ATTOMBRI Brothers and the art of Venetian Glass Jewelry
This week on The Italian Radio Hour - Venice, the city of water. For centuries Venice has been made famous by the material that most profoundly represents its enchanting history and fluid terrain, glass. As early as the nineteen eighties, Stephano and Daniele Attombri caught much attention and acclaim with their unique design that seems to move amid the fertile terrain of both fashion and fine art. The Attombri brothers work within a particular contemporary key. A skillful balance has been struck between the materials of old and new and the blend of both traditional Venetian technique and innovation. Venetian antiquity merges with ethnic patterning, mythology and avant-garde style. The surprising selection of materials such as copper, silver and Murano glass beads of old intertwine to render a look that is timeless.

Via a variety of disciplines, Luci makes artifacts utilizing traditional women’s modes of making: sewing, embroidery, and crochet, reinventing these notions through her practice, reclaiming these practices through memory and intention. The work is a manifestation of the hopes, dreams, and desires of migrant women, and also, their lived realities. It strives to honor their voices which were often silenced by the dominant gender roles within the Italian Calabrian diaspora.

TINA, MAFIA SOLDIER
This week on The Italian Radio Hour: TINA, MAFIA SOLDIER. In conversation with Sicilian writer Maria Rosa Cutrufelli and Robin Pickering-Iazzi, Professor of Italian and Comparative Literature, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and translator of the book. Sicily, 1980s: When she was just eight years old, Tina watched as her father, a member of Cosa Nostra, was murdered in cold blood. Now a teenager, she terrorizes her hometown of Gela, having made it her mission to join the mafia, an organization traditionally forbidden to women as made members. Nicknamed ’a masculidda, or “the tomboy,” Tina has taken charge of her own clan, and is notorious for her cruelty and reckless disregard for societal expectations. When a news article is published about Tina’s latest crimes, a teacher living in Rome feels compelled to write a novel about her—even though it means returning to her native Sicily to gather material. She and Tina circle around each other in a dangerous dance of obsession and violence until their first, and last, explosive meeting. This groundbreaking exploration of gender identity and clear-eyed presentation of an unseen side of the mafia is a landmark literary achievement by one of Italy’s feminist icons. SFOGLINI Pasta - How does US made pasta live up to their Italian counterparts?
How does USA made pasta hold up to their Italian counterparts? Meet Sfoglini pasta! Sfoglini combines the very best of Italian technique and American ingredients: traditional bronze dies and plates, beautiful pasta shapes, great porosity! Pasta is also slow-dry to preserve both flavor and nutrients. Sfoglini sources fifteen organic durum semolina pastas from the best in North American organic grains and local and small farms to produce various seasonal pastas throughout each year. While interviewing Sfoglini’s Co-Founder Scott Ketchum, we cooked their cascatelli in a cream, pancetta, and coffee grinds (yes, you heard me!) for a real time test and the result was simply delicious. The pasta held not only its beautiful "waterfall" shape but the sauce and a nice al dente bite! Try to believe!

Remembering the Triangle Factory Fire with Mary Anne Trasciatti
This week on The Italian Radio Hour: REMEMBERING THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE. As the City of New York is preparing to commemorate the 112th anniversary of the Triangle Factory Fire where 146 mainly young immigrant women lost their lives, trapped in the building, we caught up with Mary Anne Trasciatti, President of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition, and a Professor of Rhetoric and Director of the Labor Studies program at Hofstra University in Long Island. Mary Anne talks about the impact this tragedy had on current safety and labor laws, what the commemoration will look like THIS FRIDAY, the construction of the Memorial that will unveiled later in the year and the impact this event had on the collective through the essays contained in "TALKING TO THE GIRLS". To learn more: https://rememberthetrianglefire.org/commemoration/ ABOUT THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE: The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was the site of one of the worst workplace tragedies in American history. On March 25, 1911, fire broke out at the factory, which occupied the top three floors of the ten-story Asch Building, in Greenwich Village, New York City. At the time, there were over 500 employees—most were young women; most were recent immigrants. The fire began on the 8th floor; most workers on the eighth and tenth floors were able to escape. However, those on the 9th floor, where the rear door was locked to prevent theft, were trapped. The locked exit, the collapse of the fire escape, and the inability of the fire truck ladders to reach above the sixth floor, resulted in the death of 146 workers, mostly young women. Many of the victims jumped to their death, rather than remain in the burning building. ABOUT Mary Anne Trasciatti She is co-editor Talking to the Girls: Intimate and Political Essays on the Triangle Fire (New Village Press, 2022), with Edi Giunta. She is also a co-editor of Where Are the Workers?: Labor’s Stories at Museums and Historic Sites (University of Illinois Press, 2022). Trasciatti is the daughter and granddaughter of garment workers, and has devoted more than a decade to advocating for the creation of a Triangle Fire Memorial. In her work, she is inspired by the discipline of rhetoric as a tool for knowledge creation, community building, and social advocacy. ABOUT Talking to the Girls: Intimate & Political Essays on the Triangle Fire A powerful collection of diverse voices, Talking to the Girls: Intimate and Political Essays on the Triangle Fire brings together stories from writers, artists, activists, scholars, and family members of the Triangle workers. Nineteen contributors from across the globe speak of a singular event with remarkable impact. One hundred and eleven years after the tragic incident, Talking to the Girls articulates a story of contemporary global relevance and stands as an act of collective testimony: a written memorial to the Triangle victims. LEAVING THE FACTORY with Director Alessia Cruci and Actor Roberta Sparta
This week on The Italian Radio Hour - BONUS INTERVIEW on The Italian Radio Hour: We continue our conversation on Remember the Triangle Fire with Alessia Crucitelli, the Director of the short "Leaving the Factory" , winner at Russo Brothers Italian American Film Forum and film leading actress Roberta Sparta. With "Leaving the Factory," the filmmakers have created a story that humanizes the historical tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911, which caused the death of more than 120 women and girls who were trapped inside the facilities. A major focus of Alessia's film is to change how Americans view the early history of feminism and worker rights by examining the important contributions that Italian textile worker women made on behalf of the movement".

Bruno Sammartino The Authorized Biography of Wrestling's Greatest Champion!
This week on The Italian Radio Hour: In conversation with Larry Richert (Producer of the documentary) and Bruno's son Darryl Sammartino.
Not only Bruno's achievements as an athlete with unprecedented sold out matches at Madison Square Garden as a headliner but also how his story on how he and his family escape from the tragedies of WWII, have made Bruno Sammartino a great inspirational figure for people all over the world.
Bruno was the son of Italian immigrant parents, who looked out at that world of privileged fame with the eyes of a boy whose family fled the Nazi invasion of their home in Italy, feared for their lives at the hands of Hitler’s SS Troop’s, were nearly machine gunned to death execution style and suffered malnutrition and near-fatal illness only to arrive in a country where his inability to speak the language and his poor physical health as a 13 year old 75 pound that made him a focus of ethnic ridicule and an easy target of schoolyard bullies.
Throughout his life, Bruno faced his own moments of challenge both in and out of the wrestling ring. This documentary provides an in-depth look at the man who holds honor above fame and dignity above fortune. It provides Bruno the opportunity to share the truth behind the speculation and allows others intimately involved with his life to share their experiences about the man behind the titles. Historic images and films plus recreations supplement the interviews and provide a chronological thread for detailing Bruno’s improbable rise to become the strongest man in the world.
Additionally, Arnold Schwarzenegger flew from a movie set in California to Madison Square Garden just to induct Bruno into the WWE Hall-Of-Fame in 2013.

Basilicata Secrets with Anita Aloisio
This week on The Italian Radio Hour - In conversation with Anila Aloisio For those belonging to a generation born from the immigrant experience, often the link to their heritage lies in the interaction and culinary rituals centered in the kitchen. The sacred ingredients and codes for food preparation make the process of cooking all the more meaningful. It isn’t surprising that family secrets and cultural attachments are interlaced and inadvertently divulged during the preparation of the meal. Food becomes the pretext for intuitive exchange and conversation.
Driven to honor such culinary attachments, Basilicata Secrets brings its audience on a cinematic and literary adventure. It highlights the richness of undisclosed culinary and oral traditions and recipes and illustrates them on video and in an unconventional recipe book. A total of 14 episodes produced for TV and Web platforms map out the 10 villages visited by the director Anita Aloisio who then shares her experience in uncovering the uniqueness of 14 recipe secrets. The Book, describes the personal journey of the director as she reconnects with the traditions and practices in food making and relationship building.
Emotionally strong, poignant and entertaining, the Basilicata Secrets project provides an opportunity to understand culture, identity and tradition and will satisfy the curiosity of the modern culinary traveler, the sedentary foodie and of course all Italophiles. "Tutti in Scena" with Laura Caparrotti, Founder of KITheater
This week on The Italian Radio Hour in Conversation with Laura Caparrotti, Director and Writer of "Tutti in Scena", the first documentary about the history of the beginning of the Italian Theater in NYC told by today's Italian Theater Company in NY, Kairos Italy Theater.
Thru the work of Malzone, Maiori, Farfariello, Cordiferro, Antonietta Pisanielli, Ria Rosa and many others, Laura documents the development of the first amateur and professional theaters in NYC as well as the role that theater had in the immigrant community, family life and social conscience of those times.
About Laura Caparrotti:
Laura is the Founding Artistic Director of the main Italian Theater Company in NY Kairos Italy Theater and of In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian Theater Festival to take place in all 5 NY Boroughs. In 2019 Laura inaugurated On Stage! the first American Theater Festival in Rome as a associate director. Among Laura's many characters, one of our favorite is Miss Margherita, a despotic teacher-diva, who has a unique method for teaching Italian through the ABCs of what everyone knows about Italy: “A” equals “amore,” “B” equals “buono,” “C” equals “citta,” and so on. After Miss Margherita finishes reciting Dante’s poetry and scenes from Italian plays, singing old and new Italian songs, comparing regional differences, and demonstrating her impeccably correct pronunciation, everyone will know absolutely everything they ever need to know about the Italian language,” the library states.

Hollywood's Italian American Filmmakers: Capra, Scorsese, Savoca, Coppola, and Tarantino with Jonathan Cavallero
Today’s conversation topic is Hollywood’s Italian American Filmmakers: Capra, Scorsese, Savoca, Coppola, and Tarantino, a wonderful publication written by Jonathan Cavallero. Jonathan is an Associate Professor and Chair of Rhetoric, Film, and Screen Studies at Bates College and the Founding Director of the Bates Film Festival. In his book, Jonathan explores the different ways in which Italian American directors from the 1920s to the present have responded to their ethnicity. While some directors have used film to declare their ethnic roots and create an Italian American "imagined community," others have ignored or even denied their background.

TALKING TO THE GIRLS and the TRIANGLE SHIRT FACTORY FIRE with Prof. Edvige Giunta
This week on The Italian Radio Hour - Prof Edvige Giunta On March 25, 1911, a fire broke out on the eighth floor of the Asch Building in Greenwich Village, New York. The top three floors housed the Triangle Waist Company, a factory where approximately 500 workers, mostly young immigrant women and girls, labored to produce fashionable cotton blouses, known as “waists.” The fire killed 146 workers in a mere 15 minutes but pierced the perpetual conscience of citizens everywhere. The Asch Building had been considered a modern fireproof structure, but inadequate fire safety regulations left the workers inside unprotected. The tragedy of the fire, and the resulting movements for change, were pivotal in shaping workers' rights and unions. A powerful collection of diverse voices, Talking to the Girls: Intimate and Political Essays on the Triangle Fire brings together stories from writers, artists, activists, scholars, and family members of the Triangle workers. Nineteen contributors from across the globe speak of a singular event with remarkable impact. One hundred and eleven years after the tragic incident, Talking to the Girls articulates a story of contemporary global relevance and stands as an act of collective testimony: a written memorial to the Triangle victims.

The Italian Legacy in Philadelphia with Dr. Andrea Canepari
This week on The Italian Radio Hour: The Italian Legacy in Philadelphia: History, Culture, People, and Ideas.
In conversation with Dr. Andrea Canepari, Directorate General for Country Promotion of the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Rome. Dr. Canepari was also the Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia from 2013 to 2017
Italian arts and culture have been a significant influence on Philadelphia dating back to Thomas Jefferson and colonial times. Throughout the ensuing decades, Italian art and architecture styles flourished, and wealthy Philadelphians traveled to Italy and brought back objects to display in emerging institutions of art and culture. New immigration formed neighborhoods—such as South Philly, home to the Italian Market—and Italian business leaders, politicians, artists, musicians and sports figures came to prominence and became part of the social fabric of the city.
This glorious volume, The Italian Legacy in Philadelphia, celebrates the history, impact, and legacy of this vibrant community, tracing four periods of key transformation in the city’s political, economic, and social structures. The editors and contributors chronicle the changing dynamics of the city as Italian immigrants established themselves and as they continue to have lively interactions with people and institutions in Italy.

The Antique Fabrics Collection of Fondazione Antonio Ratti with Maddalena Terragni & Salvatore Giardina
In 1985, Antonio Ratti created in Como the non-profit foundation that bears his name, with the desire to share his passion for art and textiles and to preserve his textile collection. Over the past 30 years, Fondazione Antonio Ratti (FAR) has been supporting and promoting research and experimentation in culture and the arts, including scholars, established and emerging artists in a lively and open environment. The Foundation, headed by Annie Ratti since 2002, is located in Villa Sucota, an historic building on Lake Como. Here we find Antonio Ratti’s extraordinary collection of antique textiles preserved – with more than 30.000 pieces from across the globe – and a library open to the public with more than 7800 volumes specialized in textiles, fashion, visual arts and crafts. Every year the program Artists' Research Laboratory (CSAV) is held in this location. It was conceived by Annie Ratti in 1995, with the intention of allowing young international artists to deepen their practices and research through experimentation and dialogue with major figures on the contemporary art scene. FAR organizes also a wide range of activities, courses, lectures and seminars dedicated to different subjects, from history of textile to theory of art, from cineforum to permaculture. In addition, FAR proposes exhibitions in which antique textiles from the collection dialogue with contemporary works of art, activating unexpected connections between the two souls of the Foundation. The spaces of the villa and the surrounding garden – that host site-specific artworks made by a selection of artists who have collaborated with the Foundation – become thus places of encounter and debate platforms where visitors, scholars, entrepreneurs and experts from different fields have the chance to meet and gather in order to expand and deepen their research and influence each other in the process. Fondazione Antonio Ratti is therefore internationally renowned and is part of a larger network of institutions which exchange and develop ideas together. The location of Villa Sucota – where FAR moved in 2010 becoming part of the Kilometer of Knowledge project – places the Foundation in a wider cultural context in terms of its architecture and location, thus acting as a cultural reference point for the city of Como.
