focus, track, and take in broad fields of view.
Auditory Awareness: The ability to accurately interpret and respond to sound.
If you work with children, have children or think you might be interested in working with young people at some point, I think you’re going to love listening to Brett Klika on this episode of The Impact Show.
You may also want to check out the awesome program SPIDERfit Kids that Brett Klika created for coaches and trainers. This incredibly-thorough program walks you step-by-step, how to create and organize developmentally-appropriate programs for young kids.

Ep. 33 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Getting More Done & Business Mistakes

Ep. 33 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Getting More Done & Business Mistakes
People interested in making an impact are busy. It’s important that we get a lot done in a limited amount of time. I’m often asked how I’m able to maintain a high level of productivity, but I wish that I could accomplish even more each day. I truly believe that productive people always feel that way. Many of the most productive people I know constantly talk about how they wish they had more hours in the day. They are always interested in getting more done.
Because I’ll never get more hours in the day, I’ve figured out how to maximize my time by using some very simple, yet effective, strategies. In the first half of this episode, I talk about some of the strategies I’ve learned to apply in my career.
The second half of Ep. 33 includes a familiar guest – Ryan Ketchum – to offer up his thoughts on what he considers the most common business mistakes. Ryan is a very efficient businessman, and he always presents ideas in a way that allows you to apply the knowledge.
If you’re interested in getting more done and avoiding common business mistakes, this is the episode you’ve been waiting for.

Ep. 31 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Brian Sipotz
Brian Sipotz is the Owner of Advantage Strength & Conditioning in Ann Arbor, MI and a co-owner of www.HockeyStrengthAndConditioning.com. When his professional hockey career ended, Brian wasn’t sure what was next. By taking risks, meeting the right people and recognizing opportunities, he has created a growing business for himself and his young family.
Like many young professionals, Brian Sipotz was faced with many decisions as he set up his new business. Unlike many others, however, he didn’t know how difficult it was going to be, so he moved forward without worrying about many of the things that would have stopped other coaches from pursuing their dreams.
Brian has a great story about getting started that can benefit anyone looking to make a change in their life. You’ll appreciate his humility, transparency and thought process going into establishing his business.
Listen to Brian’s interview on the Impact Show on the player below or listen on your phone by downloading the show from iTunes on your Podcast app or through any other podcast app you choose. Subscribe to the Impact Show to make sure you never miss an episode.

Ep. 30 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Darl Bauer on Leadership vs Ownership

Ep. 30 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Darl Bauer on Leadership vs Ownership
Regular listeners of the Impact Show know Darl Bauer, the Associate Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for Football at West Virginia University. Well, Darl is back for the final show of 2017, and it’s a great topic for anyone working in a team atmosphere. In this episode, Darl talks about the difference between leadership and ownership and how he develops both qualities in his team.
We also talk briefly about whether or not leadership can be taught or if it is a trait people are born with. Darl’s insights into this, and how he goes about developing a cohesive atmosphere is brilliant.
Thank you for making 30 episodes of the Impact Show possible and being a loyal listener. We would love to have you subscribe to the show as well as give it a rating and a brief review. Those things help iTunes know that the show is being listened to and supported by YOU, so it would be very helpful to have you take a second to do that.

Ep. 29 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Jim's Year-End Inventory

Ep. 29 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Jim's Year-End Inventory
The end of the year is always crazy, but we somehow find a way to break through it all and create New Years Resolutions at the beginning of the year. These resolutions are basically goals – the goals we have for the new year. But, until we take a look back at the year, we might be short-changing ourselves or leaving something out.
I’ve engaged in a process of taking a year-end inventory to see all of successes, failures, challenges, opportunities, missed opportunities and areas for growth. Taking a look backward is a great way to decide how you’d like to move forward, so this episode is all about taking a brief look backward before you start thinking about new goals.
It’s a very simple process, and there’s no right or wrong way to go about it. Take a quick listen to one of the shortest episodes yet, and start your homework assignment right away so you’re ready for the big goal-setting time of the year.

THE IMPACT SHOW - EP 028 - Jim Kielbaso IYCA Transition

THE IMPACT SHOW - EP 028 - Jim Kielbaso IYCA Transition
In this episode, I’m excited to announce my new leadership role with the IYCA, the International Youth Conditioning Association. When I got involved in the IYCA several years ago, I realized that it was a very different organization that not only addressed high-quality training methods, they also addressed how to be a better coach, run your business and make an impact on young athletes.
When the opportunity presented itself to become the President & CEO, I felt like the last 20 years of my career all came together. All of my experiences coaching, running a business, writing, and producing online content pulled together. I’m still running Total Performance, so I’ll be in the trenches every day, which makes this opportunity even more exciting. I get to do what I love with people that I truly enjoy being around.
I look forward to the next chapter of the IYCA and hearing your thoughts about the direction you’d like to see it take. Please try out my new e-mail address jim@IYCA.org and let me know your thoughts on the IYCA.

Ep. 27 - THE IMAPCT SHOW: Gary Schofield

Ep. 27 - THE IMAPCT SHOW: Gary Schofield
Gary Schofield is not only a high school strength coach, he is an entrepreneur, father, husband and the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Greater Atlanta Christian School where he has been making a difference for nearly 20 years. In this episode, he talks about his crazy daily schedule, and some of the situations he has encountered during his career as a high school strength coach.
We also spent some time talking about his new endeavor, forming the National High School Strength Coaches Association. The NHSSCA was created exclusively for the high school strength coach who encounters very different demands compared to other coaches/trainers.
The high school strength coach is responsible for educating and training hundreds of young student-athletes with an incredibly wide range of athletic ability, work ethic, motivation and interest in the training process. This requires the ability to constantly change or adapt your programming for different circumstances, so these coaches must learn how to get creative and change on the fly.
Gary has set up a Facebook page dedicated to his new organization, where you’re encouraged to go for more information on the NHSSCA.
To learn more about the differences between strength & conditioning positions, please check out this article on How to Become a Strength & Conditioning Coach, and get 30% off the IYCA’s High School Strength & Conditioning Coach Certification by using Promo Code JK30 when you check out.

Ep. 26 - Politics vs Strength & Conditioning

Ep. 26 - Politics vs Strength & Conditioning
Election Day is here! Finally!!! This election cycle has been absolutely crazy, but it got me thinking about parallels between how we make political decisions and how we make decisions about strength & conditioning and business.
First things first, this episode is NOT about politics. It’s all about exploring the ways in which we make our decisions, and I’ve seen so many things seep out into other areas of our lives, that I felt compelled to talk about it. So, while the election has driven people crazy, there is a lot we can learn about ourselves as professionals from the way we make political decisions. Sometimes it’s good. Sometimes it’s bad. But, it’s interesting to see how one area of our lives affects another.
Again, I promise this isn’t about politics, and I hope you enjoy this episode. Leave a comment below explaining the parallels you’ve seen.

Ep 25 THE IMPACT SHOW - Mark Watts

Ep 25 THE IMPACT SHOW - Mark Watts
Mark Watts is one of those rare guys who has been a college coach, worked in a business setting, and eventually realized what he was born to do – teach and coach youth sports. Mark spent years paying his dues, surviving on low wages and learning from great coaches before he finally got his chance to be a college strength coach at Denison University in Ohio.
After many years chasing the “strength coach dream,” Mark accepted what many would consider a dream job as the Director of Education at EliteFTS.com. During his time at EliteFTS, Mark authored dozens of articles, spoke at conference around the country and hosted the EliteFTS Sports Performance Podcast (which was absolutely fantastic).
With a stacked resume, you might expect Mark Watts to be arrogant and opinionated, but he is a genuine, open-minded, first-class person who is making a huge impact on a lot of kids these days.

Ep 24 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Darl Bauer: How much strength is enough?

Ep 24 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Darl Bauer: How much strength is enough?
How much strength is enough? This question has probably been discussed by every strength coach in the world, yet there still isn’t a definitive answer. West Virginia University Associate Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for Football, Darl Bauer, and I have talked about this dozens of times, so we thought it would be great to discuss it on The Impact Show.
Even more importantly, we’d really like to continue this discussion with you and hear your thoughts on how much strength is enough. Leave a comment below, or hit us up on social media. The Impact Show has it’s own Facebook page, so type that into the search bar and join the conversation.
You can also find Jim Kielbaso on Facebook and share your thoughts. There’s really no right or wrong answer, but it’s always interesting to hear different coaches’ perspectives on the topic. Darl and Jim certainly don’t agree 100% on this topic, but they’ve both slightly changed their minds through the years.
Before your totally surprised, the show opens with a short discussion on having “good bad days.” If you are familiar with this concept, definitely take a minutes to hear more about it, and try to apply it to your life. Even better, teach your clients how to have good bad days.
Again, let us know your thoughts on how much strength is enough and visit our sponsor at IYCA.org. Use promo code JK30 to get 30% off all of their certifications.

Ep. 23 - Lon Record - Hammer Strength/Life Fitness

Ep. 23 - Lon Record - Hammer Strength/Life Fitness
Lon Record has been a college strength & conditioning coach at the highest levels (Notre Dame, Villanova, etc.) and is now the National Athletics Manager for Hammer Strength/Life Fitness. He has been able to utilize his knowledge and experience as a strength coach in more of a sales/consultant role to help schools create outstanding facilities. These facilities end up making an impact on hundreds, or even thousands, of people, which turns into Lon’s “ripple effect.” Lon is also responsible for organizing the Hammer Strength strength & conditioning clinics all over the country. These clinics bring together incredible coaches from a wide range of schools, and attendees gain information they can take back to their schools. This creates another ripple effect for Lon that has allowed him to make a huge impact on the entire industry.
Lon helped me and Novi High School (MI) put together an incredible new strength & conditioning facility that now serves hundreds of students and faculty members every day.

Ep. 22 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Licensure

Ep. 22 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Licensure
High-quality strength & conditioning coaches and personal trainers have always tried to separate themselves from low-quality professionals. For years, there have been discussions about creating a government-regulated license that would keep poorly qualified or uneducated people out of the profession. There has never been a great way to make this happen, but it has become pretty obvious that some sort of distinction should be made.
In this episode, I discuss this topic with Michigan State University strength coaches Red Wakeham and Molli Munz. We would love to hear your thoughts on this topic, so please leave a comment below or hit me up on social media to share your ideas.

Ep. 21 - WIL FLEMING: OLYMPIC LIFTING

Ep. 21 - WIL FLEMING: OLYMPIC LIFTING
When it comes to Olympic Lifting, Wil Fleming has pretty much done it all. He has competed at the National level, coached at the Olympic training center and has produced multiple products that teach performance coaches how to use the lifts. He has even created a course called The Certified Weightlifting Performance Coach that will only be available from Sept. 26th – Oct. 8th.
So, if Wil Fleming is going to be on the Impact Show, it only made sense to talk about….well….Olympic lifting. We talked about weightlifting for performance coaches, some technique-based topics and even his thoughts on how to navigate the massive amount of information available on the internet.
In true Impact Show form, we also got to talk about a coach that made a HUGE impact on Wil, and how things have come full circle as he is having a nearly identical impact on the athletes he trains.
If you are a performance coach, sport coach, athlete or trainer who wants to maximize the effectiveness of your Olympic lifting instruction, make sure to take advantage of Wil’s Certified Weightlifting Performance Coach program. We also mentioned the High School Strength & Conditioning Coach Certification that Wil co-authored, and you can get 30% off that course by using the promo code JK30.
Of course, make sure you also check out http://wilfleming.com for more great info from Wil.
